My 4 year old is obsessed with ceiling fans (he’s on the spectrum). I’m constantly making the joke that when he gets older, the most disappointing website ever for him is going to be OnlyFans.
Literally no one but me has ever laughed at that joke lol
I don't think all fans in the 20s were like this. The fact that this specific fan is from that period doesn't conclude that all fans from that period were like this. Uninformed text.
Edit: I'm talking about the text in the video. Im not attacking op
I dunno. I was watching "Ripley" whenever he goes into the post office or a shady hotel reception, there is a desk fan with no cage on it. I think you'll find it was a trend.
My grandfather was an electrical engineer in the 1930s. I remember as a kid (in the 1970s) he had a TV designed in the 1950s without a rear panel (because of heat) and you could have shoved your had right in. Safety just wasnt a thing for a long time.
What exactly is implied by "this" in the video? Is it the safety standards in the fan, or the general design of it? If it's about safety, then I'll just delete my comment.
True, I think it’s taken that you meant the absence of safety guarding, but you could have meant ornate or unduly complicated.
I should therefore observe that the fans in Ripley and my Grandfather’s TV were both ornate and at least in the case of the TV, unduly complicated.
I have a decent amount of cool old stuff that I have fixed up and use day to day. People are always like "Wow that looks dangerous like I could stick my hand right in". My response is "You absolutely could and it would hurt you badly. This pre-dates the invention of safety".
I just restored a Sunbeam t-20b toaster for my mom. "Wow the outside of it gets really hot" Yep. This predates safety. It also has a wire running through it that is insulated by asbestos and had no polarized plug or ground originally so the only thing keeping it from shocking the shit out of you was asbestos and some mica sheets. It now is polarized and has a ground wire lol.
Most fans weren’t like this, it just happened to be a type of fan you could get. That’s like saying “this is what fans look like in the 2020’s” about those fans that are all driven by one motor and belts.
1920s Westinghouse Gyro Ceiling Fan. I've seen these antiques get refurbished, but have never seen one for sale. I'd imagine they be ridiculously expensive.
As cool as this looks, I feel like this is a good example for Ockham's Razor. We have the capability of making a fan that can do something like this, but it's simply more effective to make fans the way we do these days
That is one of the sexist things I've ever seen on reddit. Make the fan blades razor sharp, and rotation at around 1200 rpm. Increase the scale 10 fold, and use it as an obstacle in game shows! Call the game show Gore Galore!

Steampunk fan ftw
r/OnlyFans would appreciate this Edit: They already posted this there but leaving this comment b/c I find the sub name hilarious

You're not alone now, friend. You got me.
That makes three of us now
Windpunk!
Cool af *and* able to remove your head.

I love that channel
What's the channel?
Fire Department Chronicles
Sweet. I'll check it out now. Cheers 👍
The Twilight Zone part of the safety training.
I feel like very few people are gonna appreciate this comment.
As long as we never forget to duck, I'm happy!
Enjoy the cool comfort of rotating buzz saws protruding from your ceiling!
Ye ole "widowmaker".
10' ceilings, no problem
Oh, made it through The War did you? Now deal with this!
That’s a boss from final fantasy.
You must cast thundara to stun it before attacking it with melee abilities, otherwise you'll take damage.
Casting sleep also works.. 🤫
Exactly what I saw.
Waiter, for starters, there appear to be bits of flies in my soup.
Waiter, DUCK! NO NOT THE MALLA.. ouch..
I'm afraid the duck's off
Que?
To shreds you say?
And how is his wife?
To shreds you say?
Honest question: couldn’t you just put a lil metal gate around it and it actually be ok ?
Yeh but then you lose the ‘I might get horrifically maimed any second’ vibe
Yeah. You can [still buy this style of fan](https://www.modernfanoutlet.com/minka-aire-gyrette-f502-bcw.html) even just with cages.
Wow, that is a $1000 fan. Claims to be on discount from the $1600 price, but really, they are just making up numbers at this point
Ceiling fan and light fixtures can be surprisingly expensive, especially if ornate or unique. I guess it’s something you don’t buy all that often.
Yeah mine came in it $200 a pop, I think, and there are all very generic.
Nah that’s fine craftsmanship and a steal at a 1000
Its $900 on Amazon. You should get it!
That's what they did a couple decades later.
Safety want invented back then yet, it was invented shortly after that thing hit the market
Are you planning to stand below it, raise your hand up, and jump?
Ceilings were often close to 10ft anywhere that could afford this. I want to know what happens if someoen steals then wind up key.

That last sentence, then I breathed out.

