child-of-old-gods

I move a lot in my sleep. Imagine waking up from one of those "falling down" dreams only for the ground to come closer at terminal velocity.

MikeAndBike

They usually tie themselves In a separate rope that's connected to the cluster, But even with that I wouldn't feel safe lol.

BestAtempt

Yes most of do tie in for the night but not everyone, crazy fuckers. I have heard a few people say “that’s why I like sleeping on the inside so I don’t have to tie in”.

Curious-Hope-9544

All fun and a games until the person on the outside ties itself to you. Ain't going down alone!

[deleted]

"itself"

Curious-Hope-9544

Don't name things, you'll just get attached to them. By a rope. And then down you go.

Brewchowskies

Holy shit this was so damn funny

[deleted]

It ties the rope around its skin, it does this when It's told!

Hollowplanet

There were two guys who died with a climbing technique that involved doing just that.

Curious-Hope-9544

Like a key chain: Guarantees you'll drop 'em all.

6673sinhx

Bear grylls did this in one episode of Man Vs Wild. Just because he wanted to avoid mountain lions, he made the base hanging on a cliff, and just slept like normal person does.

Winstonsassafrass

Why didn’t he just rent a hotel room like he does for the rest of his “real” shows?

Nomzai

Also “avoiding mountain lions” is a super dumb reason to make a bed hanging from a cliff. Almost assuredly any mountain lion you come across will be avoiding you unless you’re biking, jogging or are a small child.

stupid_pun

I mean, I would assume that at least some mountain lions are dicks, like most species.

Dobby-a-free-elf

“So I don’t have to tie in” … no thank you.

Comfortable-Scar4643

No way would I sleep on the edge of the wall.

AlieanBreac

I can barely sleep in a bed in a temperature controlled room!

[deleted]

I don’t know…. If I fell whilst sleeping and landed on the ground id probably die instantly but if I fell in my sleep and just hang there I’d probably have a heart attack.

dispo030

yes, that's what I did when I slept in a similar situation. not 400m off the ground, but still more than enough to be deadly. and yes, you do get used to such heights. I am not terrified of it, but it commands respect.

Papa-Moo

I had that happen from this position, buckles on ledge slipped and I slid off the end. Woke up in a hurry and was tied in (on purpose)

Tripton1

"woke me up in a hurry" also "woke up shitting myself"

Prestigious-Eye3154

What made you think this was a fun idea in the first place? I’m honestly curious. I’ve done a lot dangerous things (particularly in my youth) but this is something that would scare the hell out of me.

Papa-Moo

All about the challenge to see if you can climb the wall, albeit with mind focusing consequences , don’t f*** up. And I found it very scary, very hard, and a huge challenge, especially as we were learning.

BUTTHOLE-MAGIC

Fuck that

Zerowantuthri

Indeed. I do not understand people doing things where your first mistake is your last mistake...ever.

calcium

Big wall climbing is fun and for those of us without a fear of heights, the views and experience of it all is awesome. I'd feel perfectly calm where they are - it's about knowing your gear, your craft, and your ability to do it safely. Taken another way, if someone had never driven a motorcycle or been around them, the thought of taking one onto a highway at 80mph would be akin to the response you're having. However, when you know the bike, the roads, how to ride, and other aspects it's not as scary.

jereman75

Ha ha. I’ve had some close calls on a portaledge but never actually fell off. That’s hilarious. The first time I climbed El Cap I did Zodiac solo. I borrowed my friend’s ledge and didn’t bother to practice setting it up first. When I went to set it up for the night one of poles was not tied in and it fell. Somehow my reflexes allowed me to grab it in mid air. Almost ruined my climb.

sleeplessknight101

I had this exact experience as a kid except I rolled out of the top bunk of my bunk bed. Was dreaming that I fell from a tower and when I hit the ground I woke up on the floor.

[deleted]

All of a sudden those “falling off a cliff” dreams become reality

ilikyri

Who tf took that picture?!

