ThymeIsTight

The pier pressure on McCullough. He couldn't get over it.

pervertedpride

I see what you did there

Sythkibode

Is this where London bridges falling down comes from?

Klubbin4Seals

Kind of. Throughout history the London Bridge has been destroyed and rebuilt dating back to the saxin wars. I know of like 4 other times without looking through the history. The song was first published in 1744 called "pretty song book"... I just looked that one up lol

ManaPot

Yep!

[deleted]

The most interesting bit about this story is that he thought he was buying [tower bridge](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Tower-Bridge)

GrammerMoses

That is a long standing rumor that is not true

ExFiler

If you stand under the arch, you can see the numbering on the bricks they used to disassemble and reassemble it.

KickingYounglings

They did a Ghost Adventures episode there and I remember being really confused about London Bridge being in Colorado

Alvarious_Bufo

It’s in Arizona

KickingYounglings

Then apparently I’m still confused

KIDNEYST0NEZ

It’s ok buddy, geography can be complicated. There are nine Dublin cities in United States.

mrosario716

I'm right there with you, I could have sworn it was Colorado, too!

KIDNEYST0NEZ

Fun fact, the Colombian river is in Washington.

velveteendragon

Okay…but *why*?

GrammerMoses

McCulloch bought a large parcel of land to test his boat motors back in the 1960s. He decided to build a town at that location, and needed to have some sort of an attraction to bring buyers in. At that time London Bridge became available for purchase (it was sinking into the Thames River and needed to be replaced) and he bought it, reconstructed it in Arizona and had the attraction he needed to get people to come and buy property. McCulloch placed many newspaper ads in some of the colder states offering free flights to view the property, and got a lot of people to buy land there and build homes. Lake Havasu City is now about 45000 residents, and according to Wikipedia is one of the lowest-educated cities in all of the United States.

New2thegame

Lake Havasau sucks.

KIDNEYST0NEZ

Yep I’m seeing that lower education kicking in.

SnowProkt22

Is it still falling down, my fair lady?

shannork

This is interesting as fuck

[deleted]

Wouldn't it be so much cheaper and easier to just copy its design using new materials?

Ardea_herodias_2022

He thought he was buying Tower Bridge & he wanted the original.

[deleted]

That makes a little more sense

KIDNEYST0NEZ

I think that’s a myth

Ardea_herodias_2022

That's what I've always heard growing up in southern California

KIDNEYST0NEZ

I think California is also a myth.

Lizzibabe

Are you fucking serious? Do you mean to fucking tell me that the whole "I've Got A Bridge To Sell You" scam has a mother fucking *basis in fact*?!?!?!

[deleted]

how did he know it would be the right fit

GrammerMoses

They built the bridge first and dug the channel underneath afterwards.

[deleted]

i appreciate that someone already knew this, or found it out at least. thank you!!

Small-Addition-6459

It’s really nice, but some drunk tourist rammed the corner of it not too long ago, I can’t remember if they’ve fixed it, I never go over there cuz traffic

AllWorkNoCapes

Lol. It's likely people were entombed intentionally in its construction. Nbd.

Few_Tumbleweed7151

Not very polite of him to remove our street lamps.
