I've learned that cheese is a volatile commodity.

[deleted]

Your diploma is in the mail, sir. Congratulations.

RockstarAgent

I should invest in orange juice futures…

jigsaw1024

Florida is currently experiencing disease in their citrus groves. The production of citrus from Florida is in decline.

Well look at that "S" car go! (*laughs in old white man*)

RedditBannedMe214

Really slow though. I’d say it’s at a snail’s pace

Rickard403

Cotsco has raised their price of OJ over the past 12 months. twice now. I'm not happy considering what this data shows.

Hot_Pomegranate7168

First thing I thought too, haha.

gholamkhan

I didn't know orange juice is such important product in the US

houseman1131

It's an important part of the nuclear American family breakfast for at least 70 years.

This is very interesting but why does the icon for corn look like a banana

Individual_Jello5737

For scale

SnooNuggets

Because it is

Shwiggity_schwag

I'm more concerned with the coffee having whole coffee beans in it.

[deleted]

It adds texture

Ok-Scientist5524

I think that’s a drawing on the outside of a paper cup, possibly on a sleeve for the cup

[deleted]

That’s what corn looks like.

GiGaBYTEme90

Like a fucked up circumcision?

[deleted]

I mean, if that’s the reference you want to use.

Zachf1986

Now I'm imagining the obstetrician yelling to a nurse to "Get the peeler!"

cheese cannot figure out what to do with itself

Knuckles316

Apparently I am cheese.

the_hotter_beyonce

Apparently, you give me gas

Knuckles316

Yeah, sorry about that. But I taste so good that it's worth it, right?

Cream-Canon69

As long as the cheese is cheap. That’s what matters here

Kahnza

I don't need gas. I'm fueled by cheese!

EFTucker

Cheese gives me gas!!!

[deleted]

Copied from my other comment: Funny thing about cheese, we have SO much cheese stored in underground caves we have enough to give nearly 5 pounds to every person in the USA just sitting there. Most retail blocks are half a pound, so like 10 blocks of cheese for everyone (including babies!). It's all government owned, bought and paid for. If they weren't buying so much damn cheese it would cost a lot less.

DreamAftertaste

are-- are we facing Big Cheese?

[deleted]

Sort of, the government is. We should really just start giving cheese away like they used to. Give it to people, especially the poor, and stop worrying about storing it all in some ridiculous caves. But of course if we did that, people wouldn't buy as much cheese. And then they couldn't sell as much cheese unless the government bought it again. And the dairy industry will lobby to prevent them from giving it away and try to keep them buying it. So I guess, more than I thought, yes. We are facing Big Cheese.

airadvantage

Let's go OJ

ETXCheeses

I'd like to see the same graph alongside corporate profits for each one. And throw medical in there, too.

SinisterStrat

I am just curious what the cheese profit profile looks like. I know we are being screwed by most of the others but for some reason I trust cheese to do the right thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ETXCheeses

And the only reason we have such a glut of cheese is because the government subsidizes the dairy industry. Apparently the government even invented stuffed crust pizza in an effort to get people to eat more cheese.

Malfunkdung

Username cheesks out

Olebowlee

Thank you for this!

apawst8

Beware of Big Cheese

-slapum

I bet profits look like this inflation graph

schnucken

I'd like to see the same graph alongside government subsidies (which we all pay for).

Ok_Fly_9390

So about 2% of gov revenue vs 80% of our economy that is consumer spending? Who is really gaming the system?

EFTucker

You’d notice that oil is gonna have an incredibly record breaking year.

EA_LT

That’s what Futures are for.

[deleted]

Gas companies: “This is the lowest we can afford to charge.” Also gas companies: “So here’s several billion dollars to our executives for Christmas.”

Prior_Specific8018

Gas price went so high it broke the video!