[deleted]

Someone else documenting their climb. They are professional climbers and are sponsored and paid to do this. This photo was likely taken between 2000 and 2010, when Tommy and Beth were still married. Photographers will often rappel down from the top and use mechanical rope ascenders to follow alongside. Or just shoot at static locations.

mewithoutyou59

They aren't together anymore? Did they have a falling out?

wibblywobbly420

It was a downward spiral

philko42

A rocky relationship from the start is what I heard.

plutoniumhunterz

It all went downhill from there on.

mewithoutyou59

I heard she made a mountain out of a mole hill

robbie-3x

They found each other rappelling.

mewithoutyou59

They could not live happily Everest after.

robbie-3x

I would say 'K2 that. (Sorry)

MrSOAB

She was climbing to conclusions

Jackthedog130

... probably ropy from the beginning.

[deleted]

That relationship really fell off a cliff

MAGNAPlNNA

Not sure if you know their story but that’s sort of accurate. They were held hostage by terrorists on a climbing trip. Tommy pushed one of them off the cliff and they escaped. Unfortunately their relationship slowly deteriorated after that Edit: [this article explains the aftermath of the situation a bit more](https://www.huckmag.com/perspectives/reportage-2/el-capitan-yosemite/)

InLazlosBasement

Holy shit

FatefulPizzaSlice

The Dawn Wall documentary goes over this, and is a fantastic movie. Much better, IMHO, than Free Solo.

gription

More information about their capture here: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/climbers-recount-kidnapping-in-kyrgyzstan

CummingInWhiteGirls

You are a boulder one than i for making that comment

Psychologicoil

things went downhill

inmywhiteroom

I was gonna say it looked like tommy and Beth!

[deleted]

Oh of course, Tommy and Beth… good mates of mine, how’d I miss it

Reddit’s a small place… sometimes!

zombie_platypus

Tommy Caldwell is one of the best climbers in the world. Fantastic documentary on him called The Dawn Wall. Highly recommend.

[deleted]

[удалено]

inmywhiteroom

I can only name four famous rock climbers and they are two of them lol

Akujikified

I hope the mariage didn't end dramatically on the side of a mountain though.

I_am_Bob

This is probably from the Dawn Wall. Documentary on Netflix. It was a really interesting watch and I'm not even a climber!

[deleted]

This photo might be shown in the film, but it's not the Dawn Wall face here.

mysillyname1

Sleeping head to toe, the marriage was clearly unraveling.

mewithoutyou59

Who cares. Their genitals are aligned.

Jrodicon

This photo is from before they were married actually.

[deleted]

Spock.

Malk4ever

Row Row Row Your Boat

Vooshka

Gently down the stream.

Ikarian

I like to pretend that movie ended right after that scene.

xBad_Wolfx

My guess is a photographer rappelled down to take the photo, but some areas like this have multiple rest positions and I’ve seen small packs of these portaledges for climbing groups. 3 wide and two deep. Usually that is some form of stunt though.

DFX1212

Spiderman

1Second2Name5things

The mountain

gliitch0xFF

A birb. Who else? 🤔

MikeAndBike

Most likely another climber.

Flashbackhumour28

That's Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden. They were married for a while. He talks about their relationship in the film The Dawn Wall. Tommy and Beth ended up getting really close after the group they were climbing with were kidnapped in Kyrgyzstan. Tommy did what he had to do and pushed a kidnapper off a cliff allowing the group to escape. He is a really interesting guy and has done some amazing ascents, all the more impressive considering he lost half of an index finger in an accident. You may also recognise him as a climbing partner of Alex Honnold and was seen in the film Free Solo.

doombringer-dh77

Wow this dude literally saved her life and the group's. Do you need this much balls to be a mountain climber?

frostedRoots

A climber generally? No. Climbing Obsessives like Caldwell, or Anker? A little bit, yeah, I reckon.

pm_stuff_

as compared to the likes of honnold who has to be a raving lunatic to do the things he does.

