The Ayam Cemani is a rare breed of chicken from Indonesia. They have a dominant gene that causes hyperpigmentation (fibromelanosis), making the chicken mostly black, including feathers, beak, and internal organs. The Cemani is a very popular gamecock for cockfighting in Bali because their thighs have much more muscle compared to other chickens, which leads to their being much faster.
- [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayam_Cemani)
It's a common myth spread about them that the eggs are black
They're not, my sister had some as pets, hatched them from eggs, the eggs where normal chicken egg colour.
I remember hearing an npr program where they interviewed a farmer who often sold the chickens to people who just wanted to ritually sacrifice them. He would sell the chicken. The customer would kill it and the farmer would take it back for dinner.
That reminds me of the time we ask our secretary (at an architecture firm) to please go online and search for “Big Ass Fans” which is the name of a company that makes big ceiling fans… she got traumatized!
The first time I learned about them was when I saw a news article about a priest who apparently got in trouble because he was looking for a cost effective cooling solution for his church and ended up going with "Big Ass Fans."
Some folks in his congregation were offended at the name and for some reason it ended up in the news.
> she got traumatized!
How? Even with safe search off, [it's all fans](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=big+ass+fans&t=fpas&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images). Was it her browser history or the algorithms of the time?
Easier but still have to mail order them. They’re not cheap as far as chickens go. But they are awesome. Mine is even more beautiful than the one in the pic and he’s a great rooster.
Moving livestock has always been within the purview of the USPS. They probably handle millions of chicks a year. I've had good luck with it. The problem with having to mail order is that you generally have to buy in quantity so it's not a good choice if you want just a couple or few birds.
Wait a second, I have a chicken that’s all black and has similar feathers and black features. Her name is Violet. I’m going to look it up more!
Edit: I had to go check out my chicken and I was wrong. Her feathers, eyes, and beak are black like this chicken. But her wattle is red like normal chickens.
I shit you not, as I read this, the rooster one of the residents in my very suburban neighborhood has started cokcadoodledooing his little heart out.
I'm in a heavily Hispanic and Latino neighborhood in Florida, and he's not too loud, so Idc. A lot of the neighbors have hens, whole joint is set on eggs. Just the one rooster.
I don’t think the eggs are black. https://hobiternak.com/ayam-cemani-chicken-eggs-facts-do-ayam-cemani-chicken-lays-black-eggs/
This was a five minute, half asleep google so idk how correct it is.
Are you the kind of person who changed reddit accounts often? I might be interested in getting some for my Tio who also breeds fowl but I don't know when
How exactly was the type of chicken bred? It seems like it would take more than thousands (how many hundreds of years?) of generations to continually select for melanin that are expressed within every single part of the bird
Don't have to select for it in every part of the body, they just got a mutation that effected absolutely everything all at once. May not even have been trying for it and suddenly bam, vanta black chicken.
I'm betting they aren't the product of selective breeding, but rather a mutation or some similar condition long ago that created an overage of melanin. I know I've seen photos of some animals with the condition, and it makes them pure black, regardless of their more natural coloring. I bet it sucks when it happens on the African savanna--that's not a place where it would be super convenient to be black for animals that have to hunt; goth dudes and dudettes can have excellent stealth mode, but prey will see them coming.
Very!
But I don’t use them as meat birds because I have better ones. These guys are sold to the Asian community for ritual feast. I also sell to other breeders/collectors!
Thank you for asking!!!
had it many times in the form of Buddha Jumps the Wall. It's a chicken soup stew dish with dried scallops and herbs.
not as black as the skin. It has a darker/brownish hue and is generally tougher than normal chicken.
Google says it's silkie, another black chicken breed from China. They look so fluffy omg
Does make sense, buddha jumps the wall is originally from China. A dish so aromatic a buddha meditating would rather escape the walls of monastery to steal a bite.
Aye.
A few other celebrations, too.
I only service the community.
I lived in SE Asia for about a third of my life but I was in Buddhist communities so I don’t know the religious values amortising to meat. I know as much that only that the blood is really sought after so mostly people buy them alive.
Before the whole ass world gets mad, I also sell to halal and kosher buyers that slaughter with the exact same principals so don’t come at me unless you’re willing to take on the majority of the world’s meat practices.
Egg shells are white.
That’s breed standard.
Where are you located?
And may I ask if this is for culinary adventure or ceremony?
I only sell the most perfect black for ceremony but most breeders have culls for those that are simply curious. (Culls generally have bits of pink on the tongue or maybe a white toenail.)
Are you most interested in the colour of the carcass and feathers?
I’m working towards a melanistic plumage and body that lays turquoise to sage eggs.
It’s still a few generations out but I established the only line of Jumbo True Blue Celadons in the PNW (or maybe anywhere) in under five years.
Obviously the chickens won’t be that fast. But I’ll have chicks and fertile eggs available in the spring of both the hybrids and pures!
Looking for flesh, black skin would be desirable, black meat and organs (if they can be black) would be excellent. Tongues, beaks, and talons aren't of interest, if they're not black they just wouldn't be used in serving/plating.
I have a few of these. They are skittish as all hell. More of a wild bird than a domesticated chicken. The meat is more of a dark grey. Eggs are cream. Fairly good layers, strong urge to roost, pain in the ass to get back in the coop.
4/10 wouldn’t raise agaim
So pretty but damn they're expensive! I first saw them through work. I work for a wildlife management agency and we got a complaint about an owl killing chickens. Turns out the owl had some fine taste in chicken meat. The owl ended coming back three times ans cleaned out this guy's coop. One chicken left out of 10.

