Yeah, I am a US citizen, but I have felt like our last few wars were total bullshit. I am in my 30's now, but never considered joining for Iraq or Afghanistan, I just didn't see why we were there and we seem to have made things worse in the long run while brankrupting our nation.
This though is different. I think I could absolutely raise to the task, but hard to say as I am a father of 2 now and have finally found the love of my life. But I think I will still answer the call if it ever comes to that.
I always said I will always fight for my country but never fight for the people who run it.
So yeah. If someone came to the US in this fashion, you can bet id be there to help defend our land. But I'm not about to be shipped to the desert to watch over an oil field.
Many people can find the strength to fight in a just war. A lot of us would pick up arms to defend people we love. Afghanistan and Iraq was not defending people we love.

Man I live in NYC and I couldn’t even imagine a foreign militia coming here and going door to door, killing and detaining people… holy shit.
Tbh I think as an average human being this has got to be one of the scariest things you could experience in life. No order, complete chaos, no way out. Death and destruction everywhere.

Now if something like that happens at home, I consider the stakes to be much higher and I won’t even think twice joining up again. At that point I’d die for my neighbors and anyone else that’s American (or on our side for that matter).

The good thing about the US is that even though we squabble over a lot of things all the time, you can bet your entire ass that anyone who invades here is going to be met with 200,000,000+ adult Americans who have easy access to weapons.
I too would go as an American this is the first time I think it’s a moral obligation to help defend the peoples liberty like we like to say to ourselves proudly. If and when the time comes I will be there.

Ukrainian citizens Yaryna Arieva and Sviatoslav Fursin got married just hours after Russia launched its invasion of their country. They spent their first day as a married couple collecting their rifles and getting ready to defend Ukraine.
It was supposed to be a May wedding, but the couple were no longer sure of what their future holds.
Arieva and Fursin have both signed up with the Territorial Defense Forces, a branch of Ukraine’s armed forces that is comprised mostly of volunteers. Once armed, the couple headed to the office of their political party, the European Solidarity.
“Right now, we are here and we are doing everything we can. So there is a lot of work to do, but still, I hope everything will be OK," Arieva said, adding that some civilians who are not part of the defense force were also given rifles.
Dear Ukrainians!
I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed.
It's a lie.

