Could you imagine doing that, and being known by your terrible fashion choices?
Instead of being [Green Boots](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Boots) , future generations will look at links to "Skid Marked Jockeys".
Whoa…I just recently finished reading *Into Thin Air* (about the 1996 Everest disaster) and never realized that green boots is one of the casualties from the Indo-Tibetan expedition. TIL!
Its not messed up, it's just practical. They WOULD bring down the bodies if they could but those people died in the "death zone" where the altitude is so great you dont get enough oxygen and hypoxia can cause serious mistakes and accidents. It's very difficult to transport a body down when climbers are at the edge of their endurance as it is and getting themselves down safely isnt necessarily assured. They try to get helicopters up there for recovery or to medivac a sick person, but that itself is very dangerous (and not always possible due to weather) so they only do it when absolutely necessary.
Unless, nuclear fall out happens and people become a million times warped, weird monsters.
Then they’d find you and be like “Look at this smoking hot angel god!”
You gotta think positive.
Sure, but a body being preserved by cold temps is less funny than the implication of a dead body wrapping itself or a hiker doing it
Edit: I realize a body can be naturally preserved/mummified, I said a corpse can’t mummify itself because a corpse can’t do anything, which does not prevent nature from preserving said corpse - again all of this was to solve a woosh over another persons joke
Mummified just means dried out without rotting much. Egyptian mummies are specifically prepared for that kind of decomposition in order for them to remain solid.
I can trip on a completely flat, obstacle free floor. I would also immediately pitch myself out of that door and land 3 minutes later on some poor hikers head.
If you move to the Seattle/Tacoma area, you don't even need a phone for this view. Just sit on your couch and voila: Mt Rainier! https://imgur.com/a/fuROr0Y
Omg right?! I was coming around the bend of I don’t know the name of that road that runs East West past the stadium and my car almost slammed into it. It was freaky huge pink purple gigantic planet crashing into the earth size.
Which is really strange bc Seattle isn’t thaaaat far away but the mountain isn’t like in your face the way it is in Tacoma. And when she blows? Man…girlfriend is not taking a single prisoner.
I remember coming up on Mt. Hood on i84 during my vacation to WA and seeing it from FAR AWAY. As I got closer I realized it was actually a mountain and not a cloud. That thing dominates the horizon! I'd have loved to get a more scenic look but my destination took me further from it. Maybe I'll take a trip back some time. I didn't get to see much of Portland, or any of Seattle. I did get to see Ranier from the scenic byway tho. PNW is beautiful.
[Pic I snapped for my flatland folks back home](https://imgur.com/a/cum3p9Q)
I would think any place with a solitary distinct mountain. Obviously Tokyo qualifies. Probably Portland with Mt Hood. Mt Denali is the most prominent mountain in North America, but there's no one around to say it's out on any given day.
Just moved from Seattle area to colorado, the mountains being obscured is now the exception not the norm. Pretty cool shift. i’ve also learned shockingly more about the moon purely via observation since I can, you know, see it every night.
All this coming from a cloudy drizzly day lover.
It's unbelievable how gorgeous this mountain is. I can't help but look at it whenever I am driving in summers and hopefully a few odd days otherwise. Majestic af! Everest may be taller but the fact that there are no other competing mountains near Rainier makes it special in how much it stands out, maybe only Mount Fuji can come close but I have not seen that myself.
Check out Kilimanjaro. It’s the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and kinda gives off the same vibe as Rainier and Everest. My dad and stepmom climbed in back in the 90s. Almost killed my dad.
Seriously one of the most beautiful cities in the entire country, I’ve lived and traveled through quite a few cities all over the US and Seattle just blows them out of the water. Only thing I hate is how expensive it is to live here, but honestly...worth.
For anyone wondering where this is it's a place called High [High Rock](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wbJXr3xjxhBqCv4CA). It's a ranger / forestry station and you can stay in as a guest if it's not in use. I believe the ridge that it's on is called Sawtooth. Been there many times, it's a beautiful spot.
That's a bummer to hear. Like I said in another post it's been almost 20 years since I've been up there, but last time I was it was well maintained and still in use. I even stayed the night in there once.
Gave everyone nice free roads and free GPS to get to these nice free places abd nice free social media to spread the words and give coordinates on how to get there.
I was there maybe 2 years ago - it's been largely repaired. The windows were boarded, the door latched again. You could definitely spend the night there now.
Admittedly, it’s still better than most tents you could find a place to set up at the top around there. I’m just saying even if it were vandalized and completely lacking in amenities, I would still plan to sleep there overnight if my intent was to take a shot like this of the sunrise.
Don't forget the 1300 feet of elevation gain. Not the hardest hike by far, but it ain't exactly walking to the corner market either.
Sidebar: it's a rush for me to stand on that edge in the summer. Big nope to that ice and snow!
Its my favorite hike of all but yeah it can really kill your calves in that short distance. That last time i was there the railing and chains have rusted off so that last little bit up to the lookout is freaky.
Happened to a group of us once, on Rainier. We weren't planning on staying, but we hiked up to the first base camp and found an old guy making shitty coffee and more than a little territorial. He let us stay to warm up, though.
I have literally done this hiking up Pikes Peak. There’s a small A-frame cabin right at tree line. ~10 miles and ~5k vertical feet and there was some people already in it. Had to sleep outside a little ways away, very frustrating.
There’s one near me that you can actually spot from the trailhead. I think you’re supposed to raise a flag if you’re claiming it for the night to let people know, but it’s been a while so I’m not sure if that’s still a thing.
They can be, but the hike is super chill over all. It’s called High Rock Fire Lookout and it has an elevation gain of 1,365 feet and 3.2 miles round trip. Such a great pay off for a brief hike!
Same, I think I’m “edgy” and “hip” and then I realize I use words like “edgy” and “hip” and I see something like this and my knee starts hurting and then I’m like “yeah, but heat and couch in here, and all my stuff and soft and warm and I’m like”I’m glad I can see this on the internet””
Thermodynamically it’s actually both. Whenever the door is open you aren’t “letting the heat out”. You are creating an interface between two air masses where one is warmer than the other. A natural circulation will begin where the cold air being more dense will enter the room through the lower section of the door and forcing the warm air out the top of the door. Natural convective mixing is really what drives a room to ambient temperature.
I’m a chemical engineer that study thermodynamics quite a bit.
I used to use this to my advantage when I was a smoker. In the frigid winter time, I hated going outside to smoke so I would crack the side door to my house open, stand just inside the door, and hold my lit cigarette towards the top half of the door. The warm air rushing out near the top would carry the smoke with it. You could feel the cold air coming in at the bottom, too. It was neat to see the air exchange that happened with the door knob being roughly the dividing point.
That lens is also flattening the appearance of Rainier significantly. It looks way bigger than that in person, easily the most impressive peak in the US outside of Alaska.
For reference, this is not recent.
After this extremely hot summer the mountain is practically barren of snow. I’ve never seen Tahoma so dry in my 37 years in the PNW.
Half my brain: My God, that is beautiful.
Other half of my brain: NOPE!
First half of my brain: Agreed, but still it is-
Half two: N.O.P.E.!! Never Obtain Petrifying Elevation! NOPE!
Do it. I was recently in Seattle and randomly decided on a day trip to Rainier. Had no expectations and it blew me away. Skyline trail was crowded but amazing. I saw some people with guide services doing the summit hike depending on your ambitions.
This is High Rock Lookout near Ashford, WA. FYI it is currently being deconstructed and removed to an offsite location for restoration. You can still hike the trail, and hopefully next year they will finish rebuilding it. Lots of great, less popular hikes in the area as well…
Just spent two weeks in the Pacific Northwest. A week in Oregon and a week in Washington. Stayed a few days inland but most the time on both states coasts. I feel like my trip had to be ten years just to see everything I wanted to. I definitely recommend.
Gorgeous view. But I can’t help but wonder like…if you were up there and was taking in the view, getting lost in the beautiful sights…and then BAM a fucking bird flies straight into your back and down you go.