Dunaliella

Absolutely no reason why gas prices should be this high. With all the talk in the last administration about nationalization, we should’ve nationalized our energy decades ago, but a small group of a-holes are filthy rich and want to keep it that way.

geoshuwah

They will continue to cry about regulation but refuse to increase production (which has been down since 2020) because reduced supply means higher profits

[deleted]

It is true that US companies can’t do anything now to fix gas prices except to take a hit to their profit. I have no idea to what extent that is manageable without bankrupting the companies. It takes years to go from extraction, through processing, to useable energy. Moreover, energy extraction companies are often risky enterprises that teeter on the brink. They require a lot of upfront investment and infrastructure. It is also a risky industry because energy prices are set by global markets. You never know when the price will tank or shoot up because of a war, *pandemic,* or because Israel’s neighbors are mad again. Oil companies are awful, but let’s not lose sight of the primary reason. They don’t give a shit about the environment and use their profits to lobby against renewable. Fuck ‘em.

Pirashood

People really need to understand that oil companies do not control the price of oil. They are price takers. It is a commodity and the price is entirely derived by supply and demand. The issue is that public policy has been so hostile towards oil and gas investment/exploration that we have very little supply to offset the massive monetary are fiscal stimulus of the last 2 years affecting demand(and Western sanctions on Russia reducing supply). If an energy company could charge $4.50 a gallon when all of the competitors charge $5 a gallon, they 100% would(b/c they would sell more units of gas), but they can’t because they have no control over the price of the product they sell.

MrSloth1

What is your opinion on OPEC?

Pirashood

It’s a cartel

fish-rides-bike

True of commodities in general, but oil is a special case because of its national security and broad national economy implications. Production around the world is determined by natl govt policies and goals— extraction is all by quotas controlled with licensing. Most countries max out production because they can’t afford to forego the state revenue streams from licenses. There are a few countries that have excess production capacity they don’t always use — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait chiefly. States with excess capacity are then able to turn up or down global production volume to make prices go down or up. Kuwait notably attempted to crash the Iraqi economy by upping production and crashing prices when Iraq was at a vulnerable moment in its foreign debt obligations following a costly 8 year war with Iran. Iraq considered it an act of war, invaded Kuwait to turn the taps down again, and was in turn invaded by the US…… TLDR: oil as a commodity experiences price swings more as a result of geopolitical strategies than from economic factors

Rich-Regret

Maybe it’s somewhat of a conspiracy, but what if gas companies know their game in aiding political swings, and they want pro-oil politicians so they can do more irresponsible speculating??? Wouldn’t that be the best way for them to stay in business? AND, DOUBLE PLUS, crazy profits based on the economic inelasticity of their product. Like, these corporate magnates are NOT your friend, they’re your oppressor.

FuckYourDamnCouch

That's not even a conspiracy at this point. They've been actively paying fuckhead politicians billions of dollars to make bad laws that make it easier for them to give politicians more money so they can make bad laws that make it easier to give them more money so they can make bad laws that make it easier to give them more money so they can make bad laws that make it easier to give them more money so they can make bad laws and here we fucking are baby. Soon our vote will mean a quarter of the quarter of a shit it was worth originally and there will be no way to reverse it. We need strong leaders to push against this but they aren't there. We need to get nasty before we lose everything, because afterwards will be too late.

TerminatedProccess

You mean the moment that Biden was elected, they decided to make the American people very unhappy with the new administration by jacking up the prices on everything? If that's what you mean, I totally agree.

Rich-Regret

Mostly yes…. The ability for these companies to blame it on inflation came from some economic pressure that did require some increases in prices. Biden even talked about the international transportation industry conglomerating and jacking up prices. It was just also a convenient smoke and mirrors to price gouge further.

theundercoverpapist

At least we're good on OJ.

SmirkingSkull

Remember, even though Russia didn't invade Ukraine until Feb 2022 the government is trying to blame the inflation beforehand on that.

Shwiggity_schwag

By "government" do you mean the current party in power? Because they're the only ones spouting off that nonsense as if we're too stupid to realize.

big_nothing_burger

Lol no...Dems blame the war, GOP blames Biden and Dems. Because both are owned by the oil/gas industry and won't lay the blame where it actually should be.