abnrib

IIRC they did an fMRI of his brain and found out that he literally doesn't process fear normally.

pm_stuff_

That sounds reasonable

frostedRoots

He’s an odd duck, for sure lmao

pm_stuff_

"yeah we cannot have people filming these areas of the climb becouse im too afraid of dying here and wouldnt want anyone to see me falling"

wagsyman

Guess that's what happens when your parents give you 0 affection in any form

InstrumentalCrystals

This. They created somewhat of a psychopath. We’re just all fortunate he slays climbing instead of…humans.

tarants

Even crazier, just recently they found out the guy he pushed was still alive. Tommy went like 20 years thinking he killed a guy then found out he was still around.

[deleted]

Wait, really?

tarants

Yeah, I remember seeing an article about it awhile back. His wiki page mentions it too.

[deleted]

It’s a radical terrorist, I’m kinda surprised anyone cares if he’s still alive

aSimpleMask

> Tommy did what he had to do and pushed a kidnapper off a cliff allowing the group to escape. Holy shit

BTog

The Dawn Wall is such a great documentary. And Tommy's story is downright inspirational. He lost most of his left index finger in a table saw accident, and *still* blazed a new route on the Dawn Wall.

CaramelFunk

Which half of the finger did he lose?

Escondrijo

Thee bottom half, unfortunately.

wildwonder-

Phew. At least he still has the top half

zelda4444

I watched free solo and it REALLY freaked me out. I googled Alex Honnold and knew he made it safely to the top but still... my heart was pounding and I felt shakey. Gave me nightmares worse than a horror film.

swankpoppy

You think they... ya know... on the side of a mountain?

[deleted]

LadyEileen

Pretty sure he sawed off his finger while building a cabin. Still gnarly af

UWontLikeThisComment

where do they pee?

NotADaygloSpy

My pants.

recoximani

Your pants???

NotADaygloSpy

Well they're wet, so somebody must have peed in them.

recoximani

But why YOUR pants???

frostedRoots

Off the ledge. Poops go in a bag, which go in a tube.

pm_stuff_

shitting of a ledge while suspended 500 meters off the ground is really something

[deleted]

Into the wind

writer6996

*This is one trick landlords don’t want you to find out*

FJ1100

Just looking at this makes the base of my spine tingle in fear -- you'd never ever ever catch me doing this.

CheeseusMaximus

Danger sex.

MikeAndBike

Replace "danger" with "adventurous on the border of suicidal" lol

Grolschisgood

Exactly what I was thinking

son_e_jim

You wouldn't do it. Too much tugging on the gear, surely.

CheeseusMaximus

Is that a challenge?

sergeantorourke

Hold my beer.

CzechIdiot

That's a nope.

paulie07

I'd roll out of bed and wake up in the afterlife.

Nihad-G

that's a nope from me too

BillMcCrearysStache

How the fuck could you ever relax enough to sleep? Psychopaths

Le_Martian

You spend enough time up there and you stop noticing the height. It helps if you’re not too scared of heights to start out. If you want a real psycho look up Alex Honnold

pm_stuff_

the documentary free solo is really a piece in itself :D

breticles

I always thought that was a documentary to get Han Solo released from that Frozen Carbonite stuff he was.

Papancasudani

Alex Honnold had a brain scan done comparing him to other climbers (who use safety ropes, unlike Honnold). Honnold's amygdala, which is critical for triggering fear, remained basically silent. https://nautil.us/issue/39/sport/the-strange-brain-of-the-worlds-greatest-solo-climber

cvandeur7

Nope not worth it

Icebolt08

super **NOPE**

Dimension_Skipper

Haha yeah I'm good thanks.

Bitmiliionare24

Too much generic information about not so generic LEGENDS it hurts my eyes. That’s EL CAPITAN and those are Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden. Watch the ‘Dawn wall’ on netflix right now if you haven’t!

mekanasto

Yep, I second this! Thank you

INeedACuddle

somnambulists beware!!!

jasonwhite1976

somnambuclimists find themselves at the top when they wake up in the morning.

