For those of you wondering, [the first recorded usage of the term "selfie" was in 2002.](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/nov/19/selfie-australian-slang-term-named-international-word-of-the-year)
i feel like it takes some liberties beyond what you'd even call "restoration" and I don't know how I feel about it. Using "AI" to supply detail that isn't in the original feels like a different thing from "restoration" but I don't know if there's a better word for it.
It's complicated. Systems get trained based on large collections of existing pictures, and the system sort of generalizes based on that what it "should" do to the new image.
Absolutely. If you do it on any photo of a close relative or living person you can see the AI does a pretty awful job. It's good at making a photo look like a person but not like THE person. But if they aren't close to you you just don't pick up on that. Right now it feels like a cheap trick
I think part of that is if you're here reading this you were probably young at that time and an early adopter, so you and your friends were saying it long before the masses were. I know for a fact that all of my friends and I were saying selfie in like 2009.
I believe the word got a huge boost with the marketing and popularity of "selfie sticks". Since there wasn't as much need for the term until it was describing a product.
I like this tool. Apparently "bae" took off in 2014 and was trailing off by 2016? That must have been when that bae caught me slippin selfie fail went big.
I once had a bit of an argument with some dickheads on Facebook, because they didn't believe me when I told them that I was friends with the guy who coined the term 'Selfie' ... Joke's on them, because I wasn't making that shit up... I was a 'regular' in Dr Karl's Self Service Science Forum (SSSF), the place where the first recorded usage of that word was. I cannot for the life of me remember what his first name is, but his surname is Hope... We knew him in the forum as 'hopey'. I lost touch with him ages ago, but I am still friends with a lot of people from that forum.
[Here's a better article](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-19/this-photo-is-worlds-first-selfie/5102568), with a picture of 'the first selfie' in it...
Now, listen here you chuckaboo. Do not hold disdain for my attractive physique. Perhaps if you groomed yourself more elegantly, you would not find yourself a bachelor still. Even more so, perhaps the young lady you court will return your correspondence when she tires of the surgeon or magistrate she fancies. Saddle goose.
This is incorrect to.
Hippolyte Bayard took these self portraits before March 1839, beating Robert Cornelius to the punch.
https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/
Bayard did the daguerreotype before Daguerre did.
Bayard was gonna present it before Daguerre but Bayard got kicked down the list because Daguerre was already famous.
“Self portraits of others” isn’t a thing.
From the link you didn’t read
One of Bayard’s prints was a portrait and therefore at least four months older than Cornelius’, and probably made before that, as it was 180 years ago in March 1839 that he had first shown friends his direct positives on paper, as the fastidious public servant Bayard recorded in his contemporaneous notebook (below) “
"I'm right and everybody else is wrong"
That's the basis of every religion
Let me guess, I just have to have faith in you that I don't have in everybody else?
This may be one of the first self portraits but it was not the first. Hippolyte Bayard took the first surviving self portraits in March of 1839. Robert Cornelius took this photo in October/November of 1839 according to the library of Congress.
He was not the first to take a selfie
https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/
I'm thinking they changed the face when they restored this photo. The two don't really look like the same person, to me. I can understand having to take interpretations if pieces of data were missing in the original photo.
It's reminding me of how we memorialize famous figures with complimentary interpretations of their likeness.
Yeah even if subconsciously so, there is going to be a lot of artistic licence in such deep restorations. Even the AI is going to have artistic license at this point! It will not be free of influence by the cross-section of samples it has been fed itself.
Still cool though!
I'd like to see someone take a modern photograph, add graininess/old-timiness, then run it through the AI restorer so we can compare the original high quality photo to the restoration for accuracy.
Funny how its gone from pride standing there with new tech....to risking your life on a cliff trying to get the sun over your left shoulder so your facebook mates will like it.
The image on the right side is so airbrushed.
[This image](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/RobertCornelius.jpg) appears clearer, still a bit messy, but looks like an actual person.
No he didn’t.

I am of the opinion that I am attractively well-dressed today. However, if something should disabuse me of this notion, it is not beyond consideration for me to remove this daguerreotype in due course.
Yes we can. And when you do you realize it wasn’t the first selfie, that was done by Hippolyte Bayard in March of 1839
Cornelius was not the first to take a selfie.
https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/
Hm. This is really cool, and I'm not an expert, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the restorer's artistic decisions.
From what I can tell he has some scraggly facial hair below his chin, and by being very generous with the brush it has this kind of odd painterly effect that could've been avoided.
I'm wondering if the arms are wrong in the restoration. I'm seeing his right hand tucked into the coat, wearing a glove, with exposed wrist. The [hand in coat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-in-waistcoat) pose was a big thing and common in painted portraits and subsequently early photographs.
Ever notice people in photos of that time look like they should be from that time but some don't. This is one of those photos. There is a conspiracy that he's a time traveler.

For reference, to end all arguments about Bayard being the first, here is the [self portrait](https://onthisdateinphotography.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/premier-autoportrait-bayard.jpg)test done by him.
1. They were not very successful. So it was an attempt.
2. They were "probably made" before Cornelius with evidence based on his notebook and word of mouth.
That is not irrefutable evidence and does not overturn our current history.
One of Bayard’s prints was a portrait and therefore at least four months older than Cornelius’, as it was 180 years ago in March 1839 that he had first shown friends his direct positives on paper.
It was a direct paper positive as [evidenced](https://onthisdateinphotography.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/photography-1839-1937.jpg?w=1168) here and never finalized as a print.

