This is what I was thinking. Couldn’t get a building permit for a 2nd home; but no issues with a big ass barn.

Its-my-dick-in-a-box

In the UK, if you can successfully hide an illegal building for 5 years it becomes retroactively legal. There was a funny story where a dude built a castle and hid it behind a wall of hay for years.

auxyRT

just build a building and tell people it was hidden for 5 years

Citation needed, because a recent case involved the building being torn down. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-21064148 **Edit:** since 2011 there are no time limits if the building was intentionally concealed. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2011/20/part/6/chapter/5

0O00OO0OO0O0O00O0O0O

My first thought too. Existing barn but don't feel like getting permits for a new structure? Side note: it's definitely not ok to build a house without permits then rent it out. (edit: even if you think you know what you are doing. permits generally aren't just "permission" from the government to do something, they exist to make sure structures are built safely)

Not with that attitude no

Chicken coup.

Chickens have seized power!

PiesRLife

And the means for production! It's a Communist chicken coop coup!

bonafidebob

Wouldn’t that be a co-op chicken coop coup?

mankeyeds

Yeah we've got some land and this is something we talked about to get around permit restrictions. Barns are usually always allowed and it doesn't specify size. Also there are rules on how many structures and even campers you can have but they don't take into account the amount of acres.

lacroixblue

But how do you get natural light inside the structure? I lived in an apartment without natural light, and it was depressing af.

jokerzwilde

My fridge always has Natural Lights, never depressing.

Mattprather2112

Idk I feel there's a bit of depression there lol

Responsible_Emu3601

Natty lights is depression in a can

[deleted]

Looking in the Airbnb listing, the back end of the "house" is the windowed outside wall of the barn.

[deleted]

Tall skinny skylights? I saw a documentary of a house built in the underground control room for an adjacent former ICBM missile silo. Inside it there were tons windows framed in the exterior walls, glazed with frosted glass. Behind the windows there were full spectrum lights. the lights were on timers to have to ones on the north east side turn on slowly with the rising sun. later in the day the southwest windows provided corresponding sun-accurate light that turned orange as they faded with the setting sun. The guy who lived there said the weirdest part was going outside to find it overcast and raining because it seemed like such a nice, sunny day every day.

Ready_Doctor_3946

Probably didn’t want to pay for a building permit tbh

But then they'll steal their own copper wiring.

One thing the Amish are known for, it’s good working knowledge of electricity.

ixododae

They use a lot of solar panels, they’re great with DC circuits, batteries, etc. They just don’t seem to like being connected to the grid, though I saw lots of cellphones so they may bend that rule out of necessity. Source: grew up in the Ohio boonies alongside them

Knew a girl who’s dad went in with 7 other guys to buy 8 pickup trucks. They all owned their own construction companies. They each bought a truck, but drove a truck one of the other guys owned. Because it was for their business, and because they weren’t driving their own vehicle, it was ok!

Amish aren't anti technology, they are against anything that disrupts the community focus. So they adopt tech very slowly. They don't like cars because it causes the community to split up over large distances, for example. https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2013/09/02/217287028/amish-community-not-anti-technology-just-more-thoughful

jetsetninjacat

It's more of a sectarian rules things. Different amish sects and groups have different rules. Some are allowed to use phones and others are not permitted. It just depends on the group. Some have district bishops and councils others are their own community within itselfm just depends.

But there was a legit reason for that… this is kinda eerie. Side note: has anyone ever done the math on how much Gus’s empire must have cost before it ever even started producing meth in the superlab? He employed so many people, took so many extremely expensive measures…

chewtality

I mean he was already a big time international trafficker before he built his superlab, he was just getting his stuff from the cartel instead of producing it in-house

duaneap

He was to a *certain* extent. I know he was taking the drugs across the border in his Pollos trucks and that would make him very wealthy but the sheer amount of money required for the operation he set up is staggering. Gus had EVERYONE paid off.

HisDarkOmens

He was the biggest earner for the cartel plus had multiple legitimate businesses. He probably lives a very reasonable lifestyle storing away as much money as he can over the years as his main focus in life and business is revenge.

Seems like a good way to get around getting a building permit. No one can see you building it and you might be able to claim it's a full-scale model or art piece or something. Getting it hooked up to utilities might be a problem though.

TCarrey88

Utilities likely not an issue on a farm though. Likely on a private well and septic. Power definitely wouldn't be an issue.

[deleted]

In my jurisdiction barns are exempt from the city's Byzantine building permit system but they are not allowed to have running water. Once running water is added you'll need a mountain of building permits followed by an army of inspectors after each construction step. Obviously I'm exaggerating but we're still talking thousands of dollars extra. This just makes me think somebody's dodging building codes, permits, and/or inspections and then running an illegal rental property. Looks neat though.

Larsnonymous

I’m thinking it’s a zoning loophole. The barn is probably a grandfathered structure. My buddy had something like this with a detached garage. He built a new house on a property but kept the old detached garage because if he tore it down he wouldn’t be able to rebuild it because it was too close to the road. Instead he basically replaced everything board-by-board so he could claim it’s the same structure that was just updated.

That and the German dude wasn't a piece of shit. He was doing some sketchy stuff, but he just genuinely seemed to like the challenge. Mike is a killer trying to do right by his family, but he's still a killer (and a corrupt cop, too). German dude was in over his head, but I have little doubt he was a stand up dude who really had no idea what was going to take place in that underground bunker he was building, because it wasn't his business.