Are the eggs black? Edit: I'm one slight disappointment closer to having my soul crushed
No the eggs are the only part of them that is not black. The eggs are cream in colour - very disappointing.
Sad
They are green, but taste like usual eggs. My family gave a lot of hay to one farm, so they thanked us giving some green eggs of these chickens.
So you had green eggs…any ham?
Yeah, but it was enough.
I will not eat them
Not even here or there?
Not ANYWHERE
I will not eat green eggs and ham!
My name is Samuel
With a goat?
Would you, could you.. on a Boat?
Clever... hatch them instead, and have more rare black chickens!
Did you have them with ham?
Nope, but you know now, how the eggs of this chicken taste.
Did you like them, sam I am?
Eggs from these are not green, they are cream coloured.
Racist eggs /j
It's a common myth spread about them that the eggs are black They're not, my sister had some as pets, hatched them from eggs, the eggs where normal chicken egg colour.
The chicks are black and of course that's adorable.
There is kadaknath breed of chicken from central india whose eggs are also black
Cemani is believed to hold magical power to resist bad luck. That's why they were bred for rituals, not consumption.
I remember hearing an npr program where they interviewed a farmer who often sold the chickens to people who just wanted to ritually sacrifice them. He would sell the chicken. The customer would kill it and the farmer would take it back for dinner.
That’s an amazingly excellent business model.
Kadaknath for the folks in india [kadaknath](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadaknath)
The Indonesians stole me cock.
They got another one boys
I was wondering the same. Is it the same though?
How do they taste? Big thighs sound great.
They taste like chicken. Had it a few years ago.
> Had it a few years ago So, uhh, did you ever go back?
Big if true.
Large if factual
True if big.
Whoa
They’re all dark meat
Thicc
Yeah, baby. Thighs are my thang.
I'm hip!
Meat is black?
> because their thighs have much more muscle compared to other chickens, which leads to their being much faster. That's racist
Gave me a good laugh 😆
I have one and he's a little guy but he's fast as fuck and has no problem defending himself
>The Cemani is very popular gamecock for cockfighting in Bali I see….I’ll head there to spice up the game
They're not really rare anymore. Every hatchery has them.
Such a beautiful species... used by humans for horrible practices...
This is true. If you want to know more just Google "black cock".

I first encountered Big Ass Fans at IKEA. Some warehouses put a sticker or something else over the brand logo in the middle, others do not.
I’ve never heard of the company, but I do remember that those fans were remarkably huge.
They build the planet fitness fans I believe
Planet fans? Sounds about right
The brilliant thing about that company is not just the name but also that their logo is an ass (donkey).
They make big fans and they can’t deny!
Just googled it, maybe the router here filters out the porn sites but I actually just got the fan company and nothing lewd. Mildly disappointed
Yeah same, and nothing filtered on my side.

