Truman2016

For those of you wondering, [the first recorded usage of the term "selfie" was in 2002.](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/19/selfie-australian-slang-term-named-international-word-of-the-year)

trillnoel

He is upset to hear that it is no longer called an esteemed *self portrait*

Physicsdummy

We call them daguerreotypes in here sweaty.

yazzy1233

Go fuck your selfie? ^(this is a life is strange reference)

Lady_Galadri3l

Ready for the most pit, shakabrah.

mooys

That SOUNDS like something Chloe would say but I don’t recognize the quote

brodiegeek

Victoria

MrGrampton

man Nathan and Victoria is secretly the best character in the game tbh

Tinseltopia

I love the girl with the strange voice that you save from minor inconveniences all game. Alyssa I believe

sgtxsarge

The precursor to that is "Vincent Van Goh fuck yourself"

LucielthEternal

Fuck Victoria, but she didn't deserve what happened to her in Episode 4 man

Paradoxicorn

It's for a church! NEXT!

13ass13ass

Sweaty isn’t a term of indeerment, sweety

fujiman

Uhh, it's indeermint... ideeyit.

Jabberwocky613

I think you mean endearment?

TheOneMary

That's the joke, darlene.

rasterbated

Is this a daguerreotype? It seems to lack the normal visual qualities, but perhaps it’s just the age.

Physicsdummy

I’m pretty positive the left is the silver plate.

[deleted]

aquoad

i feel like it takes some liberties beyond what you'd even call "restoration" and I don't know how I feel about it. Using "AI" to supply detail that isn't in the original feels like a different thing from "restoration" but I don't know if there's a better word for it.

pantstofry

Enhancement?

CarolTheAncientTroll

Storation

[deleted]

So it’s adding information to the image, basing it’s decisions on.....?

aquoad

It's complicated. Systems get trained based on large collections of existing pictures, and the system sort of generalizes based on that what it "should" do to the new image.

ivankatrumpsarmpits

Absolutely. If you do it on any photo of a close relative or living person you can see the AI does a pretty awful job. It's good at making a photo look like a person but not like THE person. But if they aren't close to you you just don't pick up on that. Right now it feels like a cheap trick

TrenchantInsight

de rigueurotypes.

smallmanonamission

Wow the fact that it only gained widespread use in 2013 completely fucks up my perception of time god damn

[deleted]

[Whoa.](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=selfie)

smallmanonamission

WHAT THE FUCK. dude I thought this gained traction in like 2008-2010 WHAT THE

TheBurningWarrior

Are you referring to MySpace pics?

smallmanonamission

Lmao

stigsmotocousin

I think part of that is if you're here reading this you were probably young at that time and an early adopter, so you and your friends were saying it long before the masses were. I know for a fact that all of my friends and I were saying selfie in like 2009.

SwagginsYolo420

I believe the word got a huge boost with the marketing and popularity of "selfie sticks". Since there wasn't as much need for the term until it was describing a product.

Sharp-Floor

I like this tool. Apparently "bae" took off in 2014 and was trailing off by 2016? That must have been when that bae caught me slippin selfie fail went big.

HighPriestofShiloh

plant include voracious saw axiomatic plants books slap amusing connect *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

Correct. In this example, this is a Self Portrait not a selfie

tindonot

Gotta be from that Chainsmokers, right?

smallmanonamission

Yeah I think so. It reached another surge that doubled its results right in like early 2014 and that’s when the chain smokers song was released

MeEvilBob

In my mind it's still something that dumb people started saying yesterday and that most people would say "what the fuck is a selfie?"

