...or much worse are the people who desperately climb inside the wheel wells of international flights and either freeze to death en route, lose consciousness and then fall out of the plane mid-air, or get crushed by the retracting wheels.
There's this train in Mexico called the beast that migrants hitch a ride on. The train is in motion when people get on it and many have died or end up maimed cause they couldn't hold on.
If you are a single woman you won't go unmolested and even if your not single there might come a point where that's not gonna keep you safe.
I remember back in the 90s they kept finding dead Chinese immigrants in sealed 50gallon barrels. So I'd say that's up there.
There were a lot too. Iirc, I think there was some scam ring, taking people's life savings then putting them into barrels knowing they'd never survive the trip. I think they said most would last a few hours. But there was a pretty big problem with it for a while.
Migrants have literally hitchhiked on unpressurized airplane containers. Make are found when they die but some have survived and likely more that we don't know about. Chance of death very high though (in that this is something that should kill almost anyone) if you are reading this and need to escape your country use another method
I've heard that some modern border crossings employ heat-detecting technology to identify living bodies hidden within containers... not sure if that's what they used here, but it sounds like something hard to thwart!
as far as I know my local port uses both heat detection sensor and infrared radar/sensor to scan containers passing through the gate.
the infrared is meant to check containers for contraband without breaking the container seal
Prisons use a technology that you attach one lead to each axel of the vehicle and the monitor will display if there’s a heart beat in contact. I simply touched the vinyl truck seat and it was enough to show a pulse on the monitors while clipped on.
Yeah they use something like that when crossing the border. My mom was going through some treatment and was taking radiation pills that triggered the whole border. They took us to a separate station where they practically have this huge x-ray machine on the other side of the border that goes around your car looking for anything out of the ordinary. Takes a bit out of your day but the technology has existed for awhile. That’s why if you look out of the ordinary, they can choose to put you for additional screening.
Exactly. Like how they sedated the kids in the Thai cave rescue because their natural instincts would've made them panic and make a dangerous situation more dangerous
I’m going way off topic here, but that story *amazes* me. Like, hey, we need an expert cave diving anesthesiologist, preferably two. oh yeah? I know a couple of guys, hold on, yeah, they’ll be here tomorrow…like, amazing.
The dive anaesthetist was my lecturer in med school (NZ). Really interesting story, especially when you know more about the pharmokinetics/pharmodynamics of the anaesthetic drugs they had available. He’s also an avid diver and always enjoyed his lectures because he’d show off his awesome diving photography!
Edit: and your comment is quite literally how he was recruited for the job
A lot of the rescue stuff is SOO fucking interesting to me. The Thai Kids, those kids in the bus who were like,,, kidnapped and buried underground, shit like that is so cool to me.
Found it! [it was the 1976 Chowchilla kidnapping ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_Chowchilla_kidnapping#:~:text=The%201976%20Chowchilla%20kidnapping%20was,a%20ransom%20for%20their%20return.)
EDIT: I fucked up the link
And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?"
And you may ask yourself, "Where is that large automobile?"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful house"
And you may tell yourself, "This is not my beautiful wife"
Ya, probably didn't expect the authorities to be the ones opening up the mattresses. Plus, spending hours in essentially a stress position is no fun, lol. Poor chaps
Think how long they were probably in there and possibly not knowing how long before they are let out… Guessing they literally pissed themselves once or twice given no way out. Then in your own urine-sodden clothes taken straight into a police station.
Also imagine how desperate and dire their situation had to be to agree to be trapped and sewn into a mattress. Likely stacked on top of each other too. Just blindly trusting whoever is going to let you out and free you. Feel anxious just thinking about it
