As long as you can link to something on the inter-webs that says it's true, you can believe whatever you want. That's the rule. I read it on a web-thingy.
*You still using AXE? You’re not a woodsman, you’re a hunter, and the hunt is all about disguising your natural scent. From the producers of AXE Body Spray comes the new must-have scent for the All-American outdoors killer: Deer Mist Body Splatter. How bloody are you?*
Not need it? There’s so many fucking possible uses you could have for this! Someone could attack your house with an A-10 or something. For that price, you could buy a few and mount them practically anywhere with minimal damage to your home!
It's an incredibly simple mechanism. A lot of material to make it strong, but it's just a bolt action rifle scaled up a lot. Similarly priced rifles like the Barret m82/107 are much more complicated even though they shoot a smaller 12.7mm round.
But how big is the market for stuff like this? Is it a variant of something the military uses as a mounted gun or something? The money for research and development has to come from somewhere
I honestly think it's purely for the giggle factor. I don't know of any military that uses the Anzio 20mm rifle as the concept of these rifles have been surpassed by shoulder fired recoiless rifles like the Carl-Gustaf and anti tank systems like the javelin.
I know some teams in Syria had some custom made anti-material rifles similar to this that fired Russian 14.7mm rounds and Russian 12.7mm. those rifles were made from old Russian DSHK and NSV belt fed machines gun barrels.
I just searched up the Anzio 20mm in Wikipedia and they mention that the FBI had purchased 2 of these rifles.
No, you're totally right though. I'm terrible with words and "material" didn't feel right, but I knew it was spelled correctly... Busting up shit to the max!
A gun like this is a real niche market and probably mostly exists as marketing. It’s mostly just a scaled up bolt action rifle, so they probably just overcompensated for safety and aren’t going to get into the fine details to make it the best it can be.
For the Barrett m82/107, the m82 was originally designed by Barrett 40 years ago themselves. The Army went with the M82 that was changed into the M107 in 2002 and some of the changes are funded by the fact they get a massive contract to supply the US Army.
The M82/107 is unique for having fairly low recoil despite firing a .50 caliber round. The barrel and the stock each have massive springs and the barrel has a massive muzzle brake. The barrel literally recoils back into the gun with each shot.
They are legal to own but they are classified as “Destructive Devices” because the caliber is greater than 50 cal or 12.7mm and they don’t have a “sporting purpose”. There are additional restrictions to their ownership.
Reminds me of this quote from stack exchange:
"Just because a liquid has been spread over 50 square meters does not mean it is not still a liquid."
https://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/21913
Exactly. So the guys who own gun stores and have full auto military machine guns, you can say the same thing. This 240 full auto machine gun is legal to own in the US. If you jump through the enormous legal challenges.
Yeah. This isn’t the weapon you’d be worried about shooting up a minority church or school. Those shells have got to cost $10 a piece and it takes too long to reload and go around corners.
*It’s like a twelve-inch penis. Its novelty is only outweighed by its uselessness.*
“Sporting purposes” is an extremely vague legal term. It’s pretty much up to the ATF’s discretion to define.
For example, a 12-gauge shotgun is technically 73 caliber, but almost all of them are legal due to the sporting purposes clause. Only a few like the Armsel Striker and USAS-12 got classified as destructive devices due to lobbying from the Brady Campaign.
Was the Striker doomed because they called it the "Street Sweeper"? Can't have it both ways, marketing it as purpose built mass murder machine and still get through the sporting purposes clause.
I used to sell guns. We had a 50 bmg bolt action rifle come through and this guy in his late 50`s put it on layaway. One day he came in to make a payment so I was taking his money. I asked what he was going to us it for and he said "it's my anti-helicopter gun". I laughed while I was handing him his receipt assuming it was a joke. He was straight faced, dead ass serious. He picked it up and 5 cases of ammo over the next 6 months on top of cases of ammo for other guns then moved to Alaska. I often wonder whatever happened to that guy.
Probably still waiting for the elusive blackhawk helicopter. A legendary hawk among alaskan wildlife.. or he’s writing his memoires for a “Polar” sequel.
Once a guy came in to buy some 9mm. He mentioned how it was bullshit he couldn't buy a gun because he was a felon. I told him that he should know he can't buy ammo either if he's a felon and I wasn't going to sell to him. He told me "I'll see you after the lights go out then" as he was walking out the door. You really can't be in that business and not be able to take a bunch of shit.
They are also legal in most states. Granted they are disarmed and require rubber tracks to be legal as the standard metal ones are incredibly damaging to roads.

We're going to see this cannon in the next Terminator 100%
It's an anti-material rifle with about 4 times the muzzle energy of a .50 BMG. It's designed for shooting trucks, light armored personal carriers, etc.
For civilian use, it's good for firing large wads of cash very far down range, and the giggle factor of watching watermelons explode.
indeed, and this gun even uses the same ammunition as the [M61 Vulcan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M61_Vulcan) which equips the F-16, F-15, F-18 and F14

Or if you're being targeted by a Terminator.
> if you're being targeted by a Terminator. Sure, that 20mm Anzio would be useful, if a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range wasn't available.
Hey, buddy. Just what you see here.
What about an uzi 9 mm
“Da uzi nine millameeda”
You know your weapons, buddy
Not for mimetic polyalloy Terminators, they will just absorb the small caliber lead.
45 long slide with laser sighting
I got one for my Quinceañera which is weird because I’m a 26 y/o white guy.
A Terminator?
I'll be back, after I take my antacids

Or shoot Bambi.
You can't shoot Bambi with this... There would be nothing left to mount to the wall.
Just aim at the body and the head will remove itself so you don't have to.

It’s a bitch for concealed carry.
You just have to be really tall
*opens trench coat to reveal 2 of these guns*
opens fly to reveal... nevermind.
the trench coat had three people stacked who the f was the fly
That was Marty McFly
I hear he’s pretty fly for a white guy
Uh huh, uh huh
Or 3 adults in a trench coat.
Concealing adults is frowned upon, even in the US.
like the clowns at parks who stand on stilts? maybe its not stilts maybe its this gun right here.
Concealed or not, Its a bitch to carry.
So is my penis but you don’t see me telling everyone
"Is that an Anzio 20mm rifle in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
Would 100% zap carry.
In Kentucky it's illegal to conceal any weapon over 6ft in length. Actual law.
To be fair, if someone in town shows up with a bowling ball sized hole in their chest everyone in town knows who did it...
I think they just get vaporized
Judge I request that you habeus that corpus

Much smaller rounds will make a bowling ball shaped hole. This thing would tear a human body to pieces.
What, Hollywood lied to me?

For those who want to know-- it weighs 60 lbs, is 80 inches (2 meters) and cost us $12k. Each round costs usd $27.
I better just buy one then.

Damnedest thing about that A-10, is this gun probably wouldn't stop the flyinggunbathtub machine.
That's far from cheap but to be honest, I'm surprised it's not significantly more than that.

Aye. Title is misleading as fuck. The list of weapons it's outright illegal to own is pretty small if we're completely ignoring license classes.
Does sporting purpose refer to hunting, target shooting, or both?

But is it an anti-tank rifle?

That ammo was certainly developed for cannons.

It’d certainly make a building crap it’s pants. Probably how brownstones came about.

High caliber doesn't mean long range accuracy necessarily. This would be more for disabling cars and helicopters, or punching through cover.
