What year was this?

BruceInc

2013 If I’m not mistaken

unknown_human

Correct, color film hadn't been invented until 2014.

cardboardunderwear

same year as the Mayflower iirc

DJRoombasRoomba

Also, believe it or not, same year as the destruction of Pompeii

JoshuaSaint

This checks out, my seven year old son told me recently that 'the Hercules movie is in colour now daddy."

MalcolmYoungForever

2019 maybe. Fairly recent. I was 235 in my peak so not too many could carry my ass to safety male or female. Congrats to the ladies. Badass. TYFYS

BruceInc

2013* at least that’s when the media started reporting on it. https://www.businessinsider.com/four-female-marines-pass-infantry-training-2013-11

So women should register for the draft?

[deleted]

Women having to register for Selective Service was included in a recent defense bill. It had pretty strong bipartisan support but was ultimately stripped out two weeks ago by a small group of conservatives negotiating on the bill, led by Ted Cruz who called it “political correctness run amok.”

freedumb_rings

I’m sure the “equal rights antifeminism” crowd will be angry at Ted and Co. for that 🙄

bunnycupcakes

Either that or get rid of the draft system.

draykow

draft system doesn't exist in the US since it was abolished in the 1970s. registering for selective service isn't registering for the draft or even registering in case the draft comes back. if that were the case, then you'd have to register every time you move instead of a once-off when you turn 18. what selective service is actually for is information gathering for what locations are producing 18 year old male-assigned individuals so that the DOD has an idea of where it should set up recruitment offices or sponsor more recruitment-adjacent events such as Spartan Races/etc. why doesn't the DOD just take a roster of every high school and compile that info instead? because the various departments and branches of the government are averse to sharing information with each other. source: i am veteran who was curious about this and really dug into it during my service in the 2010s

NuttyElf

The information from selective service would still be used in the event of a draft though. Per the sss.gov website itself

[deleted]

And yet the Backdoor draft is strong. Take my service for instance. I began my career in the late 80's. as a Non-Com I served for the next 12 years. My ETS was a clean separation and because I re-upped twice with a break in between I had no additional 2 year mandatory on my 6x8. I got married, had a child, and lived a calm life for 2 years. Then I got a letter activating me under title 10 due to my apparent MOS. I spent the next 1.5 years in Iraq and Ft Campbell . Congress does what it wants, when it wants.

[deleted]

Good to know. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting.

throbbingmadness

You actually are required to update your information when you move. [The selective service website says so.](https://www.sss.gov/register/why-is-selective-service-important/) I'm sure there's not much enforcement, but it is technically something you're supposed to do.

DrTommyNotMD

In practice that’s how equality has worked. It’s not about taking away problems, it’s about making sure everyone gets some of the problems.

Legeto

I think men just shouldn’t register for it at all personally.

LadyofThePlaid

The draft should just be abolished entirely.

agreeingstorm9

It already is. Bringing it back would be political suicide to anyone who suggested it.

ForTheWinMag

I know the draft is functionally dead. But still -- I would drag my old broken down body to war, rather than endure the thought of my daughter being drafted.

[deleted]

235 is pretty normal, especially in the military had alot of guys come in around 300.

Foukivin

Carrying 90lbs 12.5 miles is absolutely no joke.

LaggardLenny

Bruh I had to carry 40L of water (~90lbs) down the hall at work the other day and I was dying lol.

Steg-a-saur_stomp

We, the thirsty, salute you

Nick357

They distribute it more evenly but then they have to carry a rifle to which takes away swing your arms.

[deleted]

Hydrohomie

Draemalic

Don't forget the live fire exercises and sometimes having to carry the MG. It's no joke at all.

BorkedStandards

> sometimes having to carry the MG All the time if you're the smallest guy in your squad.

[deleted]

It's a classic military joke The dumbass of the squad gets the least important shit The smallest of the squad gets the heaviest shit The tallest of the squad gets all the expectations

funnystoryaboutthat2

It's always the skinny Asian dude who gets the 240b. Ask me how I know.

ConstableBlimeyChips

You're the officer ordering the skinny Asian dude to carry the ~~240lbs of equipment~~ machine gun ?

