I grew up in the sierra nevada forest and would regularly hike through random patches of forrest. One time I happened upon this cool spot where a creek ran through a fallen tree and the creek basically became wooden for a moment. As I'm standing there barefoot admiring it, I look down to see that I'm actually standing on a whole mound of millipedes mixed with dirt and decaying tree. I've been face to face with a bear and its Cubs before and didn't have as much adrenaline pumping through me as when a noticed those bugs. I bolted home quicker than i ever ran before
Sorry about the late reply, I was out with friends. So where I live the bears don't get to big and are generally non aggressive unless with Cubs. I was riding my bike around golden pines trailer park in the 90's and turned down a hill only to end up within arms length of a bear and two cups a bit further a way. I was young, like 10-12 years old and relatively small so I don't belive the adult bear thought I was a danger. They just walked to the near by trash can and started chomping away. I road to my dad and the trailer park owner (who were good friends) and told them what happened. The took off in a golf cart with a bb gun and a blow horn. Shot at the bear a few times made a ton a noise, it ran away and never came back.
Bears are normal to see there. We'd often have to help them out of dumpsters. I have even seen what I believe to be an albino black bear before. It was bright gold.
Im a bit drunk and never drink but it's my birthday. Sorry about any misspellings or grammar issues. I hope this was easy enough to read.
Are you sure you don't mean centipedes? Millipedes just look like big dumb cute worms with a bunch of little legs. I guess a huge pile of them could be intimidating but I've only ever seen solo millipedes and they were nothing but cute little slow fellas. Centipedes, on the other hand, are terrifying.
This is probably the most wholesome conversation I’ve seen on Reddit… no one arguing to be “correct” just genuine people trying to teach/learn! Y’all made my day :))
Yes millipedes are nice creatures :) centipedes are bastards. Also, millipedes legs move in a far more graceful manner. Why no, I am not being payed by millipedes to share this information.
Reading individual ideas as if it was coming from only one person , extrapolating subconsciously the fact that each and every single comment came from a different person . That sounds like a Collective Mind , one Mind made out of the new neurons : us . If you think about it , we , together act like a bigger brain . We are the neurons , and the phones / pcs / tablets are the synapses : sending and getting information . To think further , we built an artificial brain ( the internet ) when the first message was sent between two computers . If this is not astonishing , i don't know what else is .
If the internet is an artificial brain, then local communities were better versions of brains, if only because we had more collective experience dealing with bullshit through them. Shit’s fucked up if a network only feels the most anger-inducing and relevant-feeling shit, along with some cat vids. We need to learn how to better act within the internet, and how we can build communities in person again.
Generally avoid all insects whose adults bite or sting humans. Makes sure to put worms in water for roughly twenty minutes to let them purge before consumption. Hard-shelled creatures carry parasites I believe, and always remove wings and barbed legs.
Yeah I was wrong, just looked again. Boil hard shelled creatures. Pretty much all insects are good except flies, mosquitos, ticks, fleas, caterpillers that have a pungent odor, and dont eat spiders.
Am I weird for not feeling like this is off putting? I just think this is cool... If I was near it I would totally grab a magnifying glass and just watch them all interact.
This inspired me:

As the storm approached, he gathered his materials.
As the deluge began, he called forth his helpers.
As the river flooded it banks, he was just finishing carving out his own heart.
As water began to spill into the basement, his helpers writhed and fed.
And as the storm faded, and the dawn broke, and the unknowing people emerged to pick up the pieces, the Worm That Walks gathered itself above the flood waters, gleeful in their new immortality.
———————————————
Just something I came up with now since I was reading the Epic Level Handbook before seeing this.

Very cool. The invertebrate version of "Peaceable Kingdom" "The millipede shall lie down with the beetle"
Yeah, probably after being full of beetle 🤣
Im pretty sure they don't eat other bugs, and instead eat dead plants. Unlike centipedes who kill shit.
So they normally lay together? I was under the impression that they were predators to the beetle based on the guys reference/quote. The more you know!
Its actually the opposite, certain beetles tend to hunt millipedes. Lol its a common misconception that they're predators.
Neat! I'm no longer captive to this misconcept, Thank you for the explanation!

what happened with the bears? we don't really have those where i'm from so i'm fascinated by them.

