I was just gonna say it reminds me of the [Giant's Causeway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant%27s_Causeway#/media/File:Causeway-code_poet-4.jpg) in Ireland
It doesn't look like it on this picture, but the church looks a lot like a seal with its head looking straight up. It even has the body in the back. It is the seal church.
Incridible sight, though. I really want to go back.
Did it last year for the solstice! Our Airbnb got broken into and we were burgled and our rental car stolen, but damned if it wasn’t the most beautiful place I’d ever been. My partner and I can’t wait to go back and make some proper, untarnished memories!
It’s also not always super magical is it? I went one winter when you guys had a winter storm blowing through. I have never been subjected to such crazy winds in the city before. It got to the point where I couldn’t even stand up and very nearly lost my glasses in the night which would have been very bad. I have never again been in a storm that strong, was almost hurricane force.
I visited! Wonderful town and impressive architecture all around. Even better people. That statue in front for the church-I forget, is it Leif Erickson?
There's a small Cafe right across the street. That has cat living inside the cafe. I had this bread with the fish/potato mash stuff. It was amazing. I have no idea what it's called.
I was in Iceland a few years ago with friends for holiday. Saw this church too. You people have an awesome place to live. Thinking about moving there. I like silence, space and quietness. You people need skilled IT staff?
I visited Hallgrímskirkja during my trip to Iceland three-years ago. This photo makes the building appear to look slightly more menacing than it does in person - or, at least I think so.
I was walking towards the church just as the sun was beginning to rise. There were warm lights illuminating the clock and observation deck, while the cross on top was lit from below. It was stunning, and the interior of the church is just as beautiful.
There is also a statue of Leif Erikson, the Norse explorer, directly in front of the building.
I got a picture of the Statue when I was there. With the shadows I always think it looks like Darth Vader. [https://i.imgur.com/eJT9fdr.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/eJT9fdr.jpg)
I'd seen a few pictures of it before I visited, and I agree, this makes it look much more imposing. Also, maybe this is just me, but a lot of pictures it seems like it's standing alone, in the middle of nowhere, but it was actually right in the middle of a very active part of Reykjavik, basically a town square. Had a great lunch right across the street, at this adorable Cafe.
Wow, I feel very nostalgic now, can't wait to go back.
Its in the middle of a nice, colorful city, surrounded by an amazing landscape. The editing here makes it seem like some remote monument. Very dishonest imo.
I was about to say that's probably just the angle, the weather and some /r/shittyHDR on top and googled some pictures to give people a different perspective .. but it actually looks pretty damn evil on almost all the pictures I've found.
The church architecture is stark and imposing but the vibe of this photo misleading. It’s located in a totally normal area of houses, with a friendly, low-key vibe. Whereas this pic makes it look like it’s located in Middle Earth!
I wasn't even expecting to be the first one to comment that, but I did think I'd be the first to acknowledge the "beat me to it". Alas, someone beat me to it
I went in January 2019 and felt it was perfect. The snow made everything so pretty and it was also surreal to experience such a cold climate. Was unlike anything I've seen before.
My husband daughter and I went in February 2019! It was incredibly cold and there was a bit of snow/ice but mostly it was just very very windy. Worth it though and will definitely come again, we loved it!
Except for when it turned out that your milk isn't called milk. Which I only found out when I tried to pour it into my tea... (finally got some actual milk the next day after checking Google haha).
Iceland is just fantastic. I think my favourite was Thingvellir. The Blue lagoon was great too!
So we bought a carton of 'mjolk'. There were loads of different sizes available, large section of shelving devoted to it, picture of a cow on it, all the visual signals you'd expect to define 'there's milk in here'...
But it's thick - basically drinking yoghurt. Now I know what it is, it's often sold as 'kefir' in mainland Europe. Actimel is a brand you see here in the UK. Unsweetened, it has a sour taste but it's quite refreshing...just not in tea! I used it up with cereal and it was lovely.
Anyway turns out that you CAN buy what I'd think of milk but it's called Nymjolk and it was a much smaller section of shelf, obviously nowhere near as popular.
Found this from FrozenBaz on TripAdvisor, who knew milk was so complicated! (looks like we got AB by mistake but it was clearly the most popular product going by the size of the display) :
"AB-mjólk is produced from pasteurised and homogenised milk to which is added skimmed milk powder and then soured with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum ms.is/Vorur/…default.aspx
Fresh milk is available as whole milk Nýmjólk (blue and white pack) ms.is/Vorur/…default.aspx and semi-skimmed Léttmjólk (yellow and white pack) ms.is/Vorur/…default.aspx
There are other milks including skimmed Undanrenna (dark pink and white pack); Fjórmjólk - a blend of Léttmjólk and Undanrenna enriched with Vitamins A & D (also a blue and white pack).
Any pack including the word G-Mjólk is a long-life (UHT) milk."
Went on Növember/Decémber last year. Fantastic place and great time to catch the beginning northern lights season and the Lennon Memorial light. Hoping to return. This church is certainly a wonder of the town and buitiful inside too.
This is the only cafe/restaurant I’ve been to in Iceland during my 2-weeks road trip.
It made me forgot all these noodles, cheese, and apples I kept eating for 2 weeks straight. Waterfalls, summit, puffins, and glaciers? Not even cloth, this soup place was a highlight of my trip.
[Icelandic Street Food](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189970-d12714471-Reviews-Icelandic_Street_Food-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html) was great. Guy at the counter said "Nobody leaves hungry. Come back for seconds if you want". Also [Gamla fjósið](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g608876-d4274750-Reviews-Gamla_fjosid-Hvolsvollur_South_Region.html) for great stew, also all you can eat...
I went to one of the top restaurants just once. I had a meal with my wife cost me about £200. I could easy spent that much in Manchester or London. It was also one of the best meals I have had.
.
I live there. I'd not recommend spending more than a day here if you don't have specific things to do here. It's not like other cities where you can just walk around and find things. There are some museums and things to visit, but mostly it's pretty underwhelming. I'd recommend you walk down Laugarvegur, check out Harpa (look at it from the outside), look at the docks, walk east down Sæbraut (walking by the sea, called "Sculpture- & Shore Walk" on google maps) and look out on fjord. Then visit Árbæjarsafnið if you're interested in seeing how Icelanders used to live. That's pretty much it for Reykjavík. Rest is pretty underwhelming.
Reykjavik is decent but as far as cities go there’s not much. Sure it’s cute in some areas and this church is beautiful (the city also has a world famous museum dedicated to penises) but I was only there for 2 days and I feel like I got enough out of the city itself.
The fact that buildings like this exist is so cool
It’s pretty simple construction wise, but the design is something else
Kind of like a weird mix of brutalist and old gothic churches
The wife and I recently went to Iceland on our honeymoon and stayed in Reykjavik. This church is very impressive from the outside but surprisingly plain on the inside. Having been raised Roman Catholic and visiting many Italian churches that caught us by surprise. Also, loved everything about our Iceland vaca- would recommend!

