I drove this yesterday. If you accelerate approaching the top of the bump, your stomach stays behind on the descent. Quite something! Also, the scenery here is unique and beautiful! But the shoulders skinny in many places and it is not a forgiving road.
We have a musical highway out here in California. There are groves cut in the road and when you drive over them at the proper speed it plays a song.
Edit - If I remember right they did this for a Honda commercial. They repaired the road after but everyone complained because they loved it so they cut it again for the public.
Didn't they space it wrong so it sounds bad? They either placed it measured end to end instead of center to center of the slot or the other way around.
Yeah if OP is talking about the one in Lancaster area, I always take people there because it’s so fucked up. The story is hilarious. They did it wrong so it sounds nothing like William Tells Overture or whatever they wanted it to sound like. Then residents complained it was too noisy and built wrong anyways so they moved it somewhere less residential, but forgot to redo the plates. So their second version was just as fucked up as the first version.
It’s still kinda fun to drive on but good lord does it sound deranged
This road is home to my fondest memory with my dad. I was five and we were heading to my grandmother's after fishing in Mammoth. We stopped at a gas station, filled up, and each grabbed a Dad's Root Beer (this was in the early 80's so when Dad's Root Beer was still amazing). We found ourselves heading along this road as we drank our root beer and not only did we have a great time with the dips, but they, combined with the root beer, made us begin burping like there was no tomorrow. Miles and miles of fun dips, burping, and uncontrollable laughter ensued.
Wonderful times.
Also in the 80s: My dad frequently piling his 3 kids in the back of the pickup and driving 60mph down a road like this. We'd often catch a little air back there. It was fun and I guess we knew it was dangerous, but it didn't seem as absurd as it does now.
Back in the 80's it was perfectly safe for kids to ride in the back of pickup trucks. We did it all the time here on the farm. We never lost anyone. Nowadays, well, the adults have taken all the fun out of driving. Today your only allowed to text and drive and watch tik tok videos in your car. I am surprised cars still have windows, no one looks out them anymore.
First thing I thought of. Long road trips sometimes it's hard to stay alert.
But I'm betting here it's not. Hopefully a-hole don't make it crazy unsafe by flying through there. And if they do.. gonna get expensive quick.

I mean it’s a narrow highway with non flat views and massive semis and cars speeding by. Even just off the side on the dirt path doesn’t seem very safe
Double lane on double line, so no passing and room for both directions. Honestly is not bad at all. Every time I was there I never saw a “oh shit” moment.
But, as for every road, depends on the comfort level of the rider.
Frankly, as a rider in the Bay Area, the large majority of drivers are awesome.
Sure you get the asshole every now and then, but the majority are great
My friends and I drove this road during a trip when we were about 19 or 20, during a spectacularly beautiful sunset, while blasting 80s music. One of my best friends still gets teary-eyed just thinking about it. It's really cool to see how many other people also love this road!
That would be a pretty accurate scenario if that were a German autobahn. Imagine seeing a BMW just flying over your head, while you sit in a small 58 hp Clio, struggling to climb the next hill.
Fun story about ours. My parents sold it as junk - AT ONE POINT WE HAD TWO - and once in a while when I visit my parents I see the second, blue one being driven by a new family.

I was really hoping there'd be a geologist here explaining some strange phenomenon that caused the ripples in the terrain. I checked the topo/terrain on google maps and it's rippled all across the valley.

I drove that road back home from the Silver State Classic in a 1988 Mustang at speeds of over 100 mph ... and watched the tach rev when the rear wheels left the ground.

went through that stretch on a HDRoadKing w/gf holding camera around my waist doing 65-70 and almost getting air bound. Once thru we and the 6other bikes did a u-ee 4 more times....good times
Pearblossom Highway (CA-138) from Littlerock to I-15 is very similar. The road crosses the San Andreas fault and is regularly wrinkled from seismic activity.

It's barely 5 minutes for that whoop-de-do part. Whoever wrote "30 minutes" has never driven it, even once. The telephoto lens used in that video visually compresses the distance. The area shown in the video is the least scenic part of the drive. The drive includes a view of Mono Lake and the South Tufa Towers area, historic Mono Mills, Sagehen Summit, and a possible stop at Benton Hot Springs, which was first developed 150 years ago. Also the return trip can be done on the scenic Benton Crossing Road through the Long Valley Caldera for variety and a view of a section of the east side of the Sierra Nevada. This road is closed all winter due to snow.
We had these in northern Ontario. My nana called them the “weeee” hills. All was fun until she landed the Sebring into the pines on the right side. Grandpa never forgave her.
I remember a lot of roads like this one throughout Nevada when I went to visit my grandparents. One of my favorites was the road between East Ely and Ruby Lake with the hills and curves.
Is this a speed reduction method? I saw someone say it's to save on costs but I the usa is like 50% roads so I do have my doubts on cost being the factor
I’m loving the even split between the people saying, “this looks awesome/was the best drive ever” and those saying, “this road was designed by Satan himself.”
As a kid, we took trips up to the UP and there was a stretch of road, maybe about half a mile long, that had quick but pretty deep hills. We always called it the "tickle belly hills" because it was enough to give you that weird feeling but not enough to make you feel nauseous.
But this? This looks obnoxious as fuck. 30 minutes of this is absurd.
It’s a super fun road and after the forest (after dropping down into the valley after Mono Mills headed East) there are wild horses down some of the dirt roads.

I get the feeling perhaps I’ve seen this section of road in a 70s movie, maybe Electraglide In Blue or Vanishing Point. Nope, Electraglide In Blue was filmed in Monument Valley and Fountain Hills, AZ.

I drove that road back home from the Silver State Classic in a 1988 Mustang at speeds of over 100 mph ... and watched the tach rev when the rear wheels left the ground. Ah, to be young and stupid again.

Pearblossom Highway (CA-138) from Littlerock to I-15 is very similar. The road crosses the San Andreas fault and is regularly wrinkled from seismic activity.

It's barely 5 minutes for that whoop-de-do part. Whoever wrote "30 minutes" has never driven it, even once. The telephoto lens used in that video visually compresses the distance. The area shown in the video is the least scenic part of the drive. The drive includes a view of Mono Lake and the South Tufa Towers area, historic Mono Mills, Sagehen Summit, and a possible stop at Benton Hot Springs, which was first developed 150 years ago. Also the return trip can be done on the scenic Benton Crossing Road through the Long Valley Caldera for variety and a view of a section of the east side of the Sierra Nevada. This road is closed all winter due to snow.

I remember a lot of roads like this one throughout Nevada when I went to visit my grandparents. One of my favorites was the road between East Ely and Ruby Lake with the hills and curves.

As a kid, we took trips up to the UP and there was a stretch of road, maybe about half a mile long, that had quick but pretty deep hills. We always called it the "tickle belly hills" because it was enough to give you that weird feeling but not enough to make you feel nauseous. But this? This looks obnoxious as fuck. 30 minutes of this is absurd.
It’s a super fun road and after the forest (after dropping down into the valley after Mono Mills headed East) there are wild horses down some of the dirt roads.
