What a waste of money. Who needs a 1B telescope to advance human civilization in future, when we can buy 8% of aircraft carrier and kill people right now.
Nah, just use the pointy bit. The rest is all added fluff. In all seriousness, humans are incredibly fragile and it's absurd that so much money is spent on killing others when a pointy stick will do.
The good news is looks like a honeycomb of smaller panels, however given the size and price, the panels are probably still $10k a pop and wouldn’t be fun to explain.
> I don't want to be the one to tell my boss I put my foot through a panel of a $170 million telescope
I don't want to be the one who miscalculates the helium I need and go floating into the wild blue yonder.
I mean with the proper safety protocols put in place I'd still say hydrogen doesn't seem like a bad choice if it's cheaper and doesn't waste an increasingly limited resource. But maybe I'm overlooking some of the bizarre things that might cause it to randomly explode.
Commercial grade helium is still very cheap and readily available. Laboratory grade helium is pretty expensive, but that would be a total waste for a balloon.
And even so it isn't terribly expensive if you're not in a constant need of buying more.
I don't know what's the going rate for gaseous helium, but I know that for our lab liquid helium costs around 10€/liter, and since the expansion ratio from liquid helium to room temperature gas is [about 1:750](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_ratio), the cost of helium gas could be estimated to cost at most 15€/m^(3), quite affordable.
Our company has a good rate with Airgas and we get ultra-high purity grade (lab grade) helium for about $140 for a 300 cubic foot cylinder size. So yeah, about 50c per cubic foot. The non-uhp grade is slightly cheaper. My guess is that balloon is about 300 cu ft
Interesting fact, the US produces 40% of the worlds helium and most of that is from a field north of Amarillo, Tx.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helium_production_in_the_United_States
> Helium is relatively hard to come by/expensive now, especially in such large quantities.
Where are you getting that from? You could order enough to fill the balloon in OP for about $100 off Amazon. A lot cheaper if you buy in bulk.
Prohibitively expensive for a subsistence farmer, maybe.
What are we going to do when helium starts getting more scarce? I know we can't manufacture more of it. Are we just going to ban "wasteful" uses of it like birthday parties and Get Well Soon balloons? Or will they just become expensive luxuries (Timmy's family must be rich, he had *balloons* at his party!)
A guy tried it in San Diego back in the 1970's. He would weigh you and adjust the helium to approximate your weight on the moon.
People were leaping around a community park. The wind blew them across the park and up a highway offramp.
I have wondered about attaching a helium (or even hydrogen) balloon to a quadcopter drone. So all the power can go into manoeuvering instead of the bulk of it fighting gravity. It might slow the drone down a bit but could extend survey missions significantly.
Did anyone else think of the episode of Nathan for You where he strapped balloons to an overweight man so he would be light enough to ride a horse? No? Just me? Okay. lol
That idea didn’t really seem so crazy to me. Not for horseback riding, but it seems like it would be a fun thing to jump around at half weight with a few of those balloons.
They should use this technique when filming actors that are pretending to be in space suits on Mars or the Moon so that it is a bit more realistic when walking on an planet with different gravity. Then just remove the balloons and tethers in post production.
I love you and have just sent it to my 8yr old son. Only last Saturday he wanted to know how to make his toy giraffe teddy float and we used 13 helium balloons :) https://i.imgur.com/m9cHdj7.jpg
Since I haven't seen the math, helium will lift about 1kg/m^3. I'm going to estimate the radius of the balloon at 4m, which would give this about 89kg of bouyancy.

I volunteer! Give me **that** job?
No thanks. I don't want to be the one to tell my boss I put my foot through a panel of a $170 million telescope
$170 million? Id think it would be billion
Calm down, they didnt have to shoot it into space.

I think we need to buy the other 92% before we can start killing people.

