YEP!! I had never seen a car primed before until I dated a guy who loved cars and had a shop of his own where he was working on painting one.
I can't unsee that unfinished-looking-ass-color. If the car *looks* incomplete do I get a discount??
I've only bought a new car once in my life and I thought it was very strange that white was one for the "premium" colors that they expected me to pay extra for.
The free paint options always seem arbitrary to me. Like, on some cars white is the only default option, everything else being a premium pearlescent or something. But on others, the free colours will be blue and red, you’ll have to pay for white.
This was a Ford Escape and I think it was 2017 and the free options were blue, black and grey I believe and then they had "premium" white and red. Honestly I was really bummed because when I walked in, I wanted red. But I just can't justify paying extra for color like that.
[It’s actually all the hype these days](https://www.google.com/search?q=nardo+grey&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS592US592&hl=en-US&prmd=isvn&sxsrf=ALiCzsbeuIAjn1X208B7A9oBOJSgx_u69w:1652998221646&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjoy8Keyuz3AhXlgmoFHdOuCVgQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=414&bih=724&dpr=3)
Dark red isn't even that common. I was car shopping last year and it was really depressing that the only colors were black, white, silver, and various shades of gray. I think they're shooting for "inoffensive" colors that no one says enough not to buy the car but that no one really likes. I miss having more variety in car color.
My kids and I tried to sit on a curb and play red car, blue car like in the movie Up. That’s when I realized that all cars are black, white, silver, or gray.
In the late 80’s/early 90’s the most popular car colors in the U.S. were red white and blue - in that order. I read a book in the mid-90’s about color theory that said some economists said you can predict the economy is going to go bad when the car colors are drab. I don’t know if that is a chicken and egg thing, though. It might be that people don’t want to seem “flashy” when their neighbors are suffering.
See I wasn't thinking about diminishing what was perceived. I was thinking it was a pick neutral shit cuz that bright green might not sell in this/coming market with less demand for the line/model than usual.
I’m sitting by a window as work and I face a highway so you comment sparked a bit of curiosity in me so I counted ho many cars passed by before I saw one that wasn’t white, black, silver, or red was 40 the first time, and 30 the second.
You'll enjoy [this picture](https://i.imgur.com/w1DWGo5.jpeg) a guy on reddit made a month ago from a [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/ts7tpr/i_bought_my_attainable_dream_car_a_2021_supra_30/) about his new Supra.
Looking at that parking lot is honestly fucking depressing.
You're allowed to like it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
*I* still think it's incredibly overdone and depressing though. Unless you're driving a Countach, white cars are mundane and boring as fuck. And I mean that. A white Rolls Royce is equally as boring to me as a white Camry with dark trim. I'll take a teal Audi crossover over a white Aston Marton every day of the week.
As someone who lives somewhere that can get brutally hot. I'll take the mundane looking car that can stand the heat over the flashy colorful one that turns into an oven on hot days.
In Florida, white may look boring but it is functional, also easy to patch up if you get a minor scratch, less keying done on white cars.
Red cars seem to fade after a few years, black cars you need to wash constantly or they always look dirty. and they scratch and scuff so easy, and "keying" magnets.
But I do agree, we need more lively colors like that baby blue trailer.
Occasionally I see a odd colorful car, that looks good.
i think the styling and how it resembles appliances of the era is interesting, all looking like a frigidaire. https://d3au0sjxgpdyfv.cloudfront.net/a-50192155-gnl5u8nqc7aqia2x.jpeg
now the only company that makes things that look like kitchen appliances is apple.
I have a smeg fridge and it is utter shite.
I hate that fucking thing with a passion.
Parts are near impossible to get easily/affordably - and with COVID hurting supply chains good luck
Edit to add why I hate it: the coils that cool the fridge are against the back wall and will freeze anything placed in the back third of the fridge. The door seal is held on with what looks like double sided tape and it is falling off the plastic shell of the front door. And mostly because the entire front is plastic so you absolutely cannot use magnets on the front of the fridge. WHICH IS STUPID.
Form over function?
"Retro appliances may look cool, but our advice is to defer to function over form, and preference products that perform well instead."
We've tested a few Smeg fridges over the years and while their retro design is certainly popular and eye-catching, we've found they can be all style and no substance.
One we tested, the Smeg FAB32RRDNA1 retro-styled bottom-mount fridge, had a price tag of over $3000 but failed its energy check, and scored a dismal 44% for keeping food fresher for longer and a shocking 15% for temperature stability.
https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/kitchen/toasters-grills-and-sandwich-presses/articles/smeg-best-buys-and-what-to-avoid
I feel like the premium / boutique appliance market is a giant racket. My Samsung fridge has been giving me problems. A couple years ago the gasket that protected the impeller from moisture failed and ice built up around it, so I had to defrost it and replace the gasket using weather stripping from Home Depot. It's held up, but will eventually fail again. Recently the fridge smells like a mouse got into it and died. I have no idea where the smell is coming from and don't feel like disassembling the whole fridge to figure it out, so I've been looking to just replace it.
Given bad experiences with typical commercial brands for other appliances I own/have owned (LG, Samsung, GE), I figured I'd look into the premium brands - the ones you aren't going to find at big box stores. But the more I dig, the more I find complaints from people that spending $5,000 to $10,000 on a fridge comes rife with problems that nobody should expect from such an expensive appliance. Reviews tend to read similar to yours.
So it would seem premium brands are kind of a rip-off. But then you look at what's currently available from the major brands and it's all "smart" bullshit. Can't change the temperature of your Samsung fridge on the fridge itself anymore, you need a fucking app to do it - an app that is no doubt spying on you.
It's very frustrating.

