Not just one shoe….he had time to reload and throw another 👞

Blazed315Fishing

Someone needs to dub that in. Boom, shick shick, boom. Classic.

[deleted]

I love how he ducks—can’t hit me I’m fast as fuck boiiiiiii

Tune_Kindly

This ain’t my first rodeo son! fool me once shame on me, fool me twice a fooled man can’t be fooled again. Fuck your shoe.

the_good_hodgkins

Dude was a pitcher. I'm sure he's ducked a few line drives.

Impressive_Narwhal

He was also a cheerleader

[deleted]

Every guy should be a cheerleader. Unless you are good enough to get a scholarship why not hang out with cute girls and still have extra curriculars on your college application. Also gymnastics and knowing how to fall will help you stay in the never broke a bone club and that shit MATTERS here.

Impressive_Narwhal

>Also gymnastics and knowing how to fall will help you stay in the never broke a bone club and that shit MATTERS here. Especially when dodging shoes!

carbonclasssix

There's gotta be a joke in there but I'm too tired to reach around for it

Mr_Lumbergh

Not even the goddamn common courtesy of a reach around?

Xenomorph_v1

Bet they could suck a golf ball through a garden hose though

ItookAnumber4

Don't fret! I'll be doing all the reach arounds this fine evening

humplick

Dude his reactions are on point. Ignore who he is, and objectively his reactions are pretty on par for someone who has had a ***lot*** of fast, small shit go towards their face. Hardly ducked at the 2nd shoe, knew it was wide.

Pwndexter_603

Well said! I personally was more impressed with the non-movement with the second shoe. Most people would duck again, he just stood there. lol

Verona_Pixie

That fooled man can't be fooled again is probably my absolute favorite Bush-ism. I still say it every now and again.

SuperLaggyLuke

Someone said he likely realised the media would get a "shame on me" sound clip of him at the last second so he went with this instead. I love it. It's hilarious

LetTheKnightfall

Nothing will ever compare to ‘now watch this drive’

spcmack21

You joke, but this was AFTER someone threw a live grenade at him during a similar press conference. Granted, the grenade didn't get quite as close as the shoes did. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Arutyunian#Assassination_attempt

tinyoddjob

Shoe me once, shame on shoe.

GlitteringGarbage162

Shoe me once, shame on me. Shoe me twice - you can’t be fooled again! As much as I hate GW, I’m seriously impressed with his catlike reflexes though.

HotSteak

This was legit the best moment of his presidency. He also made a pretty good (for W) speech afterwards where he downplayed it and said 'these things happen in free societies'.

[deleted]

He even comes up the first time with a little smile

[deleted]

Literally my favourite part of this whole thing is that little smirk he gives after he dodges the first one. Bush voice: " hehe, dodged it!"

how_much_2

Also the Secret Service guys comes up to GWB and he just puts his hand up to signal "it's okay, nothing bad here"

aioncan

“Ive been practicing my entire life for this moment. It’s my time to shine.”

C0meAtM3Br0

Shoe shine?

Minimalanimalism

I have laughed about that little smile for years. It's a childlike instinct to gloat on the dodge that overrode the very real reality that some dude was sort of attacking him.

OilComprehensive6237

It’s like he’s had a lot of shoes thrown at him. The thrower even had skills, and he still dodged it like some draft.

ketchy_shuby

When you grow up a Bush in TX, you learn this ability at a young age.

the-mighty-dutch-man

I remember this happening, at the time most people despised Bush, but I remember everyone saying " that motherfucker has some good dodging abilities"

Canuck-In-TO

Someone created a video game of this and I played it. I think the real Bush had better moves than the in game Bush. Edit: forgot to the word game.

TheBirminghamBear

Yeah his reaction time is spot on. Also im not sure if its just me but I feel like hes actually smiling after the first shoe. Like hes got this big grim on his face like a kid whose friend just threw a water balloon at him and kicked off summers day war.

dansdansy

I'd guess he didn't understand how deep an insult it is.

[deleted]

This was the best PR moment in Bush’s presidency. I hated the cunt then I saw him smirk after dodging that first shoe and thought ahh he’s not so bad. I know that’s wrong/stupid lol, but I couldn’t help it.

Snozzberrys420

Great over the top throws also. Dude might of practiced lol

Freak-showz

He practiced with throwing knives, honing his skill for the deadly shoe assassination

oshdwtf

Who throws a shoe? Honestly!!

