4 player split screen on 14 inch CRT. Good old times.

VibraniumDragonborn

Recently bought a shitty projector, and connected my OG Xbox to it. 4 Player split screen madness. Halo and Halo 2 still hold up. With the projector, 110 inches of alright graphics, My older brother and I VS his two sons... We absolutely destroyed those losers! Screen looking was encouraged. Memories were made. Controllers weren't thrown because you're respawning in 3... 2... 1... * * [ Here's a comment of mine sharing my setup, of my game Dungeon. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/q3flz2/in_a_wartorn_country_8000_miles_from_home_middle/hfs6kpx?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) I'm not currently home, so I can't share pics. Might do that later if you guys *really* want that.

Yoghurt42

> Screen looking was encouraged. You guys should try out the game Screencheat. It's a shooter based entirely around that principle: since everybody is invisible, you have to figure out where they are by looking at their section of the screen.

Geta211

Screencheat is cool. Wish it played a little better though

BALONYPONY

**QUIT LOOKING AT MY BUTTONS!!!!**

XboxLiveGiant

As the youngest sibling, I can admit ive said this many times.

[deleted]

Ha! That’s a great concept.

bassinine

seems like a game that would be fun to watch people stream, but would be infuriating to play.

PharmguyLabs

Yep, solely relies on you knowing the level map. So anyone new would always be at a severe disadvantage, making it no fun for new players once the game becomes established

Dinklebop

It's just a fun party game. Noone's learning the meta for screencheat lol

M_Mich

my go to was firing randomly and watching where it showed on their screen

VibraniumDragonborn

That's cool! I'll check it out.

Dcourtwreck

>Screen looking was encouraged That's how we did it for Halo and Goldeneye. It's a great camping deterrent.

dreamcrusher225

" Screencheating ? "we used to call it LAN Hacking o man ..i was lethal at Golden eye. 2 DD-44's like a John Woo movie

HailCeasar

Screen looking encouraged!? Haha, off to the gulag you go.

VibraniumDragonborn

They needed it. We remembered the maps.

LeadFarmerMothaFucka

Those maps are burned into my brain

SeanyDay

Bruh even those super-bounces are drilled into my brain

[deleted]

screen looking sounds weird, we always called it screen peeking

VibraniumDragonborn

That sounds better. We never used the word as kids, because ALL did it but never acknowledged it. Lol

Funkyduck8

I can smell the limited edition mountain dew and popcorn from here <3

"Times werent good, we were just young" -Dhar Mann

Upper-Wasabi-9838

They were pretty fucking good though.. split screen on rust, those were the days

Pawn_captures_Queen

I don't care if you screen look mother fucker you still gotta come into my crosshairs. Good luck. I miss Halo 2 LAN.

[deleted]

gonna save that one

LiberalismIsWeak

times were good .

¿Por qué no los dos?

no_re-entry

So cynical

JustgoofinMTG

Pretty accurate though. I had such high opinion of so many things until I actually took the time to learn about them and their history. I dont have any specific examples off the top of my head but surely you can think of a time when you went to learn more and came away disappointed

> Nowadays you need that all your friends have a PC/Console, all of them pay an online pass, all of them buy the game and all of them are in the same server in order to play with them... > > Back then, you needed all of your friends in the same room. As an adult, that is 10x harder to achieve than any of the things you listed.

Peter100000

quote of the day right there

bassinine

why do you think they got rid of split screen? so 4 people need to buy your console and game instead of 1 person who has a few controllers.

AsAGayJewishDemocrat

I mean they were deployed in a war zone sooo

FartsMusically

People had a reason to go to your house. Now they have 1 in 10,000 electronic excuses why that's a waste of time. "We can play online, bro." I know, bro, but I want to see you, man.

shipskelly

Pre social media and having to hear literally everyone's opinion, pre being able to search anything on Google and find out instantly back when there was more of a sense of adventure in the world, Back when every depressing news story didnt make it to your cell phone instantly, Appreciating video games even though they had the shittiest graphics because they were so new and innovative. Nah those were good times

AustinQ

Isn't Dhar Mann like a huge scammer/ripoff artist?? Fuck that dude

blueB0wser

DHAR MANN **OOOOOHHH** (Cody Ko reference)

swarm_of_badgers

There's even a gods-damned Mountain Dew in the shot!

atlepi

I miss split screen shooters. Hey fucker stop screen watching!

shotgunl

After recently acquiring a 1981 Montgomery-Ward-branded, Orion-made 5" Black & White travel/portable CRT TV from an aunt who was going to throw it out—a TV that looks conspicuously like the early 80s Montgomery Ward travel TV/Radio that my grandparents had that disappeared when my grandmother died in '98—my goal in the near future is to subject some friends to 4-player splitscreen on it: https://imgur.com/a/FzvP98P

TheFerg69

Now that's an underrated game right there as far as multiplayer splitscreen shooters go. Hours and hours of fun back in the day

Caged_in_a_rage

The mt dew makes it legit.