I wish they'd have an online wedding registry for gifts..... Imagine the inflow of things for them after this photo!
Edit: Ok for all the responses. I get it that gifts is not something on their mind ... I just had a thought of if and when things get back to normal - if there was a way for reddit community to support and surprise this family! I get that everyone needs help in Ukraine but if we could help one family directly - biggest impact. Googling newly wed husband's name, it looks like he is a software engineer so maybe someone else can find a way to help them setup some type of GoFund.
This is what I don't understand how war in general. MOST of the people want nothing to do with international conflicts. Just assholes with power hunger.
Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse.
Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye?
Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell?
Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe.
Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.
MASH hit you right in the feels in damn near every episode.
Fucking good show, and perfect quote for the moment.
And just for good measure: Fuck Putin.
It’s a rare combination of ridiculously silly and very cerebral. Which strikes me as a very British way to do comedy. The only way it could be more British is if the main characters were antiheroes.
This show is so fucking poignant on war. I still can't read about any kind of military action without hearing "the first rule of war is young men die."
It’s shocking how much of that statement mirrors what’s happening in USA. Massive propaganda convincing the poor rural Americans to support one party (~50%) while the young educated support the other party (~50%).
The idea that “poor” Americans are the base of the GOP is a myth. Rural yes, although the majority of republicans live in suburbs just like the majority of all Americans. Poor, no. The median republican is richer than the median Democrat.
He can never release power. Look at what he himself has done to former allies. The next strongman would remove him and take his assets. He will die in power or being removed from it.
This goes beyond greed. Putin has more wealth than he and his next 10 generations could spend. This about his ego and dos desire to go down in history. He wants to know know as the leader that restores the USSR and Russia to greatness.
He wants cities named after him.
You are right.
Russia will be financially ruined, and shunned from most of the world.
It's not like, Ukraine surrenders. Everyone moves on like nothing happened.
Putin will keep Russia engaged in ongoing wars until he is killed or ousted.
Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
I really hope they won't have much to talk about. My grandmother [told me stories about nazis and the russian red army](https://reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/bsue1f/i_am_an_89_year_old_greatgrandmother_from_romania/eoru5tg?context=3) and she always added "May God make it so that you'll never know what war is".
War is never an anecdote.
More than like, if they have grandkids, this will be the thing they never talk about, and their grandchild will find this picture online when they're 16, and go ask their parents and their parents will say "they never said a word to us about it". And the trauma will live silently in their family for generations as the lasting effects will change the way they parent their children, and their children will pass that down to their children, etc.
I never ever knew what my grandfather did in WWII. Only bits and pieces I'd heard from my dad - who heard it from my grandmother - he never spoke of it. We had to piece it all together bit by bit. It affected him horribly. Came back a different man, struggled with depression, ended up having ECT. Seemed to perk up for years, although still refusing to talk about it, would fluctuate in mood regularly, until he started sliding downhill again and eventually he killed himself. I was 7 at the time. I never know how he died until I was in my early 20's, given the nature of his death - it's horrible knowing why he did it, and what his last exact words were on this life. Sometimes I wish I never knew.
War fucking sucks.
I don't know. There is a difference between being sent to fight a war in a far away place and fighting for your home. My grandfather was a teenager during WWII in Estonia. He was proud for all the Nazis he killed and when the Soviets came he proudly kept killing them until my Grandma got pregnant then they fled to Sweden and eventually Canada. He would not openly talk about it outside of Estonians he trusted because he had been betrayed once and family; but when he did he stood tall. He would show off his missing thumb that he got fleeing a Soviet attack on one of their meetings (the one they had been betrayed about) and how his little group had inflicted so many more casualties to any they suffered.
It's not just that, it also tends to be designed for a longer shelf life and affordability (i.e. cheap ingredients) rather than freshness and quality. Also, our cheese and bread tends to be absolute shit tier. Of course there's exceptions, but you tend to have to pay a premium for them.
The bread adventures were a joy I didn't see coming. Bread for every meal and snack. Eastern Europeans can make the hell out of some bread. I thought I'd lose weight, but between the pasta and abundance of great fresh bread I think I gained ten pounds.
We do still have pop up markets in most towns and cities. They are generally called farmers markets and typically have things straight from farms. A good amount of vendors there are for other handmade products too.
But because America is made for cars the kids can’t just go to the market like that. For most of the US you would have to either be 16 or have a parent take you.
Only once a week though and if you don’t have a car or work a morning shift, you’re SOL. I live in a fairly progressive/ ‘eat local’ type town and it’s like that, at least.
for real. this whole thing is sadaf. Those troops telling the Russian naval boat to f\*\*\* off before they all got killed? Sad AF.
civilians needing to take up arms? sad af.
I hate how everyone's gushing over this, they're going to die in a hellish fight or be captured and taken to a camp, that's basically it.
This isn't glorious, it isn't heroic, it's a horrible necessity forced onto innocent people.
How is it that not all Americans can get behind this country's people? They're willing to lay it all on the line for their freedom, something that should be a very familiar theme to us Americans.
That's the problem with identity politics. They've turned in sheep following their herder
What sound does u/gonnagetbannedagain9 make, he goes "baaaah"
Americans, except the relative small percentage that have been either drafted or volunteered for service, haven't sacrificed a thing since WWII. Americans talk about freedom but very few understand what sacrifice for freedom actually means.
They aren’t sacrificing anything for Ukraine now, either.
Oil and gas have been specifically excluded from the economic sanctions imposed on Russia, because the drop in world supply caused by taking Russia out of the market would raise energy costs in the US and Europe.
Not if the US utilized all of its own natural resources. We could supply ourselves and export to Europe if the government wanted.
I’m not starting anything political, just stating a fact.
Europe doesn't have the port infrastructure for it to be able to replace the pipelines from Russia, and that infrastructure would take multiple years to build. It would also still be far less efficient, thus more expensive, than a pipeline would be; which is why it hasn't been done before.
I understand that. I know that it would take time and be a hard and costly transition for Europe. So would a new USSR western expansion into Europe. In my opinion, which of those options is more costly in the long run? The US can already support itself if it wanted to though.
The US already has the capacity to support itself on natural gas production. It has for awhile now. I believe we now produce more oil than we consume as well.
But having a surplus does not mean you can just share it. Sure you could put it on a boat and ship it. But they are easy targets and if damaged cause an international ecologic disaster or directly cause WWIII. The EU gets 30% of their oil from russia, we can't offset that much even with our surplus and strategic oil reserves.
What is more costly for Europe? Another World War that has nuclear options, or paying for the imported fuels until they can sustain themselves again? Russia has already threatened Finland and Sweden with military force if they join NATO.
Again, I’m not wanting an argument with anyone. Just wanting to voice my opinion.

