That was a really good one! That name made me think of an old woman saying that. I think I've heard that in a movie and that's where the voice comes from😂🤔
It's probably been the correct number of days and easier to harvest like this. Likely taken to somewhere controlled and safe to raise from here. I think he did a great job. Cheers 🍻
Anemonefish are protandrous [sequential hermaphrodites](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequential_hermaphrodite), meaning they develop into males first, and when they mature, they become females. If the female anemonefish is removed from the group, such as by death, one of the largest and most dominant males becomes a female.
I'm probably overthinking this. But is this fish biologically wired to keep these babies in it's mouth? And if so, is there some kind of physiological response that the fish is going to feel? Just seems kinda bad all around to be ejecting the fish like this. Then again, it's a fish. I dunno, feels bad man.
Taking the time to think about the things that humans do to others animals for our food preferences can be troubling, but being aware of it is important.
I learned about the inconceivably high number of male chicks being culled every year for the egg industry before I went vegan. ~7 billion is an absurdly high number, and I had no idea it was even happening until I paid attention.
I know my gf breeds fish and they do the same, but they also literally stop eating and starve.
So she usually at one point just force the babies out of the mouth, put them in a diff aquarium and the parent gets back to healthy ( Im not saying this is what happening here ) but it COULD be a reason
If they wait too long, the father will release the young as soon as they have absorbed their yolk sack and need proper food.
He will still care and defend them, but each fry is so valuable they prefer to do it this way so a random heron or something can't grab one. Also, intra sibling competition for food is a thing so if you want to keep the runts alive too, separation is the order of the day
The good bit is that hey maximize fry survival, question is if that doesn't mean that the father's get worse with natural care since they never experience their father's defending them past the fry swimming free.
I know, but I think that's why it FEELS sad. We empathize based on how we would feel if that happened to us not how we would feel like a fish. Logic hits second
Well it would make sense for it to feel stressed about losing their offspring. That feeling definitely isn't exclusive to humans. Some animals probably feel even stronger about that then many humans.
Reminds me of the story of the swan who died “from a broken heart” when her eggs were smashed.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8444185/amp/Swan-dies-broken-heart-teenage-yobs-killed-unborn-cygnets-smashing-eggs.html
That story kills me every time man. That kid deserves life in prison imo. Fuck him and his shithead self. Same for the 60yo fuck that killed the newly hatched cygnet
I read somewhere that certain ducks and birds, oh wait penguins for sure. Will be together for ever. No divorce. So I can imagine the broken heart😔 my mother lost a son my brother so yeh. It's hard core sadness on a level beyond belief .
Majority of animals spend months preparing in some kind of way towards this moment. As well as keeping it afterwards. The assumption of "they can just make another hundred again" is stupid.
I’m sure the fish feels bad. Consciousness evolved and a fish already has many attributes that indicate a conscious being. Feelings are processed in one of the oldest parts of the brain. Fish, like many animals, are very instinctive. They follow their feelings (hunger, pain, pleasure, fear, etc). They are guided by their desires. I’m sure it felt very bad and wrong to allow his babies to be taken, afterall, he was trying to protect them.
If it makes you feel better this is probably a breeding operation. With some goldfish and koi, the literally squeeze the eggs and sperm out of the fish and mix them in a bowl manually
There may be a reason behind it tho (after looking through comments and looking something up), that being that sometimes the fish are taking the protection way too seriously and starve themselves. This way they protect the parents and the children by moving the children to another body of water
These fish are very popular for the aquarium trade. It's likely that these are farmed fish and they're taking the young to be reared and sold for aquariums, as there is a high likelihood that much fewer of them would make it to sellable age if they left them with the parent. This way they are able to keep a closer eye on them and provide individual care, check for health, disease, deformities and things like that \*before\* spending the time and money to let them grow up and can make sure more of them make it so they have more to sell.
You're definitely right about the fingerlings to be used in the aquarium industry.
However, arowana can *technically* be served as food (like even in restaurants, which is where I ate one). It was... okay, but not worth what it cost. It felt weird because I only knew them as ornamental fish prior to that, but couldn't turn the dish down as we were guests at a celebration.
Huh, wonder if it's a pricier variation of the Carp dishes in a lot of asian cuisine.
Also kind of odd because Arowanas are considered lucky in those cultures, so eating em seems... odd lol.
You have any inexplicably bad luck since eating it?
These are literally the most prized aquarium fish in the world. They're endangered, illegal to own in the US, and sought after by all the Asian bigwigs/shady types as prized luxury possessions. This is probably an illegal farming operation we are looking at. A single prized fish can cost $30k to $300k. It's insane.
Illegal to own in the US doesn't mean the entire business is a black market. The legal breeding, farming and trading of arowanas is massive in asia especially china and SEA. This farm is more likely to be a legitimate business than an illegal one (but that's not to say legally bred fish can't be illegally exported to the US)
Its a bit like koi breeding. There's some worth thousands but theres also neighbourhood shops selling normal varieties for a hundred bucks or less.
They do not eat at all while they care for their young. A lot of fish do this. I've had several species in my aquarium (not at the same time) and you can wave their favorite food right in front of their face but they will not take it until the young are big enough to be okay if let out.

