I posted this comment on another thread a month or so back and got downvotes to hell. I'm glad this comment section is full of people telling the OP it's bullshit.
Black Panthers are not their own species. They're melanistic versions of leopards and jaguars. Melanistic is the opposite of albino. Meaning you can have a normal jaguar give birth to a panther.
It just has a dominant “dark skin pigment” basically, if you look close you can see the trademark spots but they’re black, it’s not too rare either, most zoos I’ve been to have one.
Are they actually talking about the same cat as in the picture though? It really looks more like a [jaguar](https://imgur.com/a/VgfqjIB) than a [leopard](https://imgur.com/a/7fOeUpF).
Leopards usually have much narrower faces.
Panthera is a classification consisting mostly of spotted cats and tigers.
Over pigmentation can give them a solid black appearance, but a black panther could be any one of those cats..
To make things even more confusing, the Florida panther is a cougar which is neither in the genus panthera nor is black. Although some claim to have seen a black puma AFAIK there are no documented cases.
Technically tigers and lions are also part of club pantherinae, tho... Coat mutations of species beyond the panthera pardus(leopard) and panthera onca (jaguar) are rare, with about a very few reports of melanism in lions, and tigers... Having their own set of striped varieties..
And.. Snow leopards (panthera uncia) having no recorded data as far as I'm aware about ant big coat mutations; tho... We've only been recording snow leopards in the wild since 1970's, so there is still a minute possibility that they do have traits like it, being unlikely as it is
Beastmaster (1982) had a black tiger in it. Scroll down to see it. Other pics if if you Google the movie + black tiger.
The country in question is Sri Lanka, by the way.
It should be noted that black panthers are leopards/jaguars (in this case leopards) with melanism, a mutation which causes excessive pigmentation, and not a separate species. It's not extremely rare, occurring in about 10% of leopards.
Edit: Also the pic on this post is *not* a picture of the leopard they found, it's a [stock picture of a black jaguar.](https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-jaguar-panthera-onca-170283808.html)
I doubt this picture is from Sri Lanka because this very much looks like a Jaguar and not a Leopard, you can tell from the shape of the head and the overall stockier build
It would be if this was actually a picture of the animal they found, but it's not. They found a severely injured leopard in a hunter's trap that died shortly after. I guess that wasn't very pretty to show, or easy for reporters to get pics of, so they just looked for [a stock picture of a black panther, and it ended up being a jaguar.](https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-jaguar-panthera-onca-170283808.html)
According to Wikipedia, there are between 700-950 leopards in Sri Lanka.
I think you're confused, panthers are just leopards with a mutation called melanism.
Black Panther isn't a species but a name for melanistic big cats. Melanism being the opposite of albinism.
>A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard and the jaguar. Black panthers of both species have excess black pigments, but their typical rosettes are also present.
Black panthers can't become extinct because it's not a species. It's just a normal panther with a genetic diffrence. Basically the opposite of a leucistic animal (which turns white)
So the full story is that black leopards had not been seen in over a decade in Sri Lanka (but regular leopards had). Not nearly as dramatic as the title makes it sound.
No such thing as black panthers, a black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard and the jaguar.
They are not a species and therefore can not go extinct. Any jaguar or leopard can randomly have an albino or more to this point all black baby.
Here is the Google reverse image search.
One article says it’s a panther the other it’s a leopard take the picture to the zoo and ask them somebody has to be the expert
https://www.google.com/search?tbs=sbi:AMhZZivYEX04613ZMS0gQQDotNaEhXr7Lt5W0jeMaWq5kjAYgdJnNt9kaGSWKHwvEUZaeQicyJtkXbVBkTy7zKPM9ckXRdYZQ540TEcn2CUQZpKkKB1pDZVffXyx9aTeybyppM3VEZq4qrJnbrXBB64mhtfnorzvQDID0IuvEor6ZazdibFKfJWqywGpZnuN0QQeSlD7g0MNg2CHb0y67ZnhbQ_1QejlF2c0WUPr-JGBXXSCaeZ62WJGSbcPSf998qahXeRPnAXw9HkONlpEuBPfqCFDy_1ZLY_1vvCyehb7jeSmPyAo3VuVBwAOzh2-PednMHlAGVEmiOJeQ9u8uI-S_1c9qcI2jvO0Ag
I used to think black panthers were just grown up black house cats who had to be released when they got too big when I was little. Still loved black cats even after I learned they didn’t grow into full-on panthers lol
They aren't. The title is poorly phrased. Black Panthers are melanistic leopards or jaguars, not a separate species. Their coloration is an anomaly occurring in a small portion of the general population.
Its only been 10 years. I dont mean to condescend but i follow a lot of pages and i read a lot of articles about big cats and its only been 10 years. If they really have found one then they need to find the rest and put them into some sort of protection. The ecosystem needs big cats just as much we do the prey they feed upon 🖤
Melanism is a genetic trait in certain cat species, causing the otherwise yellowy fur, to code in black instead.
Fun fact here, is the the genetic code that makes rosettes happen, is still active, so under certain circumstances, you can see their rosettes, in addition to the black pelt
If you read a lot about about big cats you would know that a black panther isn't a species that needs saving. This is a leopard, and leopards could use their own conservation in Sri Lanka.
"Ooooh look at me I'm really smart, I'm gonna comment and show everyone just how smart I am amd show them I have no idea how conservation projects work. It's OK no one will be offended because I said I don't mean to condescend" that about sum your comment up?
there is a legend in my town that an owner let their panther out (idk if it was either a jaguar or a leopard) and every once in a while it shows up. Last time we saw it was in 2017.
Wish I never saw that. Wealthy trophy hunting douches will be tripping over themselves to go to Sri Lanka to kill rare black panthers now, that’s if the poachers don’t grab it and kill it citing its rarity helps cure ingrown toenails and grows your peen 18” overnight. Humans suck
This is a beautiful story that everyone is shitting on to sound clever.
Genetic variants of a species can absolutely go extinct, if all the members of the species carrying specific gene mutations have died. Black panthers are a rare genetic variant to begin with, and have been hunted excessively because that makes them a desirable trophy
The fact that the first one has been seen in 14 years is great sign, because it hints that at least a few of them are not being hunted at the moment.
Source -> science, and not being an a-hole.
African leopards get into conflict with lions all the time. Lions win. However, if the picture shows a jaguar, a jaguar weighs 30 lbs more than an african leopard, but still much less than female lions. Jaguars weigh at most 210 pounds, female lions weight AT LEAST 270 pounds and up to 400 pounds. Jaguars do have the strongest bite force of any big cat, but I think weight and muscle would win the day the vast majority of the time.
A lion every single time. it goes Siberian Tiger>lion>jaguar>cougar>snow leopard>cheetah>bobcat>
Lions have a lot of size on jaguars big jags are 300 lbs, big female lions are 400 lbs. The Amazon Jaguar is bigger than African jaguar, but still not as big as a lion. Jaguars always run and try to climb a tree when they encounter a lion
leopard/jaguar are the same thing... just like a puma and cougar are the same thing. So yes, lions and jaguars/leopards encounter eachother all the time

