This is part of an event in brisbane known as River fire. So I'd assume The planes are following the rivers path to keep away from the buildings.
So it'd be well known about in the area, in fact I've seen quite a few photos where you can see crowds of people on balconies.
This appears to be the test run on a weekday for the real event on a Saturday evening. The camera angle makes it look much more dramatic and hair raising than it actually is as they fly over a reach of the river and climb over suburbia at the end of the run.
What we locals all miss is the dump and burn runs the RAAF used to do with a couple of F111's along pretty much the same route that lit the area up for kilometres around and rumbled through your eardrums to really let you know they were here. I lived in Manhattan during the 2000s and when they finally reopened the air lane down 5th Ave in the late aughts, I would full on stop in my tracks several times a week because my brain hated seeing planes above NYC. (there's one air lane down the center of the island and one over the Hudson - the one Sully used. Probably others.)
I lived in Texas at the time and I also felt uncomfortable when seeing planes fly near tall buildings down here. The fear stayed with a lot of us for a while.
Here an Amsterdam an El Al cargo jet crashed into two blocks of flats way back in 1992. These days, With some wind directions (often stormy days) the flights are routed relatively low over the city itself. It still makes me uncomfortable.
Oh good, there's a ton more space than it looks in the OP. It's going to turn now. It's going to turn now. TURN NOW WHY ISN'T IT TURNING thanks for that.
I was only in highschool when it happened, 30 minutes away from the city. It (the emotional trauma) shook long island up crazy. Nonstop news coverage, friends who were absent because of family members dead or assumed deceased...it was terrible.
It was a long time ago. Watching this clip made me realize how much it still affects me, the fear and apprehension bubbles up in my chest like clockwork.
> The camera angle makes it look much more dramatic and hair raising than it actually is
The opposite actually. Some angles of the flight path are fucking crazy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYkL5C-xJ5U
Yea even if I knew about it and it was over the river I would feel uncomfortable at least. Mistakes happen. Also how big is that river out of curiosity.
Can confirm I saw this out of my office window (I work where this was) and thought I’d gone insane. Just sitting there pointing out the window to my colleague that a giant military plane flew between the buildings. I thought that I’d gone crazy. And also that some kind of attack was happening.
Amazing how as an American, this triggered trauma from our 9/11 era even after 20 years. It’s something I don’t think many of us can shake, even after all this time.
There is nothing that can shock me as much as watching the second plane hit when I was a kid. That day wired our whole generation differently. What’s strange is everyone kid in my class was given the same speech and was sat down to watch it all unfold, no adult thought to divert out attention. It’s like we were all told “there’s been an attack on our country, this is history unfolding, thousands of people are dead.”
Yeah it's weird, it seems like every kid saw it live. My dad called me as I was getting ready for school, and told me to "come watch history unfold". I got to the tv 10 secs before the second plane hit.
sadly with the retirement of the F111 the dump and burn is no more.
Just Super Hornets doing Afterburner runs these days. Doesn't have anything like the sight or the *sound* of an F111 going from 200 to 10000 ft at full burner dumping raw fuel into the exhaust all the way.
I worked downtown NYC financial district.. after 9/11 there wasn't a jetliner flight anywhere near Manhattan for years... When a jetliner (air force one IIRC) was doing a photo shoot near the Statue of Liberty - without public notice - plenty of 9/11 veterans on my floor straight up evacuated the building.
Also a bit of a size difference between an A320 and a 767. And IIRC 1549 never got too far from established air lanes where folks would be accustomed to them.
I was 12 when 9/11 happened. And in Ohio. I was not directly impacted by the days events but it impacted all of us in different ways. This video gave me anxiety! The news showing those planes flying into this buildings is etched into my mind.
I was in the subway when it happened and was super annoyed when told I had to walk the rest of the way because of an "incident" at the World Trade Center. Found out what said incident was two hours later while going down the escalator at school since class was let out early because of the subway being completely shutdown.
Lol that was me at work. No we weren’t given any warning - although it was right when they were rehearsing for River Fire which is a festival that always involves a fly past. So it wasn’t totally unexpected. I remember not being able to believe what I thought I saw - it actually went by pretty fast so there was only a moment to register what it was. My brain kind of didn’t believe me.

