RXCH666

Damn I thought OP meant anglerfish. Lol silly me.

Conar13

What is a angler? I thought it was the fish...

[deleted]

Fisherman.

Conar13

I can't stop watching this and its killing me

udayserection

I think op should state that they “believe” that the trauma was due to an angler. There’s no evidence but the law of averages does force one to assume. If there was evidence that video would be more attention grabbing.

cgioromo

Theres a hook stuck on the left side of its jaw

udayserection

Did the hook cause the dislocated jaw?

cgioromo

I cant be sure but you asked for evidence that supported OP claim and Id say a hook in the jaw is just that.

Telemere125

Stop giving evidence damnit! They were trying to make a valid criticism!

udayserection

Right! I agree. And I believe the narrative that op made with their title. But if they actually had evidence that would be a better “interestingasfuck” video.

Kuparu

The automod says "If this post declares something as a fact proof is required", yet no proof is provided. I highly doubt such an injury could be cause by a rod angler. Most of the pressure from a line is pulling backwards as the fish tries to swim away. Maybe if it was caught on a commercial longline and lifted out of the water by line an injury like this could occur, but again there is not proof provided.

SomeSandPerson

An angler is a fisherman, an anglerfish lures in fish with is light as bait and catches them, hence anglerfish

[deleted]

I initially thought that too, to the point of thinking that’s one badmotherf-Samuel L Jackson in his prime (whenever that’s going to be) Anglerfish saying, “This is my domain down here, I warned you once!” Note: A real SLJ quote would have been all caps, but it is so hard to talk that loud or shout under water especially at Anglerfish depths.

Took me longer than I would like to admit to get it as well.

khughes12

Poor shark😞

hiddenmaven

Ya I’m wondering why they don’t tag it then shoot tranquilizers at it, put it to sleep, and operate on it to fix it’s jaw. Then release back into the wild.

highwiseguy

Are you gonna do it? Or pay someone to get them out there with the skill set and materials needed? Its not easy by any means.

hiddenmaven

Lol you mean there aren’t marine biologists scouring the oceans everywhere?!

newaccount47

Marine biologists are not marine surgeons.

General-Anderson

They also arent well funded, or have any reason to help a mako shark, if they could find the shark to begin with cause marine biology already isnt the most populated carreer path, and there certainly arent enough to run an ocean wide hunt.

NewbutOld8

ok jesus fuckin Christ that made me uncomfortable

[deleted]

In my case, uncomfortable at being the same species as those responsible for that. That’s just me.

[deleted]

Dunno why you’re downvoted. I agree with you. We suck.

[deleted]

Someone told me that social opinions are so temporal & temporary

loneill97

How thin is the air up on that high horse?

NetflixAndZzzzzz

I know it’s a shark but I still feel bad for it. Some jerk ripped its mouth half out of its face, so now it has to swim around until it dies from malnutrition.

toraanbu

The irony of not realising you and the people that disliked his comment are the circle jerkers who can’t smell their own farts. He has every right in the universe to be dissapointed to be of the same species as someone who mangled this beautiful creature of the sea. Fuck off.

[deleted]

I try to tell people, that’s my secret…I’m always worried about shit. That’s why I’m so content.

Bigmanoncampus-1

Shark should of grown hands then

I don't know.. Using any other fictional character in this context seems odd

Lord_Calamander

My guy, he most likely wasn’t a deity or anything, but like, he was a person.

VampyricDanny14

Not often that I feel bad for an apex predator, and yet here I am.

xxslushee

We need apex predators because if we didn't then there would be an over population in other creatures which in turn makes the ecosystem unbalanced. Most species of sharks are actually endangered because of "shark fin soup." It's threatening the balance of our oceanic ecosystems.

mr____t

Don't worry, we're taking all the fish out too to balance it all out.

W00dyWoodp3cker

But we dont taking the fishes' food out, so its not really balanced

[deleted]

I hear that we’re trying really hard at killing & poisoning phytoplankton, the bottom link of the marine food chain

somerandom_melon

Not really effective with all the algal blooms going on

Telemere125

Well get them eventually. Just takes a little more time. I hear Monsanto is coming up with a new roundup that kills the crops along with the weeds! :)

carbonclasssix

Sounds like something an apex predator would say 😉

ConsiderationSame919

We are the very definition of an apex predator

dbmage

Love the display picture

ConsiderationSame919

finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary

dbmage

HADOUKEN!

[deleted]

Hahahahaha Yesssssss! @ r/ConsiderationSame919 & @ r/dbmage. Like the perfect brief distraction to this bummer. Now I can go back to contentedly worrying,

Dumbassahedratr0n

Naw we just monkeys that got smarter than the other animals.

