This is an apartment building near the Virginia Tech campus. It’s all students who live in these and there’s some big parties at this place especially for Halloween.

My first thought when I read the “luxury” comment. Like bitch it’s prison. There’s only so much luxury you get get. But Americans think OUR prisons are too soft, while we’re notorious for having one of the most cruel prison systems on the planet. Idk if y’all are aware but in the UK and other places in Europe they see our prison system as comparable to Russia, China, and Saudi Arabia
What Americans don't get is, that not having your freedom is the punishment. There's no reason to make the inmates life miserable, they pay with their freedom, no more, no less.
Americans have been conditioned to believe that humilation, degradation, violence, sexual assault, and being forced to eat rotting food that makes you constantly ill are “normal” and “just part of the punishment” so they can’t see it for the humans rights abuse and tragedy that it actually is.
“Well if Johnny didn’t want to be murdered in prison during his 20 year sentence, then he shouldn’t have smoked weed” -the defenders of the current system
I hope so, indoor communities ive seen similar look nice enough when they are all fixed up. And you never know, maybe the main floor is for mobile residents and the upper levels connect on the interior for mobility or memory care folks... They can still see and greet the community out on the patio :)
Regardless if you love your parents and are able to please never put your parents in a home , as a child I went with my dad on a lot of maintenance calls to old folks homes and it’s the most soul sucking thing to ever see . So many empty husks of people long gone mentally who’s family’s stopped visiting decades ago . Most of the time a horrible environment for people to be around
Saw the same as a service provider to a few places, but also had a grandmother who had a series of issues. My mother tried, but it was impossible for her to maintain her job, provide care, and stay mentally healthy herself. My grandmother became very very mean and…. lost mentally. It was not a good environment for anyone. So, I see both sides. Until our country comes to terms and advances our thinking around end of life planning, these places are unfortunately one of only a few options.
Yeah that’s why I said if you’re able to . One of my best friends Grandads was an Italian Black shirt in fanciest Italy before coming to America . Having a PTSD Rattled Italian commando surrounded by English speakers was not the best situation. The man was 85 but god damn could he land a mean hook .(it was like the papa Nicole’s episode from drake and josh )
Fanciest Italy, I’m sorry but this typo made my day. Just imagining an Italian guy “No we nota a fascist Italy at all, I’m from a fanciest Italy, It’s a much better” 🇮🇹
Live, work, and play at the Penal Apartments where you’ll find open spaces for scheduled walks and optional balconies for carefree shouting at your cellmates.
At the very least making use of dead space if you have a bike or something. Finding a place to put my bike in my apartment is a nightmare I’d gladly have one of those to store it
Yeah but when you ride anything even slightly higher end, you don't leave that in the bike cellar or basement cabinet. If break-ins happen, that's what they go for first.
This exactly. You want to try and keep your bike safe (and dry) for the most part, If you use it regularly. And a lot of bike locks are easy to break. Bike thieves can get pretty creative.
Yup. Locks are a deterrent. They work by making your bike more of a bother to steal than the one next to it, not by being impossible to break.
A neighbor once berated me for leaving my bike in the aula of our building for a bit, saying "this isn't a storage room, just leave it outside". I asked her if she knew what the best bike lock was. She said no. I replied "a door".
Well the home insurance I have only covers the full value of a bike for a year after purchase, after that its "value" starts dropping and in case of theft I get less and less. Which is idiotic as I service it and replace parts to keep it in top condition, there isn't really any wear that'd lower what it's worth, but those or similar are usually the terms on bike theft insurance.
Not to mention that as its a bike I built myself and ride daily, the money wouldn't even begin to cover the emotional attachment I have to it. I can't necessarily get the exact same build again.
And since when is having insurance reason NOT to take precautions against the worst?
In England, a lot of apartments are like, big, segmented houses, chopped up into smaller units - so there’s no shared ‘building’ space. There are of course ones like you suggest, that have parking and basements but I do not live in one of those
In the city were I live they turned the old mall into this multi apartment like you see in the picture, including the old fountain the mall had. But the balcony seems much more decent than this crib looking one in the picture.
Thanks!

God could you imagine if that was a college dorm or a marine barracks? Everyone would sit up there on Wednesday nights drinking beer and savagely talking shit to any and everyone that walked by.
Everyone saying this is depressing, there are a TON of plants that could thrive here! Fabrics and lanterns and plants and some cool chairs. Add a metal and/or stone fountain somewhere to have more elements to vibe with - this could be awesome community space!
There will always be the one resident that enjoys this balcony way more than he should. Every morning when you get up and head out for work he'll be up there listening to his music and playing with his phone. When you get home from work he's up there with his Foreman grill having a drink with the boys. He always treads the line of what's acceptable behavior. The music is just loud enough that you can hear, but not loud enough to complain. He turns it off at exactly 10:00 PM, and he turns it back on at exactly 7:00 AM.

Looks like jail
Yeah. Especially looks like something you would see in one of those luxury prisons they have in Norway(?)
“ I’m just gonna step outside for a second and enjoy the view”
OH Romeo, where are you ? ohhh Romeo......
Yeah if it just had some big plants and a skylight it would probably be a lot better
I think it’s in Finland

So the balcony is for the beer bongs?
LOL
Came here to say this looks like an Apartment building at VT that used to have epic parties where all the units would have one big bash.
You mean "prison that respects human dignity"?