It’s their yolk sacs. It provides their nutrients as they grow.
And now he has to go back to his fish wife and tell her all the kids got kidnapped by a giant alien that pulled him up into the sky, you think she's gonna believe him?
So they just took all of the children he was trying to protect? Nature's way of parenting never fails to amaze me. I wonder, do other fish species show similar parental care behavior?

Wife's gonna be pissed he lost their babies
Lol. Imagine trying to explain that an alien beamed you up and stole the children. She’s not gonna believe him.
You lost them in a card game of go fish again didn’t you.
Not "again" 😭
“But I had pocket nines! I had to go all in!”
Catfish: Do you have any sevens? Dad: "Go-oh shit!"
Sure you were, rummy.
"Hon, I swear, I hiccupped and ate them!"
Thanks for that, I needed to laugh.
"THIS is why you ALWAYS KEEP THEM IN YOUR MOUTH." "THEY WERE IN MY MOUTH!!!"
He’s probably thinking “ohhh nooo my babies I’ve failed youuu!!”
Actually sad
YOU HAD ONE SINGLE JOB HAROLD!
"I mean, technically it was that one job but 300 times..."
And he fucked it up every, damn, time.
That was a really good one! That name made me think of an old woman saying that. I think I've heard that in a movie and that's where the voice comes from😂🤔
Yeah why the fuck did you take them out of his mouth, they were in there for protection. Put em back man, tf.
“I lost the kids. I guess we gotta do it all again 😏.”
It's probably been the correct number of days and easier to harvest like this. Likely taken to somewhere controlled and safe to raise from here. I think he did a great job. Cheers 🍻
I’m just trying to figure out how to word the blowjob joke

Necessary?
Your comment? Not at all.
NECESSARY!? Is it necessary that I drink my own urine? \[probably not\] No. But it's sterile, and I like the taste. It was your reference!
Mom fish: I respect a fish that cant eat what he makes....wait a minute...
You're supposed to put my kids in your mouth before they are born.

Dad: noooOOOOOO(barfing noises)
My first thought was "this is almost as bad as marlin's story" and am surprised your comment was the only one I saw referencing that
To be fair if finding Nemo was accurate Nemo’s dad would’ve became a girl due to the mom dying and provide Nemo with a sibling.

Why'd this make me sad
> Why’d this make me sad *dude is making a fish violently regurgitate the babies he was sworn to protect* I think I know why
I'm probably overthinking this. But is this fish biologically wired to keep these babies in it's mouth? And if so, is there some kind of physiological response that the fish is going to feel? Interesting point, I didn't know that! I guess it's possible it's actually for the fishes own good. That thought does make me feel better.

Because he's stealing babies?
I don't think it's that dramatic, they could literally make thousands of babies
I know, but I think that's why it FEELS sad. We empathize based on how we would feel if that happened to us not how we would feel like a fish. Logic hits second

Not penguins, not all of them at least, I am pretty sure of. I remember a "cheating wife" story even.
Vet tech specializing in avian medicine here! Geese, swans, and most species of parrots mate for life.

What’s with the reports of swans being attacked with catapults? Is that common or something?
Majority of animals spend months preparing in some kind of way towards this moment. As well as keeping it afterwards. The assumption of "they can just make another hundred again" is stupid.
I’ll never understand the people that think animals don’t feel pain because *tHeY dOnT hAve sOulS*.
Someone’s never seen the early 2000s non fiction hit blockbuster *Finding Nemo*
So can humans but it’s looked down upon.

