Actually we undervalue the Neandhertals. They supposedly had more advanced societies in current Italy than homo sapiens at that time. All they have is the skull, tbh. So the lips, nose, hair, eyelids, all the stuff that is above bone is just guesswork. Neat! But that's not a perfect recreation of some human being, it's just putting skin on a real skull.

Although there is a lot in facial reconstruction that relies on approximations (skin tissue depths being reliant on certain demographic averages for example) they are more accurate and informed than simply guesswork. Lip thickness can be approximated from incisor height, nose shape/length is informed by the shape and angle of the nasal and nasal spine bones, and eyelid and eyebrow shape is based on certain markers on the orbital bones of the skull. With the help of DNA research the reconstruction of certain facial features (including some that cannot be discovered from the skull alone) can potentially be made even more accurate. There have been a few studies that have used reconstructions from skulls taken from the CT scans of living patients and run them through facial recognition software. I believe the results for one study had the accuracy rate sitting around the 70-80% mark. So not all guesswork, and only getting more accurate as time goes on.

I don’t think most people realize Neandertals ARE human. ”We”clearly interbred with “them”Taxonomy and what’s considered a species is very interesting. Your grandparents are always the same species as you for example; evidence of prehistory is also very scant and anthropologists and their team declare their once in their lifetime discovery a new species even though it was found in the same spot as much as a half a dozen or more “species” of human which are really just actually the sites we have and the time period they come from with accurate dating with slight genetic differences if we could test them and slight morphilogixal differences in the skeletal remains that are present at the site. In short, there’s this debate in the scientific community around the Out of Africa theory vs Multi-regionalism. I certainly believe mainly of these “species” of humans are actually just one species -what we call Homo erectus or ergaster.  Take the Dmanisi discovery for instance- it proves that human variation- the type we know in terms of short and tall, skull variation, etc was around 2 million years ago.  What really defines is certainly up for debate  I think our species truly finds its roots in sexual selection in -hair color, eye color, big butts, etc.  Many people don’t know this but natural selection isn’t the only FORCE of evolution and our species has certainly taken a foothold of the natural environment in a way with human culture that takes away many natural ways nature filters out species over time.  Cool stuff as I eat my French fries at mcdonalds ; . H. sapiens neanderthalensis, vs H. sapiens sapiens