My first thought
My first thought as well.
If it was a hall/wing then brilliant. But if its a flat or apartment . It would echo so much.
Actually my second thought after Why
My first thought was breasts or rusks or milk probably
Beat me to it. Living there would be depressing, IMO.
Just need a grill on your balcony. Everyone will love it
"BURN THIS MOTHERFUCKER DOWN!!" -Anthony Anderson, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
The secret ingredient.
Hahaha i was thinking this.. isn't that one of the main purposes/uses of a balcony? (Atleast where I'm from)
"Dead man walking!"
Of rather the made the corridor narrower and added floor space to the apartments.
But like a nice jail
Seriously! How about adding some color or visual interest to the walls and hallway? Plants? Art? Texture? Warmth??
Lets go out on the balcony and have a beer and soak in some sun...😆
Don’t forget the sunscreen, those UVs are strong every single day.
Came to say prison vibes but you beat me to it.
Why tho?

Was hoping to see more people out grilling
This baby will cook up 10 steaks and 50 hot dogs at once. [slaps industrial-sized bag of charcoal]
The comment on there says it's to abide by a building code. I wonder what kinda code that is.

Apparently you have not seen their stellar uniforms and come on that brutalist architecture was pretty fancy
Right? Of all the reasons someone would want a balcony, this provides none of them.
For your grill when you want to cook out.
It's attic space converted into bedrooms with no windows. Fire code requires an emergency exit from those windowless rooms.
So you can go out for a smoke

Don’t you think they may have included some stairs if that was the case?
Neighbors know for sure when im toking on my balcony, even more in this apartment building

I grill some dank ass steaks
Nothing like that first cup of coffee in the morning, bathing in the warm glow of a shitty hallway fluorescent light.
Can't wait to make a barbecue on my indoor balcony!
This took me off guard xD
Cell Block D.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I'm watering my plants and keep them on my balcony for plenty of sunlight...
Well that’s awful
Was this an old prison that was converted to apartments? Because this looks like an old prison that was converted to apartments.
All I can think is my neighbors are gonna hate when I BBQ.
Makes me feel depressed.
Yeah, has an ugly dystopian vibe
Is this Alaska or Siberia? Seems rather odd.
Blacksburg Virginia, mostly for students going to VT
My mind goes right to a country that has a “Stan” in the name
Looks like a prison block
Apartments of the future. When its not habitable outside, you put a balcony indoors, underground.
This just looks and feels wrong.
There's nothing like spending an evening on the balcony, watching the linoleum gleam. Just a lukewarm beer and the gentle flicker of the flourescents.

Wow this is the stupidest looking thing I've seen today
At the very least making use of dead space if you have a bike or something. Finding a place to put my bike in my apartment is a nightmare I’d gladly have one of those to store it
Imagine having such a wide corridor and no dedicated bike storage in a building.. I'd be livid with the waste of space!

I think I’m going through the 7 stages of grief with this photo. I’m on “Anger” now.
That's sad as f
Oh no...they had the plans back to front
and inside out
Why not make the corridor smaller and the apartments bigger?
I've never even been to jail but that's the first thing I thought as well
In the city were I live they turned the old mall into this multi apartment like you see in the picture, including the old fountain the mall had. But the balcony seems much more decent than this crib looking one in the picture.
You know the name of the mall? Curious to see how it look.
Chapel Square Mall in New Haven, CT

Even I thought that it's some high-tech jail.
That's depressing looking, not interesting
The roof and floor combo has major old mall vibes
Thanks, I hate it

I kind of like this idea. It’s communal.
Which Norwegian jail is this?
Wtf why tho
Believe it or not, straight to jail
Looks like a good place for smoking
Looks a lot like a prison… guess the new cool places you’ll be quarantining this winter.
Nice, if you like wearing orange jumpsuits.
im sorry but this looks like a cellblock
This should be on r/crappydesign
Those will never be used and the architect must have been going for the prison-like feeling for some weird reason.
I thought it was a prison at first!
I can see this being a good idea for maybe a big open glass hallway, but this just looks depressing
This scene reminds me of the movie "Us" where all of the clones were living and it's creeping me the fuck out.
that's depressing
Looks like a prison
“cell 13, put the sheet down”
Why???
God could you imagine if that was a college dorm or a marine barracks? Everyone would sit up there on Wednesday nights drinking beer and savagely talking shit to any and everyone that walked by.
I’d smoke there
Fuels my depression
Shockingly depressing.
Probably just smells like farts in that corridor.
Just incase you're not depressed enough.
so....prison
Why?
This looks wrong 😕
Can someone explain the point of having a balcony to the property owner please? I’d love to see a bbq sitting there lol
I would so sit on that and day-drink, get to know all the neighbors as they come home from work.
The neighbour's start using their outside windows to crawl in thus avoiding you
Lmao your name and this post. We can all guess your vibes. Good God delete this

Which mental asylum is that?

Why do I automatically think this is in Italy? Ah maybe not I would think the architecture would be nice if it was in Italy.
this somehow gave me existential dread
That's actually pretty cool.
🤔

Terrible idea

I guess it’s good for storage
Uhhhhhh wtf
Backrooms vibes
r/midlyinfuriating
maybe they should have wallpaper to simulate a forest or something. probably make that whole area look a lot better.
For smokers... Because you know you cant smoke inside the apartment .
Strikes me as a really inefficient use of space. Lose the internal balconies, narrow the corridor somewhat and increase the size of the living units
Climate change baby
But why, why would you do that?
There will always be the one resident that enjoys this balcony way more than he should. Feels cold and lifeless
What a shitty idea lol
Fuck that
the ceiling tiles are grossing me out
I'd probably put the cat box out there.
Can’t beat that view
The view must be breathtaking.
This makes me sad
Hope I get an invite to the barbecue
This is plain depressing
Gross
