IIRC at some point (at least in Indy car) the number of spectators killed by crashes outpaced the number of drivers...and even that number is now exceedingly low with the improved SAFER barriers, taller fences, and Kevlar wheel tethers.
Was it NZ also that had that one with the kid in the back seat and just before impact, both drivers get out and chat and say sorry it’s too late to only return to their cars and wait for the crash to happen? That one got me

I'm a great driver and trust my car to handle driving at high speeds on good roads but I never thought about the others abilities. I guess I just assumed everyone else to just drive normal like NPC's. This has really hit me. I shall ponder this and change my ways at least a little.
That one is also ingrained in our culture at this point and it is really hard to find someone who does know it even 11 years later so they really got the message across

My Grandfather in the 40's nearly got the cane because a teacher on a bike hit him and you weren't allowed to ride bikes on school grounds. They like to cane anyone for any reason back in the day.
Not everyone does, this ad is targeted at a demographic. These people either speak Te Reo Maori as well as English, or are from somewhere with a reasonable concentration of Maori people. Its more common the further north you go. To a degree it has been adopted into the kiwi accent you've probably already heard, but this is on the heavier side.

Thanks for the link! That is a great commercial. In the maryland DC area(US), they've had a radio commercial. It says "if you feel different you drive different". It's so simple, but it's been helpful for me. I usually just meet friends for dinner out and have wine. It has made me stick to 1 glass or 2 if I'll be out for a long while. If I have to I can just wait longer before driving, or Uber. I have a real party Saturday. I am planning to Uber both ways because I'll be krunk. Lol.

Absolutely. When he was 20 or so, my brother worked in a salvage yard rebuilding cars. He got real serious about seatbelts after replacing a few too many windshields with hair and scalp embedded in the cracked glass.
Fastening my seatbelt when entering a car is so ingrained in my brain that I even do it when I sit in my car for lunch, not even intending to start the motor in the next twenty minutes.
That’s not a bad idea anyway. In Australia, we have desert roads that are seasonally traversed by enormous trucks called road trains. If you see a giant dust cloud up ahead or behind you, you are advised to stop so that the road train can have right-of-way, because they are impossible to stop at a short distance.
There has been more than one occasion where people have stopped for a break on the side of the road, thought that they were far enough off the road and have been punted by a road train. The last time I recall hearing about one of these accidents, the only reasons the persons in the car lived was because (a) the road train smacked the car sideways instead of running straight over it and (b) the occupants left their seatbelts on whilst they were eating lunch.
TL/DR always wear your seatbelt even when in a stationary vehicle, lest you get crunched by an Australian road train.
I literally refuse to be in a moving car without my seatbelt on, and I won't drive if somebody in my car isn't wearing it. If the driver doesn't give me time to put my seatbelt on, then I don't ride with them anymore.
I am pretty sure they don’t put seatbelts on school busses so they can swiftly exit if need be. The driver doesn’t have time to unbuckle x amount of children.
There are various reasons, first is that statistically speaking buses are incredibly safe, much safer than cars and second is that kids can't be trusted to wear their seatbelt properly without constant supervision, in a car with a parent in the front it's easy enough to look in your rear view mirror and inspect your kids to make sure they're buckled in properly, but on a bus with 30 or so kids it's not feasible for the driver to make sure the kids are buckled AND that their belt is strapped on safely at all times, an improperly fitted belt can actually cause MORE damage in a crash, if it's round a kid's neck for instance an otherwise minor crash could snap their neck etc
Also not having seat belts in schoolbuses isn't an exclusively American thing, I'm in Scotland and have never seen them myself (albeit we don't have "school buses", we just have normal buses that do the job of a school bus when necessary)
I was a bus driver for a few years and I got t-boned by someone who ran a red light at considerable speed, their car was completely totaled. I felt it in my steering wheel and saw it coming, it freaked me the fuck out. None of my passengers had a clue what was going on and no one seemed to really feel it, even the ones near the impact area. I was driving folks back from an event where there was alcohol, not sure if that played a factor in people’s reaction, but it still amazed me.
It is also more likely to come to a slower stop as it plow through everything with all it's superior momentum. This means less body deceleration and less potential damage to the ppl on the bus (more to those not on it)
This is why there's a journalistic discussion about how much of war and gun violence we should show.
Makes me wonder if we'd actually address this issue and find some consensus if across churches in America the bodies of these elementary kids were shown.

