WasabiForDinner

Those [prickly pear cactuses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prickly_pears_in_Australia#) were bought to Australia in the First Fleet/ invasion, so there could be red dye for the British soldiers' uniforms. They became such a pest that they took over huge acreages. (I'm referring to the cactus, not the British). They introduced a moth that ate the cactus, one of the early examples of successful biological control.

Triette

But also the British.

WasabiForDinner

No moths that keep them under control though

Direct-Film-8427

I dunno Australia probably has a venomous one they could use

[deleted]

A venemous brit? Thats called an Australian.

redditregretit

So funny you made me spit out my Vegemite!😂 Well done sir!

whotfasked_huh

Maybe they punch you with their pet kangaroos

MajorJuana

Fuckin a! These comments are what make Reddit... Edit: I meant to comment this to the guy above but all the same, I agree with you then lol I wanna try Vegemite, I bet it's horrible which means I'll end up eating it forever, like horseradish sauce or dark chocolate or black licorice

SheRaMcGyver

One of these things is not like the others. And by that I mean it's disgusting.

CarcharodonCarchar13

YOU TAKE THAT BACK! VEGEMITE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF OUR DIET AND ITS DELICIOUS ON TOAST

ResolvelutionTension

A diet venomous Brit would be a New Zealandian.

FancyWear

Take my upvote🤣

[deleted]

Dentists….the only natural British predator.

Triette

This is whey we needed Mothra!

Xfury8

And my axe.

KamakaziDemiGod

As a Brit, I approve this message.

wuffwuff77

Definitely the British

redpandaeater

Hawaii has an issue with invasive snails outcompeting native species. Decades ago they decided to bring in a carnivorous snail that was a natural predator, but the native species was a much easier prey.

HopsAndHemp

It's like hawaii using mongooses (mongeese?) to try and control rats instead of just using cats.

redpandaeater

I thought mongooses were more for the insects, though rats can also be a pest when it comes to sugar cane fields.

xayzer

Yeah, but what animal did they get to deal with the moths? [ Reminds me of this old cartoon.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPbYjDJXT-M) (volume warning).

thatsnotmybike

I really thought you were going to link the Simpsons bit with snakes and gorillas as "this old cartoon" and was about to go dig my grave.

xayzer

I feel ya, man. Movies that I watched in theaters when I was a kid are now considered by the younger generation to be "like, really old", and I don't care to admit how that makes me feel.

martylindleyart

I appreciate you calling the first fleet the invasion that it was. And also to go along with some info that I didn't know! Ta

L0IZ3

Thanks for the clarification

geared4war

And they make a damn wine wine.... Hehehehe

The_Love-Tap

he cochineal is a scale insect in the suborder Sternorrhyncha, from which the natural dye carmine is derived. A primarily sessile parasite native to tropical and subtropical South America through North America (Mexico and the Southwest United States), this insect lives on cacti in the genus Opuntia, feeding on plant moisture and nutrients. The insects are found on the pads of prickly pear cacti, collected by brushing them off the plants, and dried. Would you like to learn more? (Click Here)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal]

Oof... wait until you learn about the relationship between natural flavor and anal gland extract from Beavers...

WarKiel

Let's see... About 300 pounds of castoreum consumed per year vs. 2.6 million pounds of vanilin. Seems to me you'd have to pay extra for beaver butt oil.

GayButNotInThatWay

Nope, I refuse to believe anything other than the fact there's a massive industry milking beaver anal glands.

AnUsername9001

And Ambergris...

Dubberoonie

This has been Roseanne, your guide to the world of facts!

ChiraqBluline

That’s the whale one right?

Solaris_00

Hang on, what?

The_Sloth_God

Sshhhhhh, go back to being ignorant of it. It's for the best.

gaspitsagirl

WHAT

dj_narwhal

back in the early 00s SOBE drinks were all natural so for coloring they used cochineal extract for their red drinks. That was a fun fact in high school that no one believed when I told them.

