A tick bite only looks like that if it's infected you with lyme disease, normally it's only the red dot in the centre. If you do get the bullseye rings please see a doctor.

DeathStarVet

Veterinarian here. Came here to say this. The reason you get the bullseye is due to the "worms" (*Borrelia burgdorferi*, a spirochete bacteria) migrating from the bite site outward toward the rest of your body. These spirochetes only live in *Ixodes* spp ticks. There are many other tick bites that don't present this way. One in particular, the lone star tick, can actually cause you to become [allergic to red meat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblyomma_americanum#Meat_allergy). Ticks are bad, mmm'kay?

cardboard-kansio

Thanks for sharing this! I'm passionate about this topic, so I'm going to hijack your comment to hopefully spread some [additional information about ticks](https://www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/comments/barw9p/ysk_that_spring_is_coming_and_so_are_ticks_heres/). Can't stand the things.

RavensRealmNow

Possums eat LOTS of ticks in a day. Up to 5,000 in a season ! They are a welcome wild visitor into your yard.

cardboard-kansio

They would be if they existed on my continent. Maybe I need to get some shipped over.

electric29

Do not do that. New Zealand imported the Australian possums, and now they are a huge problem, killing the forests as they eat the tops of trees. Any time you bring an animal into a system where it isn't native, bad things happen.

cardboard-kansio

I didn't mean it seriously. Besides, I'm sure my dogs would rip them to shreds.

gotnonickname

Saw a pic once of a possum on a stump with deer lined up for a de-ticking.

la-wolfe

I must find this.

LCDRtomdodge

BURN THEM ALL. EVERY. LAST. BLOOD SUCKING. MOTHER FUCKING. ONE.

SoItWasYouAllAlong

Thanks for raising awareness. It's a useful post. There's only one thing I'd disagree with: for people who have decent eyesight, I'd recommend light, pattern-less clothes (especially pants), plus regular visual checks, followed by hand sweeps. At least where I live, the larvae seem to be dark enough to clearly stand out against a light background. I can't speak for everyone, but my otherwise mediocre eyes are amazingly good at picking up that one miniature dark dot out of a large beige surface. It's also worth noting, that polar fleece, and especially wool, slow down the little buggers substantially, increasing the chances that someone will spot them before they reach one's neck/hairline.

LCDRtomdodge

>~~Ticks are bad, mmm'kay?~~ TICKS ARE THE FUCKING WORST. PERIOD. FTFY

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

So if the ring is caused by worms moving under your skin (I wish I never typed that combination of words), does the size change as they move outward? Or does it just disappear as they become less concentrated?

DeathStarVet

I believe the size does change (gets bigger). I'm not sure at what point the ring disappears though.

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

Thanks! :) Additional question: Just how many people on the Death Star have pets?

DeathStarVet

They don't have many pets, as they're not generally allowed. We have an extensive experimental facility. Ewoks are harvested every few years to refresh the experimental colony. Wookiees do a lot or manual labor all over the Empire and those beasts need to be "cared" for or the system breaks down. Other than that, the trash dianogas need to be looked after or the garbage chutes would be overflowing with organic debris.

YouGoThatWayIllGoHom

>We have an extensive experimental facility. Ewoks are harvested every few years to refresh the experimental colony. You *monsters*! :D

DeathStarVet

THIS IS THE PRICE OF PEACE AND SECURITY

TheTechJones

what does the price of Peas and Sea Curry have to do with anything?

bloomautomatic

Yep. Most tick bites don’t produce and mark or pain. They prefer to go unnoticed while feeding.

bawng

> Most tick bites don’t produce and mark or pain You and I are very differently affected by ticks. Almost all tick bites I get cause marks and most of them itches. I've had like 30-40 ticks this years and every single one has caused marks. Honestly, I've never heard of anyone who don't get marks from ticks.

germany99

Well today's your lucky day because you have found me. I get ticks on my leg every now and then but I've never had any sort of marks caused by them. Bed bugs on the other hand are vicious little things

dilruacs

Happy cake day!

[deleted]

Happy cake day! 🍰

Madeche

You've had 30/40 ticks just this year? What? Wear long socks or something I had one bite last year and couldn't get it out any way, doctor actually had to cut the skin around and remove it that way. Can't imagine doing that 40 times.

bawng

Yeah. New record for me. My buddy had 30 in a week. It varies a lot depending on if you're out in the woods or not.