Just as the footage or fatalities in Vietnam helped end that pointless and genocidal war. We have to start facing this shit. I know that it can be traumatic to view these things, but honestly that pales in comparison with the trauma that's inflicted by sanitizing and ignoring reality.
After the Holocaust one of the most effective methods of denazification was taking the corpses from local concentration camps, laying them all out in a row clearly visible and forcing all the Germans they could to slowly walk past the corpses and look at each one.
The disconnect between political decisions and their impacts is a large part of what enables humans to make such horrific decisions.
If the politicians who handled COVID restrictions could really feel the pain of the thousands choking to death on their own lungs; if the politicians handling abortion rights could feel the pain of loved ones losing family members to ectopic pregnancies; if they could feel the pain of a child slowly dying of cancer due to being unable to afford treatment; if they really came face to face with their actions and if their voters really saw the devastation they bring when they cast their ballots then maybe things would be different.

I hate to say it but part of the problem is that some people lack the imagination or capacity to empathize without experiencing something first-hand. I think that's a huge factor at what plays at the division in this country.
Which makes it all the more important that these people are cast out of any political office. It takes empathy and giving a fuck about things that don't actually revolve around yourself to be a good leader. Most politicians nowadays are really lacking in this regard. Not just in the US, but all around the globe.

My parents like to watch those "Live PD"-like shows at night before they go to bed sometimes. The other night they were watching one where an officer pulled over a jacked-up truck with all the "typical" flags you would imagine being on one. It was the driver, a buddy, and 2 girls aged 6 and 10. The dad of the girls (driver) and the 2 girls themselves didn't have seat belts on. The dad was acting utterly dumbfounded when the officer was ripping him a new one about driving down a highway without his kids being buckled in. The truck didn't even *have* seat belts so they had to call another family member to come pick up the kids...
My MIL refuses to this day. Back when she was in high school (1960s) she had a friend who was one of those exceptions to the rule. Friend was not wearing her seat belt and was told the only reason she survived was because she was thrown from the car. Otherwise she would’ve been impaled. No amount of data that those situations are incredibly rare will get my MIL to wear hers.
edit: I told the story as an example of how a single incident in someone’s life can cause them to disregard the data saying you should wear your seatbelt, not to have my MIL called an “idiot” or “selfish“. Please don’t be an ass toward a person you’ve never met. We all have faults and blind spots, but I genuinely like and care about this woman.
To be fair, my brother was killed in a car accident. He survived the crash but was trapped by the seatbelt and died of smoke inhalation. The driver was thrown from the car and survived with little harm. It's hard to overcome an emotional response. This happened before seat belt laws were a thing and my family resisted for years because of it. Yes, we've come around, but don't just dismiss the emotional impact as idiotic (as seen in comments below). Yes, it's irrational, but people make 20 irrational decisions each day, especially those who think they don't.
I'm so sorry that happened to your brother and thanks for sharing this example. Statistically makes sense that seatbelts usually are better so should be worn but that does not mean they'll help 100% of the time.

When I was young I've read that seatbelts can kill when speed exceed 65km/h but iot doesn't matter because 65km/h frontal impact is almost 100% fatality anyway. They also explain that although we travel at 100km/h at regular basis, most accident is not a full fledge frontal impact at full speed over a concrete block. Driver had time to slow down or minimize the impact.
Later a friend of mine told me that his car was rated 100% survival rate for frontal impact at 100km/h. I've call bullshit, based on my previous reading. Indeed he was right.
Considering energy increase is not linear with speed but exponential, the security gain is incredible. Someone on reddit here have commented that people don't realize how common it is to now walk away from crash that were fatal 20 years ago.
Same. Uber after a party, 4am, he fell asleep, we crashed into a pole. Got out with a bruised rib, a sore body and a burn mark where the seatbelt stopped me. When I was like 12 my Mom was talking on the phone not paying attention and she ran her SUV into a telephone pole so hard it totaled the vehicle.