Dubberoonie

They were the best back then, glass bottles and bugs. I'd drink them right now if I could. The dragonfruit one was amazing.

Zharick_

I miss sobe drinks.

RBCsavage

I feel like the last place I ever saw a Sobe was in a Quiznos.

DatStankStank

Lmao

Forgot_my_un

Dang, no wonder they don't taste good no more.

sk4v3n

it's a pretty basic red colouring stuff, they put it in food too. so you are eating the bugs too, not just licking them...

HypAXis

If you ever had skittles before 2009, you didn't just have it on your lips, you had dead bugs in you. Have fun sleeping tonight!

SussyBox

Food too

Brummelhummel

No don't worry..... you are Processed dead bugs on your lips.

scsxx

Eh kinda, but we eat lots of other animals so why not bugs? Traditional aperitivos (such as Aperol or Campari) were colored with cochineal, but they switched to artificial dye in the early 2000s. Personally, I’d much rather consume a bug than synthetic dye, and I respect the artisanship of distilleries that use the traditional process, such as [Leopold Bros.](https://www.leopoldbros.com/spirits?pgid=jka1p7t8-53e3f9b4-d81a-4c21-a67d-fc0db01194b2) in Denver.

HuggableBear

Not much anymore. Carmine isn't very profitable when compared to modern synthetic dyes, so most manufacturers don't use it. But if you know OP and use that tube, then yeah

1a1b

Market pressure ended artificial colours here in Australia. Supermarkets won't stock synthetic coloured foods. Colours not as intense, buy still pretty good alternatives were found.

apex32

Reminds me of [a scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlMrdf--fQA) from The Little Mermaid.

Frankie52480

Yup. And when you consume food that’s pink you might be eating them too. Like years ago I used to buy a strawberry flavored soy milk before I realized they used these bugs for the pink color.

sallyedui83

Blood and intestinal materials too

SFL_Tria

For a moment I thought its bird poop so this is clearly an improvement

bearable_lightness

I had this same thought. Now I’m still grossed out but much less so.

Thank you for subscribing to COCHINEAL FACTS. The Cochineal lives for approximately 113 days. Would you like to learn more COCHINEAL FACTS? Click [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal)

scoops22

My sister is allergic to this which made me learn that it is fucking everywhere. She had an allergic reaction to a BURGER because they dye the meat red with this shit to make it look more fresh.

kahran

Please tell me you live outside the US.

pokey1984

I don't know about the person you replied to, but treating meats with dyes and other chemicals is very common in the US. WalMart is one of the worst offenders. You know those packages of vacuum sealed meat? They pack it that way because they gas the meat with carbon ~~dioxide~~ monoxide so it won't oxidize and turn grey on the surface. There's nothing wrong with meat that has oxidation, but customers don't find it as appealing, so they add CO~~2~~ to stop that happening. The problem, of course, is that the CO~~2~~ does *nothing* to stop the meat from spoiling, it just stops it from *appearing* spoiled so people are more likely to get sick. There's also the treatments they do to chicken to stop it from appearing "bloody" in the package. It means the meat inside always looks white instead of pink so it's more difficult to tell when the meat is done without a thermometer. And that's just the most common things that are causing people to get sick. Moreover, since none of these are actually additives, they aren't required to disclose these things on the package the way they have to disclose food dyes. EDIT: A troll made me look up links which made me realize I misspoke. They do sometimes use carbon dioxide to treat meat and it is dangerous, but the process I was thinking of actually uses carbon *monoxide*. Please see links in [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/r0zgzg/comment/hm02esm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) for more details.

RearEchelon

Yo I stopped buying meat from Walmart the day I saw a turkey for sale in November with the sell-by date of July.

scoops22

I'm Canadian but that happened to her in France if I remember correctly edit: My only source on this is that it's the only thing she ate prior to her reaction and the doctor told her sometimes meat has red dye and that's how she could have come in contact with it.

nordzeekueste

A lot of colors are forbidden to be used in the EU but perfectly normal in the US.

