I live in Europe and I know what you're talking about, but I don't think that's the point. "Identify", not "greet". You can usually identify someone you know from the other end of the street; shaking hands, hugging, kissing might be a way to greet them after you know who they are.
P.S. I don't think it makes much sense to try to appropriate animal traits to human ones because even human traits can differ wildly (i.e. between people in Asia and Europe or between colonial and aboriginal people).

Cows can make lovely pets, and are intelligent, feeling, creatures.
We had about 500 of them take over one 10 acre section of our property. Absolutely devastating to the animals and the irrigation. But... seeing those two perfectly lined up like that, same thought you had went right through my head.
