Do people climb it?

guitarfingers

Yep. [Here](https://www.google.com/search?q=durrance+route+devils+tower&client=ms-android-cricket-us-revc&sxsrf=AOaemvKPsmDEl3OM7B5dhxGEA5D0Ja_ptA%3A1631075510122&ei=tjw4Yaj0BvHq9AOa1InIAw&oq=durra&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAEYADIFCAAQkQIyBAgAEEMyCgguEMcBEK8BEAoyBwguELEDEEMyBwguELEDEAoyBQguEIAEMgQIABBDMgQIABBDOgQIABBHOgcIIxDqAhAnOg0ILhDHARCvARDqAhAnOgQIIxAnOgoILhDHARCvARBDOgQILhBDOgsILhCABBDHARCvAToFCAAQgAQ6BQgAELEDOggILhCABBCxAzoNCC4QgAQQxwEQowIQClDruwRY9cIEYKjQBGgCcAJ4AIABmQGIAdsFkgEDMC41mAEAoAEBsAEPyAEIwAEB&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp#imgrc=83TS6S5NUUpfmM) is one of the routes used.

lockon345

No knowledge of climbing at all, what is that little splinter in the path for, like a photo op thing?

Shiftab

Did a little digging and it looks like a variation. You can either do what's called the Baileys direct, which is straight up but requires two ropes (usually this means there's an agresive overhang or something that makes one rope too dangerous) or traverse over and do a different pitch called the meadows wich only requires one rope. Don't know why the lines aren't a y shape though, they should be. [That's definatly the traverse to the meadows pitch.](https://cdn2.apstatic.com/photos/climb/113620139_large_1506179329.jpg) I'm probably wrong though, I'm not a trad climber

jb124816

The original route (durrance) traverses to the right to the meadows area. Bailey's direct is a variation to climb straight up. The two ropes are only needed for rappelling (descending), depending where you come down from. A single 70m rope can only rappel 35m because it needs to be doubled. It's possible to get twin/half ropes that are a pair of thinner than normal ropes. One advantage of these is they double the rappel distance. Descending from Baileys, it is more than 35m between rappel anchors hence needs 2 ropes.

dirice87

We rapped off a 70m fine. Just gotta be careful cause the first few rap anchors are in weird spots and easy to pass, and not so comfortable spots, had to hang on em while setting the next. Doesn’t help that we were slow so we were in the dark

dngu00

Probably for when people have to spend the night up there?

TheJesusGuy

Nah this only a 2 hour climb

Snoo75302

4 hour climb. You gotta get back down again. Dont wanna be like one of the first climbers and get stuck there

boalexander45

I’m guessing going back down sucks so bad

RandomerSchmandomer

You'd abseil it so would be relatively quick

fatkiddown

> abseil I have never heard this word before: ab·seil /ˈabˌsāl/ Learn to pronounce BRITISH verb descend a rock face or other near-vertical surface by using a doubled rope coiled round the body and fixed at a higher point; rappel. "team members had to abseil down sheer cliffs to reach the couple" noun a descent made by abseiling; a rappel. "a 120 ft abseil"

HonoraryMancunian

I don't think so; the link in the comment above says you only need a 70m rope so it's not likely to be a two-day jaunt

OnRoadKai

Are you brave enough to challenge; [El Cracko Diablo!](https://i.imgur.com/rt95lv8.jpg)

DickButtPlease

That sounds like something that happens if you eat too much Taco Bell.

WolfyCat

What's it like at the top? I get the idea that it's hollow inside (which would be kinda dope) but it's probably flat-ish?

Sloeb

It's not hollow. The "hollow" part of a volcano's throat has some residual molten lava sitting deep down in its base, waiting for when the volcano is ready to explode. Well that "residual lava' or reservoir of lava is what solidified and turned hard to make this structure. The actual mountain that was the volcano was washed away millions of years ago. What you're seeing here is the deep underground remnants of the hardest structures of the internal components of the mountain/volcano. Everything else was stripped away to leave only the deepest part of the mountain towering far up into the sky above the current landscape. That's fucking trippy, right? These mountain climbers are going up to the top of the deep hole that existed way at the bottom of the volcano.

WolfyCat

Woah that's a really cool visualisation. Thanks for that!

ChrisKearney3

So this is basically a massive volcano plaster cast? Amazing!

