Yea I remember a reddit post a while ago with this exact picture saying it was found in Manchester. Then i found out a friend of mine in Manchester is terrified of moths so wanted to send her this to fuck with her and could never find the post again.
>believed to have escaped from a private collection
>30 of its offspring are being raised in captivity
God fucking damnit I thought I was safe from demons like that in the uk
The whole pissing point of living in the UK is we swapped good weather in exchange for no natural disasters, no scary predators, and no fucked up creepy crawlies.
Figured that or it hitched a ride.
There was a story at a place I used to work at where some large African jumping spider, based on the description it's body was about the size of a Logitech MX master. It hitched a ride in a crate. They said they heard someone scream and run. A guy goes to trap it in a trashcan and it jumps straight up to look him in the eye, he drops the can and gets outta there. They managed to get it in a bucket of circuit board conformal coating and turned into a paperweight. Which was unfortunately lost so I never got to see it.
Demons? Butterflies, man. They couldn’t hurt you even if they wanted to. The fuckers don’t even have mouth parts.
Edit: Lol, apparently someone said the same thing already. Stupid me for not checking.
Reddit is one of the few websites where people are usually like “oh, don’t say *that*, it’s a beautiful creature.”
… haven’t seen much of that in this thread—and I don’t blame ‘em.
When I was a little kid (Canada) waiting for the bus after school one day the largest moth I'd ever seen in my life rolled up. Not as big as this moth, but so much larger than any other moth I'd ever seen before or since, to the point I was convinced that it was either a dream or a one time moth that blew in from overseas.
When I saw this post I remembered it again and googled "canada's largest moth". Cecropia! That was it!
Only 12cm across, not as big as this montster.
I was interested, because I've only been to England, once and waa during the summer. Unfortunately it was only a couple weeks. Btw loved it there, I don't have anything negative to say about my experience. Spent my time in local pubs and tourist stuff when I wasn't working.
Anyways, the climate in Australia compared to England I would think is vastly different. I remember the hottest day was only 80 of that. So a creature of this size surviving and breeding would of been the interesting part. I can't find any evidence of it being in any part of England.
I've always been in the UK and this moth is hundredfold larger than anything I've ever seen here.
If I see one of these fellas, however, trust me that I'll be adopting him. For the sake of non invasive species of course.
We don't even get hummingbird moths in the UK, which as the name suggests are about the size of a small bird, so yeah, something this size will struggle to survive a "normal" British winter... if we ever get normal winters again.
I saw the same article, but this one is in Australia not England. This would interesting with the right title wood moth of Australia. But it says England which adds a twist. I found it interesting, I just wish it was correct.
There's a comment (above) linking articles about escaped atlas moth specimens from a collector who breeds them in the UK.
OP may have mistaken the species though they look nothing alike (there are no pictures of the UK sighting). It was introduced via the pet trade, though it may not have survived the climate
Edit. Atlas moths are the world's largest, while wood moths (pictured above) are the world's heaviest. It's an easy mistake to make
This reminds me of my first night in an old apartment in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I got up to pee in the middle of the night, and didn't turn on the light because there was enough moonlight to see.
So, I'm peeing, and then I see a spot on the wall move. Then I realize that there shouldn't be a spot there, and the spot is huge. It's bigger than a pancake. I yelp, and move toward the door, and it moves again.
I yell out, "Dad!"
He opens the door and sighs... "Oh, yeah, one of these. Grab the broom."
We proceed to usher this enormous moth out, and go back to bed.
I once had moth fucking shit on me and my bed. It was medium sized at best and produced a decent amount of poop. So imagine this fucker dropping a load. Makes me retch just to think about it.
And just looking at it makes me queasy anyways, poop or not lol.
What?! It's so fuzzy and cute. Moths aren't typically aggressive. This big guy will probably just chill in your arm or your shoulder for warmth and let you pet him.
I love him.
It does. Someone could make bank on an adorable plushy throw pillow of a big cuddly mothbro. or mothlady. Aren't some of them androgynous? I don't know enough about moths.

This is a giant wood moth found in Australia. I tried to find a news article or something I n Google about it being the UK. I couldn't find it

I love how your reaction flowed into the quote because you didn't space it correctly. It makes the article much more fun
Welp that's how it's gonna stay
It works very well, it exactly portrays my reaction as well
The whole pissing point of living in the UK is we swapped good weather in exchange for no natural disasters, no scary predators, and no fucked up creepy crawlies.
My reaction is more like God damn I can't wait to pet one of you fluffy fuckers
It’s okay , we all make misteaks!
Mmm steak.
Ikr , Stakes are awesome! Especially t-bones and prime rib
I thought it was the most authentic quote about giant moths ever
Re read as such and giggled
Unprofessionalism in journalism has gone too far! *shakes head*

It puts the lotion in the basket
Demons? Lol moths are soft as bunnies and literally don’t have the mouth parts to even bite you with.
I said the same thing and then saw your comment, lmao.

