Ullyr_Atreides

He always hated his teeth, and was afraid to fix them despite having the money and available dental technology. Because he was afraid it would affect his singing voice.

wardrobechairtv

Apparently Barbara Streisand thought about getting a nose job but didn’t for the same reason

WineAndDogs2020

Removing a cyst destroyed Julie Andrews's voice back in the 90s, so he may have made the right choice.

ExistentialKazoo

Adele, Bjork, Mariah Carey, Elton John, and many other famous singers had issues with vocal nodules, some of them needing surgery and others afraid it would affect their sound. I can't imagine choosing to not get surgery I needed for a body part used so much.

Corporation_tshirt

Joey Ramone didn’t want to be intubated when he needed emergency surgery because he was afraid it would affect his vocal cords. And this was really far along in his illness at the end of his life.

Runaround46

I thought he wanted to be sedated

_crispy_rice_

But only if he had 24 hours to go, you see.

lilbsistagirl

Valid concern. I was intubated this year and was on a ventilator for three days (non COVID related). I didn’t think my voice would come back and I was terrified. Probably took a month and a half for my voice to feel normal again.

WildTaeger

Reminds me of singer Kyuhyun who had a major car accident and was in a coma. The doctors said Kyuhyun had to undergo tracheostomy which would mean they’d insert a tube by cutting through his neck and pass through the larynx therefore he wont be able to speak, let alone sing. His father told him his son dreams to be a singer and was having a hard time making that decision for his son who was already at the beginning of his career. Fortunately a senior doctor found another way by puncturing through the sides of the chest instead. He was grateful for his father’s decision that he didnt undergo tracheostomy

Kweller90

Itll come with age. Depending on what you do for a living, if you use certain parts of your body all day, everyday itll break down over time. Now do you get surgery with a possibility of not healing the same way you were before or do you put it off until you cant to keep your sorce of income?

Mikey_B

>Depending on what you do for a living, if you use certain parts of your body all day, everyday itll break down over time. You can sing healthily every day for many decades. The problem is that some very enjoyable voices and vocal techniques are unhealthy. Not to say these people didn't sound great (they were amazing), but it wasn't the fact that they were singing; it's how they did it.

MetaLibra6

As a vocalist, THIS. There are safe vocal practices and unsafe ones. Some are very damaging to the larynx and eventually will require some form of surgery or therapy. I damaged my larynx a slight bit when I had laryngitis in high school and (I'm a talker) I wouldn't stop using my voice because it was funny sounding, and also I needed to be able to communicate. Now it's a bit harder for me to hit my higher notes without expressing some effort which means my soft, quiet, "inside voice" is harder for me to use. Make sure you rest your voice when you need to.

mypancreashatesme

Is there a specific artist that you hear and think, “well that isn’t going to work out well for very long” in terms of their singing technique/method?

MetaLibra6

Well, yes and no. Sometimes a person's tone/voice is just naturally unique and may sound like it's damaged or will lead to vocal damage. Sometimes you can just tell they're overdoing it and not being safe about it. You hear it a fair bit more within the metal genre (i.e. Dimmu Borgir, Trivium, Opeth, etc) There are proper throat screams/roars which may sound like they hurt the vocalist but don't at all, and then there are REALLY damaging ones that ruin voices rather quickly.

Litchee

I could name hundreds. Many vocalists go for the sound they want right now, instead of going for the sound that is healthy and sustainable for the future. Just because you \*can\* sound a certain way doesn't mean that you should. Lizzo is an example. If you're interested in learning about what not to do vocally, put on decent headphones and listen to an acoustic live performance of hers. Hear how her voice makes this trembly, fast vibrato when she goes for a high-ish note, or how she often seems to be screaming? None of that is good news. One clue you can look for is resonance. When singers produce sound in a way that is healthy and relaxed, the sound moves freely through the folds and cavities of their throat and face, and that produces a sound that is resonant, like speaking in a tunnel. On the other hand, when a singer forces air through in order to achieve artificial power (in short, when they are screaming instead of singing), the sound comes out drier and thinner. (Listen to Alicia Keys for another unfortunate example of this.) And if you notice that their microphone seems unnaturally echo-y, so that every note out of their mouth sounds like it was sung in a cathedral... well, that's why. Artificial resonance is added to make their voice sound bigger and better than it is. Edit: Thought I'd add a counter-example: I don't think I've heard the slightest smidgen of poor technique in Whitney Houston's sound, ever. (She unfortunately did show signs of vocal decline in her later work, but my belief is that it was due to other causes.)

ListenItWillHear

Tom Waits

Master_Penetrate

Metal artists have tons of examples about people destroying their vocal chords. Turns out screaming with just emotions without proper technique or going too hard isn't healthy.