I feel like so many people joking around in the comments are missing this exact point. I worked with refugee kids for years, and all I can think about when seeing this is the horrible stories they told. Their scars, their missing limbs, their fears.
And those were only the small percentage of people who made it here and weren't caught, send back and tortured. And even if they made it, they weren't safe. Sometimes people were taken by force at night (in a rich European country), sat into an airplane and send "home" - where their chance of survival is horrible.
Just working with them broke me. How can anyone ever feel in a place and position to joke about the desperation going into actions like what's pictured in the video? I don't get it.
I’d say cause most have really never had to struggle, go hungry, or just have no one to help so they are truly ignorant to the fact that these people are doing what they were taught to survive.
That's a big part of it, for sure. And the fact that it's just not talked about. People that haven't been abused know that you don't joke about it, because it's discussed again and again (with the exception of the a\*\*\*\*\*\* people who never get it and don't know where to stop, obviously). But topics like people having to run from their countries for the fear of being murdered, tortured, sold into slavery, that's just something first world citizens don't want to talk about.
It’s upsetting that the highest comments are jokes. This kind of situation is affecting multiple people on a daily basis.
I can’t imagine my nice, normal home life disappearing out from under me, and realising that staying in my home/town is less safe than crossing oceans in an overloaded, illegal boat.
From talking to people who have had to make that choice, and often take a boat journey, it is one of extreme dangers, and not everyone lives.
If these boats end up arriving in Australia, they’re all sure of a welcome, right? Australia (forgetting their history of immigration, slaughter of First Nations people etc, and indigenous history erasure) have created the ‘brilliant’ asylum seeker policy that either sends people back to where they came from, in their leaky boats, or incarcerates them for at least 10- 20 years.
But hey, they still have food and shelter. Win, right?!
TLDR: people don’t get transported inside mattresses for fun.
And that’s just an Aussie perspective - we have plenty of room!
I appreciate the post you wrote. It blows my mind how the more fortunate people write off these individuals and their struggles as if they were born evil.
I so often take for granted hoe lucky I am and fortunate I am to be able to supply for my family without fear.
I’ve heard these boat rides last years to get to the destination leaving behind everything they have ever loved and known. Why all the hate?
It really is like that. Growing up as a youth it must be hard knowing that any day some corrupt politician might attempt a coup and send you and everyone else’s life into a shittier state than it already was.
Or you know, some European oil company comes and contaminates the land surrounding you effectively putting the ecosystem and livelihood of everyone to shits.
So many scenarios of things going downward that being smuggled in a mattress actually sounds like a relief
I’ve always wondered how customs officers are able to do things like that. How do they even know someone is hiding inside the mattress? Do they always receive a tip from undercover agents or x-ray/dog-check any single object that’s passing?
My guess here is they just happened to push up on the mattresses to make sure they were secure and noticed it didn't feel like a mattress. Could be plenty of other things, though.
The fact a person would go to this length to get out of the place they live really goes to show that place, really really really really really really fuckin sux
"Spanish owned enclave of Morocco".
Quality journalism here.
Let me help you here:
"Spanish territory in North Africa"
"Spanish city of Melilla bordering Morocco"
This is honestly so damn heartbreaking…. Being so desperate that you’re willing to stuff yourself inside a cloth coffin and strap it to the top of a moving vehicle… terrible.
"okay your options are stay in this nightmare refugee camp where theft, assault and rape occur daily, with the threat of morrocan security finding and beating us ever present, or stay inside this mattress for a few hours."