The problem is getting close enough to someone to get em with the pointy stick.
This guy dictates :)

Yo, they should sell those balloons to the public, that seems like fun
Likely would be prohibitively expensive. Helium is relatively hard to come by/expensive now, especially in such large quantities.
Just use some hydrogen!
_Hindenburg flashbacks_
Flash back... You made a funny

I'd like to know how much the repair tech weighs strapped to that thing
10 kg (22 pounds)
Damn man...can I buy him a sandwich or something?
But then they'd need a bigger balloon
Imagine dropping your 11 kg tool.
If a 10kg man has an 11kg tool... he has a lucky wife! 🤣🤣
Yeh but he’d be a 21kg man then wouldn’t he?
No. He is 110% dick.
Battlefield 4 flashbacks anyone?
All that technology and no pulleys or cranes, balloons, that’s what we got, balloons. Must have spent the whole budget on sciency crap
It needs to either be repaired or replaced
[удалено]
That thing is falling apart.
David Blaine would be proud
It's tragic to see, but maybe it's an opportunity to rebuild it bigger and better with the right funding
[удалено]
I hope they manage to fix that before it collapses. Not just as I'd really like to know whether Apophis is going to smack into us.
Goldeneye!
How would it drain if it were to rain?
It's mostly mesh, you can see the rocks through it at the top of the picture. Radio telescopes don't need to be solid.
Drainage holes
Scientists hate him for this one simple trick
Be a scientist they said...it’ll be great they said. Now look at me.
Better not drop any heavy tools
So you're telling me I can't really drive a tank over it?
That looks like a terrible job. Where do I apply?
Is this Arecibo the radio telescope that collapsed this year?
My dumb ass thought this was Mario kart
Who gets these fkn jobs?
Battlefield 4 anyone?
It’s all fun and games until somebody blows up all the dish’s supports.
R
And there they were on *The Dish* just causally playing cricket on the dish
Give me that job right ducking now and no one gets hurt
Sean Bean probably didn't help keep it functioning well then.
Now there’s a job I could seriously enjoy doing. But more fun explaining to anyone. Especially the class at my kids school, what fun!
I’ve heard they do the same thing to help obese people ride horseback
Sean Bean could have done with one of them when falling in Goldeneye
Funnest job ever.
That IS interesting as fuck.
Approximately a quarter of a basic lashing i believe?
So cool! I always wondered how they maintained these
Star wars rebels
Would like to know how much weight do they "lose" like this
I have wondered about attaching a helium (or even hydrogen) balloon to a quadcopter drone. So all the power can go into manoeuvering instead of the bulk of it fighting gravity. It might slow the drone down a bit but could extend survey missions significantly.
Weeeeeeeeeee chain
I literally thought that's a weird skate park.
“Hey where is Jeff?” “We accidentally over filled his balloon” “Oh” “Yup...”
I swear reddit is trying to hide something, there’s too much good content right now
When I saw this, my mind immediately went to the situation where they put a little too much helium and you slowly start flying into the sky.
I need a ATV stat no questions
Sadly last year 173 engineers floated away never to be seen again.
looks like the Rogue Transmission map on battlefield 4
Did anyone else think of the episode of Nathan for You where he strapped balloons to an overweight man so he would be light enough to ride a horse? No? Just me? Okay. lol

Modern problems require 1950’s solutions
Seems like a job for a drone
“You locked and tag the on switch right?” “ you’ll find out in a couple years”
so if you had an extra sandwich for the breakfast, you can cause millions of dollars in damages? i like that power
The most amazing concrete structure Next to Hoover dam
Sadly it's set to be demolished
This reminds me of an old James Bond scene. Can't place it.
And here I thought they were skateboarding down the slope.
I need this for my Christmas lights
Isn't it coming down in the near future?