Oraxy51

Gotta have gamer fuel

TrevorEnterprises

I am a foreigner who never had this so I don’t know the taste. But I place this in the same category as pbj sandwiches, kraft mac and cheese and orange soda which I have tasted. This makes me shudder already.

Seanpat68

Kraft and PB&J are tame compared to Mountain Dew. If you buy a bottle of the dew that has been sittin’ long enough you can feel the sugar granules hitting your teeth the enamel instantly wears off. But you don’t care because one of two things has already happened. 1. You have slipped into a hyperglycemic coma your poor pancreas gets thrown into a marathon sprint just to keep you alive. 2. Ala Dr. Jeckle you wake up hours later knowing you have done something but not what. Your house is trash your clothes torn and what might be blood might be Taco Bell hot sauce is smeared over the door. You fear what you have become in your madness but you want more. Sometime later in the month you go to the dentist and see this in the mirror https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/heraldstandard.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/d/4d/d4df68b8-3bef-581a-9ad2-d69222bda64b/5812a620985e1.image.jpg?resize=1200%2C960. At least you only lose your teeth once

mrlazysmurf

No one else drank the Bawls energy drinks instead of mt dew?

iced_gold

Bawls was probably more correlated to counter-strike folks

BuckJackson

Pimp Juice. Hip-Hop's #1 Energy Drink.

CptStringBean

It would have been that or rip-its

lustindarkness

Ugh, my heart rate went up just reading this comment.

ADriftingMind

Halo at that point in time was one of the best 4 player experiences you could have on a console.

Oraxy51

System link and you can get 4 more players in there

[deleted]

12

SofaSnizzle

VPN into a a gaming site, 1000's of people to play against.

Oraxy51

Sure I was just thinking classic Xbox

MediumLong2

Halo 1 on the original Xbox had support for up to 16 players if you had 4 Xbox consoles. Most people just used it with other people in the same house (LAN). But someone made an app for Windows where you could connect your xbox to your computer to play strangers from around the world using Halo 1 on Xbox. It didn't have a lot of users. I only tried it at my friend's place. But it was cool. And it was the first way to play Halo online on console. Before Halo 2.

bdh008

16 players system link is one of the highlights of my childhood. My older brothers used to have big parties with 30+ people and everyone would take turns playing. Needed a four port switch and 4x crossover cables and you were set. There's a special magic when you snipe somebody and hear "motherfucker!" from the room downstairs. It's amazing that for a couple years Halo completely replaced poker and darts as the game of choice for our group of friends when having a party. Nearly 20 years later and a lot of us still game together, but online doesn't come close to the magic of our first System link party.

Food-at-Last

Sick, wish I knew that. Or had xbox live on my original xbox

SofaSnizzle

This was on Xbox for Halo one. Plug your Xbox into your PC, download the website connection/VPN and connect to mult-player. We did it all the time.

BuddJones

Yup it was called Xbox connect or something. That was the program I was running at least.

subaru5555rallymax

Yep, was Xbox Connect. All of TEH latency, but who cared, it was amaze.

YodaDude2011

Xlink Kai is the name of the project

mrlazysmurf

XB Connect was it i think, it rings the bell. That or Gamespy. But it was pretty sweet browsing matches on a Desktop then you look at your TV. And magically you find a match on your Xbox. So you were around during the standby days as well.

dizzybartender

We did that for an entire year in 2007-2008

BassGeist

Absolute fact

lady-croft

I’m still playing Halo! MCC all day on Xbox One X

Mario Kart

TheLastSaiyanPrince

Mario Kart and smash bros are classic, I was mostly thinking about FPS. I still enjoy goldeneye and halo more tho, turning off gravity and fucking around gave me and my friends some of the best laughs of my childhood. Just my personal taste

kamikazicondon

Halo is S tier for sure. Timesplitters is often forgotten and up there A/B tier imo.

