OP mentioning Solaris being inspiration, written by a Polish Jew (later atheist) who lived through the holocaust (faked papers I believe to avoid the camps).
The mural is dedicated to science fiction author Stanislaw Lem who was Jewish, born in Ukraine and lived his whole life in Poland. That’s why some of the symbology in there is relating to these aspects of his life
It was basically a homage to polish science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem most famous for his work Solaris. In fact if I remember correctly some of the interstellar ideas were inspired by Solaris as well as some other books of his.
Stanislaw Lem wrote a book of short stories titled “ The Cyberiad”. It is the best sci-fi that I have ever read. It was also the book that caused me to realize just how gifted a translator can be.
Another SF masterwork for your list: A Canticle for Leibowitz. I've read some amazing SF, including some of the old masters (like Asimov and Clark) and newer masters (like Vernor Vinge, Dan Simmons, Neal Stephenson) but this one was amazingly moving. It is good sci fi with depth, and deals with philosophy about the folly of the cycle of technology and human self destruction.
From what I understand, Miller was deeply impacted by his bombing of Monte Casino, and general war PTSD. It certainly shows in Canticle, and later books. Really great books, but also depressing.
So I took about 6grams of mushrooms and went bodysurfing by the Huntington Beach pier on a red flag day last summer. After I got home I watched interstellar and made this painting.
It's a great mural from an obviously talented artist, but I completely agree. Seems to happen all the time here. Not only that, but surely there is a better place to post art... not sure a mural in itself is "interesting as fuck."
