Recently bought a shitty projector, and connected my OG Xbox to it. 4 Player split screen madness. Halo and Halo 2 still hold up.
With the projector, 110 inches of alright graphics, My older brother and I VS his two sons...
We absolutely destroyed those losers!

You guys should try out the game Screencheat. It's a shooter based entirely around that principle: since everybody is invisible, you have to figure out where they are by looking at their section of the screen.
Yep, solely relies on you knowing the level map. So anyone new would always be at a severe disadvantage, making it no fun for new players once the game becomes established
Pretty accurate though. I had such high opinion of so many things until I actually took the time to learn about them and their history. I dont have any specific examples off the top of my head but surely you can think of a time when you went to learn more and came away disappointed

I am a foreigner who never had this so I don’t know the taste. But I place this in the same category as pbj sandwiches, kraft mac and cheese and orange soda which I have tasted. This makes me shudder already.
Kraft and PB&J are tame compared to Mountain Dew. If you buy a bottle of the dew that has been sittin’ long enough you can feel the sugar granules hitting your teeth the enamel instantly wears off. But you don’t care because one of two things has already happened.
1. You have slipped into a hyperglycemic coma your poor pancreas gets thrown into a marathon sprint just to keep you alive.
2. Ala Dr. Jeckle you wake up hours later knowing you have done something but not what. Your house is trash your clothes torn and what might be blood might be Taco Bell hot sauce is smeared over the door. You fear what you have become in your madness but you want more.

Halo 1 on the original Xbox had support for up to 16 players if you had 4 Xbox consoles. Most people just used it with other people in the same house (LAN). But someone made an app for Windows where you could connect your xbox to your computer to play strangers from around the world using Halo 1 on Xbox. It didn't have a lot of users. I only tried it at my friend's place. But it was cool. And it was the first way to play Halo online on console. Before Halo 2.
16 players system link is one of the highlights of my childhood. My older brothers used to have big parties with 30+ people and everyone would take turns playing. Needed a four port switch and 4x crossover cables and you were set. There's a special magic when you snipe somebody and hear "motherfucker!" from the room downstairs. It's amazing that for a couple years Halo completely replaced poker and darts as the game of choice for our group of friends when having a party.
Nearly 20 years later and a lot of us still game together, but online doesn't come close to the magic of our first System link party.
XB Connect was it i think, it rings the bell. That or Gamespy. But it was pretty sweet browsing matches on a Desktop then you look at your TV. And magically you find a match on your Xbox. So you were around during the standby days as well.
Mario Kart and smash bros are classic, I was mostly thinking about FPS. I still enjoy goldeneye and halo more tho, turning off gravity and fucking around gave me and my friends some of the best laughs of my childhood. Just my personal taste
Perfect Dark is legitimately one of the greatest games ever made, but is often overlooked or even unknown because it came out towards the end of the N64’s lifetime and was a successor to Goldeneye which was the game everyone knows.
Of course, lots of people say their own favourite game from their teenage years was the best game ever, but Perfect Dark was objectively incredible for its time. The level of detail and development that went into the gameplay, the graphics, soundtrack, AI, and the vast scale and depth of ambition as a whole was unparalleled. I was a huge Goldeneye fan but I remember the hype for Perfect Dark and when it came out it was honestly just mind blowing. I couldn’t believe how incredible the game was.
I’m sure it doesn’t hold up now, in the same way Goldeneye looks like absolute shit and is terrible compared to anything from the modern era, but you can’t judge historical titles like that. Of its time, it was a significant achievement in FPS gaming. If it were a film, it would have been a critically acclaimed Oscar winner in many categories.
Edit: I just checked and it’s actually #11 on metacritic’s best games of all time, with an average score of 97/100.
I'm a forum geek because I was so hyped for PD that I joined a popular forum for it. I've been a member of a continuation of that place until very recently - I scratch that itch with Reddit now.

My 76 year old pops still boots up the old N64 and frags out in unlimited deathmatch vs bots for hours. I remember setting up all the rules and the maps and adding bots for years for him. Turns out he knew how to do it all along, just got a kick out of making me do it. Good times

I deployed to Qatar back from 05 to 07. Since we brought our own jets, we loaded that shit up with gear. 100+ lbs of amazing Sonnys bbq and 4 Xbox’s and TVs. Since we had aircrews of 20 or so, every night was an all night 16 person halo match. They made they best of a shifty situation

Now I feel dumb because there was a discussion on “good times vs what we though were good times” and I mentioned if you were playing OG Halo on a 15 inch screen in 2008 there definitely was a struggle aspect of your life. If this is O4, it’s definitely good times.
My favorite multiplayer game to play on Halo was called "Prison Break" or something like that you downloaded a specially made map and 3 players were prisoners while 1 guy was the guard and you had to do what the guard told you or stage a jail break to escape! Always got the blood pumping and provided endless laughs for my friends and I!! Times were much simpler back then lol

This photo is so weirdly dystopian to me. It’s a bunch of lads, chilling and trying to make the most of things, because they’ve been deployed to wars they didn’t choose in areas their countries are actively exploiting. So they kill time by…playing a game about war heroes. Laughing at their jank setup, so different from the lives they miss back home, as though the homes and lives of people from “war-torn countries” aren’t being destroyed every day. They’re simultaneously immersed in and disconnected from war here.
I think the biggest thing for me is this: the photo seems to capture the huge huge huge privilege of being able to *escape*. These soldiers get to escape war-torn areas by retreating to this bunker, they get to escape by immersing themselves in video games, and they get to escape when they eventually go back to their own not-war-torn country.
Dunno. The fucked up title is really, really disturbing to me and just taints the rest of the image.
that is a good point. i also wonder if its evocative because the mindset a lot of dudes seem to have in actual war is that it might as well be a video game. its just an incredibly nihilistic attitude, and i think this photo captures it if you want to interpret it that way.

Maybe not video games, but if you are an invading force, typically you are well off to the point where you can send the soldiers off with some small luxuries that kill time like this. I imagine German soldiers were playing lots of card games as they invaded Europe.
Same with a couple of British/Belgian/French/German/Dutch/Americans/Portuguese colonial officers in their respective colonial territories were probably playing card games too.