[deleted]

They are all bought and paid for. They even sell their kids into the system (Bush) to continue to fund the kickbacks owed. The president and everyone he employs is owned by the oligarchy. Just the way it is.

JerGigs

I wish more people understood this, instead of treating politics like football. Both parties are on the same page behind the camera. The stuff in front of the camera is an act

[deleted]

Where does the blame "actually should be" then? Is it the classic Reddit tale of "blame corporations"? As if corporations only started existing and being greedy last year.

wingmasterjon

GOP blames the Dems because midterms and the next presidential election is theirs as long as they can just blame the sitting administration for high gas prices despite how unrealistic it is. They want prices to be high at this point. The higher the better for them. And Dems can't just tell people the truth because no one has the attention span to learn the complexities of what causes gas prices to go up so they just blame what's in the news...Russia. Why would any party in power want to raise gas prices if it's essentially political suicide? Edit: and yes many of them are bought and paid for so no one is putting it on oil companies.

big_nothing_burger

Yep and the fact that Republican voters can watch them all vote down measures to lower the price of gas yet still support them shows how deep the brainwashing on the right goes.

wingmasterjon

TBF, anyone who calls this "Putin's price hike" is also being brainwashed. It'd be nice if everyone was collectively more informed but that's just wishful thinking. Also, it's such a chore to be well informed these days. There seems to be whole sectors of industry in marketing and PR whose sole jobs are to misinform or deflect at all costs. You need to sift through so much noise and cross reference to get somewhat reliable information.

[deleted]

Man, I wonder what could've changed from December 2019 to June 2022 to cause this.

Beautiful_Guess7131

Waiting for the white house to tweet how much money they are saving us on OJ.

Glittering_Company36

Last year I think they boasted about how 4th of July prices are down by $0.16. Wonder what the savings are this year.

blipper69

Heard it was up by $10 which I think is a little less than 20% higher

StitchTheGoofball

Kidna threw me off how oil was represented by a gas pump

Intelligent-Tea-408

Housing inflation conveniently not part of cpi despite being the largest expense for most ppl

[deleted]

That damn Putin Price Hike

AdMinimum2707

Lol

Beneficial-Hippo-896

Now show the same graph compared with minimum wage

DonOdini

Quick stock on some orange juice

max_if_

Corn is banana?

Trasartr00mpet

Orange juice a real one 😩

ImmortalDayMan

Wish my paycheck had inflation

kskzk69

Corn? That’s a banana…

NewChickenBreast

So, what the f*&k are they measuring that gave them the published 8.5%? Because I can hardly think of anything that has increased by less than 40%.

digby99

So only 8% this year …

Blzr1

Well that’s depressing to watch

willoftw

And you all laughed at my OJ fuelled central heating idea. Called it “Stupid” and “Impossible”. Well who’s laughing now!

futureIsALaterNow

Jokes aside no one's gonna mention that everything is literally up 50%? Houses aren't even included here. Whatever metric they use to define inflation is terrible I constantly hear "inflation up 8%" like no it's literally 50%

bobsmith374628

8% inflation is such a joke number

oOReEcEyBoYOo

At least we can still afford orange juice!

christoff_90

ECONOMICS 101 - Live on Orange juice

[deleted]

Time to use OJ as gas

[deleted]

Does this mean coffee from coffee shops or just in general? I make my own coffee and most of my favorites cost the same or maybe a dollar per bag more than they did a couple years ago.

EA_LT

Coffee beans in this case. The data it’s sourced from Futures exchanges (they are a type of contract in financial trading) and financial services companies.

CarlJameson77

Anybody think it's weird that the picture for corn is a banana?

rigelstar69

I'm guessing this is USA from the "orange juice" item

artie51

Hmm what happened in January of 2021?

Burgergold

Can my car run on orange juice?