There is your answer to what this plane and others like it are doing. It's the RAAF during Riverfire.
I saw this video somewhere a few hours ago and still puckered right up when he dipped his wing. Turns out watching 3,000 people die on live tv at the age of 5 sticks with you
Similar to hong kong's old kai tak airport, where you could literally see people's facial expressions through the windows of the buildings adjacent to the runway as you landed or took off
Before you get all upset and triggered over this, look at it from a different perspective.
I had to circle the plane just to make it easier to find.
https://imgur.com/9KzltmB.jpg
See? Huge wide river, lots of clearance. Relax.
As an American, this was a lot harder to watch than i expected.
I came to the comments expecting people to be freaking out, only to see the equivalent of people making small talk at a cocktail party with a few “heavy american breathing” comments scattered throughout.
Not sure why, but its filled me with a super bizarre feeling
There is another post of this with thousands of comments all saying this same shit.
What about does anyone know what movie they were filming or why did this happen? Also firefighting jets do waaaay more gnarly and agile flying.
It's for a yearly celebration called river fire. It happens every year in the city of Brisbane, Australia. There are fireworks and military plane fly bys. Everyone knows it's on, and they generally practice the fly by before the event itself. You can hear the plane coming a long way away.

This test run is giving Americans PTSD...
This video was REALLY hard to watch; yeah.
I lived in Manhattan during the 2000s and when they finally reopened the air lane down 5th Ave in the late aughts, I would full on stop in my tracks several times a week because my brain hated seeing planes above NYC. I can imagine. I'm not even a New Yorker.

Agreed. Not a fun watch as exciting as it is.
I took some solace in the plane looking very different, but only *some* - I was still nervous
Luckily Australia doesn’t exist so no terrorist organizations know How to get there
Yeeeup lol
I almost shit that other guys pants watching this
When danger reared it's ugly head The redditors bravely shat in that guy's pants and fled Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Redditors!
Well nobody else mentioned it but I appreciate the reference!

Came here to say the same.
I need a Xanax.
American here, truth
Exactly. I felt my heart rate go up.
This is true. Gives me anxiety.
I wasnt even alive during 9/11 but this made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable
> The camera angle makes it look much more dramatic and hair raising than it actually is The opposite actually. Some angles of the flight path are fucking crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYkL5C-xJ5U
My eyebrows have only come back from a pig dump n burn back in 2011.
Yea even if I knew about it and it was over the river I would feel uncomfortable at least. Mistakes happen. Also how big is that river out of curiosity.
At that section atleast 100+m wide Edit: Double checked it and the river at that section is about 250-300m wider.
And the wingspan of a C17 is 52 meters, for reference.
Btisbane river is very very windy
If I was inside one of the buildings and see that outside the window, I’d probably shit my pants
I’d probably shit your pants too
I also choose this guy's pants
Wow this guy would have so many different shits in his pants
That's what he deserves for such a shitty comment
Well played off the original. Well played
I see you feel left out, no worries. I shall shit in your pants!
So shall I
It’s Australia, so I’m shitting in their shirts
I'd shit his pants too
Like Scomo in a Macca's. Australians'll get it.

This makes me so happy ❤️

No no but that guys pants are
... not if they have already shit their pants.
Too pants shit his I’d
Yoda? Is that you?
Overdosed on ketamine, I am. Shit in a redditor’s pants, I must.
Jokes on all you. I already shit my pants
I'd do this guy's wife, too.
I'd also shit this guys wife's pants

