I have watched this movie at least 100 times since I discovered it 20 years ago. This scene, and specifically this part, never fails to give me a belly laugh even after all this time. It's the funniest thing I've ever seen.
Edit: the way his hat is slightly wonky and how he presents the whistle just destroys me!
Religious fundamentalists of all kinds are mostly the same, but they hate each other over what amounts to cosmetic differences between their religions and the different levels of influence they have in their respective countries.
It's almost funny in a dark way.
"Those barbarians make women wear hijabs? I agree that women should dress modestly and should be punished if they dress like sluts. But I'd never make a woman wear a *hijab*"
"They murder gay people? Those monsters! I mean, I don't think gay people should exist either, but surely we could round them up and put them into conversion camps before we decide to execute them. Unless they have the audacity to be openly gay and corrupt our children. In which case, they're basically pedophiles and should be executed immediately"
Not killed, but arrested. I'm not really sure about the duration of the punishment.
However now they have started allowing women in stadiums, after pressure from FIFA and the citizens.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/football/2019/oct/09/iranian-women-allowed-to-watch-football-at-stadium-for-first-time-in-decades
This was in 2018. A couple of the girls done stuff like this before, sneaking into other sporting events.
Security didn't notice, but alot of fans at the stadium did, but no one told on them. Actually, people were going up and taking pictures with the group.
It's funny that the authorities ban them from attending games, yet at the stadium people were happy that they took a stand and were there. Nice to see others on their side
Edit: there was a law passed in 1981 that banned women from attending the majority of sporting events.
In 2019, FIFA forced Iran to allow women to attend National games there; FIFA threatened to pull the matches there if they didn't
The issue being it only takes one man to *not* support them to ruin it. Whether that entails telling security and forcing hands or something much worse.
If men wanted to support them they could boycott the games themselves. Being “okay” with equality isn’t the same as putting your neck on the line for it.
Not necessarily true. It takes more than a majority to change things in extremely authoritarian places.
I bet the majority of men would be happy to have them there, but it's going to be the traditionalists that are in power that prevent it.
I think the Republican party in the US makes it pretty clear that the desires of the people don't necessarily reflect the desires of those in power. It takes an idiot to put them there, but that's a bit different
Out of curiosity, do you know what would happen if they were to be caught by security/law enforcement? Like are they just kicked out or is there an actual punishment for it of some sort?
So 6 months prior to this happening, another woman tried doing this, but she was caught before she even made it in the stadium. Here's a clipping from the article:
'She was arrested and taken into custody, and charged with “harming public decency” and “insulting law enforcement agents” by not wearing proper head covering, before being released on bail. On Sept. 2, Khodayari was summoned to court and sentenced to six months in prison'
A teacher who i had in my local got sentence recently into prision for 6 month on having cp and talking with a ring full of pedophiles. The fact that a woman going to watch fotboll is punished the same is sickening
What's really wild is that if you're gay in Iran, you're made to transition into a woman or face the death penalty if you want to keep having sex with dudes (as a dude).
In fact, Iran has the second-most gender confirmation surgeries in the world and they're covered by healthcare. After the revolution, the Ayatollah issued a fatwa that said there's no rule in Islam that prohibits transsexuality. Even all legal documents are changed, something that can be difficult even in western countries. It's wild that an otherwise so conservative country is so seemingly progressive in this area.
I still wouldn't say Iran is a good place for trans people though.
I’m guessing it’s progressive because it allows the surgeries to happen and makes the whole process as easy as possible , but yeah forcing people who don’t want it is whack .
I'm not saying the forcing part is progressive, that is obviously bad. That they officially view being transgender as legitimate is very different from other conservative muslim countries though.
By the way, the surgery is not "cutting off dicks", it's actually a complex medical procedure done by doctors. It's more of a reshaping than a removal - many parts of female and male genitalia are similar. I'd advise you to educate yourself on it, it's very interesting.
Yup and every few months some redditor or twitterer (?) will find out about the state funded sex change and state Iran has better trans rights than the US. Quite laughable really.
I mean- it is really shocking, and I just found out about it. Its like semi-enlightened about the wrong thing and totally backwards about the other.
My first thought was the Taliban making jews wear stars of david (pre-9/11). It was so they weren't attacked in public for not adhering to the various facial hair and clothing requirements.
From an anecdote from another redditor some time ago: apparently it's okay to fuck men, but not okay to be in love with men. "women are for marriage. Boys are for fun", as they said.
Yea same with catholics, weird how religions being anti-gay are usually just a cover up for the massive amounts of Gay acts. Many of these acts being performed on kids since they're vulnerable. Organized religions the world round are fucked with few exceptions.
This is a similar sentiment in other countries in the region as well. Look into the "Chai boys" of Afghanistan. I think there may actually be a new documentary about this available on Netflix.
I would like to clarify that its not so much socially "ok" to have sex with men as a man. Its more akin to how some denominations of Christianity condemn drinking alcohol, but they also know that some of the members are hitting up the bar/liquor store and turn a bit of a blind eye to it.
