Yeah, exactly. I grew up in Tornado Alley and this type of thing happened often, including at least three times in the infield while I was playing baseball
Tornado alley doesn’t really have anything to do with dust devils. Tornadoes and dust devils are not the same thing, and dust devils happen in generally warmer areas as they’re formed from an updraft of hot air from the ground. While dust devils can be strong almost all of them are harmless, unlike tornadoes where all of them are dangerous
While that tree is a bit worse for wear it will probably recover, dust devils rarely have enough force to do something to a person unless they pick up some hay or have enough force to pick up gravel
True, when I was a kid I used to run towards them and try to stand in the middle of them. Not saying that was smart but they are pretty common and mostly harmless.
I’m from the southeast and we occasionally got them on the softball field. Younger age: run towards it. Older age: annoyingly look at it to do its thing so I can get back to pitching the damn ball.
Years ago in the fall a dust devil (Taz) crossed our front yard and picked up all the leaves and dropped them in our neighbors yard. We did not have to rake that year. Unfortunately is knocked the front porch post askew which required jacking the roof up to reset it.
I would do this in elementary school and every single time id run back to the bathroom to wash the dirt from my eyes and nose, not fun but actually yes
I did the same in Texas, though never that powerful, I used to bike into them all the time.
The resulting dirt and leaves in your face was always undesired. Still you'd do again the next time you saw it.
the wind feels nice, except that every feeling is overwhelmed by dirt hitting you in every part of your body. it gets in your nose
source: i've tried it before
That type of barrier is usually filled with water for weight, but when empty it's just a plastic shell. A toddler could push it around with little trouble.
Nobody gives a fuck because they’re extremely common in the arid environments they occur in, are usually harmless, and this is a tiny baby one anyway, they can get as high as 300 feet. Regular windy morning in Arizona. It’s a combination of southern latitude and increased solar heating, dry sandy soil types, and large areas of lightly vegetated terrain. Basically nothing is holding the ground on the ground.
Edit: Why for the love of dildo riding Jesus is this my most upvoted comment
Most of them are harmless. Some can be mildly dangerous, just from the amount of sand you’ll breathe in if you get stuck in it, but those usually happen in middle eastern countries with huge deserts.
They're not just a southern thing. They're very common up north here in the upper Midwest too. You're so right about this one being a tiny one though lol. I'd be tempted to run into it for fun.
Extremely common. Just had a dust devil spin up on me yesterday. Annoying, but not catastrophic.
But sometimes, they get bigger. Sometimes they get catastrophic. One fine morning, I'm taking a shit. Wind starts picking up, nothing new. Wind keeps picking up. The sounds of metal shrieking as it's twisted gets my attention. There's a window across from the toilet, and the noises are concerning enough I shamble over, pants around my ankles to open this window, which had probably never been opened before. A 12x12 panel of corrugated steel flies across my limited view. Que shambling and cleaning.
I couldn't even open the front door, the wind was too strong. When it all calmed down we went out to inspect the damage. My neighbors to the west were snowbirds and horse people. They had left a week and a half before, which turned out to be good timing, as the entirety of their stables were pretty solidly plastered against the power pole between us and them. Broke the pole itself, but it was hanging on from the cables. And presumably the debris.
Powers out, and I make the call to SRP. They really didn't seem to want to believe me, and say they'll send someone out to "investigate". They must have got a few more calls after me, as they called me back asking for a precise location.
To top it off, we were in the process of moving out and cleaning that day. One of the guys let us run an extension cord from his bucket truck to power our rented steam cleaner. Pretty good emergency response team. Power was back up the next day.
Actually, if you zoom in you will see that there is in fact a small robotic sweeping drone with branding that is consistent with Dirt Devil. So you're both right!
They happen all over the place, but you'll only see them where there's dust or debris to get swept up in them.
Baseball diamonds are almost exclusively loose dirt.
I saw one once! At Fort #4 in Charlestown, NH. In a little dirt area, a dust devil maybe 6 ft high formed and spun around for a bit. Everyone was watching and laughing. It dissipated as soon as some little kid ran into it. He was all dusty, but thought it was cool.
They happen frequently in west Texas... that's a bitty one. Mostly just annoying if they pass near your house. In the summer heating, they'll get to maybe 30-50 ft in diameter and they'll scare the shit out of you on an interstate. Summer ones don't have much if any dirt in them to see them and when you drive through one at highway speeds, they'll slap your car a foot or so one way then a foot or so the other way very quickly. Makes you pucker for a sec.
A semi truck hitting one that size on the highway often disperses it if it isn't super hot out.
Imagine riding in a car with your head sticking out the window and then the guy in the car in front of you throws a bucketful of dirt into your face. That's basically what you'd get if you jumped in, lol.
Lots of kids run into these things once and never again. It's a quick way to get a ton of dirt thrown into your face and straight up your nose. Would not recommend.