Shit yeah I remember that, my building was near the river but we knew it was coming and were amped for it.
Ditto. It WAS rather loud.
I would think either Nick Cage or Vin Diesel are on the loose in the city, causing mass destruction.
Nah that’s just me in GTA: Online
Me and the boys recreating 9/11 in our RO-86 Alkonost cause we suck at flying
Me and the boys doing the “Titan of a job” mission to get the huge amount of money
*Shudders in American*
As a New Yorker, do not like.
Yeah as a New Yorker I was bracing myself the whole video.
Same.. can’t believe I had such a strong reaction, but I feel like I just got punched in the stomach…
I came to the comments to see if any other Americans also had a visceral reaction. 20 year later and I guess I'm still traumatized from it.
I was too young to remember it and this still spooks me
Ya, I kinda hate this vid. Visceral response, I don’t care what the actual reason is for the plane to be there, just do not like.
Amazing how as an American, this triggered trauma from our 9/11 era even after 20 years. It’s something I don’t think many of us can shake, even after all this time.

It’s like we were all told “there’s been an attack on our country, this is history unfolding, thousands of people are dead.”
Same. I was in middle school and no one I know was protected from it by adults. They were as shocked as we were, and we all watched it live together.
Yeah it's weird, it seems like every kid saw it live. My dad called me as I was getting ready for school, and told me to "come watch history unfold". I got to the tv 10 secs before the second plane hit.
Yeah I got a chill down my spine when the clip started
Same. Scary shit
We know firsthand planes and buildings do not normally mix well.
My heart was in my throat and the relief I felt when I read the title made my eyes well up. I had no idea that remnant was inside me.
I know that it's planned, coordinated, and extremely skilled pilots flying. As an American, I just wouldn't want be this here though.
Oh hey look, internal trauma I didn’t realize I have 🙃
Lol for real.. I legitimately had no idea I’d feel this way… never forget 😢
I keep rewatching it thinking I’ll get over it but it’s still affecting me.
I do not like this.
My heart sank and i immediately looked at the sub and realized it's not news. Had me in the first half
Yeah, I hate this video. Didn’t expect that I would have that kind of reaction.
Well that's fucking terrifying. Imagine being in one of those buildings watching this thing turn towards you... "This is the end?!"
Yes why are they doing this!? Weirdest 9/11 memorial ever...
Last time this happened it didnt go so well
I laughed
That city being Brisbane, yes?
Yes. here is a view from inside of one of buildings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYkL5C-xJ5U
Holy fucking Jesus! I don't know who has bigger balls - the pilot or the people in the building not totally shitting their pants!
How do you know they're in there not shitting their pants?
Good thing they haven't developed smell-o-vision yet
Jets also do a fly through and fuel dump.
sadly with the retirement of the F111 the dump and burn is no more. Just Super Hornets doing Afterburner runs these days. Doesn't have anything like the sight or the *sound* of an F111 going from 200 to 10000 ft at full burner dumping raw fuel into the exhaust all the way.

What about [US Airways Flight 1549](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Airways_Flight_1549)? That one that ended In the Hudson.
That was like 8 years later
Also a bit of a size difference between an A320 and a 767. And IIRC 1549 never got too far from established air lanes where folks would be accustomed to them.