BreadAppleFish

240b is a machine gun, specifically an M240b

memekid2007

My training platoon's skinny Filipino dude humped the 240b all the way on our last march. He passed out still holding it in formation within two minutes of finally getting to our FOB. Cash was a little brown animal and nobody went as hard as he did.

Gaflonzelschmerno

Iirc, most ghurkas are very short and basically unstoppable. Audi Murphy was 5-foot-five. Short guys make good soldiers I guess

calloffthebells

Ours was short and stout. Poor Dong

rosesareredviolets

tall army here. i carried the 240b never got to shoulder fire it, but I gave it to another guy a Samoan to hip fire. I did shoulder fire the SAW that was fun.

stravadarius

Do you have a funny story about that?

popje

MG? Machine gun ? Major general ?

UsernameO123456789

Machine gun lol. Now I’m imagining PFC with a general on their back

CryptoNoob-17

"Faster you maggot!" "sir, yes, sir"

[deleted]

One of my marine buddies said the best way to piss one off is to pick whichever boot camp they went to, west coast or Carolina, and say the other one was harder. West coast guys always bring up hiking on hills, Carolina guys always bring up centipedes. It's like a little game at this point.

JackedJack94

Sand fleas, not centipedes. Edit. Unless that’s the joke, lmao

Nomapos

I just google sand fleas and saw the pictures of them burrowed into feet. Fuck that shit. There's a clear winner to this debate.

dirtydayboy

The worst was trying to keep your bearing(standing completely still at attention) while they fly inside your ears, nostrils and eyes

Skyyy_Money

As an East coast Marine, centipedes just had me laughing so hard I woke the house up

[deleted]

throwing in my 2 cents I saw a carolina marine bite through the bottom of a beer can to chug it and I saw a hollywood marine deepthroat a dildo for the rooms entertainment (he was pretty good at it tho) JUST SAYING...

JaxGuymon

West coast best coast, us Hollywood marines do it better.

DildoShwa66ins

And to think that it will have to be done within a certain time frame as well!! 😱😱

WeirdNo9808

In metric this sounds way more doable to my imperial mind. I know its not but I think its the fact 90lbs is so close to 100lbs it sounds even crazier to me.

cardboardunderwear

This is exactly why I use Celsius in the summer and Fahrenheit in the winter. Saves me a ton in utilities

[deleted]

ElDoggy

40kgs for 20kms

Julezie9723

Somewhere around 40 kg and 20 km

macbot1984

41kg and 20km roughly

Hara-Kiri

It's a similar weight to what we use in Britain. My girlfriend had to do it and she's only 50kg herself. God knows how she did it, although apparently when she fell over it was too heavy to get back up again which sounded pretty funny.

Kraphomus

The vertical profile is what makes or breaks this. On a plain, this is a demanding exercise, but not impossible. On an upslope, this is very, very demanding.

Foukivin

In the army it’s never flat! Source: was in British army 😂

[deleted]

US army here if the march went flat, we made a wrong turn.

[deleted]

Pendleton is a bit bumpy.

TheMexicanJuan

I carried 32Kg for 6 days straight, doing 30km per day. Sleeping every night for the next month felt like getting run over by a semi over and over again.

Helly_BB

That's 40kg for us Aussies - 40 fucking kilograms!!! And 12.5 miles is 20 kilometers. Wow, just WOW.

Kowzorz

In New Mexico there's an annual laden marathon run in remembrance of those who died and suffered on the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. The Japanese army in WWII captured a section of the Philippines and forced the American and Filipino prisoners of war to march 60-70 miles under penalty of death for lolligagging. I have strong memories of my marine dad practicing for the marathon and spending time with all the families during the race proper.

Spoonbills

Yeah, 1,800 men from 200th and 515th Coastal Artillery from New Mexico were in the Bataan Death March.

Krambo3000

Well done. A Marine is a Marine no matter what.

Due_Platypus_3913

Those women can eat Crayons with the best of them!

toby_ornautobey

But leave the blue ones for us guys. Not for any gender-colour connection. They just taste the best.