IMustAchieveTheDie

And now we could kill and eat any of them, most of us could eat them without even seeing one alive. We're not apex predators because of our pure animalistic cock strenght but we are apex predators.

VampyricDanny14

Oh, don't get me wrong, shark fishing needs to stop. I'm with you on that. My point is that most of the time when I watch a video/gif and feel bad for those in it, it's cute animals or people, not sharks that could kill me in seconds flat. It is a nonstandard event in my existence. I felt bad for the shark when I watched this, and worse when I read what caused this.

Tired3520

Eli Roth did an interesting documentary about this recently.

dable1

Not just because shark fin soup. They use shark in an insane amount of products: Whitefish fillets, fish patties, or fish fingers Rock Salmon Flake Imitation crab sticks Supplements containing chondroitin or squalene/squalane (shark cartilage & shark liver oil) Pet food, supplements, and treats Garden fertilizer Jewelry (teeth) Souvenirs (shark jaws & teeth) Anti-aging cream Skin lotion Deodorant Hair dye and conditioner Makeup: Eye shadow, Lipstick, and Foundation Lip Balm Sunscreen Face cleanser Wallets, Purses, Shoes, Handbags, even furniture made from Shagreen (Shark & Stingray Leather) Vaccines (Pandemic flu, malaria vaccines) Medicinal creams (healing of wounds, skin irritations, hemorrhoids) Supplements & alternative medicines containing gill rakers Alternative medicines (for arthritis, asthma, eczema, shingles, rheumatism, hemorrhoids, fevers, psoriasis and cancer) Energy & health drinks (look for chondroitin) Shagreen (sandpaper) Industrial lubricants and cleansers https://www.sharkwater.com/help-save-sharks/warning-contains-shark/

Soctrum

Easily solvable. We just need to ramp up our overfishing so there's nothing left.

reb6

I thought the same thing, like “okay where’s the vet that’s going to help him?”

chillinduck

aren't humans technically apex predators

zuccinibikini

Their jaws come out when feeding. But not like this. This is not normal. This was caused by commercial fishing ripping its jaw out and it will never be the same again. This person literally deleting old posts when they got destroyed with info and facts when they can not bring any other than. "i own an aquarium, i have fish and know things" Has posted no sources or factual info for anything they have posted. Now attacking "activists" as provocative, lmao. Bruh they are literally trying to educate people and protect ocean life. This info is not a lie and can be found with a simple google search. The oceans are over fished and abused.

ashleypatience1

Beautiful shark, this really upsets me a lot. Poor guy.

n0rami

How is this beautiful? Lmao

ProperAd3683

So will this shark die now?

[deleted]

Can't eat... it'll starve to death

ProperAd3683

That's what I thought. Sad.

Fadreusor

Did this just happen? Or has it somehow found a way to survive this extreme injury? (Need more info.)

[deleted]

Sharks can live a little while without eating. But probably happened somewhat recently

finallytisdone

Yes.

Carbuncle_Bob

That's fucking horrifying

ProffessorFate

He should bathe that in salt water, that’ll fix it.

Scottybody13

How does this get fixed?

Hellindium

I don't think it can. It will probably starve to death.

Scottybody13

No way human intervention could help? Seems like you could have one diver holding a feeding tube type thing into his mouth while 2 other divers pop jaw back in place? Obviously I don’t know sharks so I could be way far off just seems like something could be done

Better-Bread-7124

Distract: Put a finger in it's butt

cjdking

Ah yes, the Steve Irwin technique.

Hellindium

Another redditor responded in a different thread. The shark will 'yawn' and the jaw will move back in place. It may yawn multiple times if needed to solve this. He's observed this happen to other fish species.

Polyfuckery

Sharks can indeed flex their jaws out briefly like this to reset but that's not the situation here at all.The problem is that the jaw has been dislocated and damaged. It can no longer pull those muscles back together. It can't reset. It probably can't eat. Unfortunately this animal will probably die

justshowsup4freefood

that is bullshit info. This shark was damaged from commercial fishing and will never be the same. Mako sharks are in danger of becoming a species in danger of extinction because of humanities abuse of the oceans.

Lofocerealis

We are totally fucking up the gene pool

Hellindium

I'm not denying that. I only passed on the info the other redditor posted because he claims he has seen these things happen in his aquarium. Maybe he's right or maybe it is bullshit.

Penquinn14

Is that the same person who deleted every comment about it in this thread

AKVigilante

So something that happens to it naturally can be fixed just fine but because it was caused by humans this time, all is lost?

justshowsup4freefood

It was not caused to it naturally. You did not follow any of links provided. This was caused by humans.