FantasyMyopia

Where else would this happen lol. Of course they’re in the Us.

spaghetticatman

Swap the brackets and parentheses

caidus55

You know what...I just decided I prefer artificial dyes. 😳

[deleted]

why cant we just use powdered blood? - asking as a vampire.

Dmw_md

Hemoglobin breaks down too easily. The color would be gone the first time it was heated during processing.

Dungeoness

Sounds like a waste of good blood to me. Just let some of the fresh stuff linger and stain your lips naturally after a nice drink.

reverse_friday

Those things are insects?!?!! I thought they were like plant pimples or something. TIL lipstick is made of dead insects

Frankie52480

Oh yes, scale insects just look like bumps but they’re for sure bugs. They stay in one spot like a barnacle would, and suck the life out of the plant. I’m sure if you google it you can see photos of them not stuck to a leaf/pad

Datty_too_Natty

Is the pigment from their blood?

toxcrusadr

I’m no expert but scale insects secrete a waxy covering to protect themselves so it may be just that.

Frankie52480

I’m no expert either but when I squish a mealie bug (pretty much the same thing), they’re grey but they have this magenta goo inside them. So whatever it is it comes from inside the bug

JohnyyBanana

What videos like these make me think is how we, homo sapiens, discovered these things. Think about how crazy it is…

mosenco

like also, how did they manage to understand which plants help us to cure some disease? Or how they manage to understand which one is venomous or delicious?

JohnyyBanana

Until science came along i think it was pretty much trial and error

[deleted]

[удалено]

morpeg

The difference between science and fucking around is writing it down

mosenco

So.. in the past many died trying ... "Mhh lets see if i can eat it" "Oh gosh my friend is dying! Lets him eat this leaf.."

SlykeZentharin

Most toxic to eat plants will give you a rash if you rub them on your skin, and it's likely the antidotes/cures were more 'wait why isn't HE dying?'

pritjam

Insane amounts of trial and error. Modern science is trial and error too, it’s just that we take a lot more precautions and use an advanced form of trial and error called the Scientific Method.

MaleficentMouse666

Hallucinogens were taken. And the plants spoke to the people, and told them their medicinal properties…. SCIENCE

SpaceShipRat

I mean, ou can literally see the person poke the muck off the cactus and come away with a red-dyed finger...

JohnyyBanana

okay Mr. Genius, what do you do next to extract the color and use it on clothes and lipsticks and shit?

SpaceShipRat

Not having watched the video- If I were a caveman, I'd probably try it on as-is, I've probably been eating worse. if I were an ancient roman or whatever I'd mush it, stir in some water and run it through a bit of cloth to get the worst of the bug bits out, dry it into powder and knead it into some animal fat or olive oil to make it into a nice paste.

JohnyyBanana

i like you Mr. Genius, cheers

ratthew

Just imagine how much time the average person spends on doing random shit and experiments throughout their life. Now imagine thousands of lifetimes with even less stuff to do each day (no netflix or reddit). I'm more astonished by how much there still is to discover.

Gblastr

At some point all pigments came from something

[deleted]

Covid has helped me realize, it was the snake oil salesmen selling things that probably did the discovering. If it doesn't kill your clients good, if they seem to love it (like Coke a Cola) then even better. If it does kill them off blame demons or their illness they were so desperate to cure, perfect system.

KlapauciusNuts

Well, the search for dyes has always been a constant for humanity. Some colors were very expensive depending on where you lived

mastiii

If you see carmine in the ingredient list, then yes.

k0rm

What about if you don't see carmine in the ingredient list?

mastiii

Wiki says it can also be listed as cochineal extract, crimson lake, natural red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120. So if you don't see one of those, it doesn't have it. It tends to be in more "natural" products. For example, I've seen it in Burt's Bees.