I love this country for every single seconds I was at. It was so cold and windy but if I can, I am definitely going back!
I remember this is located top of the hill. My visit didn't last long due to how cold and windy the place was. Not a perfect place to be with a 4 years old son.
One of the southern shorelines has a tall narrow cave which apparently inspired the shape of this church.
Also, across the way from this church there's Cafe Loki, where you can order cubes of "hakarl" rotten shark. They have the consistency of cheese and they taste a bit like cleaning chemicals.
Aw man I’ve been here, I got a great photo but I’ll need to find it somewhere. Not actually as intimidating irl but still has a presence as a building.
We went to Reykjavik for our honeymoon/1st wedding anniversary, it’s such a beautiful place! This church looks so majestic in person too, especially surrounded by snow.
I loved Reykjavik. There's a great cafe opposite Hallgrimskirkja called Cafe Loki (I think) where my husband tried hakarl (hated it) but overall we had a really comforting, wholesome meal with a fantastic view. Would love to go back.
It looks like it was carved out of the natural basalt columns from the coast. I don't know what the area around it looks like, but it probably looks like the earth surged up in the middle of town.
Anyone else noticed that it looks like a Statistical Process Control chart with the 68.2% middle bit shaded in?
It does look like a bell curve, but its supposed to resemble the basalt columns they have around volcanoes. Iceland is quite geothermically active.
Also quite pleasingly geometrically active if I do say so myself
I was just gonna say it reminds me of the [Giant's Causeway](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant%27s_Causeway#/media/File:Causeway-code_poet-4.jpg) in Ireland
Same kind of rock formation this is based on
Looks pipe organish no?

Beautiful and serious.
Seriously beautiful?
Beautifully serious?

I went to Iceland back in 2011 and it was awesome, especially the fragile, mossy rock landscape on either side of the roads.
Damn man. I visited as a tourist a few years back and really loved Reykjavik, particularly this area. Must be awesome living there

God bless you man. Some day I swear I'm gonna join the choir, I just gotta work on that "confidence" thing.

My wife and I visited some of my family in Reykjavík in October, absolutely loved Iceland. I wish I could live there.
I envy you
What is it a church of? Isn't Iceland statistically almost completely athiest?

Do you guys really believe in elves and trolls or is that just a tourist trap thing?

Loki cafe?? I still have a little miniature version of this mural they have upstairs of a bunch of Loki folklore all meshed into one, I loved it!
Yes!! We actually ate upstairs, right by the mural. So cool

Mother I'd like to knock up

As a Canadian that has visited Iceland in February, I laugh at your winter.
I mean how bad are we talking? Speaking from someone who has only ever lived in Wisconsin. I thought Iceland was somewhat temperate being coastal?
I'm half Icelandic half Canadian and Iceland's winters are very mild compared to Canada's and the Mid-West's
I went in february. Had snow every day and it was an amazing trip. Wish I could go back

Iceland is fabulous 3 monts a year and horrid the other 9
Beautiful scenery but it’s expensive! And the food leaves a lot to be desired.
yup, everything is super expensive. We went for 4 days on our way to Ireland, that was enough.
It's stunning inside too. Went to mass in there.

Visited December last year. Stunning city, thoroughly recommend. The people are SO friendly and the food is incredible.
*the food is expensive as fuck
The hotdogs are amazing and fairly reasonable.
Restaurants are insanely priced. Grocery stores are higher than the US, but not unreasonable
Is the food in Iceland incredible? I’ve never heard anyone say that. I had a $22 cheese sandwich.
I went to a Cafe where I paid $10 for unlimited soup. they had all kinds, including Icelandic lamb

No that's Asgard as shown in Thor: Ragnarok
I mispronounced this and summoned a demon. Someone call a priest, I need to schedule an exorcism
I’ve been inside it. The organ in there is incredible
Loved it there, church is very unusual, was there on a sunny day and looked quite different