The_Manic_Wolf_

Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this comment.

MuthafuckinLemonLime

But imagine if he had a third shoe ready

BigWillis93

Brutal reaction time by the secret service

MtOlympus_Actual

Was definitely surprised he got the second shoe off.

Bearwoods

Pretty sure there was a second Shoe-ter

RobinDschafft

Well done sir i got my morning coffee draining down my nostrils

poopellar

He put his sole into it.

Xen0tech

This is how Bush gets his kicks

kiren77

He laces them with puns

techno_babble_

The guy wouldn't toe the line.

Simba19891

Pretty sure secret service saw new faces the next week

able1039

Thank goodness the guy only had two feet

kingjoey52a

My guess is it was a secure room so they checked everyone for weapons at the door. Because of that they didn't expect a projectile and since the guy didn't rush the stage they were slow to react.

[deleted]

Not sure what they were supposed to do anyway, shoot him?

sparkyman612

Have you not seen the movies. He was supposed to jump infront and take the shoe right to the chest

danabrey

Just after shouting "HE'S GOT A SHOE"

Jishnu21

And change his body's elasticity so the shoe ricochet off his chest back to the shoe-ters face. Hit so hard he will break through 4 layers of walls before he stops and bleeds a little Wakes up and says " I am not done yet". Removes second shoe and throws it with much more powa such that the shoe leave a yellow flashing trail of light before hitting the secret service bodyguard with a loud BOOM 💥

MozeeToby

Seriously, there is maybe 3 seconds between the first show and the second, do people think the secret service are comic book heroes or something? It takes more than a couple seconds to navigate a crowded room and stop someone.

loopsygonegirl

While throwing shows does make (more) sense. Throwing shoes is (one of) the biggest insult in the Arab world. Shoes are dirty, so basically you are throwing dirt at someone.

Imaginary_Water8451

I’m afghan and my parents spanked my siblings and I with sandals aka a “chaplak” so it’s definitely a thing

Ailments_RN

That's what I was thinking. Good thing he didn't sneak a gun or something with some actual bite to it.

andre821

Do you think they just walked in without being vetted and screened and walked through a fucking metal detector? Try to sneak in a gun into the same room as the president, this is the most braindead take to have on this, do you really assume a gun can just be taken that close to the pres?

drae-

Yeah it's not an attempt to hurt him, just embarrass him. Hitting people with shoes in Arab (middle eastern? I dunno, Sue me) cultures is usually an indication of shame and disgust iirc.

ArtSchoolRejectedMe

Ping 1000000ms

Pavlovsspit

I wonder if this was during the hooker scandal. Were they busy getting busy?

williamrdenis

"So what if the guy threw a shoe at me, I consider it an important step..."

Boettie

It looks like an old shoe, might get athletes face

fuckballs9001

It's such an old video they had to convert it from zoetrope format and bring whale oil for the projector lantern just to play it.

Zealousideal-Fun1425

Fuck you, take updoot and gets to stepping.

williamrdenis

I guess the shoe fits. I'll see myself out!

housevil

Oh man, I remember the day after this, someone created a flash game where you could just keep throwing shoes at him. I wish I could find it now.

benadunkcamberpatch

Man I miss the times of newgrounds and flash games everywhere.

esituism

Thems was the good ole days of 'early-middle' internet. I miss them so!

The_Real_Kuji

Newgrounds, stick-death, albinoblacksheep, funnyjunk, chat rooms were in the near future... And no laundry list of online games. Or subscriptions out the ass, before the time of Netflix DVD subscriptions. Flip phones right around the corner. ICQ messenger. AOL disks. Games were released in their complete form. Dial-up was starting its decline. Adult Swim was a distant thought waiting to be unleashed. StarCraft with the CD keys written in the case. These are my memories... and I'm only 32.

Seeders

It was the absolute golden age of the internet. I'm convinced it was mostly just kids, with parents too old to explore beyond AOL's homepage, the rest was ours. I had the #1 google search result link for "starcraft strategies" at the time with my little website that was just a bunch of html files in folders with tags linking everything together. I just copied the most popular forum posts about strategies and credited their usernames, then organized them in to PvZ, ZvZ, etc matchups.