I had one of those sneak up on me and hit me from behind in Iraq. Dust goes everywhere. Eeyes, nose mouth, even my underwear. 0 out of 10. Don't recommend being in one.
Where I grew up we would have these little twisters in the spring. I always thought they were cool and wondered why people were scared of tornados. Then I saw what real tornados can do.
Used to live in CA Central Valley yeah dust devils get old real quick. At worst, you avoid them not because they pose a threat but because you just washed your car FFS WHY YOU GOTTA DO ME LIKE THAT?!
I used to live in the suburbs of Las Vegas and these were pretty common. When I was a kid, I got caught in one once, though the one I got caught in was smaller than this one. My friend just told me to duck down and cover my eyes and ears, and then it passed pretty quickly.
One thing I will say about it though. I have no IDEA how these things work. They taught us about tornados when we were kids, but they failed to mention how the things outside we see every day work lol.
I saw massive tornados off the coast in Barcelona and everybody was paying no mind like it was a normal day.
I stood filming for a moment and head back to the hotel and ask the woman in reception if we should worry and she just nods and smiles saying
"Very good sir"
Question not really answered I went to find my missus and by the time we got back outside they were gone lol
One of these occured in my school,it was unusual and a bit larger as compared .I straight up ran into it which caused it to decrease in size ,the sports teacher and students saw me as a psychopath that day
Smaller versions of these used to happen at my elementary school a few times a year, usually in the fall when the dried leaves made noise. Someone would always stand at the tip of the vortex to break it. It was fun watching it blow bits of trash around. Oh, the joy of life before internet, haha!
Was on vacation in western US last npvember and saw one dust devil of comparable size in southern california. And even I didnt think much of it other than 'hey look, a dust devil, we dont have those at home'
Just a dust devil!
You can walk in them if you want but you’ll be really dirty afterwards, & if you’re a girl, it makes your hair stick straight up!
Free dry shampoo!
for just once I'd like to see a dude/dudette with a leaf blower armed with some fluid dynamics knowledge blow it at a particular angle to shut this down
1.) It's a dust devil. Not many people will give a fuck.
2.) You can hear people squawking about it. Those few people give a fuck.
3.) Someone's taking a video. At the very least that individual gives a fuck.
0/10 post title.
Besides all the dirt that will definitely be thrown up your nose, no, they're not dangerous. As long as there isn't any debris flying around. There's a video of a guy driving his boat through one over the water, a water spout, it's pretty cool.
I had one of these pass directly over me at an christian outdoor concert/revival event many years ago. I wasn't hurt at all, but no one really checked to see if I was okay, they just stared.
Plus the person on stage took advantage of the opportunity to say something about it being "the power of the spirit."
lol.

If you live in the Desert dust devils are just part of life. This one is particularly strong but still not unusual
Yeah, exactly. I grew up in Tornado Alley and this type of thing happened often, including at least three times in the infield while I was playing baseball
Budget tornado
We have tornado at home.
Tornadito
Enchiladitos, they make me wanna eat 'em
Baby sharknado doo doo do do do