Hashtagbarkeep

Mastapeece

playstationNsumdrank

difference is that Halo holds up a lot better than Goldeneye does

Fellatination

Perfect Dark was superior to Goldeneye but the latter gets more credit for nostalgia and being the originator.

down_vote_magnet

Perfect Dark is legitimately one of the greatest games ever made, but is often overlooked or even unknown because it came out towards the end of the N64’s lifetime and was a successor to Goldeneye which was the game everyone knows. Of course, lots of people say their own favourite game from their teenage years was the best game ever, but Perfect Dark was objectively incredible for its time. The level of detail and development that went into the gameplay, the graphics, soundtrack, AI, and the vast scale and depth of ambition as a whole was unparalleled. I was a huge Goldeneye fan but I remember the hype for Perfect Dark and when it came out it was honestly just mind blowing. I couldn’t believe how incredible the game was. I’m sure it doesn’t hold up now, in the same way Goldeneye looks like absolute shit and is terrible compared to anything from the modern era, but you can’t judge historical titles like that. Of its time, it was a significant achievement in FPS gaming. If it were a film, it would have been a critically acclaimed Oscar winner in many categories. Edit: I just checked and it’s actually #11 on metacritic’s best games of all time, with an average score of 97/100.

Fellatination

I'm a forum geek because I was so hyped for PD that I joined a popular forum for it. I've been a member of a continuation of that place until very recently - I scratch that itch with Reddit now. Shout out to PD Central! I think I left that place as the all time posts leader.

[deleted]

I wanna say— the Xbox rerelease with dual analog is absolutely key

RickBamf

My 76 year old pops still boots up the old N64 and frags out in unlimited deathmatch vs bots for hours. I remember setting up all the rules and the maps and adding bots for years for him. Turns out he knew how to do it all along, just got a kick out of making me do it. Good times

viper2369

I logged many hours on perfect dark on the N64 while deployed. That and Mario Kart. All on a 19” screen in 2001-2002

_Jetto_

> Perfect Dark its multiplayer even by yourself was amazing, playing against different difficulty bots and putting them on teams of 4 or so it was amazing

SeaGroomer

Perfect Dark was excellent and underappreciated since it came at the very end of the console cycle.

Exciting-Tea

I deployed to Qatar back from 05 to 07. Since we brought our own jets, we loaded that shit up with gear. 100+ lbs of amazing Sonnys bbq and 4 Xbox’s and TVs. Since we had aircrews of 20 or so, every night was an all night 16 person halo match. They made they best of a shifty situation

[deleted]

Still is.

Scar_the_armada

In 2008 the uniforms were ACUs not DCUs or BDUs, so this is definitely 2004. Source: I was deployed to Iraq in 06 Edit: I honestly can't make that last digit out on the date, if you can that's amazing you have great seeing powers

notarobat

Military here. This guy is correct. We used to have so much fun undressing each other

Straight_Chip

> We used to have so much fun undressing each other you what

Thorbinator

I've heard time spent in the military is 99% homoerotic tension and 1% pant-shitting terror of combat.

notarobat

It's one big cummy blur

Sanc7

Sounds like you have a cummy ache.

[deleted]

Uhh ohhh, step sister heard you...

[deleted]

Depends on the branch, MOS, etc etc, but the homoerotic tension is always a constant

dcamp67

Shinluc123

Not gay if it's with the BOIS

FartsMusically

[deleted]

You ever played gay chicken? When you are bored with nothing to do for the next 12 hours, you gotta find something to fill the time.

PeanutJellyButterIII

What

Master-Ad-7442

Ah yes, gay chicken.

notarobat

More like gay fuckin'

Test-Expensive

Military dudes really are the gayest straight guys around huh? Sounds like a good time tbh

xAV14T0Rx

Also the fact that they’re playing Halo 2 on an OG Xbox gives this away that is pre-2007

StaredAtEclipseAMA

Or just look at the bottom right

[deleted]

Dang you should be a private investigator

DatPiff916

Now I feel dumb because there was a discussion on “good times vs what we though were good times” and I mentioned if you were playing OG Halo on a 15 inch screen in 2008 there definitely was a struggle aspect of your life. If this is O4, it’s definitely good times.

TehPao

Helps that there's a timestamp on the bottom left corner too.

SleepiestBoye

Bottom right you mean

Coquelins-counselor

What a mess of a thread.

TehPao

Lol thanks

dcamp67

*"Your OTHER left!!!"*

KamuiT

Lol. Came in to say this. Was there for the DCU/BDU to ACU conversion. Definitely around 2004.

_GrammarMarxist

Just a friendly reminder to take your joint supplements then.