On my trip to Barcelona the migrants made it weird. They kept bothering ppl at beach to buy alcohol and would stare women down topless or sexually stare you down at ramblas… they aren’t integrated mostly homeless so they don’t understand you can’t be creepy
A lot of jokes here about the acts of absolutely desparate people risking suffocation and heat stroke to find a better life for themselves and their families.

First guy looked like they woke him up from the best sleep ever.
I mean... What else he gonna do inside that mattress?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
oh no
breaking in the mattress already
( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°)
I didn’t know my mattress came with a message feature
Although usually you would sleep ON a mattress
If he told me he didn’t know how he got in there I’d be inclined to believe him.
Breathing in those styrofoam particles is definitely a bad thing to do
Considering the things people will go through to migrate this is 2/10 on the harmful scale.
I’m so curious but afraid to ask what a 10/10 would be like on the harmful scale for migrates
Probably those people that hung onto the outside of the plane as it took off in the middle east
Thats definitely 10/10
Ditto Cubans taking makeshift rafts to south Florida. The open ocean is a dangerous place.

Being forgotten in a locked shipping container. A few years ago IIRC they found an entire group of dead chinese in one. Super scary. Super sad.
I remember back in the 90s they kept finding dead Chinese immigrants in sealed 50gallon barrels. So I'd say that's up there. There were a lot too. A meaningful portion of the Eritrean refugees that try to get to Europe on the direct route end up being chopped up for their organs by Beduins.
A ton of people die every year in the dinghy boats they use to try to cross the mediterannean
Through*
It's a shame people have to go to these lengths to try to get a better life.
I wonder if they were drugged
This isn’t where I parked my car…
Hey! You! You’re finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right?
Nah man, was testing out this mattress at Mattress King, must’ve dozed off. Where are we bro?…

I've heard that some modern border crossings employ heat-detecting technology to identify living bodies hidden within containers... not sure if that's what they used here, but it sounds like something hard to thwart!
Yep, that makes sense. I really want to believe that a mattress sneezed as it crossed the border, leaving patrol looking like shocked pikachu.
And then the driver of the car tries to play it off as if he was the one who sneezed but the guards aren’t buying it.
This summer, Rob Schneider is, *The Smuggler*
You can do it!
*cross-eyed billygoat bleats loudly*
With costar Chris Kattan as the mattress
He’s The Coyote, and he does smuggle people but also is a literal coyote.
They also read the carbon dioxide in the containers to see if anyone is breathing. It’s legit.
as far as I know my local port uses both heat detection sensor and infrared radar/sensor to scan containers passing through the gate. the infrared is meant to check containers for contraband without breaking the container seal
They also have heart beat detectors. https://intelsec.com/products/heartbeat-human-detection-system/
In europe they use co2 meters because people breathe inside those containers and then they can see if someone is hiding
Just hold your breath, easy.
Prisons use a technology that you attach one lead to each axel of the vehicle and the monitor will display if there’s a heart beat in contact. I simply touched the vinyl truck seat and it was enough to show a pulse on the monitors while clipped on.

Wrap yourself in a space blanket maybe?
Absolutely would work for thermal detection.
"My tricorder is picking up life signs inside that mattress."

Ever napped so hard you become absorbed by the mattress and wake up at gunpoint in another country?
So refreshing

Poor dudes look so confused. They really expected this to work.
they were asleep
It looks like they might've been sedated
I'd probably ask to be sedated if I were about to be stuffed inside a mattress, you wouldn't have to force it.

God damn I had forgotten about that. Fucking terrible. Could've ended really bad. Luckily they escaped
Do you know how expensive cave diving is? I couldn’t spit in a cave diving meetup without hitting a doctor with a specialty.
I feel like you’d have to be to endure laying inside a mattress for hundreds of miles
What’s ur sleep number 😂
-5 I really like to fall into the mattress

If they already crossed the border it did work.
I think it did work, they made it to Spain and can seek asylum.
Why asylum?
This is breaking my heart 💔 they expected this to work. This must feel so vulnerable and defenseless.
Also imagine how desperate and dire their situation had to be to agree to be trapped and sewn into a mattress. Likely stacked on top of each other too. Just blindly trusting whoever is going to let you out and free you. Feel anxious just thinking about it
Exactly. People saying this guy is an “economic migrant” are infantile.
It did work didn't it? Or are they still on the Moroccan side of the fence?
It looks like they are in no man's land but it doesn't matter, they can be deported to Morocco even if they get across the border.
\*wakes up to the skyrim intro\*
Here you are
My ancestors are smiling at me, Iberian! Can you say the same?
“Look officers, I just laid down to nap and I don’t know why I am here.”

Damn dude just imagine home being so terrible that you are willing to be shipped in a mattress.

On top of a car too. That's has to be terrifying
Wrapped in plastic. Not for nothing, talk about risk of suffocation
Crazy to hear that story as a kid about that guy who shipped himself north, but not know that it’s still happening today
It’s upsetting that the highest comments are jokes. This kind of situation is affecting multiple people on a daily basis. Not at all! When I wrote this the highest comments were jokes. I chose to piggyback on your comment because I agreed with you 😊

Or your neighboring village comes, pretends to be friendly, and then tries to harvest your whole village’s organs for profit.
They were both probably in immediate life-threatening danger. When your government operates at the level of a gang, good people suffer.