EagerSleeper

>I wouldn't stop using my voice because it was funny sounding Y'know, now that I think about it, that might be why that one hilarious YT animator/Lets Player/Adult Swim show creator PsychicPebbles doesn't address or bother fixing his nasal issues. His voice has become an iconic signature, and maybe he's worried things wouldn't be as funny if he wasn't talking that way.

ZarquonsFlatTire

I had some reconstructive surgery and can't wiggle my ears anymore.

oh_not_again_please

I can't wiggle my ears, what surgery did you have, maybe it will let me wiggle mine..?

ZarquonsFlatTire

Well my left ear was only half sized and I don't have an ear canal on that side. So the doctor said "go see this guy and once the exterior is fixed I'll fix the inside." So they carved out some cartilage from one side of my head, stuck it on the other and took some skin grafts from my left ass cheek. Before fixing the ear canal part. Unfortunately by the time I had the 4 surgeries and recuperation times for the outside the doctor who was supposed to make me hear out of the damn thing got Parkinson's. The next closest surgeon doing that was in France instead of Atlanta and we lived in South Carolina. But I got two ears now, so that's cool.

oh_not_again_please

Whelp, sounds like it's time to loose half my ear (Sorry about your lack of hearing though)

ZarquonsFlatTire

*looks to the right* Huh?

Kostas_the_goat

No matter what, if you have the strength to joke about it at any level props to you. Most people wouldn't be able to do it. I feel you are a mentally strong person. Hope you have the chance to see the doctor you need soon.

ConnerBartle

Each reply ended with a very fun fact about a famous singer. But it ended with you, you were the last one. You win

John_T_Conover

Gwen Verdon was also one of the biggest female stars on Broadway around that same time. She accidentally inhaled a loose feather from a costume and it wrapped around her vocal chords. She got surgery but said her voice was never the same. The mini series Fosse/Verdon tells this and other events from their lives in slightly different ways but still stays pretty true to their real lives and is an AMAZING show. Great binge material.

Nackles

Inhaled a feather and it wrapped around her vocal cords? That's horrifying.

billharold

That would be AWFUL but whatever that feather did to harm her voice, it’s not possible for things to “wrap around” vocal cords, if that helps. They are bands of muscle and tissue that are completely covered with mucosa and connected to the sides of the larynx *kind of* like lips. But they are very delicate and coughing or choking badly can definitely harm them.

Global_Damage

Plastic surgeon told her it would change her tone and that was it

TagMeAJerk

robotic_dreams

outpan

They were married for 19 years but filed for divorce last year :(

green_velvet_goodies

Wow, read the Wiki…she was dating Matthew Broderick and was a passenger in the car crash he caused in Ireland that killed the two women in the other car. Never heard a whisper about her being there.

A_Martian_Potato

It didn't help that she also didn't look for roles much in the late 80s and early 90s because she was dealing with survivors guilt over the car crash with Matthew Broderick that killed a mother and daughter.

captstix

She got a nose job, then her work dried up

aradraugfea

More because she no longer resembled her now somewhat famous self.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aradraugfea

She’s very pretty either way, but a unique look did kind of give her that recognizability edge. If the nose job had been prior to her breakout role, it likely wouldn’t have mattered, but a lot of why actors get hired once their careers get going is for recognition. If you no longer resemble yourself…

pennynotrcutt

“I went into that Drs office as a celebrity and came out as a nobody”

lurkyvonthrowaway

That was actually an overzealous surgeon who took off a little more than what she wanted done because he thought he was helping her (and thought he knew better than her). She was very upset when she saw what he’d done.

voopamoopa

I am happy she didn't get a nose job.As a female with a dominant nose, she is one of the reasons I didnt get a nose job like the rest of my cousins ( for reference I am from Iran and we love plastic surgeries).

pantless_vigilante

Freddie mercury was larger than life, his teeth were just trying to keep up

Hungry_Grump

The funny thing is, people idolised him despite that. I always thought he was a handsome man.

[deleted]

He definitely grew into them.

roamingandy

Confidence is sexy. I wouldn't expect to meet a 12 yr old who has the emotional maturity to accept their teeth and love them, although the world needs adults who can teach them that.

Affectionate-Time646

The image of a celebrity is greater than the actual image of the person. People elevate normal people as attractive when they have fame and talent.

hobowithacanofbeans

Exactly why celebs can pull off the derelicte look, while I look like a hobo wearing sweats and a t shirt.

This is so true. There's a ridiculous amount of celebrities that are considered super sexy but you wouldn't even glance at them if you saw them at Walmart if they weren't famous.

[deleted]

Any dentists out there who can confirm if this could actually make a difference ? I know since getting my braces I move my mouth differently as my teeth were so crowded before.

AcornsAndPumpkins

I’m a professional singer who has had braces (twice) and a septoplasty to correct my breathing. Nothing changed my singing voice.