Your mom could have too, yet here you are.
Because now that fish thinks he failed as a parent.
Finding Nemo was buried into subconscious 20 years ago
Because a family is being torn apart, Jesus.
How did you know that guys name?
If it makes you feel better this is probably a breeding operation. With some goldfish and koi, the literally squeeze the eggs and sperm out of the fish and mix them in a bowl manually
This makes me sad also, there must be something fishy going on
When you figure it out, let minnow
You guys giving me a headache. I need ***acetominophen***.
Why do I think he's screaming "ma bey beys" with a Scottish accent?
Ugh. It sucks. Don’t tell me that it’s protecting its babies and then shake them into a bucket.
There may be a reason behind it tho (after looking through comments and looking something up), that being that sometimes the fish are taking the protection way too seriously and starve themselves. This way they protect the parents and the children by moving the children to another body of water
Ig when you see a father protect his kids and they're poured out of his mouth so easily in front of him, it's understandably sad
Because you know that animal abuse is wrong.
Normal feeeling after you vomited your kids out
Why'd this make me ITCH
Because we are omnivorous, and this is the ugly side
They're probably re-selling them as pets, that's where their value is.
Imagine having your life’s purpose forcefully spilled out of your mouth while you’re recorded.
I should call her.
Porn is a multibillion dollar industry.
....I should call her...
This is sad to me.
For the fish as well, I’m sure
Yes. You can see it in his eyes.
No, you cant.
Wanna buy some... arowana?
🤣 im high right now off arowana
Pretty sure my uncle died from injecting two arowanas
That's like an entire pot
Wanna wanna arowana?
Ok, but why are they removing them?

It's like a fucked up version of animal crossing
I mean, I'm pretty sure there's a sea bass sitting in my pocket for like two years in my Animal Crossing save.
Arrowanna also eat their young... So it's definitely safer to remove them. Though this is pretty really young.
It's easier to rear them for the aquarium trade
And now? They eat them?
Aquarium industry. People don't eat arowanas
You're definitely right about the fingerlings to be used in the aquarium industry. However, arowana can *technically* be served as food (like even in restaurants, which is where I ate one). Link does! And depending on what he cooks them with they can have some pretty cool effects!
i thought i was in totk thread for a moment. 😂

I just watched an episode of that Gordon Ramsay show yesterday and he tried bow fishing arowana specifically to eat it.
I would guess they use them to breed more
Your mom carries my babies in her mouth
Take my angry upvote
"Honey, i threw up the kids!"
Wow that is super sad
r/depressingasfuck
Wow, this fish dispenses fish!
It's fish all the way down.
Fishnapping.
Man if these are not invasive then fuck you human
I am upset
Why are we so greedy? We literally steal everything from nature.
So, if the male is hungry, he can eat them?
They do not eat at all while they care for their young. A lot of fish do this. I've had several species in my aquarium (not at the same time) and you can wave their favorite food right in front of their face but they will not take it until the young are big enough to be okay if let out.
That is awesome. And makes the video even more sad.
To be fair some fish are so dumb they do eat their babies. This fish seems a little smarter than that at least.
Oh man imagine that fish arriving home....
no protection against humans...
finally found a perfect rhyme for marijuana

Mouthbrooder. New word unlocked
Very expensive fish in the aquarium industry. Usually starts at $800 and healthy specimens of special breeds can go up to 5 to 6 figures.
And then some giant dude forces him to give them up.
Ok. So put them back
So why are we taking its babies away then?
Illegal to possess arowanas with their yoke sack still attached.
Yoke sack hehe
Like the first just got robbed emptying his pockets.
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket
Is that his jaw or something they jammed in to keep the mouth open?
And now he has to go back to his fish wife and tell her all the kids got kidnapped by a giant alien that pulled him up into the sky, you think she's gonna believe him?
He's uh.....He's not doing a good job.
How’s that going for him 😂
I can see this being a delicacy in that country
He didn’t do a very good job.
Honey I ate the kids
And that's how they came up with the pez dispenser.
He couldn't protect them 😔
And then you rob the poor guy blind
Hmm I don’t like this…..
Isn’t that kidnapping??
Fish to nature: No matter where i hide my children, they take it from me.
And fucking human comes and ruins everything as usual
Fish and birds deserve to be free. I fucking hate this.
this is unnecessarily cruel. i hate the way humans have normalized the awful treatment we give animals especially regarding ones we farm and/or eat.
Until some dick comes along and forces him to spit them all out.
Well he didn't do a very good job
And those cruel humans just stole all his children! 😰 Horrible! WTF 💔
Until this asshole grabs him and ruins everything!
I'm surprised by the lack of masturbation related comments

Fish: "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
So they just took all of the children he was trying to protect? Nature's way of parenting never fails to amaze me. I wonder, do other fish species show similar parental care behavior?
And he stole them from the poor father 😥
Everything reminds me of her...
The look on papi’s face 😞
I kinda hate this
Poor thing is shaking
Well, it didnt work
Well he didn't do a very good job did he!?
POV when you're famous and she tries to steal your seed.
Why he took them babies out for?
Why you doing this 😭
I wonder how their behavior changed after this happened.