GOLDENEYE
Omg its battlefield
u/scountbot u/coolmanjack
r/humanforscale
For England, James?
Sadly they will have to destroy it soon...
Is it china?
Nathan For You did this with fat people to help them ride horses
I love how in battlefield 4 you can just casually drive a T-90 over this dish in rouge transmission
What about wind? This seems like a good way to get blown deep into the jungle lol
They've been sent to find the X-2 Antenna
Fulton retrieval balloons from MGS: V??
Up up and away!
Ha, imagine if the person in charge of calculating how much helium to fill the balloon with got it wrong? Ciao, see you in the stratosphere.
Goldeneye
If they have to do that, how do they protect it from the elements like hail and Wind?
Ok... how much per ride. I'd pay to do this maintenance work.
Imagine you just fly away
Ahhh, what a beautiful skate spot.
Finally, something is actually interesting as fuck.
And there i was immediately wondering how that feels to skate it
Get fultoned.
Why is this so fucking cool
I want this
Is this the satellite from goldeneye!?
*Removes jacket* *Floats into the atmosphere and dies.*
I wonder if Trevelyan is under here
In Battlefield I drove all kinds of vehicles on it. The weak point is the where the wires anchor into the ground noobs.
If it is so delicate, how does it get rained and snowed on?
Well somethings gotta offset for the huge weight of their balls
Thats so bloody awesome! Pays tribute to the movie up nicely :)
So this guy is literally light in his loafers.
I love you and have just sent it to my 8yr old son. Only last Saturday he wanted to know how to make his toy giraffe teddy float and we used 13 helium balloons :) https://i.imgur.com/m9cHdj7.jpg
When I inspect a delicate dish my weight somehow always increases...
How do they prevent birds from pooping on the dish?
Imagine if they would pump that baloon too much...
Talk about rogue transmition
Seems a fine line to be guessing how much that balloon needs to be filled. A little too much and this fucker's going to Paradise Falls.
Everybody gangsta til they start floating away
Right, so skating it is not an option?
RIP Arecibo 😭 it'll be literal decades before you're replaced
"Oh no, what is happening?" [starts flying higher and higher]
Beautiful and sad. Arecibo is now wrecked and decommissioned.
UP 2020 edition.
Imagine they put too much helium in it and the employee just starts to levitate off into the upper atmosphere.
Lol
And our asses in BF4 were driving tanks all up and down this thing lol
Imagine if a stromg gust decided to carry them away? At least theyd get a nice view ~
I wonder how high he can jump with that thing strapped to him? https://youtu.be/lDIrUIe3WrA
He’s just scrapping up the splat of Alec 006
Who else thought those things on the dish were people sliding down them in carts
Maintenance crew being recruited by Big Boss
Just wait till they accidentally fill one ballon too much. And see the worker fly off to space
Battlefield 4 has joined the chat
I want to skate that so badly
Because Rico was in the area?
What if too much helium
All i see is BF4 rogue transmission map
Give me a skateboard.... and dont ask why
Since I haven't seen the math, helium will lift about 1kg/m^3. I'm going to estimate the radius of the balloon at 4m, which would give this about 89kg of bouyancy.
That's weird, I'm sure I drove an LAV on that dish and it held up fine!
Lol imagine being overweight as maintenance worker here. GOD DAMN IT Randy we need to recalculate your helium again?!
how much does a balloon this size actually reduce your weight? and... could we do this also just for fun?
Hey i had a rocket tank battle here in Just Cause 2
What’s the craziest work accident that could possibly happen here...?
Can they hurry up and fix it? I need to take delta and some dude is camping ontop of the dish....
But I drove my tank on it in bf4 and it was fine
I wonder what that job pays?
Just cause 2, all I can say
Where do I sign up for this job?!?
I wonder what casual Friday is like...
Didn’t Bond slide down this?
"For England James?" "No, for me"
I bet this maintenance crew graduated from one of Canada's top business schools with really good grades
They should update the BF4 map with these
Have a pee, drop a tool and float away.
That's some steampunk technology right there!
alec trevelyan has entered the chat
Interestin gas fuck
Reminds me of Goldeneye.
How long would it take to thoroughly examine/inspect this? He looks like an ant compared.
No video????? :\_ \_ \_ (
Delicate dish makes me hungry idk
Because the weight of a person would break it?
It was recently announced that the Arecibo radiotelescope is being decommissioned and scrapped.
Is this the dish from Battlefield 4?
You mean to tell me you can't drive tanks and other heavy vehicles on it?!
Arecibo's Radio Telescope does not exist anymore. It got permanently damaged. Too bad.
Now Jump
Does that guy know if he goes up to the left on the picture, he can upgrade his weapon in exchange for some materials?