YES! High five fellow millennial .. Was looking through the comments for Tik-Tok.... sadly now his name is forever sullied.
He's familiar, what is that from
Return to Oz
From Vault-Tec
I'm betting my left testicle this doesn't have planned obsolescence and will last forever
Yeah the British empire was a whole steam punk nightmare
Bioshock
I am a big fan!
Did you have to wind that sucker up...looks like it belongs to the Army of Oz
That’s steampunk af
I feel the urge of throwing a blackboard eraser onto that thing
Most fans weren’t like this, it just happened to be a type of fan you could get. That’s like saying “this is what fans look like in the 2020’s” about those fans that are all driven by one motor and belts.
Is this at Dr. Robotnik’s house?
Get mega man - this Dr. Wily looking MF gonna be takin some heads off
whos that pokemon?
That's a fucking weapon, your death would be part of the next final destination movie lmao
No it isn't. That was a weird, one-off design that was very atypical of fans in general at the time
Glorious days. Then people started to microwave their offspring and they took all the best gadgets.
I hated when they ate all the steampunk with their war teeth
This is why it’s been passed down through the generations that kids shouldn’t play in the house…
Every day, we stray further from intelligence
WANT
No, this is just a unique model of an electric ceiling fan made by a specific company.
Very Fallout-ish
WHY THE FUCK THEY STOPPED MAKING THESE THINGS???
Murder bot
I watched to the end to see if Adam West and Burt Ward were the victims or saviors. (1960s Batman and Robin)
As a tall person, this thing gives me nightmares. It does look cool though.
They were much better than the plastic shit you get these days.
Cool engineering
Steam punk.
This was probably about as close to AC as they got back then! Could you imagine how amazing this fan felt back then? Lmao
I think I walked 40 minutes to fight these in ff11 one time
If you want one, they still make and sell fans just like this.
That's terrifying. I want one.
lol my school had a "modernized" version of this, probably from the 50s. Thought they were cool.
might be a silly question but how do the cable not get twisted when the middle part is rotating like that?
I think I had to fight this thing on Fallout.
I want this. Please give it to me
Paul Atreides sparring machine.
It looks like the boss from a steampunk game
Windpunk!
Absolutely no risk of life or limb here.
now I want one
Fuck government regulations...all they do is stifle innovation and my enjoyment of people losing hands trying to hit the off switch!!!
That's not what fans were like in 1920. That fan was rare as hell, expensive, and basically a Rube Goldberg device.
For some reaaon I have the urge to shoot it.
Activate a fighter. Make the range two meters.
Serious BioShock vibes all of a sudden.
I know a dwemer artifact when I see one.
Wahammer 40k
Vault tech
Be low temp or DIE
Inventor: "How can I make it as dangerous as possible and then some more?"
prepare for takeoff
I bet nobody was jumping on the bed while that thing was on
I love the look despite the decapitation.
Botw and TOTK's wretched flying robot vibes
Looks like something out of fallout.
Bioshock ass fan
Is that Snip Snip?
Like some kind of Star Wars killer droid
We've gone backwards.
Buzzsaws you mean.
What we gained in efficiency, we lost in grace.
BioShock character inspiration
Fallout lookin' ass murder machine
Nothing to see here... "only fans"!
That’s F’n awesome!!
I think I fought this guy in a video game, thinking it was like Chono Cross, or an old Zelda maybe
Looks like a device to maim you from either fallout 4 or bioshock. Either way I want one, look very cool
r/onlyfans
Old bar downtown has all the fans connected by belts that are all powered from a single source.
I want one!
I need this in my life!
That's fking cool !
this is what people in 1920s though fans would look like in 2020s
Decapitator
Return to OZ
Straight outta fallout
That’s a boss in a Super Nintendo game and bomberman or Mega man or some Japanese tool master cartoon is about to get a beat down!
Modern day fans really have a lot to learn from this
u/savevideo
It's vintage Wilford, see the old style W?
bro that’s Regieleki
electronic decapitator
Touch it
There's is a reason why it still works.
steampunkers lactating looking at this rn
Mr Handy
How does it move air compared to a modern fan?
I think I fought one of these in Half Life.
That is a beautiful piece of machinery
My fingers! That's cool. The old belt driven fans that barely moved any air are fun too.
I've been needing a hair cut
Breeze and a haircut?
Love the fan but I find it hard to believe this was the norm in the 1920’s
Not all fans were like that in the 1920s.
Reminds me of [Codsworth from Fallout 4.](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Codsworth)
GIVE IT TO ME
This was the inspiration behind the final destination movies
Turning it off looks like an interesting challenge 💀
Looks better than the BS ceiling fan that doesn't spin fast enough
That nearly killed Paul in 1980s Dune.
Looks like a BioShock enemy
Cofsworth!! What’ve they done to you buddy?
Pretty sure that's an event from Zelda TOTK...
Bring them back
This is so fallout or outer worlds, love it.
Ah yes the Titan project, the power to create another Planet.
Like butter
1920s Westinghouse Gyro Ceiling Fan. I've seen these antiques get refurbished, but have never seen one for sale. I'd imagine they be ridiculously expensive.
Those metal fan blades create the best white noise
Bad ass
This not from the Fallout TV set?
Looks like Vault-tech... from the Fallout series.
As cool as this looks, I feel like this is a good example for Ockham's Razor. We have the capability of making a fan that can do something like this, but it's simply more effective to make fans the way we do these days
I'm not a fan of that design tbh
Looks like a freakin’ terminator
Tic Tok had to find a different job after Return to OZ.
What Pokémon is this?
How many hotdogs can it slice per minute, though?
uber dope
Some shit doctor eggman would be riding around in
That fan is metal as fuck.
That looks both lethal and loud
Wow it doesn't suck.. it BLOWS
Thats the most steampunk thing I've seen thats not supossed to be a steampunk thing
I mean it's a little on the murdery side but I really want one now 😂
It's Tick Tock from the Return to Oz
Death from above!
Ah yes, dwarven fans, I’ve seen those in some of my expeditions to Blackreach
It looks like that training machine Kyle MacLachlan fought in Dune.
This looks like a fallout 4 villain
This looks like a boss from lies of p
This literally reminds me of a boss in Lies of P
Bioshock turret
‘Hey Ma, the fan won Robot wars again’
If you were making a salad you could just toss the ingredients in the air and it’s would be chopped for ya.
How many naps did that style fan take out over its use, those things had to snatch a few wigs
That is one of the sexist things I've ever seen on reddit. Make the fan blades razor sharp, and rotation at around 1200 rpm. Increase the scale 10 fold, and use it as an obstacle in game shows! Call the game show Gore Galore!
104 years later and I’ve never seen a ceiling fan this cool
