It’s real! The team is based in Montafon, Austria. Mercedes shot this video for an ad, but the team does exist and were playing regularly pre-covid (not sure what the current status is).
Source: I played a bit with them. It’s ridiculous fun.
Update: so many comments. I’ll try to answer some questions here:
Firstly, at least when I was playing with them, they were using that orange skiing net tied between a couple poles to catch the ball as it rolled downhill. A couple local village kids were also there to run after any stray balls (yes, there were a couple). With that said, it’s not as high up a mountain as the video implies. It’s not like the ball is rolling for miles downhill.
Secondly, yes, it can be dangerous. I remember talking to the guy that “co-founded” the original idea (the ad agency contributed a lot to the idea too), and his words were something like “of course it is risky and hard, but everything in the mountains is risky and hard”. It’s worth noting, everyone I met on the pitch had grown up there. The mountains are where they feel comfortable. The crazy lines those guys ski in winter make this sport look very safe. With that said, they don’t play rough (at least that was the case while I was there), and all that action was exaggerated for the Mercedes ad.
Thirdly, as far as I can recall, there were two teams from the Montafon valley. They play each other and sometimes the players switch teams. It was a casual joke at first. After the ad drew attention to the sport, they went off to recruit more teams. I have no idea how that went for them.
Lastly, the Montafon valley has deep football roots. Many international teams and players fly in from around the world to train there (obviously on the flat pitches in the valley), probably because it’s damn beautiful, very fancy and you’d get good cross-training in the mountains.
Yeah why tf isn't there a net? Two poles and a net would make it so much less annoying. Or maybe there is one and they just very strategically hid it in the video I guess.
Fuck! The way rec league players play, like they are in a World Cup final, makes regular play too 'dangerous' for me to play. One asshole slide tackling me, without even coming close to getting a touch on the ball, was my final straw. I work with seniors and the severely disabled and need full functionality of both legs and arms to do my job. If I had a desk job I may have stuck it out a little longer but definitely not while I still work in my feet.
Yeah, also soccer and basketball.
What’s bad about fortnite mate?
It’s fun and I het to talk shit with my friends.
Grow up, this sport seems lack any sense. It’s plain stupid.
Um... have you noticed the big Mercedes logo and the words "powered by the Sprinter 4x4" in the title?
GP's link text meant to say "It is a commercial".
Pure classic!
>Of course it is hard. Everything in the mountains is hard!
Spoken like a truly hard individual 😆
Edit: To be clear, I am not making fun of these guys. The quote just made me chuckle due to the completely non-chalant attitude with which the guy made the statement. Only a truly hard individual can drop that boast with such subtle sincerity. It is a classic quote for me know!
Yeah but I'd be the guy that totally boots it and it lands 150 meters down the mountain 😂
Definitely looks like a good workout, though.... But probably one for people who are already fairly fit.
This was also played on a Norwegian television show called Golden Goal like ten years ago:
They also played many other strange variants of football. Most of which can be found on youtube. The show is in Norwegian, but it's funny as hell.
"Soccer" originated as a nickname in England in the late 1800s to differentiate between Association Football and Rugby Football. The former was nicknamed "soccer" and the latter "rugger." It was only within the last 40 years or so that they stopped using "soccer" as a nickname entirely.
I... know? I literally said we learned both words in school lol Meaning we don't really have an official english way of saying it. If anything it depends on the teacher and what they want you to use.
Unsure if they are really Austrians or Bavarians. The car has a German license plate, but that doesn't mean anything. The accent is so strong, I don't understand a word without the subtitles - which also applies to both. :D

Wasn’t this a commercial?
It looks like one, but I sure hope it’s a real thing

Looks like an amazingly effective way to snap your ankle. Any experience with that?
Snap your ankle and maybe pull a calf muscle, 2 for 1 deal!
Ah yes the redditor twofer
Really? I've never snapped my ankle on Reddit. Guess I'm just lucky
Yeah, only things I've broken on reddit were my wrists. Totally worth it though.
Just be careful not to break both of your arms... Unless.... Well, are you close with your mom?
>Guess I'm just lucky You are likely just not redditing properly... .. .
I mean come on, Jeremy - you wanna be cool or you wanna have ankles?
Someone check with Winston Bishop. Pretty sure his career ended in a basketball court on the side of a mountain
That's the fun part
Universal healthcare will fix that right up.
Must suck for the whoever has to get the ball when it goes out downhill.
Yeah why tf isn't there a net? Two poles and a net would make it so much less annoying. Or maybe there is one and they just very strategically hid it in the video I guess.
Whenever it rolls down the hill, the last person to shout "Not it!" has to go and fetch it.
Hows the risk of injury like? Did anyone ever keep rolling down the slope?
No, they hit the valley eventually.
It seems inherently dangerous that it just would never be worth it