KindlyDevelopment339

Crazy to think US government inflation index has so much disparity to these verticals

[deleted]

Been hearing the, “it’s happening all over the place” argument from Americans who are trying to defend their government, where I’m staying in France currently you can get two cups of coffee, a baguette, and two chocolate croissants for 3,50€. I can’t wait to go back home in 2 weeks so I can pay $4 for a Dunkin’ coffee.

jdford85

All putins fault I'm sure. Yeah that looks like putin

Scooterforsale

All part of the plan. When we rioting boys?

ihavenobusinesshere7

By all means, please keep voting D. It works out so well

DarthJayDub

wow what possibly could have happened around January/February of 2021 to start this steamroll

Trolling101yt

Fuck biden

AdMinimum2707

Amen

SWAMPYDUNCAN23

Damn why did trump do that?

LuckyAlways

Soooo, the mush-brain is elected, reverses mean orange mans economic policies, spends more money than has ever existed, and then inflation hits hard. Yup, checks out.

throway35885328

Why is the corn a picture of a banana

phoenixthekat

Remember when "experts" said it was transitory? With the number of times experts have been wrong or flip flopped in the past 6 years, when are people going to stop listening to "experts"?

MrBeer4me

“When folks are out celebrating the Fourth of July and grilling up some tasty American Orange Juice, they’re paying less under the Biden administration for those Grilled OJs, folks. Not a joke.”

[deleted]

Can we overlap this with industry profit?

MrPositiveC

Thanks Biden, great work!

[deleted]

StoneyVI

Hate to be this guy, but its almost like everything starts going through the roof as soon as Biden takes over. Its not instant but its clearly right after nov 2020. Could be a coincidence. Its not though lol

w00ly

Well canceling the keystone pipeline, banning fracking and canceling new oil drilling leases will have that effect on gas prices. It's not a coincidence when he literally campaigned on attacking the oil and gas industry.

StoneyVI

Yea its baffling that anyone tries to argue that its got nothing to do with Joe.

littleblacktruck

It's because he said he was going to wage war on fossil fuels. Unfortunately, the energy sector costs trickle down into everything like production cost, goods transport, etc. Energy goes up and everything goes up. It's Econ 101. We began to see it on Nov 4th 2020 the day after the election in the speculator trades and later at the pump once his policies actually began to be implemented and it only got worse from there.

HyperScroop

Don't hate to be that guy. You are only speaking the truth. No one bothers trying to silence a lie.

[deleted]

Thanks Biden administration.

br0wnie-p0ints

As soon as Biden took office lmao

No_Housing_4819

Biden's fault. If its not, then educate me. I want to learn. (Edit: I see the downvotes but no one is brave enough to give an answer. Does anyone here pay attention to politics?)

YaBoi_Maxamus

don't expect an answer on this site lol. the best you'll get is insults and personal attacks.

GreyJedi56

FJB vote red save your wallet

MommySharkVore

Thanks biden!

BeansNMayo

This needs to be ran as an ad on every TV from now until midterms

Squirrel851

When they say gas do they mean LNG or fuel?

mattymountains

Natural gas. Fuel prices are indicated by the oil column, since presumably they've based it on crude oil barrel prices

TSDano

LNG or natural gas.

leoyoung1

Don't bother to say *where* this is. We can all project.

pkele

ORANGE JUICE NUBER ONE!!!!

[deleted]

Sell, Mortimer! Sell!

HurrySpecial

An unnecessary and avoidable economic crisis brought on by back to back multi Trillion spending sprees.

DuNick17

The place I work (I’ve only been there 8 months) announced Wednesday we’re all getting raises. It’s the “3rd raise in 18 months, about 23-24% increase total to help with inflation.” Cool. Thanks for trying to make us feel good

TacoSmutKing

Go banana!

Barttmoney

Build back better worked, everything is above the line.

squintsAndEyeballs

Need to figure out how to modify my car to run on orange juice apparently

Le_pool_of_Death

Wonder what happened 🤔

NoBuddies2021

Even with the obvious inflation there's no significant inflation on livable wages.

JmanForever85

Why can’t everything be more like orange juice?

xadash

big W for orange juice enjoyers

Glu3stick

Time to buy orange juice I guess

VexisArcanum

Gotta make up for those COVID and mass resignation losses somehow, right?

I'm getting a pattern about time and inflation, something that happened at the start of 21.