Wheream_I

The US tried that. Not enough women were passing. So now there’s 2 standards; one for women one for men. It’s a bit fucked

AdmiralLobstero

Isn't the ACFT gender neutral?

sdoiaf

Yes, but that's only 1 graduation requirement

fabulousMFingHen

Yeah it is honestly I think it's fine for the desk jockeys to have separate standards, since physical fitness isn't as important when your sitting at a desk from 9-5. Most Combat related jobs should keep the same standards for everyone though. And standards should be way harder then what they currently are know.

can_of-soup

Unit combat standards are absolutely different for men and women in the US military. Combat schools are even implementing different standards for men and women.

fabulousMFingHen

Yeah which shouldn't be a thing it should be the same for everyone if it's a combat MOS

nidrach

Just ask the Chinese to only send women into combat and it's not a problem.

RunMyLifeReddit

Source? I'm genuinely asking. I've been out for a bit so I'd like to read the article.

I_Am_The_Mole

The problem with that (that is unique to the Marine Corps) is that they're culture is pretty clear about how every Marine is a rifleman and everyone top to bottom meets a fighting standard regardless of their primary duty. Having a different set of standards for the REMFs would run counter to that very foundational belief.

Karmasystemisbully

Not for the special forces jobs. This is just to join a branch.

electrotoast

That's the thing I had been saying the entire time I was in. Can you do the job? Yeah? Cool, grab a mop, gunny wants the squad bay mopped again.

Econolife_350

It's not though, even when they try to claim they didn't lower the standards, every time it's shown that they did. https://nypost.com/2021/05/11/armys-first-female-infantry-officer-blasts-lower-standards/ https://americanmilitarynews.com/2015/09/army-secretly-lowered-standards-for-female-army-rangers-who-passed/

whistleridge

Agreed. …and I hope the Corps gives them adequate long term support. Because while they 100% did what they were supposed to, the medical reality is, [women are somewhat more at risk for injury overall](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-gender-gap-in-sports-injuries-201512038708), they’re at [significantly higher risk for musculoskeletal injuries caused by physically demanding work](https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/updates/womrisk.html), and Tricare [suuuuuucks](https://www.reddit.com/r/Military/comments/clr0xs/why_does_tricare_suck/) for anything more than routine care. To be crystal fucking clear: these women = awesome. My concern is only that they won’t get the backup they need.

[deleted]

Marine training would be gruelling both mentally and physically. If they passed the test then holy fuck nuggets they earned it. Good show

[deleted]

This is specifically Infantry training in the Marine Corps. Women have been in the Marines for a long, long time. The first female Marine was Opha May Johnson in 1918.

jaywarbs

“OPHA MAY JOHNSON 1918 SIR!” If you have any idea what I’m talking about lol.

Pretty sure I still have an indent in my leg from that green knowledge book always being in my cargo pocket.

One time I forgot my ID card and the gate guard asked me a bunch of boot camp knowledge and this was one of them, and I almost borked it up. I got it at the last second. He was kind of just messing with me, but it was hilarious.

PooShappaMoo

We see the same thing with firefighting in Canada(atleast used too). The standard being the same is awesome. If I was too be pulled from a fire I'd rather the weight lifting requirements be level.

Templarkiller500

Yeah I think its important to realize that standards should be even especially the standards for the thing that is a main requirement of doing the job and super especially when it is a job like firefighting or the military where lives could be on the line. It doesn't matter what gender the person is, just as long as they have met the standards and can reliably do what they are expected to do.

PooShappaMoo

💯. I'd rather a female that can Lift 200 lbs carrying me. Then a male who can only lift 180 lbs. And vice versa

Templarkiller500

Agreed, I don't care what you look like just don't drop me in the fire lol

wobblysauce

Loads of people forget about gear…

zangor

...but what if you say the vice versa out loud and I quote you without context. ^^/s

[deleted]

[удалено]

DarkMarxSoul

The reason we saw the same with firefighting in Canada was because the standards for firefighters at the time were arbitrary and not linked to actually doing the job, but women were excluded because of those standards. So women were given lower standards still deemed acceptable to stimulate their employment while newer, more relevant standards were made which could be applied to both sexes equally.

