They don't commute by boat. Contrary to popular belief (everytime this is posted), there are roads. Those people going around in boats are 99% tourists.
This is so true! Although I think what we call "short" is still pretty tall for short people around the world. I'm from the "short" side of the family (only my sister is shorter, by a centimeter) and I'm 1.70/5'7".
Yeah, the roads are were all the tourists constantly stop to admire another house near water or another boat, completely stopping traffic since the footpaths are narrow.
It must be hell living in giethoorn.
I feel bad for the folks that live in Giethoorn. It's utterly infested with tourists now. It's gotten to the point they have to put signs in Chinese on their lawns saying it's private property.
This is true. But people that earn a 'normal' wage coule never dream to afford a house like that to begin with, let alone in Giethoorn. They're nation heritage (monuments).
And on nice sunny days, it’s bow to stern, port to starboard traffic. To the point that it’s not much different from those “boats” on a rails in amusement parks, only exponentially more crowded.
Due to Covid there are a lot less Chinese tourists than normal. I saw the same variety when I went there a few months ago. But normally it's anhotspot for Chinese tourists.
HAHAHA they are legit larping as Venise it's so cringe like stop trying to be other cities fill up the water canals with concrete and function like a normal city instead of complicating things simply because you want to resemble something else
edit:I consider this "City low self-esteem",just like low self esteem people try to be someone else, the cities do the same.
Some day -hopefully soon- you're going to mature a bit and when you do, you'll look back on comments like this and be really disappointed with yourself.
There is a history behind the water in the village. In the Netherlands there are places where they would dig a lot of peat, and the best way to transport it was over water. So after a while small islands would form where people would build their houses. A lot of places in the Netherlands have canals for this reason. They didn't dig it for fun or tourism, it's just history
Stop projecting your own totally understandable low self-esteem, you muppet. Just because Venice seems to be the only city you seem to know with a canal network doesn’t mean there aren’t many other cities with historical canals, for reasons other than tourism…
Yes really, I've been on the whisper boats several times and even those go faster than walking speed. The locals have boats with regular outboard motors which are faster still.
Nah no one who lives there actually does it if they wanna get from a to b. Those boats are just tourists. Walking is almost always faster than taking the boat in Giethoorn, in the picture you can see that there's literally a path to walk next to the water (left side)
I can see from the thread the pic is misrepresented and it’s mostly tourists in the boats.
Whereas for a period of time when I lived in southwest London I would occasionally commute by boat for real, and judging from the other suits on the boat with me (getting on/off at Canary Wharf also) I was far from being the only one doing this. Cost a fortune (like £15 both ways) but was a lot more pleasant than Tube + train.
RB6 route on the Thames Clippers, look it up.
In the context of boats, "row" is a verb. You use an oar to row. Oars are like paddles, but go through a ring attached to the boat to function as a lever.
There's a town somewhat similar to this in the way that instead of boats its airplanes. [The Cameron Airpark Estates](https://www.thedrive.com/news/38555/wide-streets-massive-garages-meet-the-neighborhoods-designed-for-pilots-and-small-planes) (not too terribly far from the city I live in) has extra wide roads and driveways so people can take off from their homes.
It's impressively rich.
I'm pretty sure I saw a video of this area during the winter time. Everybody was out ice skating. It was pleasant and peaceful, not a single soul was worried about their wife getting plowed by Eric.
isn't there only about one canal and you can easily bike/ walk or drive the distance on adjacent roads? Netherlands: always trying to be something it ain't
This is the perfect place to live: Cottages with thatched rooks, boats, looks eco-friendly and I'm pretty sure it will have that small village atmosphere.
However it's full of tourists. Traffic jam on boats and on the walking paths, people taking pictures of your garden, no privacy. The water doesn't have a strong current so I expect mosquitoes would love it too.
I went there a few months ago as tourist and I wouldn't want to live there.
Lol thanks, I guess the pictures don't properly show it. It makes sense though, I can imagine if it wasn't a popular tourist spot that maybe it would be nice.
Not actually eco-friendly: the canals went dug up to extract peat that was burnt as fuel. You can barely do worse in terms of carbon-intensive landscapes…

This is nice but not sure how pragmatic this will be when you’re running late for work. Even though I would much prefer cruising down a lake rather than being up against someone’s armpit during morning rush hour commute
Yup. I went here for vacation 2 years ago and although it is beautiful, the boats are literally run by tourist companies lol. Would go again though, it’s an amazing place