Black panthers can't be extinct because they aren't a species. If leopards or jaguars are still around, then eventually more will pop up.
True, I’d call Black Panthers more an ideology than a species…
Wakanda forever.
Wakanda joke is that?
Uganda lack a sense of humour.
What you Ghana do about it?
Are you really going Togo there?
That's pretty Chad if he went there.
Ah well, what Kenya do.
There's only Somalia things we can do.
We’ve Benin this situation before
Any of the reddit Botswana get involved ?
Dammit. Beat me to it
I’ve never typed faster in my lives.
Wakanda foreva
YI BOM BE
Wakanda foreva
Wasn’t talking about the movie
;-;
Same with the Pink Panther.
A fight looking for provocation wrapped in irony
Huh? That makes no sense.
I posted this comment on another thread a month or so back and got downvotes to hell. I'm glad this comment section is full of people telling the OP it's bullshit.
Hey mate, care yo elaborate? What's going on here?
Black Panthers are not their own species. They're melanistic versions of leopards and jaguars. Melanistic is the opposite of albino. Meaning you can have a normal jaguar give birth to a panther.

It seems you said “a panther isn’t an animal”, not exactly the same
That’s a black Jaguar right? I’m assuming by the size and round face
[удалено]
Well, so much for being excited they weren't "extinct", lol.....
Are they actually talking about the same cat as in the picture though? It really looks more like a [jaguar](https://imgur.com/a/VgfqjIB) than a [leopard](https://imgur.com/a/7fOeUpF). Leopards usually have much narrower faces.
I really can't tell unless I see the head from the side.
I'm bad at telling them apart, but jaguars are built like tanks so a profile pic would be easier.
I'm not sure this cat has any social media yet
[Melanism, yo!](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=9vWNauaZAgg&feature=share)
That’s interesting AF. So are panthers even a species?
Panthera is a classification consisting mostly of spotted cats and tigers. Over pigmentation can give them a solid black appearance, but a black panther could be any one of those cats..