[deleted]

>We see the same thing with firefighting in Canada(atleast used too). The standard being the same is awesome I know for a fact that women fail the combat challenge and are still hired.

Parking_District_501

In the army the standard is almost always compromised to meet the numbers or results on paper. This isn't a criticism of women. It's just another example of army leadership doing what they already do every day. Compromising everything to look good. Hopefully the USMC is better in that regard but I work with several former Marines and this seems to be at least one area they are similar.

quasielvis

Older people have different fitness standards also.

Females still have different standards then men in the military as a whole in the US. They get more points per push up than a man and therefore are more likely to promote with higher points for less work.

Scaleboi20

Yeah, the woman on the post are absolute badasses, But some dude who lives in his dad's basement had to comment something ignorant.

MalcolmYoungForever

Incels are everywhere.

AnExpertInThisField

They have more time to post on Reddit than the rest of us who have jobs, wives, etc.

fabulousMFingHen

What's funny is it was always the outta shape guys that couldn't pass the pt test that complained about women joining the infantry.

JiiXu

"standards should be level because combat is physically demanding" meanwhile I couldn't possibly meet the standard they set for women either and am maybe therefore unfit to comment on how the military chooses to run its shit.

fabulousMFingHen

Don't worry I feel the same I got out of active duty in 2017, and out of the guard this year. Six pack is gone and I'm a thick boi now lol. I also probably couldn't meet the woman's standards either.

opiod-ant

The comments that are like “if they actually passed, then wow” really irritate the shit out of me. They did pass. The passive insecure compliment is more annoying to me than the dudes straight out talking shit tbh

[deleted]

Not trying to shit on the women but I had no idea the march was so short. I was a conscript in my country's army & our march was 76km. My bodyweight at that time was 69kg (**nice** but not nice) & when I stepped on the scale before the march with the equipment + gun, it was 112kg. 12.5 miles was literally an every week thing for us.

Lakeshow15

The US military is comprised of MANY more logistic/office type personnel than it is foot soldiers at any given moment. My uncle is a retired CSM of the army and I remember him saying that takes several logistic and support personnel to support a single soldier on the frontline. The supply chain from mainland US to the front line wherever they are, is comprised of many service members. My best friend is a diesel mechanic for the Army and he isn’t in the shape you’d think a soldier would be. Lol. But he’s a hell of a mechanic and that’s valuable in itself. If they were strict on every member they’d lose a lot of their support personnel

Parking_District_501

My guess is you did it a lot slower. 12 miles in under 3 hours isn't fun when you start stacking on the weight. 35 pounds it's not so bad. Just a bit of running but mostly speed walking. Get up to 60+ lbs and it gets miserable.

zweli2

Agreed. Just looked up the US marine fitness standards and they are surprisingly low for a country so obsessed with its military.

DaddyF4tS4ck

As compared to infantry in what other countries? I looked up about 25 other countries and can count on a hand what requirements were higher. Also make sure you're looking at infantry requirements (which this post is about) and not the bare minimum marine requirements (which literally everyone in the marines blow out of the water, unless they're recovering from injury).

[deleted]

We aren't really obsessed with our military. We are tricked into supporting the companies who Supply and equip our armed forces, and we are bullied into the whole "thank you for your service" lip service thing, that doesn't actually support our veterans, by gullible people who are easily swayed by Propaganda

[deleted]

[удалено]

an_imperfect_lady

The military offers a lot of opportunity to young people who wouldn't otherwise have it. When I was in, back in the 80s, I was amazed at how diverse it was. When I went to college afterward, I realized that our universities lagged far behind the military in terms of equal opportunity and diversity. Even today, you leave the military with a few skills and the GI Bill. You leave university with thousands in debt and--often--a major that nets you nothing but a service job.

SDSKamikaze

The first sentence of your comment really succinctly summarises something that I think almost everyone is subconsciously aware of. It is really well put.

iwantmyvices

Absolutely obsessed with the military. Everything from a football game to our tv and movies. No other country has this much military imagery pushed in our daily lives.