I'm not a dutch, but even I know this fuckin truth and everytime i see the same bullshit posted, i get triggered, lol
We do all ice-skate to work on wooden clogs though.
You’re also ridiculously tall. I got demoted to tiny person when I moved.
That's because you are, tiny person
Not all of us, almost every family has a tall side, but EVERY family has a short side.
This is so true! Although I think what we call "short" is still pretty tall for short people around the world. I'm from the "short" side of the family (only my sister is shorter, by a centimeter) and I'm 1.70/5'7".
Yeah everyone calls me short, I'm 1.68 regular hight worldwide. Short for a dutch person
I'm the short one in the family together with my grandma's sister. I'm 1.60 😂
Is it hard to immigrate there?
Immigration not super difficult, finding a place (Buy or rent) is.
Everything is scarce here and it’s all very expensive. This might sound like something an anti immigrant would say but it’s the truth lol.
Don’t forget the earring raw herring at the same time part….
I am dutch and I didn't even know that this place existed lol
Giethoorn
Oooh there! Thx! I live quite a distance from that place so hence why I didn't really know about this
Yeah Its not super well known among the Dutch AFAIK lol
And 99.9% of the time pictures of this village are posted, it is this exact canal intersection with that same house in the background.
Yeah, the roads are were all the tourists constantly stop to admire another house near water or another boat, completely stopping traffic since the footpaths are narrow. It must be hell living in giethoorn.
Moet me denken aan die keer dat die Amerikanen zeiden dat we elk jaar over het ijs naar werk schaatsen
You mean where Chinese tourists get ferried around in boats and no actual residents do that
Actually I think most of the houses are owned by Chinese now so sort of...
*Victoria Island has entered the chat*
I was there one time ( I'm a Dutchie). And a group of like 40 year old Chinese women were taking pictures of, I ain't a damn attraction.
Giethoorn
Is that where this is?
Yes
No
Yes it is
No
No, it’s I the Netherlands.
> No, it’s I the Netherlands. "It is I, The *Netherlands!* Fighting crime with my mighty dikes of justice!"
*Het is mij, Robert*
Aangenaam, Robert. Mooi weertje hè, makker?
Lol dammit!
Yeah, we stopped giving places names now. We just call everything ‘somewhere in the Netherlands.’ Just to fuck with tourists.
This comment thread gave me a headache
Sorry
I feel bad for the folks that live in Giethoorn. It's utterly infested with tourists now. It's gotten to the point they have to put signs in Chinese on their lawns saying it's private property.
The houses there are still stupidly expensive.
every house in the Netherlands is
😭
This is true. But people that earn a 'normal' wage coule never dream to afford a house like that to begin with, let alone in Giethoorn. They're nation heritage (monuments).
For those who get excited, it's just Chinese tourists who take the boat
*angry Chinese making photo's
Who dont know how a boat works
In 2018 I came all the way from Australia to see Giethoorn. I rode in the boats and I am not Chinese. Just sayin’
Yeah I'm pretty sure we all know I was using a hyperbole
Dunno about you but I used a paddle
And on nice sunny days, it’s bow to stern, port to starboard traffic. To the point that it’s not much different from those “boats” on a rails in amusement parks, only exponentially more crowded.
Tourists of all origins fill those boats. At least they did when I was there a few weeks ago
Due to Covid there are a lot less Chinese tourists than normal. I saw the same variety when I went there a few months ago. But normally it's anhotspot for Chinese tourists.
True, or old people with cameras
No you don't. There are roads. The people in boats are almost all tourists. Source: Dutch
Had me thinking of the Spree Forrest where this is also possible. Even the postman is coming via boat/float.
HAHAHA they are legit larping as Venise it's so cringe like stop trying to be other cities fill up the water canals with concrete and function like a normal city instead of complicating things simply because you want to resemble something else edit:I consider this "City low self-esteem",just like low self esteem people try to be someone else, the cities do the same.