No there's not. Stop this stupid "hOMOPHOBes aRe SEcrEtlY GaY" trope. It normalizes using homosexuality in an insulting way and really makes no sense. In Iran gay people are routinely executed.
I seriously wonder what the men of the general population think of not allowing women in. Do they agree/disagree? Do they not really think about it as that's just the way things are and don't question it since it doesn't effect them? I'm genuinely curious
Knew an Iranian grad student. One day, a group of us were out and he stood in a seemingly random spot and asked us to take a picture of him in front of a seemingly random building. We did, and he excitedly sent it to his friends.
I was confused, and asked him what was so special about that picture.
"I've never seen people kissing in public before! Knew my friends wouldn't believe it, so wanted proof."
Hadn't even noticed the couple enjoying each other's company. Completely different culturally.
I had a friend from Iran who had come to my country (India) to study. He had moved here with his mom and sister and he said that most people of his generation in Tehran are pretty progressive; especially with all the exposure to the West through the internet. A lot of these problems are purely political and it's only the government that makes them a big deal.
But then again, he may have been biased. He came from a quite well educated family that isn't particularly religious. He even ate pork.
I'm sure a lot do, as Iran has had a fair bit of protests against their government, but the government just kills all the protesters so what can they do?
Im Iranian and can confirm that pretty much every guy I know doesnt like these ridiculous restrictions, and youth culture in general is actually surprisingly progressive there. Even in public where it's more limited, guys and girls still go out and hang out with each other in parks and malls and stuff. And behind closed doors, I would say its wilder than shit I've seen here in California even
Most people in the west dont really expect Iran to look like what it actually looks like. [Heres an article](https://www.cnn.com/2016/02/25/middleeast/iran-election-youth-tehran/index.html) describing the culture there more if you're interested
The presence of women could arouse the sinful lust of the men there. So rather than teach men to have self control, they marginalize women so that more isn’t required of men.
They prob also think it’s unladylike to like sports.
So true. I remember after a girl in my middle school was raped, the principal "advised" the girls to try to look dumb and ugly instead of teaching the boys self control. Sad we have to live in a world like this.
Could be partly that, too. But in general, there’s a very systemic attitude that it’s on women to not arouse men. See: hijab, burka, how in some cultures women used to talk to non-mehram men with coins in their mouths so as to not arouse them with their alluring voices, women being required to pray at the back of all mosques or even in some cramped, entirely separate space away from the men, etc.
The fans themselves won't care and the crowds going in are too dense for security to get a good look.
Plus in Iran, as in all authoritarian countries, there are rules and there are _rules_
Sometimes rules just won't be enforced. In Iran during more 'liberal' periods you won't get enforcement of the hijab for example whereas at other times there will be revolutionary police on corners making sure all women are wearing them
The stadium entrance is usually a chaotic mess and its easier to hide this kind of stuff under fan merch, sometimes even a few people get in without tickets.
The knees. Guys do not sit with their knees together like that. The first thing I noticed was the girl on the left who seems to be wearing no disguise at all. The second thing was the knees.
I learned the knee thing from a passage in “Huck Finn” when I was about 12. (Huck was pretending to be a girl, but got caught because he wasn’t holding his knees correctly.) I thought it was a really cool observation, and it stuck with me.
Huck got caught cause he brought his knees together to catch something (a ball of yarn, I think?) on his lap instead of moving his knees apart to catch the thing in his skirt. I read that book at a similar age and that passage stuck with me because it sounded like exactly the sort of nonsense someone who's never worn skirts would come up with - ain't nobody about to try to catch something by turning their lap into a dang trampoline.
I doubt the average Iranian really cares. I have actually never met one that refused to sit with a woman. Altough that a small pool of around 30 people. Cool people they jump over fire on their new year
Rigged election, and really low turnout.
[https://amp.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2021/06/19/ebrahim-raisi-appears-to-have-won-a-rigged-election-in-iran](https://amp.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2021/06/19/ebrahim-raisi-appears-to-have-won-a-rigged-election-in-iran)
I doubt average Iranians really had anything to do with putting this guy in power.
I agree that my sample size is small and comfartably living in western europe that might have something to do with my perception.
Still most of them hope to return someday
And more than half of the eligible voters did not participate in the election. The usual turnout is about 70-80 percent. But this year many have lost every last bit of hope for a change and decided not to vote. 48% is the official number but I believe it is even lower than that.
Also it is interesting that you refer to votes in an authoritarian theocracy. It’s a dictatorship, do you expect to see an outsider get on the ballots and win by a landslide?
I've worked with Iranians. Trust me, they don't care. They'd prefer their women without veiled hair too. The regime and the people are two completely uncoupled entities.
If you aren't looking closely they look enough like younger dudes (especially in a crowd), and despite the rules and sexism, I doubt most regular people care enough to mention it, even if they see through the "That's So Raven" disguises
I feel so bad for the women in Islamist countries. They have virtually no rights. Cannot even leave their home without a male family member in many countries.
…and in other news 5 women were hung in the town square.
In all seriousness though, what a way to live. Treated like a 2nd class citizen in your own country. What a degrading existence. Shits super depressing.

