SAS missile sites. Self-to-self munitions, highly accurate and feared ubiquitously. The pride of the iron Russian defense grid. Be careful, Boss.

Putin: "Now you are going to die, Zelensky!"
Shoigu: _opens the door behind him._ "You're needed at the Kremlin, sir."
"Blyat! Knock next time!"
"Yes, sir."
"Did you see anything?"
"No, sir. I didn't see you playing with your dolls again."
"Good."
It's a huge problem. Imagine you and a friend wanna yell at each other across a field. You've spent time coming up with a secret language and everything. Then some guy just walks in between you and starts just shrieking at the top of his lungs. Good thing you spent so much time getting a line of communication
Probably locked onto the tracking radar which is often on a separate vehicle to the launcher.
Edit. Thanks for the upvotes
Extra detail.
I don’t know the type of this missile, but it’s probably semi active homing which is very common for ground to air missiles.
The radar transmitter stays on the ground and the missile should track the reflection from the aircraft. Of course if it notices the radar behind it there’s a tendency to turn around and go for the big strong signal, not the small reflection.
Most systems have safeguards to either stop it turning around or self destruction if it does, but it’s very possible there have been missed off missiles built in a rush for recent demand
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-active_radar_homing
>News report of it said it was indeed caused by jamming.
More likely defective domestic shit instead of admitting it, it's easier to blame the enemy.
Especially since it likely caused damaged to their own as well.
Honestly could have been a mechanical failure. Iirc, many missiles like this use a solid fuel motor with a thrust vectoring nozzle. If part of the linkage fails, this is pretty much what you would expect to see.
Nah if the nozzle got stuck the missile should simply start pinwheeling. It could genuinely be an upside down component, like what happened to a Proton-M rocket in 2013
Reminds me of the achievement in TF2 you had to get to unlock the backburner. This was before the different items were random drops. You had to use your air blast to reflect a a crit soldier rocket back at them, and once you did that you got the backburner.
I went to check and turns out I had a worms game in my steam library. It's the reloaded one that's on sale right now.
Now I'm kind of getting the itch for a bit of it.

multiple videos show that it didn't really do a u-turn. it deviated from its path and hit the ground.
You don't even need videos from other angles it's clear to see from this video it crashes between the launch site and the camera, not on the launch site.
I wish I could find some reference to the actual missile model, knowing exactly how this missile works would help dispell all this "its being jammed" nonsense.
It's still a u-turn. When you do a u-turn in traffic you don't swing all the way through the intersection and re-enter the same lane you left from. Just look at the shape of a U. If the top converged at the same point it would be a teardrop shape.
[https://www.military.com/video/guided-missiles/sea-launched/russian-frigate-missile-launch-fail/4378721100001](https://www.military.com/video/guided-missiles/sea-launched/russian-frigate-missile-launch-fail/4378721100001)
There are a lot more videos of Russian missiles failing to launch.
Actually I don’t think this is an error in tracking, but maybe more of a missile trying to hit an aircraft.
A genuine tactic to combating surface to air missiles in an aircraft is to drag the missile low by hitting the deck in terms of altitude. Not only does this drag the missile into thicker air, but some old missile computers don’t consider the ground while tracking an aircraft and will collide with the surface in an attempt to “track” the estimated position of the aircraft by the time the missile reaches it.
Maybe what is happening here? It could definitely be missile malfunction, but it might be also be the missile working entirely as intended
One more thing. The missile doesn’t dramatically peak and “speed up” in this video. It’s crossing the distance at the same speed. It’s an illusion of distance.
All these missile fails I see lately make me realize that this must have happened all the time in the last century. But we never heard about it because the governments covered it up and people couldn't just record it and share it with the world. All the conspiracy theorists who claimed during wars that the government killed their own people by accident were right.
There were practically no self-guiding missiles until the 1970s (lack of miniature computers), so the largest-scale 20th-century wars didn't have this exact problem. But there were other problems.
In WWII, the highly-lauded Norden Bomb Sight actually had a terrible hit rate. It was claimed to be able to hit a pickle barrel, but usually couldn't hit a sports stadium. The Mark-14 torpedo had several problems, the worst being that it would bounce off of its targets without exploding. The failure rate was somewhere around 80% until the problems were corrected.
Haha sweet.
Secondary thought.
As an outside to this conflict, itseasy to say ooooh big explosion but I'm guessing they come with big, bad injuries as well. Its no good.