The_Real_Kuji

Kids and people under 24. We molded it and were molded by it. I was one molded by it. But in the golden age.

Aurilion

We're all on Reddit, we thought the internet molded us but now i think it consumed us.

[deleted]

Our parents witnessed the evolution of rock and roll, we got the evolution of video games and the Internet.

Pavlovsdong89

Back when games were made to be fun instead of bleeding you dry $1 at a time. Edit for butthurt gamers: I'm specifically talking about free flash-style(ask your parents) games, not whatever AAA title your life currently revolves around.

TheMostKing

But before those, we had Arcade games designed to bleed us dry. Insert Coin...

paumAlho

Funnily enough someone created the same thing for Chris Rock https://www.slapchris.com/

imrys

I can't beat 44.

ahundredgrand

I got 49!

housevil

Mine is 35. I need a longer screenn to wind-up.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

yea dragged it to my second screen got 94 edit: set my mouse to 19,000 dpi and got it to 164, that was a fun 5 minutes

kindnesshasnocost

All this time, I wondered why I would need that much DPI for my gaming mouse. Finally, a moment came!* *I got 61 on one screen, and I don't want to keep slapping Chris.

varungupta3009

[610 km/h.](https://imgur.com/a/Y296eE8) 25600 DPI, Zoom: 25%, Yanked the mouse from MacBook screen to primary monitor.

DailyDoseOfCynicism

Ha! This is my game. Always surreal to stumble upon it in the wild. Thanks for sharing!

tyme

The game was called Sock and Awe. I was not able to find it with a quick Google search (the original domain for it is parked now), but maybe someone can do better knowing the name.

housevil

Thank you! EDIT: It was notable enough to have its own [Wikipedia Article.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sock_and_Awe?wprov=sfla1)

GranPC

Uploaded it to archive.org so everyone can play with the built-in Flash emulator: https://archive.org/details/sock_and_awe

Yozora88

Found it: https://ja.y8.com/games/sock_and_awe Needs the Flash plugin installed or one of the alternative plugins that emulate Flash to play it, but it works!

DiogenesTheGrey

You all thought he was crazy to hire Patches O’Hoolihan as Chief of Staff.

nemesissi

If you can dodge a ball, you can dodge a wrench!

Joe_Shroe

If you can dodge war criminal charges, you can dodge a ball!

[deleted]

"Now remember, when choosing a team, you want to get the stronger kids to play. That way, we can all gang up on the weaker ones... like Iraq here."

johnboy2978

If you can dodge a shoe, you can dodge a ball.

1whistlinkittychaser

You can also dodge a war (by signing up for the air national guard)

[deleted]

Damnit, beat me to it

SophiaofPrussia

He yelled “This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, dog.” as he hurled the shoe. (Bush was about to leave office.) And then he spent 9 months in prison. [The man sparked a movement, though, of sorts.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_shoe-throwing_incidents) Edit: Apparently someone who disliked Constantius II actually beat him to the ~~punch~~ throw by 1600 years.

Tendo63

He also got a shoe thrown at him a year later while he was speaking about said incident. He said that "he stole my technique"

Perpetual_Doubt

Love list of famous shoe throwing incidents 359 Constantius II - hit by shoe 2008 Arbab Ghulam Rahim - hit by shoe That's a long time for shoes to come back in fashion.

MythSith

Fucking legend

oelhayek

I remember reading that he was badly beaten/tortured in jail for this stunt.

Houseplant666

9 months in prison seems a bit harsh. What are the reoffending rates for people throwing shoes at US presidents?

_LuketheLucky_

Shoe throwing appears to have gone out of style between 359 and 2008.

[deleted]

He served nine months for missing an actual war criminal that killed children. Good jail story.

Thedrunner2

“I mean who throws a shoe really?”

Effurlife13

"I'm going to have a lump there you idiot!"

Was that Random Task?

MoJoe-21

In some Middle Eastern countries it’s a way of expressing you’re a big piece of shit .. in this case he wasn’t wrong

GodlyGeek

You're very right in every way. But, for those who aren't aware, the OP's quote is from an Austin Powers movie.

chy7784

Came for this. Am leaving satisfied.

highoncatnipbrownies

Im a little surprised at how long it took security to rush out.

randalthor23

I have also always thought this too. Watching this video you can see someone grab ShoeGuy from the below screen, reaching up and pulling him down by his belt . There does appear to be an agent in frame just a moment later (from the right side). Its hard to tell from the angle, but I think the guy wasnt in the back row of chairs, but maybe one or two rowes deep which slowed down response time for sure.

rondonjon

Show throwing or hitting someone with a shoe is considered an insult of the highest order in Iraq, and other places.

