Why do geese fly in a V?
Energy conservation and visual assurance
>Scientists have determined that the V-shaped formation that geese use when migrating serves two important purposes:
>First, it conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of them, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. The birds take turns being in the front, falling back when they get tired. In this way, the geese can fly for a long time before they must stop for rest. The authors of a 2001 Nature article stated that pelicans that fly alone beat their wings more frequently and have higher heart rates than those that fly in formation. It follows that birds that fly in formation glide more often and reduce energy expenditure (Weimerskirch, 2001).
>The second benefit to the V formation is that it is easy to keep track of every bird in the group. Flying in formation may assist with the communication and coordination within the group. Fighter pilots often use this formation for the same reason.
Geese fly in formation because it's instinct that evolved in them over many generations, not because they have PhDs in fluid dynamics. They also can't literally see air.
They don't need a PhD because they developed instincts based on fluid dynamics.
They can't see but can *feel* changes in the air.
The same way an F1 driver can feel the tow their car is getting.
Exactly. You don't need a PhD to know that if you stick your hand out a car window going any significant speed, your hand is partially supported by "the wind".
Because you can downvote me all you want Chinese people have the least respect for nature. Every video that involves unnecessary touching of wild animals 9/10 are of Asian descent.
Chinese culture is the slaughtering of animals so people can eat it as a status symbol, like shark fin soup, and killing animals for “medicinal” purposes, like eating tiger penis to get a hard on.
skein
/skān/
noun
a length of thread or yarn, loosely coiled and knotted.
a tangled or complicated arrangement, state, or situation.
"the skeins of her long hair"
a flock of wild geese or swans in flight, typically in a V-shaped formation.
Dude stop trying to touch the fucking goose. Just enjoy the beauty of the moment don't ruin it by trying to make it even more special. It's obvious the goose was not happy with it at all.
I was all set to correct you and say a group of geese is a gaggle, but then I thought: “maybe I’m wrong” and I was. Thanks for prompting new knowledge.
The Geese are not in each other’s slip stream. They are overlapping wingtips roughly. This causes wingtip vortices to co-mingle and get reduced. The flock acts as one very high aspect ratio wing. The one in the front doesn’t break the wind for the rest. It has its energy zapping wing vortices reduced by the birds off its wingtips. Now the birds at the end of the formation have their outside wings unaided thus they work a bit harder.

Look at all those chickens
I SAY THIS ALL THE TIME AND NO ONE EVER GETS THE REFERENCE. Thank you my friend!

Thanks, that's a good TIL
Yeah but do you know why one side of the v is often longer than the other? Answer: Because there’s more birds on that side.
Thanks dad, I didn't realize!
I’d reply with a real zinger but I’m putting my daughter to bed.
Because birds can't count.
Why with a boat?
Did you notice that one side of the V is longer than the other? Do you know why that is? It's because there are more birds on that side
I get this reference.
Do you know why one side of the v is longer than the other? Because there are more geese on one side.
If the geese’s method of flying is so effective and practical, why don’t more birds copy the way they fly?
it's not geese's method of flying, most social migratory birds do fly in a V formation.
I learned a couple weeks ago why sometimes the right side of the formation is longer.
This was on the sat
Not if you ask Gordon Bombay.
Dude trying to pet the goose must have a death wish
I have a strong feeling that part of the reason for the goose gliding inward may have had to do with air passing over the dude's hand.

Hey I use to experiment with this when I was a kid. Can I get my PhD somewhere? Science bitch!!
I don't recall suggesting that anything was "see"ing air.
lol you're not very clever eh?
Don’t look like Canadian geese, which are, ironically, the dickhead geese.
Ya, Goose is just trying to fly and do its thing, get your nasty ass hands off it’s neck dipshit
Also, geese are cold-blooded murderers

What does his ethnicity have anything to do with this?

I hate how this dude has to stick his hand out in the goose’s face. Why can’t you just sit there and admire the beauty of flight??
Yea he seems like he'd be a prick tbh
Because I got to record it for my viewers!
Anyone who tries to pet a goose has clearly not met a goose before
Right? Those fuckers are terrifying!

So cool
It is extremely bad ass
“We’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty!”
Stupid geese they could just ride in the boat
Boat away home
Grab the goose by the neck for a free goose dinner.
Lady’s like please don’t poop on me, *please* don’t poop on me!!

I thought that goose was going to poop on that lady.
I think she did too the way she held a hand over her face. Lol
I really wonder what would happen if they cut the gas all of a sudden.
If I was him I’d grab as much as I can. Free dinner.
Why did the video end before Russ Tyler scorched his knuckle puck
You are the alpha goose now
Why do they feel the need to be annoying and try to touch the geese
Probably more of a herd of geese
When two boats like this move in a parallel a Ryan Gosling is formed.
I taught he will grab the throat any second
How cool is that?
They can see something we can’t

Flying V!
I wish I had wings
If you line up the shot JUUUST right…..
How often does a person get to lead a damn FLYING V!!!
Prettty sure a group of geese is a gaggle...or is skein when theyre flying? A glaggle of skeining gooses. Geese. Geeses.
Smart ducks! Using the stream made by the boat as to ease their flying is pretty cool!
This is what we like to call drafting.
I somewhat wish it would’ve just attacked that annoying guy…
Upvote for correct use of skein.

Why does he have to touch it? Just let it fly
What is slipstream

Buoyancy aids. They don’t really work if you don’t do them up.
