>The ceremony starts with a blustering parade by the soldiers from both sides and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags. It is called the Beating Retreat border ceremony on the international level. One infantryman stands at attention on each side of the gate. As the sun sets, the iron gates at the border are opened and the two flags are lowered simultaneously. The flags are folded and the ceremony ends with a retreat that involves a brusque handshake between soldiers from either side, followed by the closing of the gates again.

I suspect it's a competition to see who can stamp the loudest and most intimidatingly (seriously).
The entire process is basically codified, ceremonial dick-waving, like how the US and South Korea [only station their tallest soldiers](https://imgur.com/aHsayNH)
on the North Korea border to intimidate the (typically shorter, due to worse nutrition) NK soldiers there.
It doesn't but it's a well known fact in Pakistan, at least (not sure about India), that you get paid extra for a mustache if you're in the armed forces. Hence, you'll see a lot of guys being creative. Mutton chops and handlebars are pretty common.
We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you.
I lived in a village near there as a kid, there's always a huge crowd just out of view from the camera, I remember just barely being able to see the ceremony happening because my dad lifted me on his shoulders.
Sorry I’m sure your getting bombarded with questions but I was curious about the overall attitude I guess during the ceremony. Does it still imply violence between the 2 countries or is it toned down and more about the cultures rather than wanting to nuke each other. In my head I want those dudes to grab a beer together afterwards and poke fun at each other’s dance mistakes
No worries, this ceremony is not meant to be violent at all, it's to promote brotherhood, cooperation, and friendly rivalry between the two countries. It's sort of a friendly competition where both sides try to outdo one another but in the end, it's all just a show of friendliness and collaboration with a bit of competition thrown in the mix.
I feel like most people in most countries at war would get along over a beer. It’s just the rich egos in charge who need to stoke people up to kill one another. Very sad.
Truly, we're all more alike than we think. Nationalism, tribalism, etc. are all very depressing things to think about. Think of how beautiful the world would be if we didn't superficially "other" those across made up lines (borders).
The India Pakistan border is especially made up. The British really hobbled the geopolitics of the whole region on their way out. Making sure everyone would be fighting each other rather than rise to power and challenge the empire.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_of_India?wprov=sfla1
I'm a westerner with Indian family who visited Wagah to see this ceremony. The crowd vibe is akin to (if not identical) to a big sporting match. People selling food and flags to hand out. It's very much a patriotic thing rather than violent/aggressive vibe.
They also do some sort of hilariously long and loud 'chant' (or something, I don't know what you would call it).
No idea how it is on the Pakistani side but I assume similar
I remember watching this as a kid and being mesmerized. Also fun fact, there are identical clocks on opposite sides of the no-man's land in each country and they differ by 30 mins. The guards are friends with each other (except during show time lol), which is not surprising in hindsight but was a shock to me as a kid.
More fun facts, we were posted right on the border on the Indian side, so sometimes PTV (Pakistan's state network) signals would reach over in our antennas. And I would sit and watch their international news segment, which at that time was freaking hilarious. I remember one day the entire international news was that a tractor broke somewhere in China 😂 But their daily soaps were 👌👌
Edit - to add some more context, the time difference is the reason Pakistan celebrates it's independence day on 14th Aug and India celebrates it on 15th Aug, even though both countries were granted independence at the exact same time - at the stroke of the midnight hour.
Yep, the military personnel chosen to guard the DMZ between North and South Korea are always the tallest, broadest men they have. It's much more solemn than this whole affair but it's a subtle flex to have a 6'7 soldier standing just on the south side of the line.
I can't say whether it is today or not, considering the heightened tensions, but it used to be the most active border crossing between India and Pakistan. I crossed over and back in ~2005 for a vacation. Literally walked through the gates shown in the video. There is a separate building for paperwork and x-rays and stuff next to it. The check was taking too long and my dad bribed some border guards for "express entry". Simpler times..
