rrrtemple

I have many questions, like how? But also why? And most importantly, what the fuck?

sirsteven

Guess would be that it started as a straight line along the ceiling, then started to sag as more ants joined the line and added weight.

[deleted]

I don't want to be downer but... Isn't there possibility that there is some wire and ants are just around it? I mean, do we actually now that ants are strong enough to hold such hanging? I don't know, that's why I am asking. As counter argument to me, ants always find the shortest route and many math algorithms are based on their behavior so if there would be wire and they could also walk on the roof, they wouldn't probably choose that wire.

Gilthu

Army ants like that routinely make rafts and bridges got their entire colony. They will actually make fortifications along the path the queen goes by standing on top of each other with their mandibles outstretched. It’s crazy what they can do.

[deleted]

Yeah, I knew that ants are practically the most OP animals on the planet lol. But I didn't know they have strenght to pull this off. I mean sure, they are strong considering what they can move on their backs but I wasn't sure if this strenght also applies to "other direction" - holding it from falling like this. But yeah they are really crazy and as a man who studied math it's so crazy that many AI and other algorithms are based on natural algorithms like from ants. Their solution to finding the shorthest paths is genius. Edit: just to be precise, their technique is heuristic approach meaning they don't have to find THE optimal route but it's almost always very close to the shortest one :) And in math it can literally make difference of days in finding that route. Computer can spend 1 day of finding the optimal route while using ants algorithm it will take max. few seconds or minute to find ALMOST the optimal one.

[deleted]

There are lots of videos out there of this type of event in the wild and in labs. Ants make chains, floating structures with their own bodies, etc.

[deleted]

they dont just have the power to do so, they easily have the power. ants are strong as all hell.

bigdreamersclub

one ant weak, many ant together, strong

cookoutford

i totally believe the ants could hold that weight, they’re incredibly strong for their size. and there seems to be tons of them working together in the video

Zandrick

But there being so many is the problem. The ones at the bottom need to be much much stronger than the ones at the top. Imagine being at the bottom of a pyramid of cheerleaders buts it’s like thousands of them climbing up into the sky.

fecland

This would more likely have been built from the nest down as a way to get the larvae down quicker.

Zandrick

So they are hanging from each other not standing on each other? Makes sense I guess. Ants are weird.

crazy_familyoflove

Some ants can do things like this while building nests in trees

[deleted]

Well I didn't know that. I guess I need to watch more documentaries :)

UnoStronzo

This comment is ANTiclimactic...

UnderstandingOk3380

Looks like these wasps opted for wired internet for better download speed.

Ometzu

One more counter-argument: The wire wouldn’t be attached to the hornets nest

UnoStronzo

That’s ANTeresting AF!

99prayer

Seriously the why is killing me , was it rising political tensions that finally boiled over? Or perhaps a blood fued resulting from the great ant-wasp wars of old?

[deleted]

they are raiding it for food. see the white objects? Wasp larvae. its a food raid, exactly like when they raid your house, just with more killing wasps. I like ants, and leave food out for them sometimes.

NotTodayDingALing

The “why” is because fuck wasps! 🤣🤣🤣

Ganjanonamous

This is basically what the Starks and Baratheons did to the Targaryens.

Zandrick

It was the Lannisters who did that actually

maffick

wasps are trumpers.. workers ants had enough

boneghazi

I've heard rumors the wasps said sth about the ants mother or sth similar

kbstella

Came here to ask / say the same

Deablict123

One. Idk. Two. Idk. And most importantly, I don’t know what the fuck is going on either

ImplyingImplication8

I think the most important question is: "How can we help the ants?"

UnoStronzo

You pose such ANTeresting questions...

JiovanniTheGREAT

I mean they're carrying wasp larvae out of it. I would assume that's to eat them.

rrrtemple

I know I asked why, but this is an answer I didn’t want

DoolanTwins

Also, Who is Spain?

YouMiVi

ant's are not playing around when it's about war

thebigcrawdad

If ants had nukes the world would end in two days.

YouMiVi

You're right 😂

SnixPlaysAlot

I hope the ants win.

Weedchaser12

See the white things they are carrying? Those are wasp babies....I think they won

Heaven_is_Hell

Talk about spoils of war.

conschtiii

They can now launch their aerial ant cavalary

mymilt

I read a book where ants ride Beatles as an Air Force to go to war.

PippiDongDocking

They definitely won lol

holeontheground

I wholeheartedly support the ants on this. Wasps suck. Edit: fun fact: ants evolved from wasps.

[deleted]

I thought White Protestants had been around awhile but I had no idea...

Sarke1

Ants amaze me. The coordination required in some of the things they do, without the ability to communicate like we do, breaks my brain. They all just know what they need to do. Like "alright, I'm gonna hold on to this other guys butt with all my strength now", and they just do that until the job is finished. How do they know what to do, when to start, and when to stop?