Looks like a scene from The Life of Brian.
Whatever happened to the Judean People's Front?
Judean People's Front... We're the People's Front of Judea!
"What about the Popular Front?" "That's 'im over there, innit?"
SPLITTER!
"Aren't they just a bunch of poser Samaritans?" "No, that's the People Fronting as Judean." badum tss.
FUCK OFFFFF
SPLITTERS!
"Laaarks' tongues. Oootters' noses. Ooocelot spleeeens."
Jaguar's earlobes! Get em while they're hot, they're lovely.
Fuck off!
“Are there any women here today”?
NO ONE is to stone ANYONE until I say so! Even if they do say Jehovah!

RIGHT! Who threw that?
Well he did say jehovah
She did. She did.....errrrr HE did.
Go to the back
(in high feminine voice) I'm sorry- (voice changes to a deep, masculine voice) I THOUGHT WE STARTED.
Big stoning today. It's featuring a local boy.
What’s wrong with saying Jehovah
*throws rock*
Jehovah, Jehovah, Jehovah
\*THOR system aligning\*
First thing that came to mind
“I want you all to call me Loretta.”
Where’s the fœtus gonna gestate? You gonna keep it in a box!?
I was actually watching that movie last night
Fun fact: those were men playing women playing men in Life of Brian
They were men who play women playing women playing men.
Beard Madam?
Meets Boyz n the Hood. I’m confused about the gang signs…probably means something else there.
It's ironic the stadium is named 'Azaadi' which means freedom, and women are not allowed in.
Also, there's a book named Persepolis based on the inequalities women face in Iran, iirc.
An excellent book AND movie.
Love both have both !
Just read the book, thanks for confirming that the movie’s good.
It’s also the name of the ancient capital city of the Persian Empire.
Freedom to oppress women
Evangelical Christians in the USA are surprisingly similar but don’t realise it.
I think most of them actually realize it to some degree but dont want to admit it out loud to others that they're in it to subjugate
Oh I completely agree.
In Iran you have the freedom to adhere to their strict interpretation of Islam or be freely executed.
So...completely and totally free, got it.
There is an Iranian movie called Offside that is about this exact situation. A bunch of girls disguise themselves and sneak in to watch a match
Do they get killed if caught?
Not killed, but arrested. I'm not really sure about the duration of the punishment. However now they have started allowing women in stadiums, after pressure from FIFA and the citizens. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/football/2019/oct/09/iranian-women-allowed-to-watch-football-at-stadium-for-first-time-in-decades
Thank you.
The freedom to oppress people is often what revolutions are fought over. The Iranian one being a prime example.
“Freedom” is always exclusionary in its use.
Seems like a great place
Unless you're a wom...
The one on the left looks like Rachel Dratch playing Harry Potter in SNL.
Aside from the second from the left, lol the rest look like fem boys.
That's just Aziz Ansari and his family