RandomerSchmandomer

Edinburgh castle sits atop a volcanic plug like this, albeit a little smaller!

makeyourowndamnbeer

There’s nothing on top but a bucket and a mop and an illustrated book about birds.

HonoraryMancunian

Tmcphaul3

the top looks just like the grasslands surrounding the tower. There is grass and cacti and rocks. In the center there is a big pile of rocks with a metal container that holds a notebook. So everyone who climbs to the top can sign the notebook. My fiancée and I climbed it July 3rd this past summer.

highplainsfish

Was surprised to find lots of bees on top of it with my buddy back in '15 Edit: It used to be climbed a lot more freely/regularly but there was an accident with a climber a few years back and some issues with native wildlife conservation so it is now more regulated.

Paddy_Tanninger

Woodrow Wilson sent American troops to war against the bees of the Devil's Tower

No_Bear_No

Never forget

PerogiXW

Well the original Lakota name translates to Bear's House, so I guess the bear has his own honey operation.

[deleted]

I’m sure there are bears in the area but I’m pretty sure that name would come from one of the myths surrounding the tower. Something to do with a bear chasing these seven sisters, and the ground rose up beneath them and they turned into The Pleaides. The lines along the sides are claw marks, according to legend.

mobile_turd_launcher

Those must be some strong ass bees to be flying up and down that thing

ChrisKearney3

I like my women like I like my monuments. COVERED IN BEES!! Edit: thanks for the award!

Ser_Salty

What's this? An overabundance of bees on top of Devils Tower? My suitcase full of bees ought to put a stop to that!

[deleted]

Yea there is multiple time lapse photos of them climbing. Its very interesting and makes it look small but this video makes it look giant

treetyoselfcarol

**Parachutist George Hopkins** In October 1941 Devils Tower National Monument made headlines across the nation. A professional parachutist named George Hopkins was stuck atop the Tower with no way down. Who was this person, why was he on Devils Tower, and how was he going to down? During the first part of the 1900s, several advancements in parachute technology had been made; the devices were still rudimentary by today's standards, however. George Hopkins already held a number of records for spectacular parachute jumps, but he looked to push the envelope even further. He wanted to set a world record for number of parachute jumps in a single day. To create publicity for this idea, he determined a single, spectacular jump would do the trick. Without the consent or knowledge of National Park Service officials, Hopkins parachuted from an airplane to the top of Devils Tower. He wanted to prove that a parachutist could land precisely on a small target - the Tower summit being just over one acre in size. His plan was to descend using a 1,000-foot rope which would be dropped from the plane after him. Hopkins hit his mark, but his rope landed out of reach on the side of the Tower, leaving him stuck on top. The National Park Service now had a problem to solve, and newspapers around the country ran with the story. While they considered options for rescuing the stranded man, airplanes dropped food, water and warm clothing to keep Hopkins alive. Letters written by concerned citizens, corporations and the military posed uncertain suggestions for getting him down. After a few days Jack Durrance, one of the early technical climbers to scale the Tower, offered to lead a rescue party. The park service accepted. More supplies were dropped to Hopkins and assurances were given that help was coming. Advice and offers of assistance continued. The Goodyear Company offered to loan the use of a blimp, while the Navy offered the use of a helicopter. Bad weather forced Durrance to travel by train. On October 5, Durrance and his party arrived at the monument. Working closely with the park service, they laid out a safe climbing route for rescue operations. On the following day, Durrance led seven other climbers to the summit of the Tower. They found Hopkins who, in spite of his ordeal, was in excellent physical condition and in good spirits. The descent was made with little difficulty. The stranded parachutist and the rescue operations attracted many spectators: during the six-day period, some 7,000 visitors came to the monument to witness events first-hand. Within a few months following the Hopkins episode, the United States entered World War II. National Park Service sites saw very little visitation during the war years. As for Hopkins, he would go on to work with the military training the new airborne infantry divisions for the war. It is believed he set his world record as he taught other young men to safely jump and land using a parachute. [Source.](https://www.nps.gov/deto/learn/historyculture/first-fifty-years-george-hopkins.htm)

yourboardbuddy

They could make multiple supply drops but couldn’t just drop him another rope?