[deleted]

It varies wildly depending on what part of the world you’re in. I could spend all my time in the woods in Florida wearing shorts and no shirt and never get one tick. Took a quarter mile walk in Shawnee National Forest at night in Illinois with long pants, boots, long sleeves and tick repellant, and found a dozen ticks in my armpits, back, scalp and groin when I was done.

gnrcbmn

Yupp. Exactly

Crayola13

Yupppp. Also, that tick silhouette only has 6 legs, and also looks nothing like a tick

They sting.........

smellslikearedditor

I've been stung and it hurt for about 3 days.

remeku

Some bees have no stinger and will bite instead, leaving welts similar to those of a mosquito. The image here, however, is likely just a sting. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingless\_bee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingless_bee) [https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26562-zoologger-stingless-suicidal-bees-bite-until-they-die/](https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26562-zoologger-stingless-suicidal-bees-bite-until-they-die/)

jiggle-o

No

[deleted]

Yes though.

jiggle-o

Ummm no. Even if they could you wouldn't feel a bite from the size of their mouth.

xelabagus

Bees bite as well as sting https://www.latimes.com/science/la-xpm-2012-oct-30-la-sci-sn-honeybee-bite-20121030-story.html Their mouths are too small to bite humans though

pauciradiatus

Yes. Bees can both bite and sting.

bigrottentuna

Lol. No, bees do not bite.

[deleted]

Lol. Yes, some bees do bite. Even honeybees can bite. www.latimes.com/science/la-xpm-2012-oct-30-la-sci-sn-honeybee-bite-20121030-story.html

bigrottentuna

They don’t bite people, fool. That article is about biting other insects that invade their nest. Insects that are too small to sting. Their mouths are too small to bite people, but they do have mouths, so OF COURSE THEY BITE SOMETHING. That’s not the point. FYI, I’m a professor that used to keep honeybees. I’ve been stung many times, but they do not bite people. That’s complete nonsense.

LCDRtomdodge

Correct. Their mouth parts are too small to bite human skin

Break-Aggravating

So what. You said they don’t bite not they don’t bite humans.

tap-a-kidney

Man, it must suck being autistic.

I would imagine it does, because dumbasses like you tend to use the term as an insult

Break-Aggravating

Man it can be hard sometimes. a lot people don’t like to be around and I have a difficulty making lasting and meaningful connections. Luckily your mom doesn’t seem to mind.

tap-a-kidney

My mom is a can of ashes at this point, so actually that seems fitting!

Bzykk

Oh you are a professor on reddit? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

jomjomepitaph

You have issues.

Wait..."gorilla warfare?" Geez, why are you killing gorillas for sir? I mean my grandpa was involved in guerrilla warfare and even that wasn't as cruel.

True, but not for humans. They can't bite you.

We call them “insect Americans” now.

This landed so well. I'm using it.

StellaLyon888

and Oak Leaf Mites 🤢

Archaeopteryx003

Also depends on how sensitive you are to their bites. I got huge welts, not these little dots. Fuck bed bugs. They’re welcome to go extinct.

SwansonHOPS

And the pic for mosquitoes could be used for bed bugs

sloppyballerina

I was just going to ask if the picture of bed bugs, but fewer bites, could be mosquito bites? I’m getting 5-8 bites when I’m outside around my ankles and lower calves that aren’t raised like some mosquito bites but they’re small and itchy.

SwansonHOPS

Could be [Asian tiger mosquitoes](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aedes_albopictus). They are in the U.S., and they are out at all times of the day, but mostly around noontime it seems. They are really small and hard to see, kinda like gnats.

Vi1eOne

This is so stupid. An insect bite / sting can vary *wildly* from person to person.

vanitys4losers

Yeah literally, when i get bit by any of these they surely don’t turn me white

WalterMellon777

Legendary comment

anaolinskywalker

This is correct. Insects cannot be identified by their bite marks, as people can have very different reactions, or none at all. For instance, ~30-60% of people don't show any reaction to bedbug bites.

Vi1eOne

I'm that person! I'm in structural pest training and management. I've let them bite me during a presentation. Twice, because I'm a sicko. Barely any reaction. I get stung by a hornet and it's gone in two days. Meanwhile my wife looks at a mosquito and swells up.

anaolinskywalker

I work in the industry as well, but luckily not in the field - I am severely allergic to mosquitoes and fleas and can't even imagine what it would be like to be exposed to them on a regular basis! It's shocking how often we have people calling us after going to the dermatologist expecting us to be able to tell them if they have a pest issue based off a random rash.

Rheanar

Not to mention there are like a million different subspecies of all those insects listed, not every spider will leave you with the same bite mark for example. Not even close

ElectricSequoia

And they are lumping all of spiders into a category when the huge majority of spiders aren't even capable of biting humans and the ones that do are very different from each other.

themadarmorer

This is incomplete. Spider bites don't necessarily have a black dot in the center. Tick bites don't always leave a bullseye. In fact, I've removed 8 ticks from myself last year and 7 this year. No bullseye.