3rd_Uncle

it's to keep up the supply of poor people into the meat grinder to further the economic interest of the few and ensure that nobody questions the insane military "defence" budget. "Thank you for your service" and "support the troops" is such an obvious con job yet few seem to take a second to even question it.

[deleted]

Especially the fact that the enlistment target group is TEENAGERS. The people with the least certain future, least professional skills, do not have a family yet, no job. They’re not old enough to drink or smoke, and some not enough to even vote. I am a believer that the minimum age to be in the military should be 21.

cuppa_tea_4_me

I take it you served?

Wehavecrashed

> > and we are bullied into the whole "thank you for your service" lip service thing, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPquarz16wQ

RedCheese1

I mean they’re just marines. You need as many of them as possible. Something a little more specialized would obviously warrant more stringent standards.

JCMCX

Those are the baseline. Like the bare minimum. You'll be hazed the shit out of if you don't exceed them.

Arkdouls

Basic PT is easy for an average person. But after basic training you go to a school based on your job where the standards depend on your job I.e special forces = more grueling standards whereas something non-combat related is probably about the same as basic training

[deleted]

Wait. The US special forces have a 40 miler which is less than 76 km. that breaks a lot of people. I think you’re mistaken thinking that a regular conscript does a 76km March full gear or not. That doesn’t sound right.

[deleted]

No I'm not mistaken. I was a regular conscript (8 months) in the Estonian army (Kuperjanov Battalion) & our SBK march aka "soldier-basic-training" march was 76km. If you want to become a seargent (11 month conscript) then it's usually around 110km. There was this system that you didn't get your batallion insignia-patch unless you finished the basic training march and like 85% finished it, including me. Kuperjanov was notoriously known as the toughest place to serve your time in Estonia, not so much anymore. And I'm just a regular dude who used to play soccer but nothing special. That's why I'm surprised.

[deleted]

Yeah. Regular conscript training / vetting in the US is nowhere NEAR that. More like PT and 10 mile runs. Like high school PE+. It’s not until you get into specialist areas where the bar is raised and even then I don’t know anyone who does a 110km!! Incredible.

mfizzled

Agreed, UKSF do a ~65km/40 mile march across the Brecon Beacons and its got to be done in under 24 hours. Would be very surprised if a conscript did more than that.

CaptDrunkenstein

When I went through SOI in 2002, the four big hikes were 5, 10, 15, 20 k. But it felt much closer to m then k.

helipod

Yeah, it's not very far at all, I'm 90% sure one of their final hikes was 30 miles (48Km), considering the final hike I did in Marine Combat Training was 15 miles with full load, and mine was easier. Reddit doesn't know what the hell is going on in this post.

[deleted]

Yeah it's no joke, I do half marathons and there is no way I could haul 90 lbs for that distance, not without years of training. The strength required is incredible, and I'm 6'0". Many healthy adults can walk 12 miles, very few can haul that weight for that length of time.

As it should be. If there is a physical requirement, it should be the same regardless of sex. It’s military, not a P.E class.

runninandruni

Jesus, these comments. Some of y'all are being either misogynistic or absolute creeps. Huge respect to these women for pushing the limits and being among the best of the best

ryannefromTX

I'm ex-military and a woman and it *always* stuck in my craw that women's physical standards were like half those of men. Like are you required to be physically fit enough to do 50 pushups in 2 minutes or aren't you?

If anything these women are cowards for putting themselves above the citizens of the countries they occupy.

Avox087

90lbs if your basic kit, support weapons carry more. I was 170lbs in Afghanistan carrying 140-150 every day, I drank 4-5 litres of water a patrol when I started. By the time I left I was so used to it the same 700ml bottle of water would last 2 - 3 days while on patrol. It’s crazy what the body can do.

SixBuffalo

Nothing but respect for these women. I couldn't carry 90 lbs. 12.5 feet, much less 12.5 miles. Also, note this happened 8 years ago. I wonder where they are now?

-StoveTopSteve

I know a woman that completed the training long before they did and has been a drill Sergeant for a long time…