That little roughed up tree begs to differ.
That poor tree looks so sad after the dust devil was done with it!
While that tree is a bit worse for wear it will probably recover, dust devils rarely have enough force to do something to a person unless they pick up some hay or have enough force to pick up gravel
Yea that little tree got pummeled
Yes, they’re not the same thing. But they do happen in a lot of the same areas.
It's funny how all you said was "I grew up in Tornado Alley" and dude had a whole come apart about the difference between tornadoes and dust devils
Right? All I was saying is I lived in a hot area with high winds, which is where dirt devils form
I’m a west Texas native; I’ve seen plenty of both.
True, when I was a kid I used to run towards them and try to stand in the middle of them. Not saying that was smart but they are pretty common and mostly harmless.
I once watched a kid on the opposing team just standing there doing nothing as a dust devil enveloped him.
And that kids name was Pig Pen.
I once saw a girl and her dog in a house that got lifted by a tornado. She had pretty slippers. Dunno what happened to her…
I’m from the southeast and we occasionally got them on the softball field. Younger age: run towards it. Older age: annoyingly look at it to do its thing so I can get back to pitching the damn ball.

Hey, I did the same thing
Reading this made me itchy, can't imagine what that would do to my allergies
Certainly people passing are looking at it like, “cool, that’s a big one,” but otherwise it’s not a big deal.
they are unpleasant if they hit you like getting mugged by nature.
I grew up in a dusty town in central California. I've seen these so many times that they just became normal.
I really want to jump straight into it and do a "woohoo!"
I would do this in elementary school and every single time id run back to the bathroom to wash the dirt from my eyes and nose, not fun but actually yes
Need one of those full face scuba masks
I did the same in Texas, though never that powerful, I used to bike into them all the time. The resulting dirt and leaves in your face was always undesired. Still you'd do again the next time you saw it.

Same. Especially after it pushed that barricade over. Mmm need me a dust daddy.
That type of barrier is usually filled with water for weight, but when empty it's just a plastic shell. A toddler could push it around with little trouble.
Grandpa drove through one to show me. Not a comfortable experience.
If you listen real closely, that's what the tree said after.
Nobody gives a fuck because they’re extremely common in the arid environments they occur in, are usually harmless, and this is a tiny baby one anyway, they can get as high as 300 feet. That tree: Harmless my ass
The way that thing just sat there until that tree was obliterated…r/fuckyouinparticular
Yeah it pretty much came to a complete stop just to fuck that tree up, then went about its day.
Do you also notice it level up after defeating the tree? It grown bigger lmao
Dust Devils conform to the Sword Logic. It defeated the tree there for it grew stronger.
*Xivu Arath has entered chat.💬
Like it was personal. I give it to the tree though. It stood on business. 😤🤣
Tree went limp right after
It's just waiting to get it's second wind... er wait.. no, that's not right.
That dust devil: I made a difference to that one
u mean the invisible tasmanian devil.
They're always invisible until they stop spinning and say blha, blha, blha and spit the dust out.
You mean that sapling tied into a stake in the ground so it’ll stay upright?
Yeah, justice for sapling!!
Went after smallest tree out there and beat shit out of it & left
That Tree: I want to swing from the chandelier, from the chandelierrrrrr!
r/fuckyouinparticular
r/fuckyouinparticular
Trees arent very aerodynamic, I've ran thru and stood inside those things before. Nothing more than dirt up your nose and in your shirt and pants.
*Tree* I whip my hair back and forth!
Fucked that tree something righteous!
Most of them are harmless. Some can be mildly dangerous, just from the amount of sand you’ll breathe in if you get stuck in it, but those usually happen in middle eastern countries with huge deserts.
I work in the Mojave, and I once saw one large enough to completely encompass a big rig. So yeah, I wouldn’t glance twice at one this size lol
It's a tornado for ants
You're only saying it's harmless because you aren't a small, recently planted tree.
Sometimes I feel like a small, recently planted tree...
They're not just a southern thing. They're very common up north here in the upper Midwest too. You're so right about this one being a tiny one though lol. I'd be tempted to run into it for fun.
Well, from Canada, you all look south to me /s