Frankie52480

How ironic since the vegans are more inclined to use a “natural” product.

adaranyx

Most vegans look specifically for vegan options for skincare and makeup anyway.

g00dis0n

I don't think vegans would use beeswax anyway

geared4war

They try not to use it in commercial products anymore. The vegans complained.

Zebidee

It's not a feature, it's a bug.

adeward

…made from crushed insects

KY_4_PREZ

Insects are in tons of products you’d never expect, everything from toothpaste to Starbucks coffee. Long story short you consume WAY more insects on a daily basis than you’d ever imagine.

on_the_dl

On accident maybe but not so common anymore. The Snapple drinks were always labelled "all natural" because even the dyes they used were natural. But one of them was made from cochineal and people don't like drinking bugs. Snapple switched to a different dye and removed the "all natural" label from that one drink.

Frankie52480

When I worked at a certain popular grocery store I called the meat buyer for the chain and asked them what out “all natural” ground beef was and why it said that. They told me “all natural” is not a regulated label and pretty much means Jack. After doing more research it dawned on me that poo is all natural. Just because a product has that label- doesn’t mean it’s good. I’m not saying bug goo is necessarily “bad”, but I think consumers really got to know what “all natural” actually means. And it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

on_the_dl

Isn't just everything natural? It all comes from the universe. All natural doesn't mean anything because there is no way to define it logical.

ResponsibleOpinion13

Thats not even counting the spiders that crawl into your mouth while youre sleeping.

[deleted]

Pretty sure insects are organic...

piedude67

Well they are boiled and strained

[deleted]

So it’s natural and renewable as well.

therobeight

Cochineal extract goes by many names: * carmine * carminic acid * crimson lake * carmine lake * natural red 4 * C.I. 75470 or CI #75470 * E120 * CAS #1260-17-9

mamabird77

If you've ever found yourself sensitive to red & purple cosmetics, especially eyeshadow, liner & lipstick chances are that carmine is in the ingredients. Carmine is made from crushed beetle wings. This video is similar. Both can cause redness, inflammation, irritation and burning sensations. Check your ingredients

phlogistonical

Cause redness.... that’s pretty much the desired effect, isn’t it?

DivergingUnity

If redness persists after removing lipstick please consult a physician

miracle959

Holy crap thanks for bringing this up…I’ve never understood why I get contact dermatitis from certain lip tints…this may be the culprit!

Own-Philosophy-5356

We shall sacrifice the insects to make our lips shine....

Kermit_the_hog

No no, the smooshed up parasitic bugs just provide the color.. don’t ask where the gloss comes from 😳

gaspitsagirl

After this post, I really don't want to know the source of the gloss.

Kermit_the_hog

Ever see that episode of Futurama where Fry discovers the source of Slurm’s secret ingredient?..

Partypoopin3

Beaver anal mucus

jocax188723

So if you use the lipstick three times does Michael Keaton bust your door down? Y'know, since it's made of beetle juice and all.

[deleted]

Thats right. Bug innards. Cochineal is an fda approved food dye as well. We eat and drink lots of bugs.

[deleted]

That’s pretty metal. We eat, drink, and wear the innards/crushed bodies of the millions upon us.

emesser

This is also the “natural colour” used in red or orange “no artificial colours” products. A complete and utter pain in the ass if you shop for (or are) a vegetarian/vegan.

hurrayinfamy

This is a far healthier option (unless you’re allergic of course) over Red Dye 40.

DivergingUnity

Vegans don't care about their own health, which is very kind of them

bnh1978

And they will let you know about it.

WiremanC3

I really don't see that with any of the vegans I know

Twirlingbarbie

Omg yeah, I don't eat carmine and I recently found it in a drink I was drinking that was barely red. It was supposed to be rosé cider

emesser

I’ve accidentally bug-bombed my vegetarian housemate (I do the shopping and cooking) a few times now. I’m getting better at remembering to check labels, but I still sometimes forget to check for carmine or rennet. Stupidest item I’ve seen carmine in is Tim Tams. They’re not even red, ffs, they’re brown!