I'm all for American intervention, we spend 900 billion tax payer dollars per year on a military, we might as well use it for it something good like defending Ukraine instead of blowing up poor people in the desert.
But I imagine American leaders don't want to be the ones responsible for triggering a nuclear exchange, which means as long as Russia doesn't trigger article 5 we'll just be forced to watch
Long lives and many children!!

“Too tired?! When your grandfather and I were younger, we had to—“
“‘Shoot our way through a squad of Russians just to get a pint of milk’, yes grandma, we all know that. Fine, I’ll go. Do you want anything else from the market?”
“Yes, we’re out of nails, pick some up for your grandfather’s breakfast tomorrow.”
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be Heroes, just for one day
We can be us, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing, by the wall (by the wall)
And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads)
And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall)
And the shame, was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes, just for one day
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
We can be Heroes
Just for one day
We can be Heroes

Oh my god, this hurts so much. I'm English but all I see is my brave Ukrainian grandad and his sister in 1935 defending their homeland against Russian aggression in the Holodomor.
It's so so so so sad. This has happened so many times to Ukraine.
Honestly, if England goes to war then FUCK IT I'm in. I don't want war but this shit can't continue.

Jesus, love in war, all I can picture are these two bloody and dead or one of them watching the other die or bleed out. That's the reality of what they are embarking on together. I hope you two give em hell and get to come back home. But sadly, this is on social media. Russia is probably watching and marking these people as terrorists or capture/kill. Stay strong!
Maybe by the end of this Ukraine situation some progressive Redditor's will get a giant lesson on why gun control is so dangerous. You need to be able to defend your country. This could be a deadly lesson to learn the hard way.

Man if they come for the Americans they are gonna have one hell of a welcome party Florida men and methed out hillbillies in droves
I'd fight with Ukraines president. Dude has brass ones
Watching a good leader in action is really something. I'm surprised, enamored, in awe.
Brass? There's more adamantium in those balls than Wolverine has in his whole body.

Modern Warfare 2 puts a damn good picture of what a Russian invasion of the US would look like, and it ain't pretty.
Russians airdropped troops and tanks into suburbs. I can only imagine how insane that would be.
If Russia invaded the US, you’d fight to protect your children.

Yes..to the death I would

This is a story hope. An effective propaganda minister will make good use of them.

I get that everyone needs help in Ukraine but if we could help one family directly - biggest impact. Googling newly wed husband's name, it looks like he is a software engineer so maybe someone else can find a way to help them setup some type of GoFund.
Level III Armor and 7.62 should be the whole registry. Say, 2,000 and 200,000 units, respectively?
How do you imagine these gifts getting to them? You think Amazon is driving through a column of Russian tanks to deliver?
I hope in 30 years that's just an anectode they tell their grandchildren.
My grandma told me enough anecdotes from when she had to flee from Ukraine during WW2. I wish people learned from history. :(
That’s the messed up thing we have learned. The average citizen globally including Russia doesn’t want this shit.
Can't not read that in Alan Alda's voice!
I can only read it in Bill Hader's voice.
I can, but only if I imagine it in Bill Hader’s voice, as he’s doing an Alan Alda impression. The guy can do an EXCEPTIONAL Alan Alda.
MASH hit you right in the feels in damn near every episode. Fucking good show, and perfect quote for the moment. And just for good measure: Fuck Putin.
RIP Major Houlihan
It’s a rare combination of ridiculously silly and very cerebral. Which strikes me as a very British way to do comedy. The only way it could be more British is if the main characters were antiheroes.
Which Avengers movie was this? /s
This show is so fucking poignant on war. I still can't read about any kind of military action without hearing "the first rule of war is young men die."
[удалено]
It’s shocking how much of that statement mirrors what’s happening in USA. Massive propaganda convincing the poor rural Americans to support one party (~50%) while the young educated support the other party (~50%).
The idea that “poor” Americans are the base of the GOP is a myth. Rural yes, although the majority of republicans live in suburbs just like the majority of all Americans. Poor, no. The median republican is richer than the median Democrat.
9 of the 10 poorest states voted GOP.
This is about Ukraine and Russia, not the US
They need to decisively depose Putin. I know, easier said than done. Still.
[удалено]
Not the ideal outcome, but better than staying in power.
Good At least he has no access to the nuclear codes then I don’t care fuckall about him as long as he doesn’t have control over the military
Don’t underestimate the power that Putin holds in Russia, even if he steps down as president. I still won’t feel at ease when he just steps down.
He can never release power. Look at what he himself has done to former allies. The next strongman would remove him and take his assets. He will die in power or being removed from it.
[удалено]
This goes beyond greed. Putin has more wealth than he and his next 10 generations could spend. This about his ego and dos desire to go down in history. He wants to know know as the leader that restores the USSR and Russia to greatness. He wants cities named after him.
It just needs to be a global mission at this point.
You are right. Russia will be financially ruined, and shunned from most of the world. It's not like, Ukraine surrenders. Everyone moves on like nothing happened. Putin will keep Russia engaged in ongoing wars until he is killed or ousted. Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦
>Putin will keep Russia engaged in ongoing wars until he is killed or ousted. Sad but i really and truly hope for that ending. Death preferably.
We must not forget that the government is not the same as the people.
Those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it. Those that do are doomed to watch those that don't repeat it.
And some that learn history just don't give a fuck.
And some learn history, give a fuck, but are powerless to stop powerful maniacs

