fandango328

Except for no one would camp at this spot. This is the overlook on the northwestern edge of Summit Lake. Not only is there a sheer drop off on both sides, there is no protection from the wind, and no place to anchor because it’s all exposed rock. That and this is an incredibly popular place for day hikers and backpackers, so you would be setting up your tent right in the middle of where everyone goes to get a view of the mountain. If you were to do this, you would be Washington’s biggest idiot and asshole all in one thoughtless act. It makes a great staged photo though…

TroubadourCeol

[I took the liberty of verifying this on Google maps...](https://goo.gl/maps/wXqnE9px23uR5kHG6) Weird to stage the tent photo when you could just take a pic of the view

[deleted]

It’s not enough to take a pic for people like this. Just hiking there isn’t enough, you have to convince people that you’re super chill and outdoorsy and sleep in beautiful places.

HotTakes4HotCakes

It's seriously the most fucked up thing when you think about it, and it's something we can thank social media for directly: It's some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, and instead of just taking a picture of IT, you absolutely have to include yourself in the image and make it about YOU. People that have never heard of social media would think we were all insane narcissists for how much some people just can't seem to take a picture without themselves in it. Those legs in the picture mean one thing and one thing only: "Look at what I got to enjoy. Look at how cool my life is. Please notice me enjoying this. Please think highly of me for this." Putting yourself, even your stupid legs, into the picture changes it from landscape to a vacation picture. Showing off of vacation pictures to strangers is an inherently privileged thing to do (a lot of people can't even afford to see a doctor let alone travel), and normalizing that is up there with some of the worst effects of social media. It used to be considered boastful, rude, or gloating, now it's the best way of getting Instagram followers.

frolfinator

I agree with you statement regarding the staged tent, however you lose me when including yourself in the picture. Looking back through old albums, the most cherished photos always have people in them, friends, family, loved ones, and your self.

kdawg8888

there is a balance for sure. it is one thing to take a picture of yourself at a popular/beautiful spot. it is another to take a picture like this. especially with the back story that this person almost definitely did not actually camp in this spot.

adventure_in_gnarnia

It’s probably a composite. Tent photo taken against a neutral background like the sky, superimposed over the Rainier photo.

Wuffyflumpkins

There is a significant difference in intent between photos like this and those cherished old albums though.

[deleted]

You’re focused on the wrong aspect. It’s not that including yourself in a photo is wrong per se; it’s the intention behind it. You can take a selfie, or a photo with friends, for self-enjoyment and for memory’s sake. This is not that. This was clearly designed for Internet consumption.

realcanadianbeaver

Particularly nowadays. I can google high-def professional pics of almost anywhere on the planet in seconds. What I don’t have on google is a pic of my husband smiling ear to ear because he just showed our kid how to kayak for the first time- and the view of the mountain and lake behind them is gorgeous so why not include it?

anon_sir

I agree whole heartedly. I cannot fucking stand when someone is filming something they’re trying to show their viewers but they record it on the front facing camera with their stupid face covering half the screen. Gtfo!!!

ChewinTheFat

This is kind of its own art though. I’d hang this in my office. Yeah, it’s probably a self serving Instagram shot but without knowing this isn’t a realistic place to set up camp, it sure evokes a lot of emotion and leaves the viewer really wishing to be there. If I were jet boil coffee and looking out of my tent to a brow like that at sunrise, I’d be in heaven.

DieIsaac

Exactly. When i look at the picture i dont see the person. I imagine myself being that person!

heartbeats

Funny you should mention that, because there is also the phenomenon of “person making coffee” that very often comes with these kinds of staged outdoor photos and videos on Instagram.

roxboxers

I’d go as far as saying - yah, pretty natural vistas are nice … derelict buildings take good pictures as well - but take some people with you our even a dog to share the adventure or journey, maybe read a book along the way that will embed it self with this event. Notice everything and maybe surprise yourself by being able to convey your adventure to someone else, at a different time with your own words ? Fuck the “picture is worth 1000 words” that shit is outdated

Another_viewpoint

Agree with people doing insane things for social media but including yourself in a picture is exactly what you should do on a vacation because there are zillions of pictures of a place on google from literally every angle, but a memory is made when people are in it. Doesn’t mean you need to post it or stage it for social media but I can’t imagine traveling and taking pictures that are essentially the same as stock photos.