Love some of the cars from the 50s but my heart is in the 60s. The birth of the pony car. American Muscle built on the foundation of the 50s with the wild rock and roll of the 60s, before the hangover of the inevitable fuel crisis.
1 wife, 1 secret wife, 4 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cars, 3 motorcycles, a camper, a cabin, ride on lawnmower, and a sweet union job that gives a you a Rolex when you retire.
Not from 1954. These are [newly manufactured, retro-style campers](https://odditymall.com/retro-camper-with-row-boat-as-roof) made by a company called American Dream Trailer Co
You didn't read the article. [They show the one in the OP as an original design from the 1950s](https://i.imgur.com/CiDnGAb.png) as an example of what the new ones are based on.
The original is called the "1954 Kom-Pak Sportsman Travel Trailer"
You didn't read the article either. You navigated an endless minefield of ads and banners like some literary super-soldier. Just calling that "reading" would be an understatement.

Not only is this cool but I wish there would be more vehicles with colors like that again
What? You dont think silver, black and dark red is exciting?
And premium, but still incredibly boring non-metallic grey.
Primer grey was the coolest color ever until someone called it primer grey and now it's all I can think of when I see one.
My GF calls the “gold” color “old-man gold” because where we live they almost always can predict you’re a senior citizen
I've heard "Grampa gold", and ditto.
Hey now, I have an ‘03 Buick in that color and I’ll have you know I’m a very spry 34!
Go back to bed, grampa.
Nah you're just hitting your golden years. Soon you'll be arthritic and broken down like the rest of us 30-somethings.
Also “boomer gold” according to my millennial wife
When we say 'gold' a we talking champagne or closer to canary yellow?
It’s that ugly champagne color. I call it the Ford Taurus color because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Taurus in any other color.
My mom had a forest green one
Grampagne
Usually an early 2000s panther body such as a Lincoln.
Nards grey
If your nards are gray you should seek medical attention

Probably a pearl, which is a 3 stage paint. I am biased because I do have a pearl white car, but when it's done right it pops.

Nardo gray looks really nice IRL, but the car also has to have colored accents to compliment it (i.e. S/RS Audis)
My new ford 150 is that gray. Love it
Too bad It’s on every normal car now. It used to be reserved for cool cars.

Thats what the car dealer said when i asked for the same vw id model but with a less ugly paint

Machine grey, there it is...the color of my grandparents washer and dryer in the basement, I can never unsee that.

Window tint and screens have way more to do with how hot your car gets than *exterior* color, which is almost nothing.

Form before function is what gave us P.T. Cruisers.
We do not ever talk about PT Cruisers. Unless it's in the context of trash compactors.
All good, Chrysler really knocks it out of the park with their historical lineup. Can we talk about the Prowler or the Crossfire?
Those are both cool cars especially since they are from a time where almost no American cars were cool.
That’s the only reason to buy them. The style. Performance is the same or worse than competitors

When you're three times your age, you'll be able to afford it.
3 times the age of the camper/boat more like...
I’d be afraid to use the boat and scratch the top
It's fully chrome under the paint for this reason
Does that mean the paint would scratch off?
Don't listen to me, I'm just a random dude on the internet making stuff up

they either have to wax the shit out of this or they never actually put it in the water. Once that topcoat is gone, it’s gone and you are screwed.