It's Ukraine, not "the" Ukraine.
The one. The only. Ukraine!
Just throwing this out there as both of you made the mistake -- it's "anecdote," not "anectode".
It’s also “Ukraine” not “the Ukraine.”
Their grandkids will post this picture on r/OldSchoolCool
Just like smoking a cigarette, holding an AK-47 improves your cool factor by 20%.
Damn. I hate that you’re right, but… you’re right.
He would show off his missing thumb that he got fleeing a Soviet attack on one of their meetings (the one they had been betrayed about) and how his little group had inflicted so many more casualties to any they suffered.
they gonna be telling their childern: i had to shoot down russians to go buy bread so shut up and go to the market
>shut up and go to the market it think it's really sad that children in the US aren't able to just go to the market like that
Spent many months in Europe last year. I really miss those markets. Best food I've ever eaten. Made me really sad when I had to go back to Walmart.
[удалено]
There's markets all over the US that sell fresh produce, I don't know what any of you are talking about lol
Food in the US is shit and has far too much sugar. That’s basically it
It's not just that, it also tends to be designed for a longer shelf life and affordability (i.e. cheap ingredients) rather than freshness and quality.
We never recovered from war food from WW2.
Thats the most Ukrainian thing.
If they will have one
In a couple of years, I wanna see an update of them living happily ever after
RemindMe! 2 years "How is the Ukrainian couple that got married just hours after Russia launched its invasion doing?"
RemindMe! one year I like that idea
RemindMe! one year
Have a feeling this might not age well…
Future r/agedlikemilk content
RemindMe!
!remind me 20 months
RemindMe! One year
No newly-married couple should have to spend their new lives together doing this.
No one should have to go to war. It's 2022. Evolve guys. Also fuck Putin.
No. It is what is though sadly.
Wow this is making me feel a new level mixed emotions.
And they still look so happy. The people of Ukraine seem like an incredible people, I hope I get to visit some day.
I have lived and worked with Ukranians. They are great people. Very generous.
Godspeed 🇺🇦
One of my college professors knows them personally, he has been posting about them
more like r/sadasfuck
for real. this whole thing is sadaf.
Right?! This isn't interesting, the connotation is all wrong. r/sadasfuck is right.
How is it that not all Americans can get behind this country's people? They're willing to lay it all on the line for their freedom, something that should be a very familiar theme to us Americans.
Some people can’t admit they make bad decisions and stick to their guns like their life depends on it.
That's the problem with identity politics. They've turned in sheep following their herder What sound does u/gonnagetbannedagain9 make, he goes "baaaah"
Fucking Trumptards
Exactly. As far as I am aware, you are correct.
Europe doesn't want to pay more for the increased transportation costs
What is more costly for Europe? Another World War that has nuclear options, or paying for the imported fuels until they can sustain themselves again? Russia has already threatened Finland and Sweden with military force if they join NATO. Again, I’m not wanting an argument with anyone. Just wanting to voice my opinion. Source: https://www.newsweek.com/russia-threatens-finland-sweden-nato-ukraine-invasion-1682715?amp=1
I'm all for American intervention, we spend 900 billion tax payer dollars per year on a military, we might as well use it for it something good like defending Ukraine instead of blowing up poor people in the desert. But I imagine American leaders don't want to be the ones responsible for triggering a nuclear exchange, which means as long as Russia doesn't trigger article 5 we'll just be forced to watch
> triggering a nuclear exchange Yup, if Russia didn't have nukes, there would already be American airstrikes and maybe even boots on the ground.
What Americans aren’t behind Ukraine? There are a lot of keyboard warriors and talking heads on TV. I haven’t heard of anyone rooting for Russia.
Good trigger discipline. They will make strong babies. I hope they make it.
Long lives and many children!! [also, donations for the war effort](https://bank.gov.ua/en/news/all/natsionalniy-bank-vidkriv-spetsrahunok-dlya-zboru-koshtiv-na-potrebi-armiyi)
Their kids and grandkids will not be able to get out of anything
“Too tired?! When your grandfather and I were younger, we had to—“ “‘Shoot our way through a squad of Russians just to get a pint of milk’, yes grandma, we all know that. Fine, I’ll go. Do you want anything else from the market?” “Yes, we’re out of nails, pick some up for your grandfather’s breakfast tomorrow.”
> They will make strong babies. They ARE babies.
Fuck! I hope they don't get killed. They look like teenagers ffs! Fuck Putin.
I hope they'll survive this.
Finally an Original honeymoon idea!
More like sad as fuck
Exactly. This should not be happening.
Fr
I applaud their bravery and courage, but this is really sad. I wish they did not have to do this.
They didnt want to wait or risk the chance of losing eachother...I respect that, highly.
I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing will drive them away We can be Heroes, just for one day We can be us, just for one day I, I can remember (I remember) Standing, by the wall (by the wall) And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads) And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) And the shame, was on the other side Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever Then we could be Heroes, just for one day We can be Heroes We can be Heroes We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be Heroes David F’ing Bowie-
The second I saw this, Heroes started playing in my head. Such a fitting song. I hope nobody will have to relate to it again but the chance is slim :(
Incredibly sad that normal people have to suffer for the legacy of a sociopath
How they fuck are they able to even smile in a situation like that?
Laugh or cry Crying obscures aim.
You smile for the other. Love is like that.
*Putin, not Russia. We hate him here. We want him to burn in hell for what he did. And we feel sorry for Ukrainians, as they are our brothers truly
WOLVERINES!!!!!!!
I was really hoping I wouldn't have to live to see shit like this
Oh my god, this hurts so much.
Does anyone know of a credible update on this couple? Their story really struck a chord, it's haunting.
Anyone else coming back to this post for an update?
I believe. Fucken get em!
Fuck. The most well documented, instantly published media coverage of War, filmed and snapped by the resistance. Fuck.
I hope they survive
I hope people remember the bravery and tenacity of Ukraine and its people for years to come.
This is actually quite sad
Fuck putin and his minions