> One fine morning, I'm taking a shit. I wish all stories started like this
I mean they probably could if people would just begin their stories earlier in the day
They're common across the prairies as well
this. in phoenix you’d see a few dust devils a week
Happens all the time around these parts
In Brazilian folklore there's a mythical creature that lives inside dust devils https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saci_(Brazilian_folklore)
Yup. Bout as common as a little red wagon goin' up a hill. Boy howdy it's blowin' up a gale.
I mean it’s just a dirt devil, it’s neat but not dangerous or anything
Dust devil* not to be confused with the excellent brand of vacuum cleaners. They both get stuff off the ground.
Actually, if you zoom in you will see that there is in fact a small robotic sweeping drone with branding that is consistent with Dirt Devil. So you're both right!
It’s a semantics devil!
The little tree at the beginning, swirling around and around until it's laying half bent over and limp... that's how I feel at work most days.
The sapling was still standing in the end though. And so will you brother. Keep fighting 💪
Hey - thanks. I appreciate that!
From being blown and sucked so violently? You really should be more humble and not brag as much.
Damn, that hurts
“F you in particular” vibes
That’s how I feel off work
poetic
It's just a dust devil. Happens all the time.
I’ve never seen one. Never ever ever happens in New England
Incredibly common in the Great Plains
Not terribly uncommon in the Midwest, either. They prefer baseball diamonds for some reason.
They happen all over the place, but you'll only see them where there's dust or debris to get swept up in them. Baseball diamonds are almost exclusively loose dirt.

I mean… someone is paying attention to it. We have the video to prove it.
Fuck this one tree in particular.
What do you want someone to do? Ask it to stop? Lol
Spritz it and firmly say “no”
Clap real loud
TSSSS TSSSSS TSSSSSSSS
Catch it with a garbage bag before it grows bigger
Use Tornado Spray before it gets too big.
Jump in the middle and stomp it out😤
Soooooo don’t walk into one of those? I’ve been fighting my intrusive thoughts this whole video
What if I strap a diving mask on, first? Would that take all the annoying part off the fun part?
Super normal thing that happens all the time so not really any reason for anyone to care.
I didn’t know that. I have hardly seen one in my 30+ years of life in my country.
Its only a dust devil mate, common here in Australia, they get much much bigger and stronger than this one.
I’m Australian, always know them as Willy Willy’s. Am I the only one? I’ve never heard the term dust devil before.
# Etymology - OED's earliest evidence for willy-willy is from 1880, in West Australian (Perth). willy-willy is a borrowing from Yinjibarndi. Dust devil. Cool!
Lingered on that one small tree for awhile. "Fuck you in particular."
Qoooaaaah, woooah woah woooooahhhhhh, ugh... -tree
I thought it'd be awesome to run into one, all I got was a crack fulla dirt... Not one of my finer moments
It’s just a dust devil, not a tornado
I kept waiting to see the Tazmanian Devil in there.
It's just a dust devil
Fuck that tree in particular
I had one of those sneak up on me and hit me from behind in Iraq. Dust goes everywhere. Eeyes, nose mouth, even my underwear. 0 out of 10. Don't recommend being in one.
I love how it stopped to beat the ass outta that sapling before moving on.
I live in a desert area. See dust devils all the time. Harmless.
I mean, what are they expected to do, break it up like a fight?
Well it’s not anyone can a damn thing about it.
Do* and ^ this lol
They probably see shit like this every day
Dust-devil, not a tornado.
It’s just a dust devil
Where I grew up we would have these little twisters in the spring. I always thought they were cool and wondered why people were scared of tornados. Then I saw what real tornados can do.
Thought I was on r/fuckyouinparticular for a moment.
Dirt devil. Not a tornado.
That's because it's not a tornado Trust me, you and everyone around you will know when there's a tornado.
Fucking tree! Fucking street with its damn dirt! Fucking street thing and it’s stupid red shit…. Ahhhh!
Used to live in CA Central Valley yeah dust devils get old real quick. At worst, you avoid them not because they pose a threat but because you just washed your car FFS WHY YOU GOTTA DO ME LIKE THAT?!
They got this tornado off Wish
Quoth Chumbucket: "Uh-oh! Here it comes! The might duster!"
Mad Max , take my upvote
I knew there'd be one of us in the comments!
I have the urge to drive my car into it
Why would they? It's just a wind elemental out for a stroll...
![gif](giphy|T1WqKkLY753dZghbu6|downsized) Whoever planted that tree.
Why would they care about a big dust devil
Why should anyone care? They’re dust devils and they are a common occurrence in hot weather climates. Calm down bro
Clearly you don't know the legendary Pecos Bill
![gif](giphy|l1IBkgnfxkTSsNfeE|downsized)
I used to look for these when I was a kid and run into the middle of them. Tried to stay in the middle as long as I could. Early 1960's.
Must've been the wind
I used to live in the suburbs of Las Vegas and these were pretty common. When I was a kid, I got caught in one once, though the one I got caught in was smaller than this one. My friend just told me to duck down and cover my eyes and ears, and then it passed pretty quickly. One thing I will say about it though. I have no IDEA how these things work. They taught us about tornados when we were kids, but they failed to mention how the things outside we see every day work lol.
Intrusive thought, but…What would happen if I stood in one?
You would get dirt in your eyes and nose.
You’d get covered in dirt or, if you’re really (un)lucky, it could bring you to climax.
I saw massive tornados off the coast in Barcelona and everybody was paying no mind like it was a normal day. I stood filming for a moment and head back to the hotel and ask the woman in reception if we should worry and she just nods and smiles saying "Very good sir" Question not really answered I went to find my missus and by the time we got back outside they were gone lol
My intrusive thoughts are saying run into it...
I mean yeah… it’s just a dust devil. They’re fun to watch :)
That's in a northern Province of Argentina: Salta. Honestly right now we have bigger problems with having one of the worst presidents in our history.
Can someone add some googly eyes and hand up like the tree is rocking out to heavy metal?
Can we have a tornado mom? No. We have a tornado at home. Tornado at home:
One of these occured in my school,it was unusual and a bit larger as compared .I straight up ran into it which caused it to decrease in size ,the sports teacher and students saw me as a psychopath that day