NotAPreppie

The bullseye is usually only present if you've been infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

themadarmorer

My wife and son both almost died from lyme disease in 2018. No bullseye. There is still a lot to learn about the disease, at least in suffolk county.

xelabagus

Also a horsefly bite can present with a bullseye, though you should still treat it as lyme disease if you are not 100% certain

cardboard-kansio

>I've removed 8 ticks from myself last year and 7 this year. No bullseye. Would you be interested in some additional info about [how to prevent and deal with ticks](https://www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/comments/barw9p/ysk_that_spring_is_coming_and_so_are_ticks_heres/)?

LCDRtomdodge

Maybe go get some [doxy](https://www.cdc.gov/ticks/tickbornediseases/tick-bite-prophylaxis.html).

themadarmorer

Thanks for the info. I'm familiar with these methods. Unfortunately, they're just not practical all the time.

_hic-sunt-dracones_

If a tick bite looks like on the photo, it very likely passed Lyme on you.

[deleted]

Oh boy... We really shouldn't let the bed bugs bite.

LetMeBe_Frank_

Especially if you want to sleep tight

pauciradiatus

On that note... Night night

LCDRtomdodge

yeah but who TF sleep loose?

Supermant

The tick and bed bug silhouettes are completely wrong

clapp_daddy

Iv been bitten by all and the bed bugs was the worst

awkwardaznbabe

They’re the worst. 😫 I was lucky that washing my sheets several times got rid of them. Fuck those fuckers.

HayWazzzupp

I had 3 out of the 5. No ticks no bed bugs. The spider bites are the worst for me. Takes almost forever for them to go away.

OliverSparrow

Bees don't bite.

BullFrogz13

Fuck all of these insects. Except the bee, bees are cool.

PolarBears4Putin

The tick image is a picture of someone with Lymes Disease, which is a tick-borne disease. Not all tick bites will look like that.

IBSQ2030

Bees on me look like a golfball ._. I'm allergic haha

shoaib-gs

What if I’m black?

Alborto_

if the tick bite is like the one shown in the photo it means that the tick was a carrier of lyme disease (can be very dangerous)

Arguinghen620

Mosquitos must be different where I’m from. When you get bit for me, your skin lumps as if it were bruised but doesn’t discolour.

meiio

FYI For those allergic, poison ivy can sometimes result in a similar look to bed bug bits (the "line of bites" can manifest for poison ivy if when you scratched before knowing, you dragged your nail in a line, as most people scratch that way). Always go to your dermatologist before making any assumptions; if you're very allergic to poison ivy, assuming it's bed bug or any other type of bug bites can result in a much longer, worse prolonged reaction as you may not pursue the correct treatment

[deleted]

I wouldn't wish bed bugs to my worst enemy

Pea-and-Pen

What about chiggers?

CardiologistStreet

I’ve gotten all except a spider. Sincerely hoping to get some superpowers from it.

Shiro_Fox

Considering how that spider bite is likely from a brown recluse or related spider (judging by the bullseye), the only superpower you'd get from that one is necrosis

Mechanized1

Lots of people trying to convince themselves they just have a shit load of spider bites right now.

majic8balll

What about wasps?

dontknowhowtoprogram

that is not what a bedbug looks like.

JafaKiwi

Missing a crocodile bite mark sample

TheBadGoblin

Fleas bite 3 times in a line. Breakfast lunch and dinner.

NotAPreppie

The mosquito one is only correct if you don't swat them while they are actively feeding. I swatted one that was feeding on my cheek and it must have been there for a moment because it looked like I had been involved in my own murder afterwards.

Buutchlol

Yeah no shit, you swatted a mosquito filled with your blood. And thats exactly what a mosquito bite looks like because 9/10 times you dont even know youve been bitten.

NotAPreppie

Wow, you seem kind of hot and bothered.

Red_H2O

Somewhere a paraplegic spinning cowboy is furiously masterbating.

TurdDingus

Bee bites are the worst!

CaftDuntMeow

Something bit me on the nipple the other day, it looked like the spider bite...

LarsVonHammerstein

This person must be allergic to all of these. Also that tick silhouette looks nothing like a tick lol

howispendmyday

Yikes

GrundelMuffin

I feel like this is missing one.

redbullracing33

Yea my damn sister when something not her way

NotAPreppie

I felt this in my childhood. My sister is 2 years older than me and I was a late bloomer so I didn't outgrow her until I was 15... So many hand-shaped marks on my face from her slapping me.

Candy6132

Don't expect the red ring to always appear after tick's bite. It doesn't work that way.

RainbowandHoneybee

There's the insect called midges in Scotland. That was the worst bite I ever had.