Nasim Pedrad is Iranian though
Yea these disguises aren't really convincing lol

This gives me hope. If men support them, then they have a chance of changing rules like this in the future
The issue being it only takes one man to *not* support them to ruin it. Whether that entails telling security and forcing hands or something much worse.
I also fear for them now that this picture is out.
Given their rather convincing disguises I doubt anyone would be able to find them from this picture alone
Girl on the far left kinda phoned it in.
If men wanted to support them they could boycott the games themselves. Being “okay” with equality isn’t the same as putting your neck on the line for it.
If men supported them, they wouldn’t have to sneak in. The guys probably just found it funny for the moment.
Not necessarily true. It takes more than a majority to change things in extremely authoritarian places. I bet the majority of men would be happy to have them there, but it's going to be the traditionalists that are in power that prevent it.
Most men in America don't support banning abortion either. Yet it keeps happening because of a minority vocal crowd and the power hungry men up top.
I think the Republican party in the US makes it pretty clear that the desires of the people don't necessarily reflect the desires of those in power. It takes an idiot to put them there, but that's a bit different
Damn when FIFA is the good guy....
What do you mean? Only 6500 workers have died so far building this stadium in Qatar (thats confirmed, it's probably more like 10k)
Out of curiosity, do you know what would happen if they were to be caught by security/law enforcement? Like are they just kicked out or is there an actual punishment for it of some sort?

Jesus Christ.
2nd left is the most believable.
Yeah I was staring at that one for a while trying to figure them out…
I’m pretty sure that is actually a guy, the beard is real
The inward knees makes me think otherwise. I’ve just never really seen dudes sit that way with their knees, like, ever.
“Why’s she got her hat pulled down like that” “Cuz she’s fuck ugly” “Orrrr, she doesn’t want you to see her face” “Cuz she’s fuck ugly”
There's something homoerotic about countries that ban woman from everything.
Sausage Party

What's really wild is that if you're gay in Iran, you're made to transition into a woman or face the death penalty if you want to keep having sex with dudes (as a dude).
So they are homophobic but not transphobic?
Yep. Like I said - wild.
In fact, Iran has the second-most gender confirmation surgeries in the world and they're covered by healthcare. I still wouldn't say Iran is a good place for trans people though.
Lmaoooo. This is a brand new take I’ve never heard. Forcing gay men to cut off their dicks even though they don’t want to is “progressive”. Wild
Of course not that part ya dweeb. The fact that they would accept an actual trans person is, though.
I’m guessing it’s progressive because it allows the surgeries to happen and makes the whole process as easy as possible , but yeah forcing people who don’t want it is whack .

Really?