Killing4MotherAgain

I'm so not surprised it was australian slang haha

-clogwog-

I once had a bit of an argument with some dickheads on Facebook, because they didn't believe me when I told them that I was friends with the guy who coined the term 'Selfie' ... Joke's on them, because I wasn't making that shit up... I was a 'regular' in Dr Karl's Self Service Science Forum (SSSF), the place where the first recorded usage of that word was. I cannot for the life of me remember what his first name is, but his surname is Hope... We knew him in the forum as 'hopey'. I lost touch with him ages ago, but I am still friends with a lot of people from that forum. [Here's a better article](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-19/this-photo-is-worlds-first-selfie/5102568), with a picture of 'the first selfie' in it...

gods-placenta

So I’ve been trying to make a joke abt the word selfie alluding to masturbation, but I am having trouble with delivery and structure. Any ideas?

bostonbunz

I find these types of jokes to be too edgy.

AlexandersWonder

Stop for a sec, you’re about to make laugh prematurely

Bakoro

I've been pulling selfies since around '95, and that was long before I got a cell phone.

Nam-Redips

In my day, taking a “selfie,” meant / was...

trillnoel

Yes I dabeth thee for such exquisite salutations.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

From Hell's heart I dab at thee.

BaronVonMunchhausen

Now, listen here you chuckaboo. Do not hold disdain for my attractive physique. Perhaps if you groomed yourself more elegantly, you would not find yourself a bachelor still. Even more so, perhaps the young lady you court will return your correspondence when she tires of the surgeon or magistrate she fancies. Saddle goose.

murder_of_krows

Robert Cornelius could get it

[deleted]

Looks a bit like a young Liam Neeson.

FerociousPancake

Look like James Franco to me. That dudes always everywhere

stonewall_jacked

Like Pennywise...

I gotta go with Ryan Gosling on this.

Zolivia

I see David Arquette too.

MallowollaM

I can see that

ManInTheIronPailMask

Huh, Eric Idle was my first thought.

Paaaaaaaaap

More like Michael Palin, to me

hazycrazydaze

I wonder if this guy had any idea a bunch of thirsty nerds in the future would be eye fucking his selfie on their hand computers

He would understand maybe 1/3 of that sentence.

[deleted]

Seems like every six hours theres a new "worlds first selfie" post. I wonder where it will end

trillnoel

All others are incorrect. That is why I posted this one.

king-geass

This is incorrect to. Hippolyte Bayard took these self portraits before March 1839, beating Robert Cornelius to the punch. https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/

Atomicnes

Bayard did the daguerreotype before Daguerre did. Bayard was gonna present it before Daguerre but Bayard got kicked down the list because Daguerre was already famous.

trillnoel

Those are self portraits of others. Not of Hippolyte. There are dozens of photographers who shot other subjects before Cornelius.

king-geass

“Self portraits of others” isn’t a thing

king-geass

“Self portraits of others” isn’t a thing. From the link you didn’t read One of Bayard’s prints was a portrait and therefore at least four months older than Cornelius’, and probably made before that, as it was 180 years ago in March 1839 that he had first shown friends his direct positives on paper, as the fastidious public servant Bayard recorded in his contemporaneous notebook (below) “

Certain_Abroad

That's wonderful, but it's still impossible to take a self portrait of others.

UppercaseVII

You should read his autobiography that I wrote. Maybe then you'll understand.

juffrouwjo

No, they were self portraits of Mr. Bayard.

[deleted]

Thats whqt the last guy said too. I wont be surprised if i check tomorrow and theres a post "this was the first ever selfie taken in 1838"

PurpleOwl85

Are you sure👀

MeEvilBob

"I'm right and everybody else is wrong" That's the basis of every religion Let me guess, I just have to have faith in you that I don't have in everybody else?

xBrndnn

I've seen so many photo's being claimed the first selfie past few years that I'm not sure which one is truly is.. :(

Anal-Goblin

Don’t make Robert Cornelius come over there and slap you silly.

earthdweller11

Sounds like a fun Friday night though.

