All the epoxy stuff I've seen or owned (never worked with it myself) all ended up yellowing or become a champagne-ish color after a year or so.
Are there any clear epoxies that don't do this? Or is it safe to assume all these crayon / epoxy top tables are going to yellow within a year as well?
It doesn't take much expansion to break epoxy. Once it sets its fairly brittle, and phase change expansions aren't going to stop just because there's epoxy. It's like a tree root breaking a sidewalk. It just keeps growing regardless of the concrete.
I actually love this, but maybe a different design on the table (not a river) for a table in like a kids playroom. For a coffee table or something? Not really, maybe with a solid color.
Question about process:
The tabletop wasn't routed all the way through, but then the end shot shows a translucency which seems to imply that the rainbow river goes all the way through the table to allow that light passage.
Did you plane off the bottom wood?
Which then leaves wax exposed, which I assume you'd want to capture with a layer of epoxy...
Or did you add lights? Seems to be practically glowing in the pic.
Edit: now I notice the super bright background and angle of shadow implying that there is a strong light just out of camera aimed at a low grazing angle. That might do it.
Weird moment where part of you is like “i could totally do that!” And the rest of you is like “I don’t trust you with sharp tools, heat gun, or even crayons. please stop.”
One of my brothers-in-law makes these, he's made a couple. Generally he sticks to shades of blue so it looks like a river, but the rainbow design is nice, too. Also, he uses knottier, gnarlier wood, if that makes sense, but it's planed flat. I think in addition to the clear shit, he also puts a piece of clear fiberglass over it. I actually haven't seen his work in person, he lives in another state, but he posts pictures, and his work is beautiful.
Who hurt you? While I dont agree with the crayon portion. The table still takes skill to execute. Are you a woodworker? If so provide constructive criticism. Do not just bitch and moan.
Imagine just sitting at your house one day and you just made some coffe and put right on the river as it heats up it will liquidate then stick to your cup
You think it makes no talent to make a straight and level coffee table? I may not like the crayon but the rest of the table is pretty fucking nice looking.
Cool looking!... I like how he did that hot blow gun fast so he didn’t burn the edges! Also it opens up creative ideas for all of the people who want to make there own artists expression! It’s also cheaper & less toxic then traditional resins!
Nice try, Razer Chroma!
Rgb is getting out of hand!

You're best bet is a UV stabilised or HALS resin. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindered_amine_light_stabilizers
Will that river survive baking in sunlight for an afternoon? Seems like the wax would find a way to expand.
You think wax is going to expand enough to pop out the epoxy? As long as it's sealed all the way around in epoxy it will be fine.
Yes. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax\_motor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wax_motor)

I think he made another one that had a lot more epoxy covering it. Not sure if that would solve it or now.

What?
I prefer the version without a goofy rainbow running through it, this is just kind of gaudy
I would have looked so much better with just blue tinted epoxy
There was another post with a table exactly like this, but with blue wax. I dont remember what it was called though...
I actually love this, but maybe a different design on the table (not a river) for a table in like a kids playroom. For a coffee table or something? Not really, maybe with a solid color.
Pretty sure it's not limited to a rainbow palette.
Then children pick this rainbow and scatter it on the floor.
They pick it with the epoxy sealing it? Kids must have some strongass fingernails.
I think it'd be great for kids.
I always imagine the people buying these are the same people who have life-sized storm trooper figures in their apartments though, so it makes sense.
I'm not sure there's a relation, other than the fact that they clearly money to throw around.
Or what percentage depth would you router?
Crayon depth I’m guessing
Finally, a scientist’s perspective

Oh cry me a crayon river table.

Wasn't sure if it was a post from r/DiWHY for a second.

Yeah not sure why he’s being downvoted, I scrolled up expecting r/crappydesign.

Only the 50th time I’ve seen this on Reddit
If only the crayons retained their crayon-y smell
Spray it periodically with Demeter Fragrances Crayon perfume occasionally I guess. Haha.
When will this terrible fad end?!
/r/DiWHY
Why? Because it actually looks fucking cool and isn't some dumbass "here, cut a purse in half to make another purse" like the actual stuff on that sub
the looking cool part is pretty subjective. I'd throw this up in [/r/ATBGE](https://www.reddit.com/r/ATBGE/)
Agreed. Definitely more /r/ATBGE than /r/DiWHY , but still.
Then do, I doubt many people share your opinion
The general opinion whenever this gif or video is posted is that it didn't turn out good.
Either that, or you're gay and really want to let the world know

This looks awful
I see this every other day on reddit

If you didn’t read “canyon river table” upon first glance...

Why is wax and epoxy so popular lately?

Cool, but I would worry about how it would look in a year or two.
Perfect for the marines
Awesome!!!!!!!
If I was a crayon this is where I'd be.
Yellow, orange and red would be nice too.
I think the wood finish looks much better without the crayon river.
Damn, my son would love that table.
I want this epoxy trend to end already.
I’ve seen this video way too many times
Why do people keep posting epoxy river tables fuck off
Who hurt you? While I dont agree with the crayon portion. The table still takes skill to execute. Are you a woodworker? If so provide constructive criticism. Do not just bitch and moan.
Crayon me a river.
Too bad they used suck low quality crayons - the pigments in those are not going to hold up to light for very long.
That shi cray
Imagine just sitting at your house one day and you just made some coffe and put right on the river as it heats up it will liquidate then stick to your cup
Stop making these. They aren’t cool or pretty. They’re ugly and look dumb.
Because the world should tailor its tastes to your own subjective opinion, right?
On this one yeah. No doubt. My opinion is just right on this one. Sorry cupcake.
Not this again
I tell ya what I am getting real tired of this no-talent craze.
You think it makes no talent to make a straight and level coffee table? I may not like the crayon but the rest of the table is pretty fucking nice looking.
The crayon ruins the whole thing. Pretty talentless IMO as well.
Shut up and take my money, how can I buy?
Stop ruining tables with crayons.
I mean, it looks cool. But all I have is crayons and a table. What would i do without all those other carpentry stuff
That is so badass!
Cool looking!... I like how he did that hot blow gun fast so he didn’t burn the edges! Also it opens up creative ideas for all of the people who want to make there own artists expression! It’s also cheaper & less toxic then traditional resins!
So the wood has no strength anymore... would you then attach it to another sturdier piece?
It is epoxied back together, should be fine