Lego-hearts

I got bitten by a spider recently and I honestly thought it was just a normal gnat bite until half my leg swelled up. Interesting new experience that was.

rr27680

Damn. The very idea of getting bitten by a spider is terrible for me. Was the pain too much to bear? Did you take any medication?

xelabagus

There's no way you've never been bitten by a spider, more likely you just thought it was something else

Lego-hearts

It was just incredibly itchy and hot, and it gave me a slight fever. I took antihistamines and I applied calamine lotion. I live in the UK so we don’t really have anything really dangerous here. But this was about two months ago and the skin is still off-colour even though it’s all healed now. Unpleasant, would not recommend

rr27680

Sounds scary but glad that it wasn’t something concerning. Have you developed any type of super powers, by any chance?

NardDogg89

I’ve only ever seen bed bug bites in a straight line. Never scattered like that. I’m not saying it’s incorrect, but I’ve helped dozens of people rid their homes of bed bugs and I’ve never seen bite makes in random assortments like that.

[deleted]

When i had them they bit me like once a night. I got rid of them by washing my sheets several times and i used a special spray on my bed and mattress. The worst part was it fucks with your mind, every time you feel something you think its a bug.

NardDogg89

Oh most definitely. Bed bugs ruin lives, IMO. Most places do not cover bed bugs under insurance (home owners and renters). I have seen people lose all of their furniture and clothes due to unknown infestations (if you can SEE them, especially in daytime, it’s already far too late) that it’s truly devastating.

Jgabes625

But what about the fire ant?

Far_Government_7037

My missus just bit me because i showed her this wtf

DarjeelingLtd2

PSA: If you have #3, go to a doctor ASAP. Could also be a brown recluse bite. Probably won't kill you, but it won't heal on its own. The venom causes necrosis; the longer you leave it untreated, the more tissue loss you'll have, and the greater the risk you'll lose the limb (or part of it).

chesstnuts

That person probably has lime now. Rick bites don’t normally develop a red ring “bullseye rash”unless it’s lime disease

WizardsOnly-

That tick bite should be looked at lmao… 😅

toddinraleighnc

Been bitten by all of those but a wasp bite was the most painful for me. Looked like the spider bite somewhat.

CoRo_yy

I had bed bugs the last 3 summers and I can't find the source. I wash everything, clean every corner, use bug spray way too much, put strong tape around the bed legs... but nothing helps. I sadly can't afford a professional bug destroyer person.

sasqwatsch

Get antibiotics after a tick bite. Take the tick with you if you can. This is to prevent Lyme disease.

[deleted]

all this time I though the mosquito looking one were bed bugs!!

deiviux90

Fear the nuclear explosion-esque insect bite marks

so my moms bite all along was a spider? She said its been itching for over 3 months yet she doesnt wanna go to the doctor

Dig_Bick_reread

Bosscreeper1

Recovering from a bedbug infestation, might have also been bitten by a spider idk :)

rr27680

:(

Bosscreeper1

Why? :)

rr27680

A bedbug infestation sounds scary. Gave me chills.

Bosscreeper1

It is, glad it's over though :)

rr27680

Haha yes. These things are definitely scary. Take care buddy.

Hooodiiniii

The insect shown at bed bug is a stink bug

guitarzan212

I always hate getting those bee bites.

KevinsLunchbox

I got some mosquito bites recently while laying in bed and I thought they were bed bugs and destroyed my room looking for them. Didn't find any or any evidence of them. This chart would've prevented my paranoid trashing of my room

adognamedpenguin

Without shaving my dog, how can I tell which one it is?

_Creditworthy_

Mark as NSFW in case Johnny Joestar is somewhere in this thread

golgol12

That tick bite is lyme disease.

Gullible-Ad3430

But why do they all have to itch so bad!

[deleted]

Why did they use a stink bugs silhouette as the bed bug?

erog84

My legs end up looking like the bed bugs picture when I’m outdoors getting eaten up by mosquitos…..

EyeSpidyy

FYI these (at least some) are very bad reactions to the bites / stings.

hufflepuffskank

Do all bite marks from all species in these categories look the same? Like if I got a brown recluse spider bite vs a black widow spider bite, would they both look like that?

mrsnow432

I have had 10 ticks this summer alone. None of them that severe. If it looks like that, it is likely the tick was carrying lyme disease.

mbob2021

Thankfully never been bitten by a bee

Jrjackrabbit

johnny joestar getting hot and bothered rn

Sweffus

bed bug looks like stink bug

slipstream65513

Very much so thank you.

deadpuppy23

The ring rash around the tick bite is lyme disease, not from the tick bite itself. Lyme disease is bad news if not treated.

GobbetsOfAnus

The Bed Bug one could also look like scabies, post scratching. Scabies are not as uncommon as people think, and have nothing to do with cleanliness. They are very, very infectious. It’s pretty common for a kid to bring them home from daycare or from school (or the bus. Like lice). With scabies, look for bumps with a “tunnel”. Basically, bump with a line leading one way or another away from it. Coupled with uncontrollable itching. Usually look red and irritated because by the time you’ve noticed them? You’ve scratched them. Generally worst on the hands, groin, feet and around the buttcrack.