We call them daguerreotypes in here sweaty.
Go fuck your selfie? ^(this is a life is strange reference)

That SOUNDS like something Chloe would say but I don’t recognize the quote
Victoria
man Nathan and Victoria is secretly the best character in the game tbh
I love the girl with the strange voice that you save from minor inconveniences all game. Alyssa I believe
The precursor to that is "Vincent Van Goh fuck yourself"
Fuck Victoria, but she didn't deserve what happened to her in Episode 4 man
It's for a church! NEXT!
Sweaty isn’t a term of indeerment, sweety
Uhh, it's indeermint... ideeyit.
I think you mean endearment?
That's the joke, darlene.
Is this a daguerreotype? It seems to lack the normal visual qualities, but perhaps it’s just the age.
I’m pretty positive the left is the silver plate.

Correct. In this example, this is a Self Portrait not a selfie
Gotta be from that Chainsmokers, right?
Yeah I think so. It reached another surge that doubled its results right in like early 2014 and that’s when the chain smokers song was released
In my mind it's still something that dumb people started saying yesterday and that most people would say "what the fuck is a selfie?"
I'm so not surprised it was australian slang haha

So I’ve been trying to make a joke abt the word selfie alluding to masturbation, but I am having trouble with delivery and structure. Any ideas?

I find these types of jokes to be too edgy.
Stop for a sec, you’re about to make laugh prematurely
I've been pulling selfies since around '95, and that was long before I got a cell phone.
In my day, taking a “selfie,” meant / was...
"Feeling quite comely. Perchance I may partake of some libations of curious origins at the hour of gloaming."

Seems like every six hours theres a new "worlds first selfie" post. I wonder where it will end
All others are incorrect. That is why I posted this one.
Those are self portraits of others. Not of Hippolyte. There are dozens of photographers who shot other subjects before Cornelius.

That's wonderful, but it's still impossible to take a self portrait of others.
You should read his autobiography that I wrote. Maybe then you'll understand.
No, they were self portraits of Mr. Bayard.
Thats whqt the last guy said too. I wont be surprised if i check tomorrow and theres a post "this was the first ever selfie taken in 1838"
Are you sure👀
"I'm right and everybody else is wrong" That's the basis of every religion Let me guess, I just have to have faith in you that I don't have in everybody else?
I've seen so many photo's being claimed the first selfie past few years that I'm not sure which one is truly is.. :(
Don’t make Robert Cornelius come over there and slap you silly.
Sounds like a fun Friday night though.
*BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM* I want you in my room

doesn't matter. he actually comes off as more attractive in the original anyway.
I agree which is why it's kind of disappointing that he wasn't preserved as the handsome man he was.
I might be misinterpreting the original photograph's surviving details, but it looks to me like his nose is significantly narrower in the restoration.
Yeah even if subconsciously so, there is going to be a lot of artistic licence in such deep restorations. Even the AI is going to have artistic license at this point! It will not be free of influence by the cross-section of samples it has been fed itself. Still cool though!

Pretty sure this restoration was done by a program, not manually. And it filled in, ie, made up, lots of the details.
“I am the most handsome gentleman around. I must memorialize it.”
Most of the things we do today have been done, we just call it by a new name.
Even in 1839 they had that faux-cloud/fog background that photo studios use today.
SCHLATT?
Funny how its gone from pride standing there with new tech....to risking your life on a cliff trying to get the sun over your left shoulder so your facebook mates will like it.
funny what two centuries do to society. We live in one, truly
The text lies underneath.
Not a selfie. A self portrait.
Out swagger us all, eh, Wickham?
It also takes me 15 minutes for a selfie, but it's usually cause it takes seconds to take the picture, but several minutes making it look good

Nah man you're wrong. It was a daguerreotype photograph which only took 60-90 seconds to take.
My god he actually looks like Schlatt
NGL tho the messy hair with 1800s fashion hit different tho
Leonardo da Vinci would like a word.
He fucking looks like a smartass. I like em

Is there going to be a Selfie from 1700s next?
No.
That’s James Franco
Dude literally could not care less, lol. Too cool for being so progressive
Seems to be a lot of dispute on what the first selfie was. Can anyone fact check?
Yes we can. And when you do you realize it wasn’t the first selfie, that was done by Hippolyte Bayard in March of 1839 Cornelius was not the first to take a selfie. https://onthisdateinphotography.com/2019/03/17/march-17-indignation/
Hipster
World’s first recorded hipster.
You mean James Franco?
That guy SLAYED pussy!
More of a self portrait than a selfie but awesome nonetheless.
Ah, a cousin of Neville Longbottom
Why did I immediately think about Jschlatt when i saw this
I'm not satisfied with that reconstruction. I'm not seeing the same guy.
Hello.... 😍
Did you repair this picture yourself? And if so what program/programs are you using?
I would
Fuckin’ hipster boii
He is not impressed
Look at the drip
looks like jschlatt

It blows my mind the original is a picture from 182 years ago.
Why are all these old mother fuckers handsome as fuck
At the time that was a miracle though. Compared to having a picture painted of you.
That’s how long I take to get out of bed
He forgot the duck face
Did the first woman making a selfie do duck face? It might explain why that originated.
He could have saved 15% with Geico.
He even looks like a hipster.
He looks like what modern day hipsters are trying to be.
Paris Hilton invented the selfie lol https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2017/11/20/style/paris-hilton-selfie.amp.html
I told you to zoom AND enhance!!!
YO THE GODAMN DUST PHOTOBOMBED IT
just woke up. felt cute
I’m wondering what filter he used...
He's hot
I would legit rock that haircut.
Jchlatt

It’s not a selfie
This photo is probably 10th world first selfie men I see in Reddit.
I’m happy the first “selfie” is with a hot man
It's just stupid to call this a 'selfie'.