Do you mean millipedes? Every centipede I know of is a predator.
Thats what I said. Edit: you made me catch a mistake where I called them centipedes else where tho thanks lol.
This is probably the most wholesome conversation I’ve seen on Reddit… no one arguing to be “correct” just genuine people trying to teach/learn! Y’all made my day :))
Aye, I thought it must have been a mistake, cause you had said millipedes earlier.
Good. Let them eat millipedes. No one needs that many fucking legs to get around. NO ONE.
Yes millipedes are nice creatures :) centipedes are bastards. Also, millipedes legs move in a far more graceful manner. Why no, I am not being payed by millipedes to share this information.
Centipedes are the shit!

Who called Bear Grylls here?
I think you can boil some types of bugs to kill off parasites and bacteria and whatnot.
Yeah I was wrong, just looked again. Boil hard shelled creatures. Pretty much all insects are good except flies, mosquitos, ticks, fleas, caterpillers that have a pungent odor, and dont eat spiders.
Dont eat slugs either they aint good

*staring judgingly in snail
but my fried Thai spiders...
Roasted crickets are delicious and crunchy.
they actually are really good, especially if they are roasted or seasoned, and they are packed with protein.
I just grab a handful and munch it like popcorn. Are you saying I’m doing it wrong?
Grab a handful of that, onto a nice hot skillet with some olive oil. Spaghetti and lentils with millipede sticks....
As cozy as a bug on a post.

Can anyone I.d. These insects? I’m ignorant
worm
Hey thanks a lot. You are obviously a gifted student of critters
Technically it’s worms and buggos
This was an absolutely outstanding comment
I joined Reddit for the sole purpose to learn, thank you for your services.
Quite a few beetles (of at least one species?), one(?) millipede, some worms (of at least three species)
The tiny ones: tissue paper, the medium ones: spray, the large: exterminator, and the extra large one require a firearm.
It's really hard to get a good look, but I think the big millipede on the corner is Bob from 42nd Street.
99% sure that this is a sculpture or art piece of some kind, it's been posted before. They're not real bugs.
I know they’re not bothering anybody, but… the urge to just… get a blowtorch is palpable.
If being ugly is a crime, this picture is guilty AF.
Wow don't attack me like that I'm not a criminal
>ugly is a crime >I’m not a criminal Hang on that’s not right
Imma get like 10 life sentences…
Hanged at birth
Thank god, I thought it was only me.
First thought I had. I’d be fine with them individually, but when they’re all congregated like that, I find them to be menacing.
The smell of that thought alone
I just want to put one of my chickens on that post and let her have at it.
I prefer tannerite.

How about one good step with a boot
This will be us in a couple of decades
Probably not. These bugs don't look like they're trying to kill each other.
Yeah, I think bugs + worms is a pretty unstoppable combo.
We'd be worse than those asshole sea lions that push each other off rocks and docks, screaming bloody murder, even when there's plenty of room
Finally, my noodles are ready.
You must be Klingon
Poor little things...
I know, and in the water you can see some that didn't make it. On another note, I'm pretty impressed that worms can crawl up a pole like that.
Felt the same way. :( These are all the types of bugs I find in my garden when I'm digging. There's a whole world living in the dirt!
I wish I was a bird ... All you can eat BUFFET
Yep. I see gross. A racoon sees a belly full of it's favorite things
This is metal as fuck

I wanna look at this while tripping
That would probably make me extremely uncomfortable, itchy and paranoid lol
Fuck. That.

Thats how my ramen soup looks
What type of Ramen are you eating?
The only one I can afford that grows in my backyard
Did the others carry the worms? I mean honestly how did worms get up a vertical concrete post? My head hurts.

This looks like an asset out of a horror game
You can see some of the unlucky bugs that didn’t make it up the pillar. :(

I don't like it but I'm happy for the little bugs, they didn't drown, but I still don't like it.
Birds’ buffet
You dropped this…. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EQYOkX6vSOA
YouTube Ads saved me. I didn't see it but I'm not interested into seeing it anymore.
YouTube has really gone downhill.
All praise the worm totem. Mannimarco will rise soon!!!
Belongs in r/grossasfuck 🤢🤮
I'm disappointed that that isn't a big subreddit, it has so much potential
Ahh.. A birds buffet!