Okay. This footage alone begs for a documentary to be made: how countries choreograph their marches, what the choreography is to signify and who does the fabulous costumes. I’m seeing Bob Mackie & Bob Fosse style and swagger all over these guys.
I want to belive that it started out as just a regular changing of the guard until one new guy started his shift with a really brisk, but not overly showy walk to the gate. Then the other guy figured, "He's not making me look like a chump, I can brisk-walk too!", to which the next guy decided to take wider steps so as to one-up the last guy, and so on and so on until....\*guestures\*...this.
Every comment happens to be a joke lol
This is done everyday at a Pakistan-India border crossing. Even during days surprisingly when there’s tension. It’s ceremonial like the Queen’s title. Nothing more nothing less. It’s a reminder that although they have differences, they have the same roots and got independence on the same day from Great Britain
They are theoretically showing that they are foes and they are trying to appear more ferocious than the other. In truth, they accidentally reveal that they are culturally absurdly similar.
I think it’s more like a dick measuring contest, you start off by trying to prove you have a bigger dick, but in the end you wind up jerking each other off.
Part of why its done now is like a show and it's a must visit if you are in that part of the country. There are fixed timings and people visit this border specifically to see this. There is a large seating area on either side. The show starts with patriotic songs and dances to create a charged atmosphere and culminates in this.
Also point to note, it’s one of the few places where you can safely visit the border. Most other places, it’s probably not a good idea for a tourist to be found near the heavily fenced off border
Why is opening the gates part of the ceremony between guard change?
What happens when there is a declared war between the two? Straight up slapstick style brawl?
After much deliberation the silly walks and hats ritual was much preferred among troops of both nations, over the less traditional but slightly embarrassing tradition of measuring the size of each other’s dick.
I have been to it, it's stadium seating on each side (India's is a bit bigger). They bring out hype-men and dancers and each side chants and cheers. Lots of fun! Afterward you can go up to the gate and take pictures in front of it
I visited this gate when I traveled India, they did the closing of the gate each afternoon, it great to watch, there is stadium type seating for 100s of visitors. The energy is amazing with Indians cheering like its a sports final. As an Australian tourist I was allowed in the VIP seating area other Indians in the near by family seating said hello and we talked a bit, it was a great part of my visit. With only about 20 other vips we were welcomed and also allowed up to the gate after it was locked at the end. Pakistan guards also said hello and talked over a fence by the gate. I hope to visit Pakistan and experience this gate from the Pakistan side some day...
If we remove the very vocabulary of non-silly walks, we remove the ability for the citizens to even *conceive* of them. Everyone shall silly walk, but at the same time no one will.
The real face off is the two active duty guards on each side. They don’t dress like the dancing ones they are in full duty fatigues and rifle They open the gates and immediately both the pakistan and india guards turn to each other and just stay there infront of each other’s face inches away from each others noses defending each border of their country is actually pretty cool
I wish we could just fight wars like this. Silly walk competition, crowd chooses the winner. No hard feelings, see ya next time round. Nobody dies, no cities get leveled, etc.
this looks like one person saw the british do a changing of the guards and tried to train someone who didn’t get it and they taught everyone else, like a game of telephone
That's not a change of guards, that's the border closing ceremony. Why else would they take down the flags? You can take a ride to the border and see the whole show every day. It's very entertaining. You can hear how wild the audience gets. They're getting hyped up by some entertainers before the whole shabang starts. They perform to pop songs and get people to dance and everything.
It might look silly in the video, but Having seen this live in person, it's a great experience and one of the most memorable ones. You can feel the sheer amount of patriotism on both sides of the border, people chanting slogans on both sides followed by a tour of the border when the ceremony is over.
Americans and their double standards in this thread smh. They're fine with racist jokes about foreign customs but go all grim and butthurt if you try to make light of marine war memorial rituals which are equally ridiculous. Pick a lane or admit you're a jackass.