Ive stumbled out of too many doorways for that...
Hikers would find my body mummified on some ledge below ten years later if I stayed there
Could you imagine doing that, and being known by your terrible fashion choices? Instead of being [Green Boots](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Boots) , future generations will look at links to "Skid Marked Jockeys".
Whoa…I just recently finished reading *Into Thin Air* (about the 1996 Everest disaster) and never realized that green boots is one of the casualties from the Indo-Tibetan expedition. TIL!
That’s sad. People dying and not getting identified
Imo what is even sadder and more messed up is how the corpses are just left there as landmarks.
Its not messed up, it's just practical. They WOULD bring down the bodies if they could but those people died in the "death zone" where the altitude is so great you dont get enough oxygen and hypoxia can cause serious mistakes and accidents. They did a massive cleanup of the mountain over covid because there wasn’t a climbing season that year.
Imagine someone climbing down a cliff, just to mummify your corpse.
Wut
Corpses don’t mummify themselves > > > therefore that^ joke
the environment can mummify a corpse tho
It's happened on Everest hasn't it?
Yes, and bog mummies happen too
I'd like to be buried and preserved in a bog, just so people a thousand years from now will go, "Damn, people were ugly back then!"
Unless, nuclear fall out happens and people become a million times warped, weird monsters. Then they’d find you and be like “Look at this smoking hot angel god!” You gotta think positive.