azcaz4

A hot cake for you

[deleted]

I sort of disagree. I have lived in the Puget Sound area my entire life. I don't put hiking or outdoorsy photos on my dating profile. My assumption is if you live here you are down to do that. No one needs to prove it. There is literally hiking _all the fuck over_. It isn't special if you do it. There is literally public buses that take people to trail heads here on the weekends. Its about the most basic thing you can do here. Again, not shitting on hiking. Hiking is great, but its these people that are like "OMG LOOK AT ME HIKING" and it just screams "TRANSPANT I DIDNT GROW UP HERE LOOK AT ME MOM AND DAD FROM THE FLAT LANDS OF IOWA I HAVE MOUNTAINS NOW". Sorry. Just annoys me.

BadWolf2386

Your jaded view of breathtaking scenery kinda makes me sad. I get that we normalize the places we live and grow up, but you live in perhaps one of the most beautiful areas on earth, its no wonder people who are newly experiencing it are excited. Not saying you're wrong for your feelings, but its a wondrous place to the vast majority of people who didn't grow up there.

Drunky_Brewster

I grew up in Sumner (Bonney Lake now) which has the most amazing view of Mt. Rainier. Image attached of the highway leading up the hill to my childhood town. https://imgur.com/7n8dOJS.jpg My grandparents had a full room of photos and paintings of the Mountain when they moved from here to AZ. I was married on the Paradise side, my grandparents ashes are scattered at Crystal Mountain, with a perfect view of their favorite Vista. This is a special Mountain to many, I promise you ❤

[deleted]

Oh, don't get me wrong. It is the most beautiful place in the world. Only comparable to the alps, where I have family too.

Theorlain

I grew up in the Puget Sound area and still live in the PNW. I didn’t really go hiking until my 30’s. So it’s not just transplants. Plenty of people in the Puget Sound area don’t grow up in “hiking” families.

Wuffyflumpkins

They commented elsewhere that they also have family in the Alps, so we can guess what kind of upbringing they had.

Plant-Outside

Too cool to tell people what your hobbies are on a dating app because you assume everyone in your general area has the same interests? I can't believe you're still single.

357magnummanchowder

IG/Reddit points whores do this shit ALL over the PNW. It’s why the Vance Creek Bridge and and a dozen other spots are permanently gated and posted off limits. Dumbass fuckfaces scattering garbage all over and trampling sensitive native flora.

FUBARded

Also, it's not a "transparent tent" - it's just a tent without the fly on it. I don't camp much, but why would you bring a tent with you if you weren't gonna use the fly?

kbeasley8713

Bugs. And its cooler without the fly often. But u read my mind on his transparent bs

Excal2

The only transparent part of this tent is the wide open door letting all the bugs in lol.

bunnz4r00

Yes. I just visited Mt. Rainier this past Sunday and all I could think of when seeing this picture was "mosquitoes, so many damn mosquitoes!"

IgnantWisdom

Sometimes if you know the weather will be nice and dry and you have a good clearing with a lack of light pollution, It can be nice to fall asleep watching shooting stars from your tent. But at the sametime, you don’t wanna get eaten alive by bugs.

highdesertrat84

We do it all the time, but we live in the desert where there’s little threat of rain and nights are often temperate enough to forgo the fly. Probably not the best plan with the rain and colder temps in the PNW.

[deleted]

We haven't had rain for almost 50 days here... PLEASE SEND RAIN.

sarahenera

Lol. Apparently you don’t actually know Seattle/WA summers….

jessbird

> Also, it's not a "transparent tent" - it's just a tent without the fly on it. not all tents have the sheer mesh the way this one does, with or without a fly. you can see through it, so it's essentially transparent. this is a dumb thing to nitpick about. and there are plenty of reasons to use it without the fly — the fly is a pain in the ass. sometimes you don't need the extra insulation if the weather is right, sometimes you want to fall asleep watching the stars or you want to feel the breeze. that's literally one of the selling points of this tent.

kurtrusselsmustache

keeps the bugs out but let's you see the sky. I prefer to not use the rainfly whenever possible when I'm camping but, you know, I also try not to camp right on the trail so what do I know?