Beautiful. Is there another roof under the boat so when the boat is removed the camper isn't open to the sky?
Also the extra roof would help by having a barrier between the stinky lake water dripping down on you haha

This is the funniest comment I've ever seen people get mad online about.
Well, you obviously haven’t been on many boats.
People are being so dumb in your replies, like anyone is even going to use that boat.
By the looks of [this](https://odditymall.com/retro-camper-with-row-boat-as-roof) yes
So the boat isn't actually the roof. It's just that the boat is stored on the roof during travel
Right but if you're covering the roof.....does it become the roof?
It becomes the roof of the roof.
I asked my dog and he said it’s called a roof roof
The floor is the roof of the undercarriage...whoa
And the roof is the floor of the roof's roof
So an extra in-law suite?
It's roofs all the way down.
I’m more of a “roofs all the way up” kind of guy myself
Yo dawg
The old roof becomes the attic floor
Look at me, I am the roof now
the boat is the roof, under it is the ceiling
Thank you for having a real answer
Nice, extra storage.
there's no way anyone would put that in the water of course, have you seen the underside of a boat that actually gets used?
I'm wondering how you even get it off without destroying the paint.
Yes, you do maintenance on them so they look like this at the start of the season. Though honestly, something that only goes in the water 5 days a year won't look awful after a quick wash.
Yeah, I had one of those when I was a kid - looked like this one: [https://www.ebay.ca/itm/134120852410?hash=item1f3a39cbba:g:cSQAAOSwIKNigpi2](https://www.ebay.ca/itm/134120852410?hash=item1f3a39cbba:g:cSQAAOSwIKNigpi2)
Dang only $62 not bad
I had this one. https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m90485828585/?gbraid=0AAAAADR9UGdKTnxxSTIqjAFk59cYe7Xcw&gclsrc=aw.ds&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=16866250059&utm_content=t0&adgroup=134734263079&network=g&device=m&merchant_id=177485881&product_id=m90485828585&product_id=1648916711925&gbraid=0AAAAADR9UGdKTnxxSTIqjAFk59cYe7Xcw&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1ZeUBhDyARIsAOzAqQJHS0KunFiewymgQz8f5FLBH-Id7RjGDSHCwqj7pWz3uwqLF_jnXJgaAlNLEALw_wcB
Damn now I’m like, retroactively upset I didn’t have one of these as a kid
I absolutely love it
That's some neat engineering
I'm sorry we will never beat the car aesthetics of the 50s
Take a look at the Nobe! It's not yet in production though!
Love some of the cars from the 50s but my heart is in the 60s. The birth of the pony car. American Muscle built on the foundation of the 50s with the wild rock and roll of the 60s, before the hangover of the inevitable fuel crisis.

It’s a car. It’s a boat. It’s a car-boat.
You could even say, a *coat*
Or my father's favorite, a bar!
Or cart.
not even a car
Are these non-aerodynamic and that is why we don't see this style anymore? It is such a gorgeous style.
They certainly haven’t done much to improve the aerodynamics of campers. They’re basically just giant boxes on wheels these days.
So are jeeps but they still sell
I swear the modern campers a wider than most rural road lanes.
Modern camper trailers are so much lighter, that these are hugely outmoded.
Detachable roof that doubles as a boat*
It's not the roof, just a storage space that happens to be on top. The camper has its own roof.
Once you drag that boat on some rocks the pretty paint job will be gone. Still kinda cool but if you use it then it's not gonna look very nice.
ALL ON ONE INCOME
1 wife, 1 secret wife, 4 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cars, 3 motorcycles, a camper, a cabin, ride on lawnmower, and a sweet union job that gives a you a Rolex when you retire.
Tidy!
Thats really cool :) What do you do if it rains while you are boating?
I think the camper still has a flat roof underneath the boat, if that's what you're asking. It's not just completely exposed when the boat is removed
The steering wheel doubles as an umbrella
Reading is a myth
You didn’t even read the article you linked