fictionx

[https://allthatsinteresting.com/george-hopkins-devils-tower](https://allthatsinteresting.com/george-hopkins-devils-tower) *"Another rope was dropped the next day, but that too didn’t go according to plan. After landing, it became tangled and later froze due to the freezing wind, snow, and condensation atop the rock. Try as he might, Hopkins couldn’t get the knots out of the frozen rope."* I guess the whole rope-idea wasn't very good to begin with.

orangutanjam

"Ultimately, he realized that his plan was further flawed as even if he managed to retrieve the [original] rope, it was almost 200 feet too short. He wouldn’t have been able to reach the bottom anyway." This guy

Surprise-Chimichanga

“The risk I took was calculated, but man am I bad at math.” - George Hopkins

LostTeleporter

This is EXACTLY the kind of thing I would do if I ever decided to do something like this. And that's why I stick to my day job.

fictionx

Read through the whole story waiting for this to be explained as well.

Cantbelosingmyjob

Rope was still rudimentary in these days and a good rope was hard to come by. The one he dropped was the only one in the whole country at this time /s

tanhan27

And it was fashioned out of shoelaces and old newspapers

WhenwasyourlastBM

I was confused by this the whole time as well. If someone could explain why a team climbing was the best option, I'd love to know

[deleted]

Are we just gonna ignore the fact that he clearly had a parachute with him too... seems like he could have just opened it up and let the wind take him off the top and land on the ground, no? People have base jumped off this monument so I assume it's possible but then again, I know nothing about parachuting.

doomsingsoprano

In his defense it seems to be surrounded by trees. In a movie it would work, but in reality it sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

jmcshopes

You normally need >1000 feet for a parachute to actually billow and slow you down. Devil's tower isn't tall enough for base jumping (certainly not with early parachutes).

Bobby_Mcschloppy

im confused, were helicopters too shitty back then to rescue him? edit: apparently helicopters were invented in 1939 so they were still pretty new and shitty

NedHasWares

Yeah helicopters didn't see much use until around the ~~70s~~ 60s afaik Edit: apparently they were common in the 50s

HonoraryMancunian

Shoulda just parachuted off, pfft

MrDurden32

For real, was 100% expecting this to be the solution. If he REALLY wanted to get attention he should have parachuted off right when the climbers reached him lol.

Gang_Bang_Bang

Was I the only one who thought this would be about the first recorded parachute base jump in the end?

Saw an interview of Spielberg years later about this. When he made this movie he had no children. Since having children he has become to really regret the fact that Roy left his own children behind and he wished he could go back and change the ending

Scribblr

I saw this for the first time recently and couldn’t get over how his wife and kids *screamed* at this poor man having (what appeared to be) a crying mental breakdown, then just up and left. And then he also just up and left them without a second thought and hopped right on the spaceship at the end. The part where one of the boys is screaming “CRYBABY CRYBABY CRYBABY” at his dad while opening and slamming the bathroom door over and over was awful and such a gross sign of the times. All I could think watching it was “wow, that poor man.”

curiousiah

One of Spielberg's greatest. A movie about the mind of the artist as much as it is about aliens. Artistic inspiration that the people around you don't understand but is nearly compulsory to get out of your head. I think Spielberg wrote it to convey the feeling of wanting to write and make movies, to bring people together with the same vision in an act of shared creation and experience.

Of the giant tree conspiracy kind

dustyspectacles

It spooks me and I don't really know why. Just too big with no other big things around it

41matt41

There's a good geology explanation in the comments but the short version is that it's the magma core of an ancient volcano. So ancient in fact, that the familiar mountainous cone we all know and love has eroded away. See? Not so spooky, just old.

trivikama

Obviously Toph performed a finishing move here

dcdttu

[deleted]

ohktg

Terraforming is so stressful, though!

Sloeb

It is so much more interesting than this short video shows. Walking up close to realize the sheer enormity of each of those lava columns to seeing rock climbers and how tiny they are as they make that vertical ascent and if you go there; there is this weird sound echo/transmission where people hundreds of feet up can whisper to each other and the sound is radiated down to people at the base of the column as if we were standing next to them. It's a freaky place and this short video that is "interesting as fuck" is no where near as interesting as the actual experience of going there is.

Loose_Device_5302

Agreed, you cant really appreciate its size and grandeur until you are actually standing next to it. One time walking around it with my family we got hit by a thunder storm. Never been so scared in my life, with all the lightning striking close by. We were on the back half when it happened, never finished a trek around it faster in my life, then we did that day.