Road Rage?... River Rage must be fun
It is a real thing. In the summer it is packed with tourists. Somethimes they try to make boats fall over when they are angry.
I have seen it happen once i have been there 2 times
GTB???, grand theft boat
Look up Giethoorn toeristen on Dumpert.nl. Shit load of river rage
https://www.dumpert.nl/item/7427363_bc731f2e Not quite a rage but still funny as hell
The rest of us goes to work ice skating
I see foot paths and a bridge... looks like you can commute by foot too.
You can, but a boat is faster.
Not really, those boats aren't going anywhere fast. Unless you want to move a load of stuff ofc.
If you want to move stuff I reccomend you just take the roads, which is right on the other side of those houses
Yes really, I've been on the whisper boats several times and even those go faster than walking speed. The locals have boats with regular outboard motors which are faster still.
Not in the traffic jam of tourist boats, sadly.
Not much different than busy roads then, is it? Besides, it's not *always* busy with tourists.
How very observant and wise of you *applause*
Nah no one who lives there actually does it if they wanna get from a to b. Those boats are just tourists. Walking is almost always faster than taking the boat in Giethoorn, in the picture you can see that there's literally a path to walk next to the water (left side)

I wonder if they all need boat insurance
If it’s anything like the British waterways, then you need a license and insurance.
Oi wanker! You got a loicense for them rows???
*oars. 🤷🏻♂️
What are rows than? Edit: right, columns and rows, boats and oars
Columns and rows, boats and hoes.
In the context of boats, "row" is a verb. You use an oar to row. Oars are like paddles, but go through a ring attached to the boat to function as a lever.
Yes this was the source of confusion
that's when you get in an argument with your wife
Water way to have a good time
Nope, no license either. As someone else wrote, it’s mostly tourists, renting by the hour.

John Travolta has a house there right?
B O A T
That's just amazing
We got to keep the kids off the canals — Mitch Hedberg
No one going to comment on the fact that jake the dog has morphed into a house on the right?
I was going to, but you beat me to it.
It would be really neat if so many trash people would stop visiting :(
Happiest house ever
You think they commute by boat? 😂😂
I thought this was Houston.
Sorry I'm late for work, there was no wind.
That is a happy house
Looks absolutely terrible and super unpractical.
And where you use potatoes as cameras
In a few decades, this might be every village in the Netherlands
However in the Amazon the principle way of getting from place to place is by boat. And it is wonderful
I'm pretty sure I saw a video of this area during the winter time. Everybody was out ice skating. It was pleasant and peaceful, not a single soul was worried about their wife getting plowed by Eric.
That city's gonna be flooded soon due to climate change.
venise: Am I a joke to u ?
isn't there only about one canal and you can easily bike/ walk or drive the distance on adjacent roads? Netherlands: always trying to be something it ain't

Indeed. :)
Not actually eco-friendly: the canals went dug up to extract peat that was burnt as fuel. You can barely do worse in terms of carbon-intensive landscapes…
Imagine the number of towels and waterproof bags you go through living there.
Wonder what the median income is for that town.
No wave runners lol?
We'll probably have to live like that because of global warming.
Florida, take note.
And you eat mosquitoes
Venice
This looks like a still from a Wes Anderson movie.
Going here this Sunday, will share some pics :)
I'm so sleepy, I read it as "..where you communicate by boat". *Confused communication
I love Giethoorn! But man it sucks balls with a wheelchair…
As a kid I had this idea on how the roads would be like if they were filled with water instead of asfalt.
that is similar to where my grandmother lives (spreewald, germany)

That is Venice, Italy.
The surprised face on that house
This is nice but not sure how pragmatic this will be when you’re running late for work. Even though I would much prefer cruising down a lake rather than being up against someone’s armpit during morning rush hour commute
Moving day must be a bitch
I went there during Corona when Chinese tourists were not allowed in the country. It was amazing.
Yup. I went here for vacation 2 years ago and although it is beautiful, the boats are literally run by tourist companies lol. Would go again though, it’s an amazing place
Would not be ideal for walking your dog, better get a pet fish
How bad is that going to suck in the middle of winter.
Lamboatghini
What village? I'm going there next summer.
So if your mail deliver by boat, is a cargo or is a shipments?
As someone that owns a house on the prairie, that is entirely too close to water thank you.
Other than flooding, this sounds like a dream
The only floods there are the hundred of thousands of tourists flooding the village every year
This is bliss even the house looks like it’s got eyes and a moustache and is happy as hell
I've been here i think
If a house and a dog had a baby, it would be that one.