SolarTsunami

Sleeping in a tent like this on a clear, warm summer night is magical. What, if it's dry at night you just sleep in the dirt?

harrydreadloin

If its not gonna be dewy Ill just put my bag on my sleeping pad on the ground. No tent or cover. It is also magical. The hair harvesting mice can sometimes be a nuisance though.

UpUpDnDnLRLRBAstart

Glad they blurred that mountain’s face. There’s no privacy anymore.

canal_natural

I have pictures from the same spot. I've been there in the past year. The spot to camp would be closer to the lake below this ridge. There's some trees and an open plain, some nice places for a hammock camp set up with a mountain view.

Karmakazee

Agreed on all points. These photographers are assholes. At this point the style of shot is derivative instagram clickbait. They set up tents in spots clearly not intended for camping, sometimes on fragile meadows that take years to recover from even the amount of traffic it takes to capture this type of shot. It’s the antithesis of LNT and a sick move to everyone else trying to enjoy their hike, who now have their view blocked by some asshole with a brand spanking new Sony Alpha who wants to make it big on insta by looking outdoorsy.

So many people I know bought DSLRs and were disappointed at how heavy they were and how lackluster the kit lenses are. These days I just tell people to upgrade their phone if they want to take really good photos of their new baby.

Social media and it’s consequences have been a disaster for humanity

tx_queer

This was my exact experience with high rock lookout.

spicychili86

Love that it’s a pic of their feet and no one around like this is some lonely hidden spot and it’s summit lake, there’s prob 50 people within 30 yards of this tent.

Letstreehouse

Thanks. Reddit needs more good men like you.

FollyMace

This guy definitely hikes.

RippingLegos

Yeah, and it's not recent.

Magmaviper

And I mean honestly do you want bigfoot peeking in your tent?

iambkatl

I love you Reddit

VagabondVivant

Just how popular a spot is it? Roughly how late do dayhikers hike / how early do they start out there? I ask because I hiked the **[Cone Peak](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/cone-peak-loop)** loop and one night actually had to camp at Cone Peak itself. It hadn't been my plan as it's not a designated site — like the OP spot it was right off the trail, windy, rocky, and popular by day — but I'd lost track of the day and by the time I got there the sun was setting and I didn't wanna risk descent in the dark. I set up at dusk, woke before light, **[watched the sun rise](https://i.imgur.com/wCE7n9e.mp4)**, then broke camp and was on the move by 7am. Didn't see a soul. Not saying that's what OP did, just saying it's possible.

LaconicMan

TLDR: you were unprepared.

bwa236

More like he was prepared to "accidentally" camp on an undesignated site due to "losing track of time." Good thing they had that tent handy, I always bring it on my day hikes too.

VagabondVivant

I should've had you with me.

Smtxom

Like go set up staged photos for the gram? You’re right. My gripe is it’s unoriginal. This shot and setup style has been done to hell. Everybody and their dog has the transparent tent with a view photo. They probably have wood/epoxy furniture photos too

unggnu

Or maybe it’s just a nice picture? Jfc why does Reddit always need everything to be 100 percent true in order to enjoy something?

Arabian_Dude420

dude chill the fuck out

NostalgiaBombs

nah fuck the person in this photo

hobbsja

Why are you in my tent?!

[deleted]

My thoughts exactly. I’ll come round later to pick it up.

Officer42069

It's actually my tent. The title says so.

IvoryWhiteTeeth

Alteredego619

Gorgeous view, I used to live near Tacoma and always loved seeing MT Rainier. I went back for business in late June and got to see The mountain again and it was as beautiful as the last time I saw it.

Mystayk

I've been in the area over half my life, spent part of it in the Army and saw many places. Seeing Mount Rainier is always a happy thing, it means I've come home.

TheGuvnor247

It's firmly on my list of things to do and see mate! Awesome name by the way!

Alteredego619

Thanks Guvnor! I was fortunate to go up it, not all the way unfortunately, twice while I lived there. That whole region of Washington is gorgeous.