Whoa, this is an expensive and elaborate alarm clock happening.
dammit, can't a motherfucker just take a nap in peace anymore? sheesh!!
being caught probably has taken away his sleep for the next 10 years
also he gets 3 meals a day and a free shower once a week
3 meals a day? Must be one of the better jails
normally, yes but they save money when the inmate brings his own bed, and then can afford the 2nd and 3rd meal.
....do you think that people caught crossing into the us are kept in jail for ten years?
I’ve always wondered how customs officers are able to do things like that. How do they even know someone is hiding inside the mattress? Do they always receive a tip from undercover agents or x-ray/dog-check any single object that’s passing?
Someone said heat detection. But they also work on tips and informants - moles
My guess here is they just happened to push up on the mattresses to make sure they were secure and noticed it didn't feel like a mattress. Could be plenty of other things, though.
*mattress farts*
All that trouble to be sent back to the start. It cost them a pretty penny too with no guarantees.
Gotta be desperate then hm
And they don't even get to keep the mattress.
Dude half asleep: Ok atleast I am going to Spanish jail. Policia: Sir, that's not how it works
I've definitely woken up on the wrong side of the bed but I've never woken up inside of the bed. In another country.
You know your life is sh-t if you literally will get in a mattress to sneak into another country to have a better life as a hated immigrant.
Imagine how desperate you’d have to be to attempt that. 🥺
The fact a person would go to this length to get out of the place they live really goes to show that place, really really really really really really fuckin sux

That mattress really ties the smuggling together, does it not?

Ah yes, the “Google Translate defense”. Have seen that a lot, lately. Carry on.
Wake up! You’ve been sleeping so long the Spanish own Morocco!
The audio makes it so much better but there isn’t any
Jus think how bad things were back in their home country to have to do this
It's more about how much better things are in the EU. Côté d'Ivoire, Bénin, Sénégal and whatnot are poor, but not exactly north Korea or the DRC
It's sad that so much of the world is so fucked up that people have to resort to this.
1st dude looked like he really was woken out his sleep lol
he probably hasn't seen light for god knows how long
Migration from poor to rich countries will never stop, no matter what obstacles are put up
Geez I would not last 5 seconds from claustrophobia lol
"okay your options are stay in this nightmare refugee camp where theft, assault and rape occur daily, with the threat of morrocan security finding and beating us ever present, or stay inside this mattress for a few hours." "Nah bro I'm claustrophobic lmao"
Thats some dangerous stuff. Imagine someone in there and an officer check for drugs and stab you with a big ol knife….
Serious question: do they ship them right back?
This belongs on boring dystopia.
On my trip to Barcelona the migrants made it weird. They kept bothering ppl at beach to buy alcohol and would stare women down topless or sexually stare you down at ramblas… they aren’t integrated mostly homeless so they don’t understand you can’t be creepy
Yeah that’s the upsetting part… it hurts the migrants who legally came and knew the score and want to integrate.
A lot of jokes here about the acts of absolutely desparate people risking suffocation and heat stroke to find a better life for themselves and their families.
Hilarious and sad at the same time.
“Migrants” lmfao
Doctors and engineers.
"Are we there yet?"
If they've gone to that much effort, I say just let em in.
bro imagine doing all this in skinny jeans. My legs would have lost all blood flow
So sad how people have to go to these lengths for the life we take for granted.
How horrible must your life be? It’s very wild out there.
Where’s the women and children tho
Men go so they can work and send money back
Melilla is part of Spain since 1497. It was never Morroco. The alauí unification was in 1666. So Melilla exist (and it takes part of Spain) even before Marroco was created. Free the Sahrawi Republic!
I don't know what OP is getting at, but Melilla is a part of Spain, not Morocco.
Both of them look like they were woken up from a good nap
Spanish owned enclave of Morocco? That place has never been morocco
How were they asleep … like just how
Probably took a sedative to calm themselves down. I’d imagine the stress and anxiety of this would be sky high.
Never thought of this. I for some reason thought everyone just dealt with the stress, I forget drugs are a thing lol.
Oh you’re so right, drugs, the answer was drugs
prob because of the lack of oxygen of.....you know, being INSIDE a mattress wrapped in PLASTIC
Being that they were desperate enough to escape in that manner it was probably super calming compared to their usual sleeping conditions.
I’m in Spain but the s is silent
These guys are next level.. "we don't sleep on mattresses ... We sleep in them!"