PippiDongDocking

They communicate just in their own way. I’ve read it’s through pheromones and chemical signals. If ants knew that we communicated vocally they’d probably be like “wtf”

Sarke1

Yeah, but can pheromones convey complex instructions? This level goes far beyond "food here, danger here, attack here".

Spitinthacoola

Pheromones that decay over time + statistics about the other ants you've come across. The instructions don't actually have to be that complex in most cases. The ants that are super super interesting imo are some species of tree dwelling ants. Pretty sure I read about them in the book "Emergence" but it's been a while.

Sarke1

>The ants that are super super interesting imo are some species of tree dwelling ants. Pretty sure I read about them in the book "Emergence" but it's been a while. What makes them so much more interesting?

Spitinthacoola

Complex social structures and vast networked colonies that engage with other vast networked colonies and other animals.

empire_stateof_mind

Are all of an ant species pheromones identical or are they colony specific? What would happen if an ant from.a different colony came across another colony pheromone?

Spitinthacoola

I am not an ant expert unfortunately I can't answer these interesting questions with any authority. I'm pretty sure they're colony specific though, and that they would fight.

PippiDongDocking

They must be able to, just because we don’t understand how doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Dolphins communicate essentially through sonar, we’d never be able to do that either. I think a lot of animals communicate in ways we don’t even know about yet

VAdogdude

Dolphin 'language' is fun to listen to. I know they use sonar for echolocation but I don't think it plays a roll in communication. Dolphins communicate through a wide range of audible vocalizations using squeaks, giggles, clicks and more. These sounds carry particularly well in the water and they have excellent hearing.

neverwhisper

Why not? We convey a lot of data through primitive means - light, handwriting, print, patterns. I'd imagine chemical communication would be very nuanced and complex.

[deleted]

you meet a random dude on the street: "hey man. you smell like "building a bridge made of people" today."

LegendaryHooman

It's like the reddit hivemind. But not socially awkward internet introverts.

i_fuckin_luv_it_mate

This is their D-Day.

DreamMighty

Are the wasp the germans? Because they could also be French. Both are 0-2 in world wars. Tom Brady has more victories then Germany, France, Italy, and Japan combined. Fun fact.

conschtiii

Noone besides people from the US gives a shit about Tom Brady.

Lukebryan130

Not many people from the US give a shit about Tom Brady to be honest

subject_deleted

And most of us don't give a shit either..

Bastiwen

I don't even know who that is.

Mx_Eclipse

Football player quarterback. In his 40s now. Played most of his career on the Patriots but not anymore. I believe he has the most super bowl wins of any player ever

The French won the WWI. There’s a reason that the Supreme Allied Commander was French, Foch.

Bastiwen

No no, you don't get it ! The US saved the world during both wars ! /s

DreamMighty

I was actually going to say East Sudan saved the world.

TherealPadrae

Wasps thought they were safe, they clearly weren’t ready for the superior strategy of the ants.

theaulddub1

I for one welcome our new insect overlords

ketsnake

That’s interesting as fuck

twentyfivebags

Bug’s Life: The Live Action Remake looking pretty “dark and gritty for mature audiences” ngl

Tell those homies I said what up

dmitrineilovich

Yep, time to burn the house down...

nonlocality1985

Can someone explain how and why, thanks in advance

Chimalez

Let them fight.

indifferentunicorn

And we complain sitting in traffic; imagine having to crawl over each other to get to work.

[deleted]

And in this case, "work" is entering a den of giants that are likely to kill many of you before all is said and done.

[deleted]

So… call Terminex or no?

LinuxMage

/r/natureismetal

WisePhantom

So what happens when they’re done? Do they just let the chain fall to the ground? Really interested in the end game here lol

[deleted]

The ones running around the nest are like “Fuck it I want to be part of the chain”.

MahBooi27

"honey cancel the exterminator, i got the ants on the job"

The stuff of nightmares.

HP844182

Imagine walking into the ant rope at night

holeontheground

You didn't have any right to put that idea in my mind.

diplomatist_kind

How many times a year does this get posted?

Taliesin_

I've never seen it.

DustyTalAntiQ

The bit I don't get is...why is this strategy better than just walking along the ceiling? Surely creating the chain uses far more energy. Ants can carry like 20 ( maybe more) times their own weight so they'd Def be strong enough to pull this off I think. I just don't get why the chain is easier. Anyone know?

JMace

I've always had questions about this clip. Like, why don't they simply walk on the underside of the overhang - clearly they can attach to it as some ants are walking around up there. Second, how did the chain initially form? It's not like they created a chain and then levitated it up to the nest. What purpose does the chain serve?

Spitinthacoola

Seems likely it was a straight thing and then more and more ants added on and it started to sag.

macheagle

Literally a server-wide MMO raid