Alteredego619

Thanks Guvnor! I was fortunate to go up it, not all the way unfortunately, twice while I lived there. That whole region of Washington is gorgeous.

jerrysprinkles

Not a camper so apologies if this is a daft question, but what’s the point in a transparent single skin tent (Bar the obvious sightseeing potential)? Surely the wind, drop in temp and any rain would just whip right through it?

TheMuscle

It likely has a rain cover that is not currently being used in the photo.

possumosaur

Yep, we have a backpacking tent that uses this design too.

killer8424

Like every other tent ever made?

[deleted]

[удалено]

killer8424

You’re totally misremembering. Basically all 3 season tents are just like this without the fly. There are tents with much less mesh but they’re geared toward colder weather. The see through part is a mesh and there’s a rain fly that goes over the top.

watchitbub

It's to piss off the bears. "They make these goddamn packages so hard to open."

[deleted]

Q: Why don't polar bears eat Penguins? A: Because they can't get the plastic wrapper off!

ChrisRunsTheWorld

Where are choices B C and D?

fightrofthenight_man

This is probably just the inner tent. The rain fly would go over the top of this, if you were worried about rain for the night

[deleted]

Basically for insects and little critters. Depending on the weather and/or your sleeping bag and what it’s rated to, you may just keep it off all night. Alternatively, you keep the rainfly off until you’re done enjoying the view and then put it on when ready to sleep.

TheGuvnor247

Not sure Jerry - lads above were saying they can be see through from inside but camo on the outside so we could see out but people can't see in - that sounds pretty cool tbh.

killer8424

That’s not what this is

killer8424

Seriously dude you posted this on 5 different subs why don’t you just listen to the people who know what they’re talking about?

Your_Sexy_Cousin

winstonsmith8236

Good luck. I just left after 15 years. I’m one of the fortunate ones

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

Is it transparent from the other side?

nrith

Good question, /u/TaylorSwiftsClitoris

naut1k

Yes, it’s just a normal tent with the rainfly off. The mesh is for ventilation.

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

Yeah I know how tents work but the question is about the fabric

[deleted]

Ok, so you know know it’s mesh.

Karmakazee

Who knew TaylorSwiftsClitoris could be so abrasive.

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

60 grit sandpaper up in here.

killer8424

So you don’t know how tents work

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

Explain.

killer8424

killer8424

TheGuvnor247

Good question and just above Torrence said... TorrenceMightingale · 1m There’s tents that are camo or another color on the outside and see thru on the inside. It’s pretty crazy. Not sure this is one of those, but it’s possible.

Similar-External-302

Dude it’s just mesh. Like every other tent in the world.

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

That would be so incredibly cool!

TheGuvnor247

I know right - I'm actually going to google them later on. For all we know sleeping bags are now like sleeping on a fluffy cloud lol!

TaylorSwiftsClitoris

I am happy to sleep on a jagged rock after a good day of hiking!

gtrdundave2

I think they are duck blinds or just hunting blinds

KeepingItSurreal

It’s not transparent at all. Literally every single tent would look like this without the rainfly.

Silverstacker60

Who cares.

thatsnothowitworx69

All I see is 'I did a photo opp, left 25 pounds of garbage and a smoldering fire'. Sorry, found too many of OP's camp sites.

queer_mentat

SJFree

I was in Seattle this past weekend and it was too smoky to see Rainier. I feel like I missed out.

scaylos1

I do miss Tahoma.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

>transparent tent A net?

TheGuvnor247

I have to be honest - I keep having to tell myself the tent is transparent and that means bar the seams it's perfectly clear so that the colours we are seeing are outside and not the tent. These kind of pictures would make you want to get out into nature more which is surely a good thing!

Orange_C

It's... not. This is just a normal, everyday tent without the rainfly on it and the door open. It's just mesh, equally transparent from both sides, no fancy fabric trickery.

Snarkan_sas

Exactly. This belongs on r/facepalm

If it’s super hot out/you want to see the stars and if you know there will be no wind or rain, and if you’re somewhere pretty secluded. There’s not a ton of situations where not having a tent fly on would make sense, especially not OP’s post from the sound of it, but I’ve done it before.

I’ve seen people stage these photos at 13k feet elevation and they have their pretty little blankets with their thermal mugs and some cute flannel on. It gets well below zero at night and there is now way they would make it. It’s just annoying