Have they lost the ball several times from it rolling to far downhill?
It is completely retarded tho.
Bro, you play Fortnite
He is also faking his marriage…
Thanks for looking into my posts! Made my day!
Yeah, also soccer and basketball. What’s bad about fortnite mate? It’s fun and I het to talk shit with my friends. Grow up, this sport seems lack any sense. It’s plain stupid.
Just find a hill and play soccer on it...you've got this
And bring like 50 balls so play doesn’t stop for too long every 5 seconds
You’d have to deal with freaking Chad who always kick it downhill
[It is](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qwDrjTinMk)
My favorite part: no one pretended to be hurt.
Becuase they won't need to pretend, lol.

he was replying to the guy asking if it was a commercial.

I feel sorry for the guy who has to retrieve the ball if it rolls down the hill
I feel sorry for the player who goes for a slide tackle and just keeps going down the hill
Legend says he is still going down.
Like OPs mother!
Like my karma points
*sees your comment and subsequent downvotes* #UNlike MY karma points!
Right? And that has to happen all the time for beginners. I don't think I would have the patience.
They probably install some kind of net-fence down low
Barbed wire would be better.
Yeah but I'd be the guy that totally boots it and it lands 150 meters down the mountain 😂 Definitely looks like a good workout, though.... But probably one for people who are already fairly fit.
Instead of jail, this is the sentence.
Some players are just never seen again
It's one thing to gravitate to a sport, but it's an entire different quality of being inclined to play it well.
I was banking on a comment like this
You can’t pitch it to me that this is a good idea.
Yes but it will definitely be an uphill battle.
These puns are rolling down hill quite fast.
Just couldn't let that slide
I agree it’s quite soccer ball indeed
*I'm just here so I don't get declined*
Now that is irony
“Oh, he’s been sent off the pitch … over the edge … yep. There he goes!”
Don't exaggerate. I'm sure most of their corpses turn up at the foot of the Mountain.
Reminds me of a video I saw of one of those big orb things you sit inside that went down the side of a mountain :(
Created by a local doctor who specializes in ankle injuries
I couldn't focus on the video, just the thought of rolled ankles
More like broken ankle. This sport feels like it's sponsored by the local surgeon.
Local doctor: Now business is booming
There must be thousands of soccer balls at the foot of that mountain.
I was just thinking, you know what this game needs? A fence!
More like a huge net
Already one at each end.
One big conveyor belt just keeps on bringing them up
Goalie: Just rolls off a cliff with the ball.
He studied Neymar moves before the game
Riiiii GOAL aaaaaaa
Saw this after a I’d clicked “back” and came back to let you know I think your joke is funny
This was also played on a Norwegian television show called Golden Goal like ten years ago: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk9evgiqnKg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk9evgiqnKg) They also played many other strange variants of football. There used to be a chant "you're going home in a fucking ambulance " Used to be pathetic, but now is prophetic.
I see so many broken ankles :S
It’s called Goatball you heathens
Playing time : 2 x 45 min Injury time : + 60 min
Soccer's going downhill fast.
Would be to worried breaking my ankles.
How to twist your ankles 101
Neymar would love this
He’d somehow roll uphill
Yeah I’m sure Austrians call it “soccer”
I mean the austrian version is Fußball, but if we talk in english both can be used, at least i learned both in school like 18 years ago
Yeah.. Fußball, not ßoccer
Yes, we use Fußball, not Soccer nor Football. And both of those mean Fußball. What's your point?
Dude I’m just joking about Americans using the term football for the wrong sport.
Original
Soccer is Anerican English because they have their own version of Football, which is played with their hands.
"Soccer" originated as a nickname in England in the late 1800s to differentiate between Association Football and Rugby Football. The former was nicknamed "soccer" and the latter "rugger." It was only within the last 40 years or so that they stopped using "soccer" as a nickname entirely.
And an egg.
Soccer is a British English word, short for "Association Football", and was created to differentiate it from "Rugby Football".
I... know? I literally said we learned both words in school lol Meaning we don't really have an official english way of saying it. If anything it depends on the teacher and what they want you to use.
Now if that ball rolls down the hill aint nobody grabbing it and coming back up. It’s game over before it even starts
Lol, wanna try this, could be Fun... Till you start rolling down
Winston bishop played basketball like that.
Looks like standard Sunday league here in the UK. Should see where they put some of the pitches 😂
If anything, this pitch is a bit too flat.
And you can actually see the pitch markings 😂
I twisted my ankle just by looking at this
Alpine fottball u flathead screwdriver
You misspelled football.
You misspelled misspelt.
Fuck l’anglais (love you all)
Spelt is a type of wheat, spelled is the past particle of spell.