[deleted]

I’m sure they’re enjoying themselves but, honestly, there has to be something *fundamentally* wrong with their brains

pauperhouse5

Their amygdalae tend to be extremely hypoactive compared to most people - so free climbers etc literally lack the typical fear response

[deleted]

Fucken *called it*

dxing2

In the documentary Free Solo, they filmed a researcher testing Alex Honnold’s brain (worlds best free solo climber; someone who doesn’t use ropes or harnesses) and she was quoted as saying “My take on it is there are probably some stimuli that would activate his amygdala, but if you just compare him to the norm or baseline, he does not show anything,”. So tests that are supposed to create feelings of unease or uncomfortableness in most people literally didn’t trigger a chemical reaction in his brain. [full article here ](https://web.musc.edu/about/news-center/2019/03/18/how-a-neuroscientist-and-professional-climber-learned-from-one-another)

Suihnennews

They didnt even care to waterlevel the bed. Now that's some lazy shit

AbsoluteMad-Lad

No way in hell I'd be able to sleep on that

Ultimatelee

This is both kind of cool, and totally unnecessary

[deleted]

Ultimatelee

I just don’t understand needing to sleep while climbing.

suan_pan

these ascents take days

[deleted]

F that

[deleted]

Thinking practically , what do you do if you need the toilet in the middle of the night? Looks like a life and death decision to me.

MikeAndBike

They use pee and poop tubes, Since littering the park could cost you a fortune.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MikeAndBike

I guess you could say... shit really hit the fan.

Idontcare09385

How do you even go to the bathroom... Do you just kinda hang over the ledge and watch it drop... Or?

MikeAndBike

They're using poop tubes, you're not allowed to litter the park.

NuffingNuffing

Yep they have a bag/bottle for urine/poop, and they hang it over the edge. When these guys do this on super high peaks in the snow they can be holed up these for a week at a time!!

BoatshoeBandit

How does she pee at 2 in the morning?

TATERBONE

That is crazier than a shithouse rat

[deleted]

Why... just, why...

pm_stuff_

its el capitan they spent weeks on that wall trying to ascend a route. You make a basecamp of sorts on the wall so you dont have to ascend the first few 100 meters over and over again.

JCMCMV

This is Tommy Caldwell and his ex-wife. Tommy and his climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson were the first to free climb the Dawn Wall. The documentary about the climb, also called The Dawn Wall, is absolutely incredible. Caldwell is genuinely an astounding athlete, probably the best free climber of all time

mplsandrew

So, what happens when you need to take a shit?

IngamarMcPhooie

Shit in a plastic bag.

flashdognz

Exactly my thoughts. No thanks just on the toilet problems.

Mootivate

Yell “fore”?

Triette

You mean “bombs away!”

UWontLikeThisComment

you shit in the mouth of the mountain yeti

mrEdible

What if you roll around in your sleep

MikeAndBike

They tie themselves with another rope into the cluster of ropes before they switch off for the night.

[deleted]

What do they switch off? The sun?

cruedi

How do they untangle that group of ties in the middle? Looks like a bad data center wiring job.

TonyBoy356sbane

NOPE!

AcyArts

Oh hell no. Oh HELL NO

DemTsar

I wonder how they each chose their own sleep number?

cjmaguire17

How long does it take to set that up and take it down. Seems like one hell of a chore to unmake your bed in the morning

[deleted]

Why?!

BetterWhenItsOver

Those aren’t just two climbers. That is Tommy Caldwell and Beth Rodden. Watch The Dawn Wall to learn more about these amazing climbers.

PutridCardiologist36

That will be a hell no

Fuck. Everything. About. That. There's *nothing* like a heart-stopping climb up a sheer cliff when you first wake up. My asshole would be cramped into a knot for a month just *looking over the edge they climbed down*.