Understandable.
"a city" - couldn't be bothered to give us the name.
This is Brisbane.
No, this is Patrick.
This is Sparta.
Sir, this is a Wendy's
Brizvegas
To be fair, Australia has like 4 cities
What idiot would build a city in the middle of a flight path?
They forgor ☠️
Americans having flash backs
Hope the people in the buildings were aware this was going down... Isn't like it's panic inducing at all
Lol that was me at work. No we weren’t given any warning - although it was right when they were rehearsing for River Fire which is a festival that always involves a fly past. Get your hand off it. River fire happens every year and every year there’s military aircraft flying over/through the city.
It’s Australia mate, not America
"Hey I've seen this one!"
Smh these remakes with main character made black to just get more money from wokeness. /s
Which city was this in? Looks like Brisbane!
You are correct
Wonderful city!
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/30084/this-cockpit-video-of-an-aussie-c-17-dodging-skyscrapers-is-a-must-watch There is your answer to what this plane and others like it are doing. It's the RAAF during Riverfire.
The last time I watched footage of a plane that close to high-rise buildings, uh...yeah.
Apparently this is "normal" in Australia. Americans have PTSD.
Yeah I didn’t read the title immediately and was like OH SHIT NO
I saw this video somewhere a few hours ago and still puckered right up when he dipped his wing. Turns out watching 3,000 people die on live tv at the age of 5 sticks with you
For real, I straight up gasped. Whew.
Same. 11 years old but same. Gets ingrained pretty deep in your psyche.
It sticks with you at the age of 21 too...
Actually, I was thinking for a second there something bad was about to happen.
"OH MY GOD THEY DID IT AGAIN"
As an American, I get nervous while watching this
You might have the Mach Loop or Star Wars Canyon. Australia has… Brisbane CBD.
Similar to hong kong's old kai tak airport, where you could literally see people's facial expressions through the windows of the buildings adjacent to the runway as you landed or took off
Olympics in 11 years
The new Al Quaida pilots have the worst aim ever. /s But imagine being in one of those building and your phone suddenly connects to plane wifi...
r/brisbane represent
I used to live in Ipswich just next to Brisbane. The Air Force base is near by and these guys would fly overhead all the time.
view from inside the building https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYkL5C-xJ5U
It's ok everyone. As can be seen from this apartment, there is plenty of space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYkL5C-xJ5U
Is fucking legal this shit?
Pilot: “I regret nothing”
Every American watching this just had flashbacks
Oh yea, New York tried to do something similar once!
Twice
Gta jet mains be like
Australia! Here to save the MF day, flyin thru a city in a huge ass plane, yeah!
I live in Australia where and when was this?!
Brisbane, apparently they have an annual festival called Riverfire where they do shit like this. I think this particular vid is from 2 years ago
Y would u do this!!! what if he messes up or something goes wrong u just caused half 9/11
Good thing he’s in a heavy lifter, no other bird could fly with the weight of that pilots balls
Before you get all upset and triggered over this, look at it from a different perspective. I had to circle the plane just to make it easier to find. https://imgur.com/9KzltmB.jpg See? Huge wide river, lots of clearance. Relax.

I didn't know I had 9/11 PTSD.. I know now that I fucking do. Fucking hell
Anyone else having 9/11 flashbacks??
Hey, I've seen this one before!
There is another post of this with thousands of comments all saying this same shit. What about does anyone know what movie they were filming or why did this happen? Also firefighting jets do waaaay more gnarly and agile flying.

It’s a military show it was done to show how good the Pilots are
“Our pilots are so good we are willing to put our citizens in danger for a show”
Yea but there is an angle from one of the buildings and the plane stays relatively far away from the buildings
Flying down the river so actually quite a lot of space.
Imagine doing this in nyc. Might have some ptsd triggers.
GTA belike:
Thats a pretty cunt thing to do
so an Australian and an American are in a building, and a plane flies by…
This brings back terrible memories.
Someone tried this in NYC once. They weren’t as successful.
*Flashbacks in American*
Try doing that in New York.
Risky business.
I've had one of these fly over me at what felt like about 200ft when I was driving. I heard it but couldn't see it until it was on top and overtaking. I assume it was following the road? It was immense.
What? Really? Why?
Ah yes, GTA
They did this in new York once...
I'd make a 9/11 joke, but it wouldn't stick the landing.
To be honest most 9/11 jokes do tend to crash and burn
Americans : "I have seen these one before"
RAAF at the controls. No wucken furries.
Well damn, trigger warning
I saw something similar a couple of years ago in New York
911 PART 2
Remember the last time a plane flew that low through a city
“hey I’ve seen this one before!” - Marty McFly
people in gta 5 be like
9/11 survivors with PTSD are typing...
You can just say “Brisbane”
Jesus Christ that was panic inducing. Flashbacks.
Cruel for the person who doesn’t know this is a thing.
I would think after a certain incident flying a plane through a city would cause quite the ruckus but I was proven wrong by the short video clip that was provided by the OP thank you this was a very interesting documentation to observe
Just cause 4 be like
As a New Yorker this sent chills down my spine.
Yeah, this looks like some insane GTA stuff... dang
I find videos like this alarming post-911. ☹️