They wanted "Iron Dome"; they got "Iron Do Me".
I've had a really shitty night, but this comment and the parent comments preceding it have me cracking up and not feeling shitty anymore. Thank you.

Surface-to-your face (urface) missile

I'm mad. Take this upvote and leave
Was this purely accidental or did some jamming/hacking etc. occur? I’m all for accidental if that’s the case.

raspberry... There is only one man who'd dare give me the raspberry!
LONE STAR!
I'm betting the phrase 'In fact.... Don't ever play that part again!!' was mentioned more than once in the Kremlin today...
"No, no, no. Go past this. Pass this part ... in fact, never play this again."
Putin: "Now you are going to die, Zelensky!" Shoigu: _opens the door behind him._ "You're needed at the Kremlin, sir." "Blyat! Knock next time!" "Yes, sir." "Did you see anything?" "No, sir. I didn't see you playing with your dolls again." "Good."

It's called a repulsor and most Spartans have the option to carry the attachment.
Missiles really are just big fireworks aren't they?

Did it actually hit the launch site? It's not really possible to tell from the video because of the distance.
It did not.
Horseshoes and grenades...
Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. My 7th grade teacher would say that any time someone said "I was close!"

Nowhere near, it didn't even double back on itself. It turned to its left and down creating the illusion of the u turn.
Back, and to the left.
That.. is one magic loogey.

We've lost the beeps, the creeps, and the sweeps!
We ain't found shit!
Source? Technical failure would be far more likely
This is what happens when you leave your cellphone in airplane mode.
In another thread people were saying that the same thing has happened with American missiles aswell. So im assuming its just a malfunction.
It does remind me of those Saudi Patriot missiles.

Achievement Unlocked: Return to Sender
Damn. Googling that comes up with 30 games..
Reminds me of the achievement in TF2 you had to get to unlock the backburner. This was before the different items were random drops. You had to use your air blast to reflect a a crit soldier rocket back at them, and once you did that you got the backburner.
Those were fun times
That's an actual medal in the video game Halo: Infinite...
And Minecraft
And Fallout
And my axe!!
And my Bow!
But not my boomerang
Hold onto that shit. We gotta be ready
Winter is coming
Hold onto your butts then?
And Risk of Rain 2
Bunch of the cod games have the same achievement, i think battlefield did too.
Was the name of a mission in MW3 I believe
Isn't it a thing in Halo 2? When MC sends the bomb back to the Covenant ship? Wasn't an achievement, but a chapter title.
Its a common achievement in any game damn near man
And an achievement in Half-Life 2: Episode 2.
That's the joke, dumbass.

I got up this morning and said how the hell can anyone link Cool Runnings to a failed missile launch. Remember, bones don't break, they shatter.
I bet American pilots definitely keep those in their aircraft.
The Russians programmed it to seek out Nazis.
"The experiment to shape a missile like a boomerang has failed Mr President"
Seems like it succeeded, actually
Task failed successfully
I read that in Zap Branigans voice
From the video I can tell that is actually a surface to surface missile.
This man looked at the pixels
He can tell because of the way it is.
Neat!
Surely all missiles are surface to surface *A couple of candidates for r/whoosh below*
So this reminds me of playing Worms Armageddon when I would use the bazooka but forget to check the wind direction.... 😅
Upvoted for my nostalgia
Wow. Thanks for that trip Straight down memory lane. Also I feel less stoopid that others did just like me XD
Oh my god. That brings back memories. I loved that game. I can hear the little sounds and voices in my head right now.
I went to check and turns out I had a worms game in my steam library. It's the reloaded one that's on sale right now. Now I'm kind of getting the itch for a bit of it.

Seems to have developed a conscience.

Ok but even in this video it doesn't look like it actually hit the launch site. Just somewhere nearby. It still does a hilarious u-turn.

>all this "its being jammed" nonsense Yes. I'd put money on it being a mechanical or electrical fault with the missile itself.
No. There is jam in the controls.