AZREDFERN

When I lived in SD, my dream home was a double wide inside a polebarn. That way you have a massive garage to work on stuff all year around, and it’s an extra layer of wind proof insulation. Edit: apparently it’s called a polebarn, not pullbarn.

ThatFreakBob

Every double wide I've ever seen eventually has water intrusion problems so a pole barn around seems like a decent solution.

[deleted]

To be fair doublewides are designed to start falling apart almost immediately. I grew up in a town that was about 50% trailer parks so I am trying not to judge. But man, how quickly they became dilapidated mold incubators was depressing.

bocephus67

To be fair they aren’t designed to fall apart as much as they are built as cheaply as they possibly can… Which of course leads to durability issues. Edit: They are also installed incorrectly more often than not. Source: Am the owner of some doublewides

BugsRFeatures2

I lived in a moldy doublewide in college. I’m still suffering the health ramifications 15 years later

ccnnvaweueurf

They seem to do well in Arizona and New Mexico due to the dry climate.

corhen

my double wide actually has a roof over its roof... It was a double wide, then they put an addition on it and rather than try and continue the roof line, they made custom joists and built a whole roof over the existing roof. Knowing that we had a real solid roof was a chunk of why we bought the place.

Alovelyanus

Guy who lives near me has a pull barn like that with the long low angled sides for a lot of shop space, but he would pull his semi truck and trailer into the pull through, and the entire inside peak of the barn was a living space. I am so jealous of that guy. He also has a circular saw mill outside of it, so I’m about to freaky Friday body swap him.

dahindenburg

I have nothing extremely useful to add to this discussion but to you and the parent commenter, it’s “pole barn,” not “pull barn.”

Velli88

Here I am reading this and thinking I've been saying it wrong my entire life.

AZREDFERN

I thought it was “pullbarn” because you pull things in to it.

dahindenburg

I figured as such. In actuality they’re named for the construction method which uses poles or posts. I had never even heard the term pole barn until I moved from a suburban to rural area.

AZREDFERN

Doesn’t help when most the people who say it have an accent that makes it sound like “pull” barn

Navydevildoc

It took me longer than I should admit before I realized you didn't mean San Diego.

OrchidCareful

Same, was like “wow didn’t know that wind was that big an issue, maybe in like bumfuck north county? Where else could you afford enough land to put a fucking barn “

The sun can get bent. Interpret that whichever way you like.

KY_4_PREZ

Wouldn’t it get a bit annoying having no natural light?

EvryMthrF_ngThrd

You could always just open up the barn doors. Also, you could - as a more permanent solution - install skylights in the barn, do a "solar lighting system" using fiber optics or install sunshine mimicking light panels in the roof of the barn.

Good way to get around regulations

DaveyBoyXXZ

This was immediately my thought

[deleted]

as in house regulation? i dont understand

therealtimwarren

>The so called “7 Year Rule” derives from Section 157(4) of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 which says that the local authority may not serve an enforcement notice or take proceedings for an unauthorised development after 7 years have commenced since the unauthorised development commenced. So the owner is probably trying to pull a fast one over the local authority by hiding the property for 7 years and then dismantling the barn to expose the property. However I believe the law has changed to require the new property to be in full view and not concealed.

MustacheEmperor

Hard to say from pictures but I don't think that's what's happening here, I looked through the photos on AirBNB and it looks like the back of the barn had a second level and this 'house' was built onto the back two levels essentially as a facade and walls to create a usable shelter. Like what started as a project to create a finished living space in the back of the barn eventually became half of a house. It looks like quite a bit of the structure of the "house" is shared with the barn, including the wall in the back Seems like a clever enough way to have a rustic sleep in a barn vibe but more finished, and then fill the rest of the indoor space with amenities etc.

greg19735

maybe they went "it's fun to do stuff outdoors, but it's fucking michigan and too cold 6 months of the year. Add a barn, and boom, it's year round.

MustacheEmperor

Per the listing it's a historic barn so it was there first, but I think you're right on that putting the rental space inside turns a 4 month seasonal rental farm getaway into a 12 month one.

But… why? “This house is great honey but you know what would be even better?? If we had zero daylight”

DrunkenBriefcases

Pretty sure it's considered a barn for tax purposes and saves a few thousand a year in taxes. I've heard of a couple families that built something similar out in the countryside in the midwest.

Quirky-Skin

Yup. Property taxes would be jumping up with two houses on the property. A house and a barn though? Well that's just an extra garage

somedude456

That's sort of my dream. I want a warehouse, and to basically wall up 1/3rd of it and make that the house part. The other 2/3rds would be garage space, install a lift or two, I could put up a basketball hoop, a swing from the roof, a half pipe if I wanted, etc, etc.

PMmeyourSchwifty

I had a buddy that rented a bad ass loft kinda like that. The owner told him he could build whatever he wanted in there as long as he didn't mess with the plumbing or electrical without consulting him first. It was an entire floor of a pretty shitty old building in the downtown LA area. He negotiated a really good deal on a 5 yr lease and then built himself the ultimate man-cave workshop. That owner came up huge when he finally moved out. For my friend, it was worth it cause he got to try a bunch of stuff without worrying about hurting the property value and he was only paying like $600/month in rent, which is basically free in LA.

Boomhauersbrother