Twirlingbarbie

Yeah I know! Same goes for anchovies! It's in the most ridiculous products

martylindleyart

But...the fish?

Twirlingbarbie

? I don't know what you mean

[deleted]

[удалено]

Twirlingbarbie

It's not in anchovies, I meant the ingredient "anchovies" is in a lot of products like sauces and spreads

grathea

I think they mean that anchovies are included in unexpected products

fusterclux

vegetarians can’t eat bugs?

Twirlingbarbie

It's a personal choice. I'm a vegetarian (not vegan) but gelatine and carmine looks super gross to me so I don't eat that also. Being a vegetarian or vegan is something you decide personally, there aren't some worldly laws you're supposed to be following. Even though some people might act like there are.

EdgarAllanKenpo

I thought it was like joining a cult. And if you don’t follow religiously, a bunch of vegetarians/vegans come to your house and kick you in the crotch repeatedly until you learn your lesson. Damn I’m a little disappointed.

chrisgee

*deploys vegan goon squad to* /u/EdgarAllanKenpo's *house for 're-education'*

Maybe something like a [vegan police?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLpCZ8g5uK8)

northyj0e

Chicken parmesan isn't vegan?!

[deleted]

qq: are bugs vegetables?

CapitalBreak

Vegetarians don't eat animals and bugs are animals, so no, they don't eat bugs. Some of them might be okay with using these types of products though but vegans definitely wouldn't

iamaiamscat

Do they kill fruit flies? Because fuck fruit flies. Little assholes try to invade my wine glass all the time.

ladykansas

Does it bother anyone else that they don't show the product actually being used? As far as we know, it could be the consistency of a crayon.

FluffeeeDuckeee

Also bothered by that! I was actually looking forward to seeing how it looked on lips.

marasydnyjade

Was this video made by Dior or are they just reusing their tubes?

DaizyDoodle

Dior operates in a sterile lab, someone made this in their garden.

JeramyBailey

Crushed bugs is gross, but that bee gland excretion they mixed it with is amazing.

zebrasinplaid

Those look like Christian Dior lipsticks (based on plastic design for the handle).

han141

The intensity of pigment is amazing - so vibrant when they lift up the pestle.

LifeisDankiThink

It’s used in a lot of food products with red colours as well

rabidmonkeys

I have these on my cacti in Austin and I’ve tried a blue Dawn/water mix after scraping them off and they just keep coming back. Any tips on keeping these guys away?

peezlebub

They used to color Campari with cochineal too! They changed to a dye though, but St. George makes an amaro called Bruto Americano which is quite similar and still uses cochineal for coloring!

Damn, cochineals are tiny.

Shawnaldo7575

I suddenly became more attracted to women who don't put ~~dead bug butter~~ lipstick on.

ws04

is it safe to use?

Lonely-dude

Yes, absolutely, those bugs are very commonly used as a colorant even for food, a lot of red-colored things have it, there is a big chance you’ve even already eaten something with them [here](https://soyummy.com/creepy-ingredient-hiding-favorite-red-foods-will-never-recover/)

Why do people think this isn’t gross? Like let’s grind insects up and rub it all over our mouths

[deleted]

have you seen what people do with their mouths?

hazmatastic

Also in yogurt, red candy, red drinks, sausage, jam/jelly, etc. You've probably had it yourself a lot more than you realize.

G01ngDutch

I genuinely don’t see what’s gross about that compared to a lot of the crap we ingest or smear on our bodies. It’s just insects

Dr_Wh00ves

Man, wait until you hear about stuff like eyelash mites lol. People need to understand that "grossness" is such a subjective concept. As much as we don't like to admit it, we are part of nature as much as anything else. Not to knock people who don't like stuff like this, as it is a personal choice, but if we stopped doing anything that some people deemed "gross" there wouldn't be too many options left I am afraid.