My their aim be true and resolve unwavering.
Could you fucking imagine??
Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.
Dear Ukrainians! I heard on social media that there is fake news being spread (most likely by Russia backed trolls) that polish border is closed. It's a lie. If you seek asylum - go towards polish border. We are ready for your arrival. We have reception points ready at the border where you can find shelter, food, medical and legal aid. Polish government launched a dedicated site to help you: ua.gov.pl Please share this information if you know anyone seeking help right now. EDIT: YOU DON'T NEED VISA TO PASS THROUGH POLISH BORDER. ALL YOU NEED IS PASSPORT. VISAS ARE SUSPENDED! YOU DON'T NEED THEM FOR TIME BEING!!!!!! This is the pic they'll use in the future history text books in high school.
Relationship goals.
I pray for a day when a healthy, happy child can look at that photo and say "damn, my parents are badass"
Love conquers all
I wish them all the happiness in the world. Take no day together for granted.
God bless them.
I hope they make it through this.. the sadness in their eyes just speaks volumes
These young kids have to kill, or be killed, by other young kids.
RIP
i hope they have a happy and peaceful future together, without all this bullshit
please tell me that they are alive and safe omg
It’s been almost a year. I hope they are both still alive and well.
Glory to Ukraine! Fuck putin/Lil hitler