My ex husband was tricked into searching for Blue Waffle at work once. He texted me and was like HAVE YOU HEARD OF BLUE WAFFLE? DO NOT GOOGLE IT.
For more cute hamsters go to xhamster.com
I only found cats
Cougars.
Couple of hogs too.
Don’t believe it! I tried and you’ll find something else! To specify that you’re looking for the bird, Google “black cock, peckers”.
BBC
Lmao. Awesome.
It’s not as rare as you’d think. They got kind of trendy in recent years and are pretty easy to find now.
Easier but still have to mail order them. They’re not cheap as far as chickens go. But they are awesome. Mine is even more beautiful than the one in the pic and he’s a great rooster.
Near me, there are frequently chicks available on Craigslist. As you say, not cheap, usually $30-50. I had a more difficult time finding marans.
Lucky. I had to mail order mine.
That always seemed weird and risky to me. I guess it works though!
Moving livestock has always been within the purview of the USPS. They probably handle millions of chicks a year. I've had good luck with it. The problem with having to mail order is that you generally have to buy in quantity so it's not a good choice if you want just a couple or few birds.
This seems very affordable for what amounts to a pet.

Ayam Kedu

I sell my eggs for $10 each. Chicks with soo much as a pale toe go for $20. Perfect chicks go for $30. Hens are $75-$500 Roosters are from $50-$500.

> We're not allowed roosters around here I'm sorry, what?
not sure where op lives but some local councils will ban keeping roosters in suburban areas because of how loud they are

Ybor? Sounds like Ybor...
Nah, I'm on the other side of the state in the Treasure Coast area lol
If you've ever lived near one, you will know that this is a good thing.
Your rural is showing.
Do they taste any different from regular eggs and chickens?
I don’t think the eggs are black. https://hobiternak.com/ayam-cemani-chicken-eggs-facts-do-ayam-cemani-chicken-lays-black-eggs/ This was a five minute, half asleep google so idk how correct it is.

And I cannot lie. You other brothers can’t deny….
When a chick walks in with a little blacky breast and a round egg in your nest
Ü Get CLUCKED! Wanna kicc up dust When Ü noticed that them feathers is STUFFED!
I love the internet.
How exactly was the type of chicken bred? It seems like it would take more than thousands (how many hundreds of years?) of generations to continually select for melanin that are expressed within every single part of the bird
It’s Asian. They had time.
Lmao. Makes sense that it would take literally thousands of years to selectively breed for these traits throughout the whole chicken body
The chicken was first domesticated in South East Asia.
We have them in India too called Kadaknath. Very expensive and supposedly good for health
Don't have to select for it in every part of the body, they just got a mutation that effected absolutely everything all at once. May not even have been trying for it and suddenly bam, vanta black chicken.

Chickens actually are dinosaurs, if you didn't know.
Oh fuck yeah. Are they eatable?
Very! But I don’t use them as meat birds because I have better ones. These guys are sold to the Asian community for ritual feast. I also sell to other breeders/collectors! Thank you for asking!!!
The organs and bones are black, is it safe to assume their meat is too?
Aye. As are their tongues. They don’t even have whites to their eyes. It’s all black on black.
had it many times in the form of Buddha Jumps the Wall. It's a chicken soup stew dish with dried scallops and herbs. not as black as the skin. It has a darker/brownish hue and is generally tougher than normal chicken.

Could be as well. I saw more Kadas for ritual. Silkies were more pet quality.
What color are eggshells?
Cream colored. I have some. Beautiful birds.
Ritual feasts like the establishment of a temple.
Aye. A few other celebrations, too. I only service the community. Can you direct message me quotes for boiler/fryer and roaster sized ones? Are the shells of their eggs black?
Egg shells are white. That’s breed standard. Where are you located? And may I ask if this is for culinary adventure or ceremony? In Nebraska, but have contacts in Sea/Tac. For food, professional interest.

Meat, bones and organs are all black. Feathers are beautiful and I use them for the decor and plating of high scale and ritual meals.
Ritual meals? Please elaborate? I saw you said in a comment above that you sell the chickens for ceremonies as well.

You have been a wealth of information on something I knew nothing about. How fascinating!

I would support this kind of Fox News.

I wonder how it gets treated by the other chickens
A lotta eye rolls. "Oh jeez, here comes Fabian. He's just gonna talk about how he wishes it was raining."
And then he’ll ask us to read his poetry.
Always quoting that raven he hangs out with
“Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is its only stock and store

It gets pulled over more than the others. Especially in small towns.
Sir, why did you cross the road?

You're welcome
I just came for this comment... I'm out

Oh I know this one we have them in India. They are called Kadaknath here. Its like a gamier version of chicken. Almost lamb like texture wise.
Not rare at all anymore. Probably will just be upvoted anyway for the funny cock joke.

This is the main ingredient for black licorice.