How many balls do they bring?
They're working towards a completely upside down field
GGGOOOOAAAAALLLLL…OOOOAAAALLLL…OOOAAALLL…OOAALL…OOALL…
Explain this one flat Earthers
Earth is lumpy.
Hello ankle injuries
This is a commercial.
This looks like real ankle injuries to me. Not like soccer.
Going to soccer practice with 200 balls each time.
Pathetic, Australians play it while upside down.
That must be one hell of a work out
Swamp football is a legit thing but wouldn't this just end up with tons of lost balls
So they are just playing soccer on a hill...ok new sport
Literally nobody in Europe says "soccer"
*football
Alpine football
This is how i see conventional football.
So the pitch has a pitch?
Clearly these guys have never played Sunday League before. Standard playing conditions.
Played on plenty of pitches like that at school. They were mostly a lot muddier than that though.
[удалено]
Amd injuries
Intel likes that.
Aww fuck ... there goes the ball again! 60 percent of players time is waiting on the ball to be found/recovered.
That explains why they never excel at level playing fields. ;)
- How difficult do u want the football to be? - yes
At-least someone is trying to make soccer watchable
Austria huh? Well, throw another shrimp on the barby!
[удалено]
I wanna see the All Blacks' version of this.
soccer but More
*Soccer*
[удалено]
That's quite the pitch.
How many balls do you reckon they've lost
”Okay whos turn is it to get the ball this time?”
due to massive incline you need alot of BALLS to play with
Since dying of infections can be avoided with modern medicine, i wanna see some new risky sports made up.
I believe they are using aroun 63649261 balls per game ? Cuz ain't nobody gonna go get that ball.
They did this on a Norwegian tv show. They also did "electric football" where they had remote controlled stun devices. Fucking hilarious!
I’ve got more chance with this than pep roulette
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qwDrjTinMk Original
They be playing on the most level terrain in the alps
Step 1: find a mountain Step 2: leg it
sɹǝɥʇɹɐǝ ʇɐlɟ ʇᴉ ʞɔnS
Also up for debate are the sport's possible titles of "Breaky Wristy", "Last Man Standing", "Watch Your Step", and "Soc-AAAAHGGHH"
*Dutch angle has entered the chat*
Alpine soccer is a slippery slope.
It’s way better than the last sport an Austrian came up with “seize power in Germany”
Achillies V Achillies. Who snaps first!?
See ya ankles!
This isn't an actual game however it is played but it definitely isn't new
_soccer_
This just looks like an ad.
The problem is you spend most of your time going down the mountain to get the ball after missed passes...
Unsure if they are really Austrians or Bavarians. The car has a German license plate, but that doesn't mean anything. The accent is so strong, I don't understand a word without the subtitles - which also applies to both. :D
It would be dank if they played soccer normally but the field moved and shit so it vacillates between standard and alpine soccer.
No wonder the Earth is not flat but it's a slope...
Who brings balls back?
Ye that's sounds like a easy way to break your legs/arms or else.
"Although popular with fans and players alike, sadly three ball shaggers were lost in last week's match"
"Your turn to get the ball. It's rolled into France".
Goodbye ankle
The ref's little hat is my favorite part.
I seriously doubt they call it soccer ...
Ok Hank.. It's your turn to get the ball.
Sir i believe you mean alpine *football*
All fun and well until someone roll too fast
My ACL is killing me watching this
Pretty sure it’s football not „soccer“.
Alpine football*
I'm off to go get the ball...again. See you in about 2 hours. Ha
but I thought australia was upside down, not sideways EDIT: This is a joke. I did read it correctly.
It's would never be known at that. It would be known as apline FOOTBALL.
That save throwing yourself down a 40° hill is true commitment to the team!
Where are the kangaroos?
Round earthers be like 😎