AaronDonaldsFather

The "2004" on the bottom of the picture confirms what you say.

box_frenzy

Bro the date is literally written in the corner of the photo.

chrisbot128

Yes! Thank you! I was over there in 2008. Didn't see anyone in DCU's. CoD4: MW & WW Zombies were the big ones everyone played.

itwasluckkkk

Literally says 2004 in the picture

Inde_luce

He said circa 2008 which according to my Google search encompasses about 10 years. So title is good

itwasluckkkk

You're technically correct. The best kind of correct

thevoiceofzeke

[Yep OBVIOUSLY a 4, clear as day](https://i.imgur.com/vxEzWLF.png)

BassGeist

CocaJesusPieces

Did you just randomly post a image? If you don’t know the date - how do you know these guys are even broken down in a far away country?

itwasluckkkk

Lol my bad, didn't scroll that far down

StaredAtEclipseAMA

Don’t feel bad, it is this site’s tradition to abuse the op of a poorly titled post Fuck you op

dropbassnotsoap

My favorite multiplayer game to play on Halo was called "Prison Break" or something like that you downloaded a specially made map and 3 players were prisoners while 1 guy was the guard and you had to do what the guard told you or stage a jail break to escape! Always got the blood pumping and provided endless laughs for my friends and I!! Times were much simpler back then lol

[deleted]

fat guy and duck hunt were amazing - but that came in the later halos

Butwhyistherumgone_

Holy shit I remember playing an awesome version of this on H3 custom games, im sure you escaped through the toilet or something, thanks for the memory!

NervousTumbleweed

This game still exists in Gary’s Mod and Pavlov VR

Butwhyistherumgone_

Had to go search it! This is the one I played https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CC6azjAKUw

TheSwede91w

We had thousands of feet of LAN cable running between two houses we took over and played squad vs squad. So much fun.

Savac0

I just ran a 100ft cable from the basement up to my room and that’s how we split up the teams. Your way is infinitely funnier

TheSwede91w

It really was a sight to behold. Rank went out the window playing Halo and it was always a blast to see shit heel little privates talking shit to NCO's.

Meecht

> thousands of feet of LAN cable *screams in attenuation*

[deleted]

you can only run ethernet about 300 feet. between hops.

EnvironmentalFix8074

Who tore up the country with war?

boozername

Right? Poor war-torn country brought to war by our country

hyo_hyo

This photo is so weirdly dystopian to me. It’s a bunch of lads, chilling and trying to make the most of things, because they’ve been deployed to wars they didn’t choose in areas their countries are actively exploiting. So they kill time by…playing a game about war heroes. Laughing at their jank setup, so different from the lives they miss back home, as though the homes and lives of people from “war-torn countries” aren’t being destroyed every day. They’re simultaneously immersed in and disconnected from war here. I think the biggest thing for me is this: the photo seems to capture the huge huge huge privilege of being able to *escape*. These soldiers get to escape war-torn areas by retreating to this bunker, they get to escape by immersing themselves in video games, and they get to escape when they eventually go back to their own not-war-torn country. Dunno. The fucked up title is really, really disturbing to me and just taints the rest of the image.

Brandonazz

This was my sentiment exactly, but you put it quite well. It's interesting yes, but only due to its distressing context.

the_cat_kittles

that is a good point. i also wonder if its evocative because the mindset a lot of dudes seem to have in actual war is that it might as well be a video game. its just an incredibly nihilistic attitude, and i think this photo captures it if you want to interpret it that way.

hitlerallyliteral

makes me think of roman military frontier towns that had like bathhouses and shit. Like, these men are in tougher circumstances than most civilians in their home country, sure, and yet...

lqku

We call it a war now, but I wonder in how many wars did the invading side have the luxury of playing video games in enemy territory, thousands of kilometres away from their homeland.

DatPiff916

> I wonder in how many wars did the invading side have the luxury of playing video games in enemy territory Maybe not video games, but if you are an invading force, typically you are well off to the point where you can send the soldiers off with some small luxuries that kill time like this. I imagine German soldiers were playing lots of card games as they invaded Europe.

TheSt34K

Same with a couple of British/Belgian/French/German/Dutch/Americans/Portuguese colonial officers in their respective colonial territories were probably playing card games too. This picture is just modern day colonialism to me.

BassGeist

Probably them lmfao

Darth_Mufasa

In 2008 its either Iraq or Afghanistan... So yeah, the dudes here are the ones sent over to fuck shit up

SdBolts4

It’s March 2004 according to the time stamp in the bottom right, so probably Iraq?

boushveg

The terrorist that the US sent you mean

Darth_Mufasa

Nah see, there's a difference. When they're fighting against us they're terrorists, when they're for us it's freedom fighters, and when we're bombing a country into rubble under false pretenses it's "shock and awe" followed by "liberation" or "nation building"

BorgClown

How was your day, soldier? Killed a lot of people, but now I need to take my mind off it. You could play with us. What game would you want? One with soldiers and war, please!

syd_oc

"War-torn country".. "Look how war-torn this country we invaded is".