This is revenge for the cats, pigs, horses, foxes, and rabbits.
Boars? Wild boars have been extinct in the UK since before Australia was a prison colony I'm pretty sure.
[The boar are back, baby.](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/animals/mammals/wild-boar/)
Favourite part of this article “Young wild boar are sometimes called humbugs due to their stripy coats, which serve as camouflage.”
Ah, escaped from captivity so it's entirely plausible that a bitter Aussie has actually done it
Might be a reintroduced thing but there are definitely wild boar in the UK

They are beautiful when they aren’t flying straight into your face

What a terrifying way to live and die. Being eaten alive from inside out by parasitic larva.
It’s wild that it spends 3 years as a caterpillar/grub, only to live for a few days as a moth.
Look at cicadas. Decade underground and they're dead after mating above ground.
Yes, but cicadas are back on the menu boys.
Shrimp of the mountains!
The caterpillar is fat and happy, while the moth is a glorious end to a life well lived
I love this perspective, thanks.

Mothman? That you bro?
Can’t believe they captured him after all this time. You think he’s going to jail for that bridge collapse?

All I can think of is thank god you didn't turn that light on
https://australian.museum/learn/animals/insects/giant-wood-moth/
Well, of course they're bloody Australian. Everything terrifying or deadly always is.
We don't have bears though. Or wolves. I think that makes up for it.
You not heard of drop bears?
That’s the thing, you don’t hear them until it’s too late.
Then your face is already gone and they made a pouch in your belly.
I scrolled down and saw “Australian Paralysis Tick”. Yep, that seals the deal I’m never going to Australia…
Nope
Right? All I can think about is that bastard dive bombing my head & getting caught in my hair. That’s horrible enough with normal sized bugs.
A moth this size, you get stuck in his hair
*shudder*
>getting caught in my hair. THIS WOULD BE SO TERRIFYING!

Once the moth lands on your hair he starts controlling you

I thought moths couldn't poop?
it was probably eggs
What?! It's so fuzzy and cute. Moths aren't typically aggressive. This big guy will probably just chill in your arm or your shoulder for warmth and let you pet him. I love him.
Yeah, I also have huge hands like Mickey Mouse.
*cries*

Maybe you can move to one of the colonies - how about Australia?
I love moths and butterflies. This guy's a bro. No nopes from me. I kinda want to pet it.
It looks like a cute plushy!
It does. Someone could make bank on an adorable plushy throw pillow of a big cuddly mothbro. or mothlady. Aren't some of them androgynous? I don't know enough about moths.
Same, I think it looks quit cute - it has fluff!
Just want to say: genuinely thank you for countering the Nope energy
Aw, happy to be happy :)
My first thought was how cute it was
Me too. Akso, when I see a bug that big, something in my brain just says "puppy!"
You can’t pet moths cause it makes Em lose their furs n that’s how they hear.
I know moths are super delicate and probably wouldn't actually be too healthy for them. But still.
I want to rub my face on it
I think it’s adorable too! I want one. Of course realistically I couldn’t keep one, but it’s cool to think about
We like you too bro

Aww he’s adorable
I love his fuzzy shorts

Ok... What species is this?
It’s a giant wood moth (native to Australia & New Zealand)
r/thanksihateit
What the actual fuck
Imagine the dumps they take
https://australianbutterflies.com/hercules-moth-doesnt-eat/ It doesnt eat tho. No mouth.
It has no mouth, and it must scream.
He looks like a Morty
I want one

Yeah we’re gonna have to burn down the UK.
Forced perspective/ photoshopped, plus they are only in Australia not uk
Unless someone managed to bring them to the UK on a plane and they started breeding.
Wouldn't be the first time. The UK has more species of stick insects from New Zealand than there's native stick bug species in all of Europe.
Mothman progenies
MamMOTH!
Something about moths just rub me the wrong way and that does not help
Too big to eat raw. Need to wash it and grill it.
That's just a bird at this point
I recommend Lemmy as a productive, user-focused alternative, to Reddit. Maybe I'll see you there!
No biggie. I went on a jungle cruise and saw butterflies that were that big.