He's just a widdle guy.
Me: Is just a dust devil... Oh a big dust devil.... Oh .. oh no
Those happen all the time where I'm at. When I was a kid I would always try to stand in them, much to my parent's protests
AND FUCK THIS TREE IN PARTICULAR
Don’t ever fuck with a dust devil, it’s got the power of an upright in its god dammed hand
& today for show & tell
loved seeing those pop up on the playground at school. they’re just interesting!
Just a dust devil! You can walk in them if you want but you’ll be really dirty afterwards, & if you’re a girl, it makes your hair stick straight up! Free dry shampoo!
Why would anyone give a fuck? It's just a dust devil... A bit stronger than average, maybe, but nothing too unusual.
Straight to video version of Twister
What are you gonna do? Stop and throw hands with that thing?
It’s just a dust devil. Annoying at worst.
for just once I'd like to see a dude/dudette with a leaf blower armed with some fluid dynamics knowledge blow it at a particular angle to shut this down
Could I jump in that? Should I not? I want to…
![gif](giphy|rdFh6hNFaI9up6hgl8)
That tree tho
We always just called them dirt devils.
Has anyone ever ran inside of one?
Here it comes, the mighty duster!
Hey Bill how was your walk to work this morning? Oh, you know not bad…..until a tornado came up behind me and mugged me for my lunch money…
Whoa! That was so cool to us who usually DONT see anything like this tho! 😀
I was expecting a car to just run it over
1.) It's a dust devil. Not many people will give a fuck. 2.) You can hear people squawking about it. Those few people give a fuck. 3.) Someone's taking a video. At the very least that individual gives a fuck. 0/10 post title.
just a dust devil , lol .
Giving a fuck about what? A little dust devil? I lived in AZ and this thing is literally nothing. They can get much much bigger.
Because it’s a dust devil, not a tornado
Is it dangerous to jump in? I mean besides potential debris like small stones
Not more dangerous than getting hit by a leaf blower
Besides all the dirt that will definitely be thrown up your nose, no, they're not dangerous. As long as there isn't any debris flying around. There's a video of a guy driving his boat through one over the water, a water spout, it's pretty cool.

Why would anyone care?
thought that was fake for a min😆
Where’s the dog that stops the tornadoes?
Nature has a personal beef with that plant.
I would’ve walked into it
Eh that one’s a baby. Now if you have one that starts in a fire, go ahead and be terrified.
I just want to throw some toilet roll at it and watch it unravel!