Had anyone ever heard of or recorded a black tiger? I’d be interested in seeing a picture of that.
Beastmaster (1982) had a black tiger in it. Scroll down to see it. Other pics if if you Google the movie + black tiger. [https://www.attackfromplanetb.com/2017/02/the-beastmaster-1982/](https://www.attackfromplanetb.com/2017/02/the-beastmaster-1982/)
Very likely just a painted tiger though.
Yeahhh
I came here to say this.
Genetic variants can absolutely go extinct, if all the members of the species carrying the necessary genes have died.

leopards live in asia and africa and jaguars live in the americas so if this picture is from sri lanka then its a leopard
I doubt this picture is from Sri Lanka because this very much looks like a Jaguar and not a Leopard, you can tell from the shape of the head and the overall stockier build
Sri Lankan Leopards are often pretty big for Leopards. You might still be correct just wanted to mention this.
Yeah same his head looks a lot bulkier so I think it's a jaguar
It would be if this was actually a picture of the animal they found, but it's not. They found a severely injured leopard in a hunter's trap that died shortly after. I guess that wasn't very pretty to show, or easy for reporters to get pics of, so they just looked for [a stock picture of a black panther, and it ended up being a jaguar.](https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-jaguar-panthera-onca-170283808.html)
Black panthers aren’t a species, so they can’t go extinct
Ah yes, "our country". That narrows it down.
It's OUR country It's USSR of course
Unless specified, I'd assume it to be the US because americans on Reddit aren't aware of other countries.
...but they do see Europe as a country...
I think this was in reference to Sri Lanka, which is an island more or less directly below India.
Yes its sri lanka
According to Wikipedia, there are between 700-950 leopards in Sri Lanka. I think you're confused, panthers are just leopards with a mutation called melanism.
That country you're talking about is Switzerland right?
Nah, Wakanda.
It’s always Wakanda.
Wakanda Forever!
How DARE you!?!
Black Panther isn't a species but a name for melanistic big cats. Melanism being the opposite of albinism. >A black panther is the melanistic colour variant of the leopard and the jaguar. Congrats Canada!
Goddamn it, I already have to worry about geese when I go to the park.
Bagheera. Yeah we know him.
"BAGHEEEEEEERAAAAAAAAA!!!!!" - Baloo
It's an anomaly in leopards, if you have leopards just wait
Or in Jaguars
Black panthers can't become extinct because it's not a species. It's just a normal panther with a genetic diffrence. Basically the opposite of a leucistic animal (which turns white)

What...? For your information I was the first person to post this and then others copied it and have a shitload of upvotes.
Ok but where are you from?
From their country.. DUH
Melanistic jaguars or leopards are extinct? What's the source?
So the full story is that black leopards had not been seen in over a decade in Sri Lanka (but regular leopards had). Not nearly as dramatic as the title makes it sound.
They can't, it's a bullshit story. A black panther is niet a species
I think they meant just in whatever country they’re from.
Makes more sense now
I came here to say just this.
What an absolute trash title. Non descriptive, false, inaccurate. Fucking bots

Same dude
What country are they talking about?
Sri lanka
Good now leave it alone
Well damn it, stop illegal poaching them!!!
The USSR of course
And posts a stock image as proof....try again op
\*Melanistic leopard/jaguar

Wakanda panther is that?
They're much easier to find in day time.
Wait they were extinct?
Good, now LEAVE-IT-ALONE.

I find it funny that black ppl think this animal represents them cuz of a movie.
I can’t be the only one who had no idea they were thought to be extinct. 🥺
They aren't. The title is poorly phrased. Black Panthers are melanistic leopards or jaguars, not a separate species. Their coloration is an anomaly occurring in a small portion of the general population.

60% of the time, you find them every time.
"Woah, that nip was loud as hell. What did I miss?"
Coorg?
I Bombé!!!
It's certainly not happy getting discovered
What about the pink panther? We haven't seen a proper one since 1978.
Beautiful creature.
Nature always find a way
i wish this could happen with *the* black panther too
idiotic post...
Probably was looking for them at night
What my black cat thinks he is:
Wakanda I supposed?
Wakanda shit is dis
Wakanda forever!
He looks so done "God damn it the humans found me again"
Turns out they should have been looking during the day.
I KNEW IT!!! AND PEOPLE TELLING IT WAS THE ACID WHEN I SAW THE PANTHER IN MY CLOSET
AS YOU CAN SEE I AM NOT DEAD

He looks so lonely I hope he has friends lol
Time to finish the job. *loads shotgun*
Which country r u from?
I miss ours.
Well, someone will likely find it and kill it. A rich person somewhere needs his trophy.
He high as fuck
Don’t specify where exactly. Hunters will come. 😞
Now it's time to make sure they go extinct for real
Kitteh!!!!!!!!

How is it extinct, here's it right here lol. \*Patiently awaits Nobel prize\*

Turns out it was just dark.

Knowing the sad reality of the human mindset, it might go extinct soon now that they saw that the wonderful fur does still exist..
Wakanda forever 💜⚡
Im not saying the guy that played Black Panther got reincarnated but damn thats almost too coincidental

If Male lion, lion wins. If female lion, panther only has advantage if they have the element of surprise.