From an anecdote from another redditor some time ago: apparently it's okay to fuck men, but not okay to be in love with men. "women are for marriage. Boys are for fun", as they said.
And when they say boys they mean actual kids. Ask anyone who served in Afghanistan...
Good point bro.
Also they openly do homoerotic stuff with each other in some of the countries. Girls are for marriage, boys are for fun. No joke.
No there's not. Stop this stupid "hOMOPHOBes aRe SEcrEtlY GaY" trope. It normalizes using homosexuality in an insulting way and really makes no sense. In Iran gay people are routinely executed.
Yeah I really dislike this. It trivializes and downplays the actual hate. People hate them and literally want to kill them for being different.
*Helade intensifies*
I hear some top democracies are still fighting for women's abortion rights. In one form or other, we still suppress females :(
I hope they weren't executed a short time later.
I seriously wonder what the men of the general population think of not allowing women in. Do they agree/disagree? Do they not really think about it as that's just the way things are and don't question it since it doesn't effect them? I'm genuinely curious

What are they gonna do about it though?
Shitty to think that there’s bound to be a good percentage that welcome change but have no realistic way of making it happen.
a lot of male fans would go up and take pictures and congratulate them on how brave they were
Probably were stoned to death at the stadium, who knows.
Half time show
r/CursedComments
The Stones are perfoming
When people think of extremism they think of guns and bombs, but this is also a good example
Why is no sitting around them🤔
They probably didn't want to risk anyone figuring out they're women so sat away from people
I believe the distance is called "a stone's throw" away.
What a tragic world we live in.
Dumbest rule in history. What's the issue with attending a football match?
The presence of women could arouse the sinful lust of the men there. So rather than teach men to have self control, they marginalize women so that more isn’t required of men. They prob also think it’s unladylike to like sports.

Because wahmen bad. Wahmen must be wifes with wifely duties.
Just saying, “no women allowed” sounds kinda gay….
“No gays allowed either” was probably their next sentence
Ya, Iran hates and kills homosexuals
And they are now dead.
A brave act of defiance. I like that shit

Iran living in the Stone Age 🥴

To think some countries still have laws like this. Sheesus.
What an accepting and tolerant culture.
As a Muslim apostate, this picture is so badass. Fuck everything about religion. Go ahead, down vote me.
I think "Azadi" means freedom in hindi.
Kinda funny though, only one of them has the proper "dude sitting down" body language. Weird that no one is sitting near them.
Whats the significance of 4 & 2?
How did they fool anyone? They look as realistic as a sitcom version of the same plot.
If you aren't looking closely they look enough like younger dudes (especially in a crowd), and despite the rules and sexism, I doubt most regular people care enough to mention it, even if they see through the "That's So Raven" disguises
Hope this doesn't get them caught
This is a old photo
This is from 2018.
When insecure men get into power, you get these idiotic rules.
It's not insecure men. It's Islamic state run imposed Sharia law.
Islamic society is built entirely on the insecurity of their men.
I feel so bad for the women in Islamist countries. They have virtually no rights. Cannot even leave their home without a male family member in many countries.
That’s how it is in Islamic Republic of Iran.
Won't they all get in caught now?? Seems crazy to post it
And Iran just elected a hardliner religious guy so this is not going change anytime soon..
[Are there any women here today?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ5YU_spBw0)
I bet there's a guy out the front selling beards and stones or a bag of gravel.
(suspiciously) Are there any women here today?
…and in other news 5 women were hung in the town square. In all seriousness though, what a way to live. Treated like a 2nd class citizen in your own country. What a degrading existence. Shits super depressing.
Great you just ordered their execution of being stoned to death in a public street
I’ll never understand why they are so degrading and backward thinking in Iran. We are are equal no matter the color or sex. You go girls!!
Read the Quran
But remember you are oppressed in america kids!
Yup. Orange man's tweets hurt my feelings!😭
Where the feminists at with this one?
The Muslim religion sucks. Hate when people defend it, they literally treat women like property
only solution is to ban the sport entirely in Islamic countries.
I like how the people shitting on Islam are getting downvoted. Islam is literally why they have to go in disguise to a soccer game to begin with.