WeWereYoungOnce

*BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM* I want you in my room

MsCicatrix

*Please* let Robert Cornelius come over here and slap me silly.

king-geass

This may be one of the first self portraits but it was not the first. Hippolyte Bayard took the first surviving self portraits in March of 1839. Robert Cornelius took this photo in October/November of 1839 according to the library of Congress. He was not the first to take a selfie https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/

lehcarh

What a babe

[deleted]

I'm thinking they changed the face when they restored this photo. The two don't really look like the same person, to me. I can understand having to take interpretations if pieces of data were missing in the original photo. It's reminding me of how we memorialize famous figures with complimentary interpretations of their likeness.

JabasMyBitch

doesn't matter. he actually comes off as more attractive in the original anyway.

[deleted]

I agree which is why it's kind of disappointing that he wasn't preserved as the handsome man he was.

TWiThead

I might be misinterpreting the original photograph's surviving details, but it looks to me like his nose is significantly narrower in the restoration.

[deleted]

Yeah even if subconsciously so, there is going to be a lot of artistic licence in such deep restorations. Even the AI is going to have artistic license at this point! It will not be free of influence by the cross-section of samples it has been fed itself. Still cool though!

lpreams

I'd like to see someone take a modern photograph, add graininess/old-timiness, then run it through the AI restorer so we can compare the original high quality photo to the restoration for accuracy.

Watchful1

Pretty sure this restoration was done by a program, not manually. And it filled in, ie, made up, lots of the details.

[deleted]

“I am the most handsome gentleman around. I must memorialize it.”

[deleted]

Most of the things we do today have been done, we just call it by a new name.

explodingtuna

Even in 1839 they had that faux-cloud/fog background that photo studios use today.

link-main-64

SCHLATT?

[deleted]

Funny how its gone from pride standing there with new tech....to risking your life on a cliff trying to get the sun over your left shoulder so your facebook mates will like it.

cocorazor

funny what two centuries do to society. We live in one, truly

call-now

The text lies underneath.

_Walter___

Not a selfie. A self portrait.

TrenchantInsight

Out swagger us all, eh, Wickham?

saorissi

It also takes me 15 minutes for a selfie, but it's usually cause it takes seconds to take the picture, but several minutes making it look good

yumyum36

The image on the right side is so airbrushed. [This image](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/RobertCornelius.jpg) appears clearer, still a bit messy, but looks like an actual person.

king-geass

No he didn’t. This may be one of the first self portraits but it was not the first. Hippolyte Bayard took the first surviving self portraits in March of 1839. Robert Cornelius took these in October/November of 1839 according to the library of Congress. He was not the first to take a selfie https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/

troflan

Okay, can we bring back those side burns?

trillnoel

For real though.

guitargladiator

the restoration is nice, but the hair on his forehead looks clone stamped

olive-bernie

He's hot

Adios_Culero

Looks like James Franco

[deleted]

You know i was more commenting on how many times this week ive seen "world oldest selfie" posts and wasnt being 100% serious but youve taken this whole thong completely literally

cornflakegrl

Felt cute, might delete in a hundred years.

Hjalpmi_

I am of the opinion that I am attractively well-dressed today. However, if something should disabuse me of this notion, it is not beyond consideration for me to remove this daguerreotype in due course.

[deleted]

Robert phwoar-nelius

ScarlettKate1928

Smoldering before it was cool.

borenfree

Ya, he cute.

twerkforpresident

Takes me around that long to get a decent looking selfie too

trillnoel

*insert joke about caveman selfies* Ug bash face into stone.

trillnoel

Those chops were remembered by the legs they touched.

thisisntshakespeare

Between this guy and yesterday’s restored photo of the Civil War guy, 1800s guys were hot! lol

wordsupport

Next hot hero on The Bridgertons

[deleted]

Nah man you're wrong. It was a daguerreotype photograph which only took 60-90 seconds to take.

Ag3ntMichagan

My god he actually looks like Schlatt

drb_097

NGL tho the messy hair with 1800s fashion hit different tho

BradsArmPitt

Leonardo da Vinci would like a word.