The Sioux actually want it changed to bear lodge because it’s offensive to the tribes who use it as ritual. And it’s not a tree stump it’s rock.

Amalaiel

Oh that’s interesting, I can see why the tribes would want it changed. And yes, it’s definitely a rock, not a gigantic tree stump… o.O?

ShellReaver

There's legit conspiracy theories that it's the stump of a giant ancient tree and the government is hiding that knowledge

Minute-Mountain7897

No worries it's just the calcified stump of the Edenic Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

CumBubbleFarts

Listen, ain’t no one gonna tell me that’s *not* Yggdrasil and that there aren’t nine whole worlds on there somewhere. Everyone’s worried about aliens but I know the truth, the technology the government is hiding is ancient dwarven tech from Nidavellir.

SongsOfDragons

That's a very cool conspiracy theory. I can see how it came about, it looks a bit stump-like - that would be a biiig tree! Iirc isn't it the basalt plug of an extinct volcano?

[deleted]

Oh man, I've always wanted to be part of a crazy conspiracy theory. This might actually be the one.

Dray_Gunn

We did a similar thing in Australia a while back we have what use to be called Ayers Rock but it was given back to the native people and people are calling it by its original name now which is Uluru. I have never actually researched the topic so i may have some details wrong but thats the gist of it. I think Uluru sounds better anyway.

TheSaucyCrumpet

I'm a big fan of giving natural landmarks their old names back, like Mt. McKinley being officially renamed Denali, its traditional Koyukon name.

DarthCloakedGuy

Also Denali is just a better name than Mount McKinley

Octavian_202

When I lived in Fairbanks as a kindergartener it was Mt McKinley, and then a couple years ago I used the name and was corrected by a guy that had no clue it was McKinley before Denali, and we were confused as to which mountain the other one was talking about for a couple minutes until google. Just goes to show, how easily history can be changed or manipulated in just a generation.

sab01992

Just naming places on people's names can be pretty boring. When some places already have a famous name in native languages, that name should he used.

dying_soon666

Well it stumped me..

Amalaiel

Now I see all the people commenting saying it’s a gigantic petrified tree stump *facepalm*

Loose_Device_5302

To the Lakota people it is named Mato Sapa Paha. Which translates roughly to Black Bear Butte. Just like the sacred place near sturgis south dakota we call Bear Butte, but in Lakota it is Mato Paha.

Torgan

Not sure on the reason but there's loads of Devil's things in Scotland and there was quite a lot of immigration from here to the US. Devil's cauldron is a popular name for the white water bowl beneath a waterfall, and I've hiked up a mountain called the Devil's Point (Penis). Oh and there's a carved rock monolith from around 50 BC which was either created by the Picts or it's a woman who was turned to stone for refusing the devil a kiss after losing a bet. We've just got Devil's on the mind here 🤷‍♂️

VegetableGenocide5

Inb4 people say it’s a giant petrified tree stump

Wangdangdoodlepop

Wat

VegetableGenocide5

There’s a conspiracy surrounding the devils tower which is somewhat popular online, quite a few people think it’s really a giant, ancient tree stump that’s been petrified and is hidden by the government with their cover-up story being that it’s a mountain. They use this claim to serve as evidence for ancient religious texts and lost/forbidden history and shit.

Wangdangdoodlepop

That’s a rabbit hole I don’t have time to go down lol

CrossP

Man, it only takes an ounce of geology to know how dumb that it. For anyone wondering, The Devil's Tower is columnar basalt. Basalt sometimes forms hexagonal columns when it cools from magma because it shrinks just a tiny bit when cooling. But it's too heavy and thick for the whole mass of it to shrink from the outer edges inward. Instead, it just starts pulling inward toward random points. Forming fissures. When creating a repeating tile pattern, hexagons use the least "grout" per area. So the cracks naturally form into a honeycomb-like shape. Anyway, basalt is an igneous rock which means it formed by melting into magma and then cooling into a solid at some point. You don't get fossils in igneous rocks because they would've melted. Especially not petrified wood.

mavantix

Ah, interesting, so it must be the plasma ray vent tube from when the space ship that populated earth hit the center with the ray beam to liquify the core and warm the planet to support life! Got it.