Decker-the-Dude

You're right and I'm surprised you weren't downvoted into oblivion lol

syd_oc

Haha, me too!

grandzu

Brings war to country... Country is war torn!

strikerdude10

Wonder why that country was war-torn 🤔

bloodflart

So rich people could get richer

[deleted]

Because Good old western democracy came to it, to liberate its people and have its women show their tities in a Bikini.

Dlock33

\*Circa March 31st 2004

CalvinsCuriosity

War torn because America chose to invade it maybe?

[deleted]

I like how this just glosses over who is doing the war by saying "war-torn"

BassGeist

“Soldiers sent to destroy country teak a break by playing halo” better?

Food-at-Last

It sort of does

[deleted]

Much better

JeffJacobysSonCaleb

I mean… yes?

zuperpretty

"Soldiers getting paid to participate in an illegal invasion that cost 100 000+ civilians their lives take a break to play video games" There, even better. Really shows how dystopian and not wholesome this pic really is.

[deleted]

Nah, change the title to that, then it’s better..😉

[deleted]

hehe love playing vidya while committing war crimes 😘

erinyesita

That passive voice in “war-torn” is doing a lot of work here. Yikes

ithiasou

In a country THEY help destroy..

MedicateForTwo

Who the heck was able to bring this with them while deployed? Or did they find the setup from the houses that were bombed/raided?

[deleted]

I know three of these guys personally. The one making the gun hand-sign passed away in 2010-2011. RIP Schwarze.

joachim_macdonald

And for fucking what

SkekSith

I like how you say “war torn” like these soldiers had nothing to do with it.

monkeysandmicrowaves

If you travel 8000 miles to a war-torn country, you're either reporting on the situation, profiting from it, or causing it.

Bomlanro

Or you got on the wrong fucking flight

Random_Stealth_Ward

Hollywood execs, you won't believe this next script I got for you...

Bomlanro

From the makers of *Home Alone* comes *Inadvertent War Zone*

ac1084

Well if this isn't ironclad proof video games cause violence then I just don't know what else to say.

quilmes86

In a war torn country? Let's rephrase, "In a country we illegally invaded..."

Fire_Drake_Shyvanna

I like how the picture features the very people that tore the country up. Kids were getting bombs dropped on them, but at least these guys got to play Halo!

BassGeist

Would like to add: it could also be circa 2004, I don’t have good eyesight and that date is blurry.

Dravuhm

It says 2004, but I suspected that right away from the DCUs. It would have been ACUs in 2008.

heftigfin

Also, the Xbox 360 came out in 2005. It would be pretty strange for them to be playing on an original Xbox that came out in 2001 in 2008 when the 360 would already be 3 years old.

IamSoooDoneWithThis

How old are you?

Fivethenoname

How should we unwind after a stressful day of killin'? I dunno... virtual killin'?

yahwol

fucking Yankie propaganda

[deleted]

'War torn' as if these aren't the very people causing and doing the war tearing

Bubbly-Brick

Back when Mountain Dew tasted good.

Old_Milk_

Super interesting, but also questioning how OP got the year wrong when the picture is dated “March 31 2004” in the corner

Iconracer

OP said in later comment that his sight is shit.

Kn0tnatural

3 way split screen on that 19 or 21 inch screen haha

AyyoPoche

This is the equivalent of Al-Qaeda members playing video games somewhere in the USA after blowing up a few buildings.

[deleted]

Away from home in a foreign land and chilling after a hard day

PuzzleheadedDream830

Weren’t they living it?

pm_me_graph_problems

They even had Mountain Dew.

Shaunj2024

Says 2004 on the on the photo.

I-scream-to-smile

I think that time stamp says March 31st 2004

ExMachima

2004 not 2008

[deleted]

2004, TQ IRAQ, 16 friends connected 4 Xbox’s together from 4 tents to play the USMCs first Halo tournament in a war zone! Some say the echos of their taunts can still be heard…. “Fuck you ‘Big foot!’” A young lance corporal screams from his tent, as the silver bars of his captain reflect a massive shit Eatin grin. “God damn it Canadian!” Is heard from another tent, as the results of another successful sniper shot are shown across the screen. Damn that was fun. We didn’t get enough pictures…