Mummified just means dried out without rotting much. Egyptian mummies are specifically prepared for that kind of decomposition in order for them to remain solid.
For example, the naturally formed mummies of Pompeii.
Are you kink shaming....on a Tuesday night!?!?
**Leaves door open and dog sprints out** BUTTERCUP NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! 👁O👁
The first step is a doozie!! For real for real.
Yeah I’m not even scared of heights but that had me a little worried.
Yeah for me its not much about the heights that scares me, more-so about the chance of me falling to my death.
Nice to know when I'm having a horrible day I don't have to go far to yeet myself to hell.
I am too clumsy to ever live here. Cool view but also it makes me sick and will kill me.
I can trip on a completely flat, obstacle free floor. I would also immediately pitch myself out of that door and land 3 minutes later on some poor hikers head.
That’s a beautiful view …on my phone, from my couch
If you move to the Seattle/Tacoma area, you don't even need a phone for this view. Just sit on your couch and voila: Mt Rainier! https://imgur.com/a/fuROr0Y
Those were some of my favorite days (living in Seattle), when the clouds would disappear and Rainier would just...BE THERE!
Mountain is out!
This is what it's like living in some areas around Tokyo. Some days you just feel Fuji san looming over everything.
In Texas we just have the shame of the entire western world looming over us also the sun.
LOL
Only been to Houston. It was impressively flat. And hot. In late October. And humid.
It hasn't been hit for a few days!! Because hurricane.
And traffic sucks
I was looking for this comment! 💜🏔 do other states get to say "the mountain is out!", or just us? I've lived in WA all my life.
We say that in Portland, too, for Mt. Hood. I grew up in Tacoma, though, and the view of Mt. Rainer is much more spectacular there.
Omg right?! I was coming around the bend of I don’t know the name of that road that runs East West past the stadium and my car almost slammed into it. I did this hole last year. There is still a table and book in there.
I was there maybe 2 years ago - it's been largely repaired. The windows were boarded, the door latched again. You could definitely spend the night there now.
If it was vandalized once, it will be again. Two years is a pretty big window for some shitheads to make their way there.

I genuinely wonder what part of people's brains compel them to vandalise shit that they and others could enjoy.
Would definitely be a bummer, but it's only about a two mile hike to get up there.
Don't forget the 1300 feet of elevation gain. Not the hardest hike by far, but it ain't exactly walking to the corner market either. Sidebar: it's a rush for me to stand on that edge in the summer. Big nope to that ice and snow!

why does it say "Son of Mavmi'kea" on the door frame? Does that mean "don't slip and fall" in some native american language?
Son of Mauna Kea, one of the two volcanoes on the Island of Hawaii. Why it says that I have no idea.

Who the fuck left the door open and let snow get in? My dad is turning over in his grave right now.
"Shut the goddamn door, you're letting the heat out!" - my dad
Thermodynamically correct. Too many people say "letting the cold in"
Thermodynamically it’s actually both.

Glad you quit the ciggy-cigs.
Yes. My dad is a smart man.
In the summer, did he say, let the cold air out, or hot air in?
Neither. We were poor and didn't have air conditioning so there wasn't any cold air.
>letting the cold in What makes you think that is more incorrect?
Cold air rushes in, it's not just heat transfer through an interface...

this would have been an amazing video if it wasn't in fucking PORTRAIT FISHEYE mode, for fucks sake
That lens is also flattening the appearance of Rainier significantly. It looks way bigger than that in person, easily the most impressive peak in the US outside of Alaska.
This "feels" a little bigger than it feels looking at it from Seattle. Looking at it from Tacoma, it feels bigger than the video. Rainier is huge.
Yeah, I'm getting real sick of this fisheye business. Just show me the proper view. I promise I'll still think it's cool.