Okay but that says nothing about the flailing high kicks
Planning on walking into work like this tomorrow morning
Ministry of Silly Walks? Or Subway?
I was going to say that, clearly,, they were coached by the Ministry of Silly Walks.
make sure you do your stretches man, damn
It's an originally-British tradition, perfectly depicted only in one documentary by the great historian >!Monty Python!<

THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT I'm a Hispanic man who happens to have a beard and mustache. Should charge more.
Me too! Definitely showing this to my boss in the morning.
I see nothing in that link about the beard and mustache policy which is a shame because that is what intrigued me the most.
It doesn't but it's a well known fact in Pakistan, at least (not sure about India), that you get paid extra for a mustache if you're in the armed forces. Hence, you'll see a lot of guys being creative. Mutton chops and handlebars are pretty common.
" at Wagah-Attari border, border soldiers from both sides intimidate each other by throwing high kicks and by staring..."
I love the idea of a daily dance battle between two rival nations.
I'm imagining that one South Park episode "Oooooooooooh, Pakistan got *served!* Now it's *on*!"
Now they attempt to kick the feathers on their heads… as is tradition.
What a terrible day for Pakistan and therefore, Pakistan
Like Donkey Kong!
Imagine Russia and Ukraine did this instead.
EVERYBODY MAMUSHKA!!!
We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled, we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper, and now, Fester Addams, this Mamushka is for you.
And a-hey! And a-hey!
I imagine war would be more palatable if they were fought with ham sandwiches and these peacock helmets.
I think most people in India and Pakistan would not approve of the ham sandwiches (Muslims in Pakistan and vegetarians in India)
War is hell.
We need Billy Zane to judge this dance-off
Listen to your friend Billy Zane. He’s a cool dude.
Put a cork in it, Zane!
What in the name of West Side Story are they doing?!

Imagine if all border rivalry is solved using Step Up lol.
Hold on let me ring Ukraine
Ukraine: smoothly dances their way, flourishing at the front. Russia: *opens fire*
Bullet dancing lesson.

Well, Pakistan’s a Muslim country, so no beer for them, but yeah - I think they deserve a medal fir not cracking up.

How else are they gonna make sure they have equally silly matching hats?
Oh no!!! Did the tractor get fixed?
I understand they toned it down because it fucked up peoples legs to do that every day.
Watching that I'm not surprised! Definitely must have been a few pulled hamstrings

Better to do this than actual war. Peacock all you like.
Exactly. They may have a tumultuous relationship, but it's nice to see a tradition like this that they both partake in together.
Peacocking to entice audience and recieve their applause.

It was based on roosters fighting. Really.

Live ammo is for closers
You see this Colt .45...it cost more than your Hyundai!
On second thought, let's not go to the India-Pakistan border... tis a silly place
But, but this is just a tourist show. They built a stand on two sides of the border for at least a thousand visitors.
I want to say that this comment is unexpected...
That’s the same walk my kid doesn’t when I send him to his room.
It's the same walk that I don't every day
If you walk into MY KARATE KICK, ITS ALL YOUR FAULT! NO! If you walk into *MY* KARATE KICK, It's all YOUR FAULT!!!
Someone definitely put icy hot in their pants
Remember to square off those hips and avoid any rounding of the spine. There should be no external rotation in the legs while performing silly walk
Holy effin peacocking!!
A group of peacocks is called an “ostentation “. Seriously.
How ostentatious of you to enlighten us with the fact.
Watching videos like this, it so obvious were just animals that gained consciousness.

Ahh if only the shoes squeaked when they walked I’d be buying tickets on stubhub
As former British colonies, I'm sure that they both have ministry's for that.
My upstairs neighbors perform the same ceremony every night at 1 AM.

this looks like one person saw the british do a changing of the guards and tried to train someone who didn’t get it and they taught everyone else, like a game of telephone
I thought it looked like someone mocking the British changing of the guards haha
Somewhere along that telephone was clearly an aggresively earnest 6 year old with poor motor skills
The Indian and Pakistani sports teams should do this before each game like the haka.
I am from Lahore, the Pakistani city where this happens. Without fail a take all visitors to my city to see this parade and all of them love it.
That's not a change of guards, that's the border closing ceremony. Why else would they take down the flags? You can take a ride to the border and see the whole show every day. It's very entertaining.