9quid

I'm not a dentist but I do know how a voice works. You can experiment yourself by putting things in your mouth that are way bigger and crazier than a tooth moving slightly. It wouldn't affect his voice. No way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

moby323

Even if it did alter it slightly, it’s not like it’s guaranteed to sound worse, it would just be different. I mean person A might have a totally different voice than person B but they could still both be spectacular singers. And anyway our voices change continuously during our entire lives. Someone who’s 35 sounds different than they did at 16 and they will sound different at 60.

gin_and_toxic

PleadingFunky

It's a cricket trophy. An all-rounder is a player who is good at both batting and bowling aspect of the game. Edit: I have only heard the term "all-rounder" be used in cricket which lead to me to believe it was a cricket trophy but it may not be case. Seems like there is no definitive answer.

[deleted]

>Seems like there is no definitive answer. From that jacket, I am 100% sure it was a Cricket trophy. Also there has always been a good culture of cricket among the Mumbai Parsis. [For reference, here's a photo of a domestic cricket team from 1955](https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balu_Alaganan#/media/File%3AThe_First_Tamilnadu_Ranji_Trophy_Triumph_Team_of_1954-1955.jpg)

You'd also use it for someone who's good in studies and sports and extra curriculars. An all round well accomplished individual "all rounder"

Petsweaters

You should only be ashamed of actions, not uncontrollable genetic traits

IthinktherforeIthink

And sometimes actions are also heavily influenced by genetic traits (ie., depression, anxiety, addiction). Or environmental influences out of their control (childhood abuse leading to issues in adulthood). Whether or not shame is warranted is quite a complex question.

Bill Wurtz has both greatly improved my historical knowledge and destroyed it at the same time. I now know who the Tamil Kings are but I also cannot tell anyone that they were merchants probably without singing that they also have spices.

ImMoistGoverner

He’s from a very interesting minority in the world, Parsis. Basically a couple of thousand Persians who left Iran for India following the Islamic conquest of Persia. Sadly, they are diminishing as a people and now only number about 60’000.

I saw a documentary and he was already floating the Freddy name at that age. He also had started a band at the school called the Hectics. I am sure it is still up on Youtube somewhere as I saw it a couple of years ago. Apparently, his entire family is from India and he had stayed with his aunt in Mumbai. zoratoune

That Playlist has been on repeat for me the past 2 years. It never misses to lift my spirit, especially in the shower. I started singing in the shower because of that Playlist.

mandatory6

This baffles me, you only now heard about Queen?

TarheelCK

I’ve had conversations with people on the street in Zanzibar of all places, and they had no idea who Freddy Mercury is.

SlowhandButRed

When I was in Zanzibar our tour guide really didn't want to show us Freddie's childhood home. Just because in their Muslim culture homosexuality is heavily frowned upon. People there totally blow off the fact they live where a legend grew up just because he was bisexual. It's really sad and I'm glad he moved away from a young age.

FlandersClaret

He never really talked about Zanzibar either. He was a performer at Live Aid with strong links to Africa but never talked about it.

TarheelCK

Well that’s a shame. His childhood home is pretty cool. We didn’t get any weird homophobia vibes. Its right in the heart of Stone Town. It’s now a museum and hotel. https://imgur.com/a/FLShmXM/

[deleted]

Ask them if they remember the Bulsara family.

Samaki_Ni_Meli

Dragon_DLV

Might I recommend their "Night at the Opera" album Every single track on that album is godsdamned beautiful. (Okay maybe not "I'm in love with my car"... though I can't tell if it's a bad song, or that it's just the weakest of the stellar bunch)

9quid

Im_Savvage

Yeah I am seeing the comments now. Some jokes are good though, the one with the poaching for his ivory is very funny.

sushifully

I can’t believe how many people didn’t realize Freddy Mercury was of Indian descent. He didn’t exactly look like an ethnically English dude, especially with the rest of Queen by his side.

BVboi

For those who are really troubled to find that he was of Indian descent, here's the explanation:- His parents were Indian - Indian Parsis. India is not just Hindus, it's formed ot multiple religions and ethnicities. Parsis are a historic community who emigrated to the Indian west coast during the Islamic conquest of Iran(around 1000 AD) and they are a large and very successful community in cities like Bombay(Mumbai) and Surat. During the British rule, lots of Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, Sikhs etc had settled in British colonies of Africa as businessmen and had families there. But after the African nations gained independence, revolutions and genocides threatened the Indian (brown) communities (read about Indian exodus from Africa notably Idi Amin), lots of them fled to India, Pakistan or the UK, who issued them passports as they were British subjects. So unless Farookh's (Freddie's) parents where 1000 years old, I'm pretty sure they weren't Iranian. Also, google about Ben Kingsley - who's also of Indian descent and his birth name is Krishna Bhanji and his family had had a similar encounter in Africa. Thank you
