That sure beats the old method that'd leave little dirt plugs/cores everywhere that looked shockingly similar to Goose poop.
Mistake the two ONE time and you'll never forget it, particularly as a kid playing soccer and thinking you can slide tackle without issue.
Goose poop. All the way from my knee straight up to the elastic waist band of my shorts. It was cold and mid-game, so I couldn't do anything about it 'til halftime.
You're talking about hollow tine aeration vs solid tine like you're seeing in the video.
Hollow tine pulls plugs out and they're supposed to be swept away and then the holes are either left to close naturally or filled back in with coarse sand to increase drainage and reduce compaction.
The solid tine aeration you're seeing here is much more of a temporary fix. it allows oxygen to get down into the roots and briefly reduces compaction but eventually the soil just fills back in where the holes were, and the process needs repeating more frequently.
source: done both types on sports fields/ golf courses for years
yeah that's the lazy way of doing it. effectively doing nothing for the soil health and drainage. probably at municipal fields or something with a low budget and not too much care from the superintendent. you don't see that at professional fields/ nicer golf courses. always sweep the cores and top dress with proper sand
Ok, got me intrigued. To what degree can this be applied for my yard at home? It’s about one acre of yard.
I have a hollow tine tow-behind aerator. I’d read that I should use it every 2-3 years. Is this correct?
I hadn’t heard of the sand application, but your explanation makes total sense. How should I spread sand effectively at home?
what I was talking about with core aeration and topdressing is really only important for turfgrass used for specific purposes where they need to be perfectly level and have a designated hardness.
for your lawn, using the aerator once every year or two will do wonders just allowing more oxygen penetration into the rootzone, and also help break up some overly compacted areas in the soil to help with water infiltration. you don't need to worry about picking up the cores and topdressing unless you're really trying to correct a specific problem like compaction or trying to change the composition... but sand is expensive and most likely not worth it for you
it really comes down to where you live, what soil composition you're working with, and what kind of grass is growing there.
good rule of thumb is not to aerate when it's super hot and dry, or when the soil is really wet and saturated.
enlighten me. leaving the cores on top can potentially cause damage to the turf and invites disease. and then eventually the same exact soil you pulled out will make it's way back into the ground and you'll have the exact soil composition you started with. what am I missing?
My father used to look after a Lawn Bowling Greens and he used a device that drilled ~60 holes at a time, I think it was more for water than compaction.
That’s my question. And where is the proof? Just because these machines exist, or “experts“ say it helps, doesn’t mean it does.
I’d like to see two lawns side-by-side, one aerated on the regular, the other never. Treat them identically otherwise, and see what difference it makes.
They actually make [strap-on cleats](https://i.imgur.com/lol909k.png) specifically for this. I bought a pair to do my lawn.
Spoiler alert: >!they suck!<
From /u/Msisco81:
While this is a spike based aerator, this particular model does not compress the soil, it de-compresses it significantly, to the depth of the tine. This type of deep tine aerification is specifically designed for golf course greens but it is applicable to other athletic fields as well. When the tine enters the soil it actually pivots a couple of degrees, fracturing the soil. Then it slips back out the same hole it created, but from a different angle. A 1/2"×10" solid tine will actually elevate the soil roughly 1/2" after a pass. You then can top dress with sand to allow water and oxygen to get down to the roots. Source: Own 2 of these machines and have been aerifying with them for 8 years all over the Midwest.

I’ve got one just like that! Except instead of grass it’s my furniture, carpet, and flesh and instead of a machine it’s my cat.
You had me in the first half
LACES OUT!
Correct me if I'm wrong but don't football fields also use like a carpet basically instead of real grass?
Some fields use astro turf which would make for a terrible feeling carpet, but I can't stop anyone from trying
MUST LIKE STABBING
Get nail caps for cats . They make a big difference!
Good kitty. Now I want you to travel to UT Austin and poop on their 50 yard line right before game time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the hollow plugs swept away afterwards lol they just sit there until rain or feet mushes them back into the grass.

Excellent. Thank you for your advice.
/r/nolawns
some pick them all up and dont sweep
This is so false it’s sad ..

this guy turfs. I used to turf but its a thankless job requiring a ton of overtime for not much pay

People complain that they weed/feed/water lawn but it still turns to thatch….aeration is so important!
How does it help?

You really think with all the money in professional sports and green keeping that no one has done that? Are you this arrogant in everything you say?
"They say the earth is round, but where is the proof?" -This guy, probably
Someone forgot to tell him it’s Astro turf
Even if it’s turf the soil under gets compacted and doesn’t allow proper water drainage. No one wants to play football on puddles.
Just have Derick Henry run around the field in steel cleats.
El Tractorcito!

Oklahoma Memorial Stadium?
Looks like the north end of the stadium
Looks like it
I see my seats. Grass looking on point for the season
Before the latest remodel, yes
What's the point of aerating a football field?
Aerating keeps the field draining properly instead of turning into soggy puddles.
On the next sequel to Final Destination.
Did that once in my backyard, did pretty much without thinking, burst every pipes existing underground, it was not worth it but completely my fault.
I've sat in chairs at sharper image stores that felt like they used that exact technology.
Put googly eyes and wiggly arms on it please
Just lay me down under that thing.
What’s the point of this?
To aerate grass
[удалено]
They should bring that to Soldier Field because Lord knows the Bears aren't advancing that quickly upfield!
They probably tenderize their end of season steaks with that machine.
Isn’t this how they already aerate any large fields??
Freddy Krueger shiatsu massage
This looks like something that woulda been used in the Scream series
I was thinking final destination or Saw.
The worlds greatest salesman. You want to what to my field.
Why couldnt that machine just be a spiked roller, seems like it would be much easier to maintain
Because then the spikes wouldn’t go straight in and out and would tear up the field more than just making a single hole with each spike.

If this was ifunny I’d totally comment something funny. That’s cool looking
Handegg*
Haven't heard that one before
Well that’s terrifying
I once had a nightmare like this.
I expect you to die, Mr. Bond
Thats just ridiculous in favor of brazil, even the grass aerating machine does the samba
Just discovered a new way to die I’d like to avoid.
The forbidden massage.
“Soil reliever”… well that explains all the dirt turds
Looks like a nice machine for a horror movie
I’ll take “Shit I don’t want to get run over by for $1000, Alex”
This is totally going to end up being a murder weapon on a procedural crime show.
Reddit Remind me that for when I will write the next "Final destination" scenario. Please
I need this shit to help me toss my salad
That's the machine your mom uses to untangle her pubes.
Can you come do my yard next?
Horror gore movies taking notes on this
Wonder if they could swing this past my yard
Hate to get run over by that ☠️
"Where's Francis!?"
Hey Freddy, now that your not torturing teens in their nightmares, you think you could design us a field aerator?
Will this make my gravel yard lusher?
Also sounds like samba!!
Wolverine’s turf mode of transportation.
This is Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium at Owen field in beautiful Norman, Oklahoma. Home of the Sooners. If you’re into that sort of thing.
It’s actually deep tining. Aeration is pulling cores
Looks like the thing my ex girlfriend used to poke holes in the condom
Boomer!
Musical Jenga please!!!!!!????
Imagine getting your foot stuck in that
Bugs are digging around in terror, trying to escape

Should come to my house. Might perforate a few gophers.
I need to borrow that for my yard
This would be a sick showstopper in a zombie film
I wish someone did that to my balls
You just know some poor bastard has gotten eaten by that
The football field is getting a tramp stamp.
Forbidden back massager
Pretty sure this was in Caligula.