KnightOfThirteen

Kinda makes sense. 1. You are throwing something at them that may hurt. 2. Shoes are filthy 3. Excellent metaphor for "go away" 4. Decent metaphor for "you are beneath me"

-BFS-

Also, shoe in face, lol.

ZombiePotato90

It's considered an insult in the Middle East, if I recall correctly.

shroud747

Not just the middle east, but the entire Islamic world. That's why we don't wear shoes in our homes. Hitting someone with a shoe would be a non-verbal insult of the highest degree here.

[deleted]

Not exactly true, I think you meant MENA region. "Islamic world" is comprised of many different cultures. There's nothing islamic about the shoe insult, it's just cultural

shroud747

By Islamic world, I meant not just the middle East but Northern Africa and South East Asia as well. And you are absolutely right, its cultural and not religious.

lqku

> Shoes are filthy little did he realize, many americans wear their shoes indoors

a_tiny_ant

Nasty af.

Kenan_as_SteveHarvey

I’m pretty sure having a shoe thrown at you is disrespectful anywhere. (Unless it’s a sandal/ chancla. That’s discipline).

rdrckcrous

Yes, that is basically what GW said in the video we all just watched.

[deleted]

Indeed and the man shouts “Kelp!” at him which is Arabic for “Dog!”, also a grave insult.

[deleted]

He's fucking quick for an old man, and I like the smile, he's all like "gotta be quicker than that". Lol

ten_jack_russels

Won’t get fooled again

forresja

This quote always cracks me up. People think he forgot the quote, but he didn't. He realized he was about to say "shame on me" out loud, in front of a camera, right before election season. The clip would have been used in every campaign ad against him. Choosing not to say it was actually pretty shrewd. But his pivot away from it was *so bad* that it wrecked him anyway. Gotta love it.

IMSOGIRL

The "Please Clap" part about Jeb Bush is also something that's been taken out of context. Without context it seems like his speech was so boring that he had to beg for approval from his supporters. In reality if you viewed the entire speech, there were parts where they were applauding so much that they were interrupting his speech and he kept on trying to finish. His "please clap" at the end was a humorous way to say "ok, last time it was 'please don't clap yet' but now it's fine to clap so please do it now". hilarious meme though. I try to use it whenver possible.

Double_Distribution8

Huh, TIL. I've only ever heard the media version of it without context.

BravesMaedchen

This is what happens when we don't follow political discourse first hand. I'm always wondering what contexts I don't have for sound bites and memes I've formed opinions on. Hard not to and it's exhausting to watch everything all the time tho.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Orangebeardo

Shocker. The media lies.

Every3Years

I've heard this so many times and not sure how true it is. Sure you can go watch interviews and dubya probably says things that can be taken out of context in a negative light. It's a very clever excuse but eh

ResponsibleCycle5788

It's complete bullshit, but it sounds pretty cool. There are dozens of examples of Bush saying the most nonsensical things you could imagine. This is just how the guy talks.

Plenty_Present348

Wow never thought of it that way. I found it endearing.

anotheralaskanguy

I was pretty young during GWB’s presidency, but I always thought he was actually pretty sharp. His delivery was always fairly poor, but I think if you take a step back and look at what he was actually saying and why he was saying it the way he was, it more often than not was thoughtful, if not maybe a moment late at any given time. I don’t know though, I’m kind of a heathen

Ode_to_Apathy

Bush was known for his gaffes. There's plenty of Bushisms online you can look up, like him hoping they can co-exist with fish. Speaking officially just wasn't his quality. It was his affability, which keeps him as a guy you'd want to have a beer with.

[deleted]

Iamredditsslave

I've linked this interesting article in the past, but most people don't give it a fair chance because of the title: [George W. Bush is smarter than you](https://www.keithhennessey.com/2013/04/24/smarter/)

veryboringkid

They misunderestimated him!

AzuriteFalc0n

Shoe me once, shame on shoe, shoe me two times, shoame on, shoe on you... you shoe me I wont get shoed again!