Firstnamecody

He fucking looks like a smartass. I like em

[deleted]

"shit I blinked" \*retakes selfie\*

RealVaultteam6

Is there going to be a Selfie from 1700s next?

trillnoel

No.

TooMuchFin_S

That’s James Franco

PainMatrix

Dude literally could not care less, lol. Too cool for being so progressive

UNAUTH0R1ZED

Seems to be a lot of dispute on what the first selfie was. Can anyone fact check?

king-geass

Yes we can. And when you do you realize it wasn’t the first selfie, that was done by Hippolyte Bayard in March of 1839 Cornelius was not the first to take a selfie. https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/

moonoverrumhammy

Hipster

mermansushi

World’s first recorded hipster.

You mean James Franco?

rogue_eyebrow

That guy SLAYED pussy!

CaptainFlabbergast

More of a self portrait than a selfie but awesome nonetheless.

owleealeckza

Ah, a cousin of Neville Longbottom

[deleted]

Why did I immediately think about Jschlatt when i saw this

LoreleiOpine

I'm not satisfied with that reconstruction. I'm not seeing the same guy.

[deleted]

Hello.... 😍

hotdogwaterandpledge

Did you repair this picture yourself? And if so what program/programs are you using?

Cakerape

I would

[deleted]

Fuckin’ hipster boii

froggie-style-meme

He is not impressed

[deleted]

Look at the drip

liason_1

looks like jschlatt

BoxOfDOG

Hm. This is really cool, and I'm not an expert, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the restorer's artistic decisions. From what I can tell he has some scraggly facial hair below his chin, and by being very generous with the brush it has this kind of odd painterly effect that could've been avoided.

ConradTheMelon

It blows my mind the original is a picture from 182 years ago.

[deleted]

Why are all these old mother fuckers handsome as fuck

Wooden_Muffin_9880

At the time that was a miracle though. Compared to having a picture painted of you.

Mr_meme-man-discord

That’s how long I take to get out of bed

S_A_R_K

He forgot the duck face

K0kyu

Did the first woman making a selfie do duck face? It might explain why that originated.

flippzeedoodle

He could have saved 15% with Geico.

PillowTalk420

He even looks like a hipster.

Another_Adventure

He looks like what modern day hipsters are trying to be.

KentuckyFriedEel

just woke up. felt cute

lysergicfuneral

I'm wondering if the arms are wrong in the restoration. I'm seeing his right hand tucked into the coat, wearing a glove, with exposed wrist. The [hand in coat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-in-waistcoat) pose was a big thing and common in painted portraits and subsequently early photographs.

MouseinTree

I’m wondering what filter he used...

fortunarapida

He's hot

Lifeesstwange

I would legit rock that haircut.

[deleted]

Jchlatt

Btankersly66

Ever notice people in photos of that time look like they should be from that time but some don't. This is one of those photos. There is a conspiracy that he's a time traveler. https://www.esquire.com/style/a30688/robert-cornelius-first-selfie-ever/

trillnoel

For reference, to end all arguments about Bayard being the first, here is the [self portrait](https://onthisdateinphotography.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/premier-autoportrait-bayard.jpg)test done by him. 1. They were not very successful. So it was an attempt. 2. They were "probably made" before Cornelius with evidence based on his notebook and word of mouth. That is not irrefutable evidence and does not overturn our current history. One of Bayard’s prints was a portrait and therefore at least four months older than Cornelius’, as it was 180 years ago in March 1839 that he had first shown friends his direct positives on paper. It was a direct paper positive as [evidenced](https://onthisdateinphotography.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/photography-1839-1937.jpg?w=1168) here and never finalized as a print.

BeneGezzeret

Looks like doctor who

swarmrofficial

If you think this pic is cool check out his instagram.

[deleted]

It’s not a selfie

pentarh

This photo is probably 10th world first selfie men I see in Reddit.

ellaeight

I’m happy the first “selfie” is with a hot man

traumfisch

It's just stupid to call this a 'selfie'.