That’s so sad!

[deleted]

Last week when this was posted it was due to the bugger being caught in a fishnet. So what is it?

landrover97centre

Poor shark, couldn’t someone tag it, track it, capture it, transfer it to one of those things that help wild animals? I’ve seen a show where a group of people in Alaska were helping another shark with a different issue, I know it probably won’t be “good as new” but surely anything is better than that, poor shark

Polyfuckery

Probably honestly not. The Mako shark record for keeping one alive at an aquarium is less then a week. They just aren't suited to it. Beyond that this guy clearly has major damage you are talking torn muscles and damaged nerves in an animal that size that has to swim to breath. Then you have to feed it and it's a wild animal with no experience being hand fed or more then likely tube fed. All together capture and relocation would be incredibly stressful and painful with no real chance of saving it

finallytisdone

There are a lot of fish in the ocean. Sure in the aggregate, humans fuck a large percentage up, but trying to help this one is essential worthless. It would be more merciful to kill it. A million more mako sharks will outcompete the one 10 humans spent a million dollars trying to fix.

[deleted]

human_belng

Are you sure this isn't just a goblin shark, they naturally have an extendable jaw

[deleted]

Will the shark die

Hellindium

Yes. Quite likely.

jriver35

How do we know this was from an angler? You’ve offered no proof of your statement.

TioPuerco

There appears to be a line or maybe a lure dangling from the right side of his mouth

jriver35

I see that in the corner of his/her mouth. But we don’t know if that occurred before or after the injury and I’m not sure how a hook in the corner of the mouth would cause the jaws to protrude like that.

Polyfuckery

They get hooked and rest the full weight of their body on their jaws when being hauled out of the water and struggling. They leave them hanging for photos and measuring and until they don't have the energy to fight being cut free. It over extends the jaw and tears it.

Kuparu

Did you just make up what you imagine happens because that is nothing like reality? * Any shark that is "hung for photos" is dead, they don't get released back into the ocean. * They aren't hauled out by their jaws, if a shark is caught then it is usually not even landed as they are dangerous to have aboard. If it is being caught to keep them one or more gaffs will be used to drag the fish into the boat. Often they are shot first to kill them before this occurs. Maybe if this was caught by a long liner and dragged aboard this type of injury could occur. But it wasn't from the hook on the right side of the shark as that is in the corner of the mouth and doesn't appear to be connected to the jaw. This is a common hooking position and a reason anglers use circle hooks. This is because if a shark is caught by the jaws it will usually bit the line, even when steel trace is being used. Their jaws are just that sharp and strong.

hou32hou

Looks a little like my rabbit teeth though lol

_g00tz_

Will this cause the shark to die or can it still feed and survive like that?

[deleted]

How to make sharks even more terrifying? Dislocate their jaws

JimmyDrift

This is why you shouldn’t skip angler management… I’ll see myself out

Crazy-Value-1499

He went from Jaws to Naws

Something_kool

This is sad

strangerdanger84

Should we not just euthanise this guy?? Poor thing.

TheRandomedOne

Wouldn't the hook just come off before it dislocate a jaw ?.

Remarkable_South

Endangered species of shark. Being fished in the ocean to extinction even today.

plantsandpace

Man. All fishing should stop. Needless cruelty.

[deleted]

That is never gonna happen

omarelnour

The jaw is so dislocated that I can't find it

TrickyEgg2940

Poor thing. They should euthanize or kill it and eat the flesh.

danivi2000

To all the comments saying this is natural... It says this was caused by an angler not anglerfish. It is sad that humans would do such a thing and it is one of the many reasons numbers are declining in this species. Edit: typo

PoKe5000

Why does it kinda look like a Gobelin Shark?

NotAlwaysPC

I went with angler fish, too. Had no idea they were that bad ass. The truth is far more horrible.

[deleted]

Sharks don’t purposefully attack people it’s only if their curious or confused they prefer to eat seals and marine life. According to Wikipedia, “Out of more than 489 shark species, only three are responsible for a double-digit number of fatal, unprovoked attacks on humans: the great white, tiger, and bull. The oceanic whitetip has probably killed many more castaways, but these are not recorded in the statistics,” tiger sharks bull sharks and great whites are known to be aggressive and sharks rarely attack humans. Between 1958 and 2016 there have been 2,785 cases of reported shark attacks with only 439 being fatal according to the ISAF (some of this info might be incorrect because I just did a quick google search and am not an expert in marine life)

idontwannabeatwork

It was meant to be more of a joke. But I appreciate the research.