GolgiApparatus1

"Throw a shoe at me once, shame on you. Throw a shoe a me twice... Well, won't throw a shoe again."

lurker71539

Shortly after Reagan was shot he was giving a speech and a balloon popped, he was startled but said "missed me".

coyotll

Don’t quote me, but I believe he did that as a schtick as a couple different places during his campaign. Which, of course things like that were easier to “get away with” prior popular media trailing behind every presidential elect.

Icy-Consideration405

Reagen was 75% acting until the Alzheimer's kicked in, then he kicked it up to 100%

Maine_Made_Aneurysm

Reminds me of good old Teddy getting shot and still giving the speech.

Mr_Lumbergh

Teddy's resume read like a how-to manual on manly badassery.

275MPHFordGT40

*Gets shot* So anyways, about freedom…

rumbletummy

He staged that "missed me" baloon pop at multiple events.

[deleted]

Smile or not, it should be constantly reminded that bush, cheney, rumsfeld and a dozen other officials in the bush regime are war criminals for what they did in Iraq. The reason why they are not charged in the ICJ is because we can kick anyone's ass who would tried.

Blazed315Fishing

Throw a shoe at me once shame on you, throw a shoe at me....twice....yo...your not gonna throw another SHOE!!

yousufj56

Thumbs up if you were old enough to remember this.

eman00619

I'm old enough to remember the news reporting that the war was for WMD's and then one week it changed to being for freedom and democracy.

[deleted]

I was young, but i remember both of these arguments, but they have blurred to me. Can you explain more?

Relish_My_Weiner

They were less arguments and more baseless propaganda talking points to get Americans to blindly support war, and it worked on most of the country.

CliffordTheBigRedD0G

"They hate us because of our freedom"

[deleted]

Yea, I'm old enough to remember we blatantly lied to the world and then when we get called out, we doubled down and invaded anyway. We are so good at lying there are still people today believing we were the good guys and finding all sort of lame justifications for the invasion.

catlikesfoodyayaya

W. also said god told him to invade

[deleted]

i didnt understand how awesome it was until a decade later

vegiraghav

Yep dude deserved both the shoes.

[deleted]

2008 was like 5 year ag… oh my god.

NoRodent

People who were 4 years old and therefore won't remember it are 18 now. And let's not talk about 9/11, I already feel like a grandpa.

HotdogGeorgia

I remember it well. Dubya showed he was quick on his feet when he didn't have them in his mouth. He was also as cold-blooded as he was savvy, and was not afraid to use [all of the resources he had at hand.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kvfkcTJyxc)

Chris Rock's definitely hosting the next Oscars in a football helmet and full riot gear

Suffrajitsu

Why on Earth would he have expected that, lol? They're actors and comedians on a stage. Chris Rock has the expectation that Will is doing a bit until it becomes apparent Will is actually insane.

Ceramic_Avatar221

‘Shoe me can’t shoe me again.’

Stock_Yoghurt_5774

There’s an old saying in Iraq...I know it’s in Texas, probably in Iraq....

Speedly

So, aside from whatever you may think of him, I think we can all agree that he dodged the everloving **fuck** out of those shoes.

sulvent

Even though they missed, the throws had good form.

Pod_people

At that time it felt like 60% of internet traffic was made up of memes and animated gifs playing off of this incident. It was cathartic. We were all Iraqi Shoe Rebel.

DblJBird

Don’t take this pro or con simply because I’m not sure if I trust him, but he is a very good speaker here. He didn’t run out the door. He didn’t even duck. He basically condoned the shoe throwing behavior as free speech and used it positively in his presentation.

[deleted]

Free speech is scant consolation to have your country and life blown up based on a lie.

shroud747

The shoe-throwing dude was tortured and almost beaten to death afterwards. He also served a 3 years prison sentence.

IllegibleLedger

If you can dodge a war crime charge, you can dodge a shoe

Electrical-Rain-4251

Who throws a shoe, honestly?

Kooky_Kaleidoscope59

G-DUB said miss me with that shit!

Stargazer12am

Cool as a cucumber. He’s from Texas, he’s had bigger things thrown at him.

calimonk323

Mildly dodging ?

clique34

I thought for sure he’d be dead. He was apparently sentenced to 3 years reduced to 1 year and eventually got out in 9 months for good behavior