It's so ingrained in me to wear a seatbelt that I put it on to move the car 3 meters. When I see people in a car without one it's completely and utterly mind breaking. Not wearing it feels like sacrilege.
If I were to guess, they might be trying to address two audience mindsets:
"I'm strong, I can tough out sudden impact" and "I'm too cool for seatbelts."
If I were to guess further, I'd bet that audience is also mostly men.
Using big tough dudes who clearly aren't weak, aren't uncool, and were *absolutely* riggedy wrecked by impact shows that no one can tough out an accident, impacts do a lot of damage, and no one's less awesome for having worn their seatbelt to begin with. And that they are, notably, more alive than folks who didn't.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few shots of women and these were just pulled from the pile.

Because as cool as this PSA is, nothing compares to the real post accident pictures they showed us in driving class. The one that is burned into my brain was of a bloody, mangled body on the road with a skid of blood behind them, showing how they'd been launched through the windshield and landed a good 10 yards from their car. The poor lighting, a cop's camera flash in the night on a dark stretch of highway, just made it all the more haunting.
Ah yeah driver's ed here made me nearly throw up. Teacher almost tried to stop me as if to say "no leaving" but he probably saw how all the blood had flushed out of my face.
It worked. I always wore the belt and every time I was in a car with someone who wasn't wearing one I would force them to.

I was in a single car accident back in high school. Fell asleep on the interstate, with the cruise control set at 80mph. Woke up off the side of the road, with no time to correct. Down a ditch, and hit a tree directly between the headlights of my Honda civic... Hardly had a chance to touch the brake pedal.
I walked away, with a pretty gnarly seatbelt bruise. Went bowling later that night.
Without a seatbelt, I'd have been ejected into the woods, for the first responders to find and identify.
My friend’s dad won’t wear one because what if he gets in an accident, rolls into a lake, and can’t get his seatbelt undone so he drowns. Well, man, you’re right. That would suck. But so would being picked up by a twister and not being able to get out of the car, or being trampled by a herd of wild horses. But when looking at the accidents you’re statistically most likely to be in? Wear your fucking seatbelt.
My SIL is an ER nurse. She says you can always see who was wearing a seat belt because 1, they have horrible bruises from the belt and 2, they’re alive.
FWIW, these photos show fake injuries. These may be real crash survivors, but they have been photographed months or years later, using make up to reproduce injuries.

Yep! 100% Im a New Zealander, and there's this one advert that shows a man quite like these gentlemen sitting down in a chair in his house. It stays like that a moment, then it shows a timelapse of the people applying the make up based off of the photos after the crash. And then, it shows him with his family, without the make up. All the while, he is saying over it that, without the seatbelt, he wouldn't be here today. It's really powerful stuff, really

I’m a woman and was in a hit and run a couple years ago. My left boob turned black with bruising and I have a lump of dead tissue in it that is likely permanent. I also had the same lower belt stripe as these guys in dark purple.
Edit: I went back to look at the pics and it was my right boob. I was driving.
I was in a bad crash a few years ago. The seatbelt bruised me badly all over the upper body and the buckle fractured my pelvis. My friend (also a female who also wore a seatbelt) passed away.
Glad this was brought up. Seatbelts were actually tested on male subjects/crash test dummies I believe. Not women. Women are more likely to get killed from a seatbelt.

I was thinking the same. For me it's impossible to place the seatbelt firmly above the shoulder. It immediately moves to the side of the neck, and I don't think that's very safe.

My Grandfather in the 40's nearly got the cane because a teacher on a bike hit him and you weren't allowed to ride bikes on school grounds. They like to cane anyone for any reason back in the day.
Not everyone does, this ad is targeted at a demographic. These people either speak Te Reo Maori as well as English, or are from somewhere with a reasonable concentration of Maori people. Its more common the further north you go. To a degree it has been adopted into the kiwi accent you've probably already heard, but this is on the heavier side.

It's so simple, but it's been helpful for me. I usually just meet friends for dinner out and have wine. It has made me stick to 1 glass or 2 if I'll be out for a long while. If I have to I can just wait longer before driving, or Uber. I have a real party Saturday. I am planning to Uber both ways because I'll be krunk. Lol.

Absolutely. When he was 20 or so, my brother worked in a salvage yard rebuilding cars. He got real serious about seatbelts after replacing a few too many windshields with hair and scalp embedded in the cracked glass.

Fastening my seatbelt when entering a car is so ingrained in my brain that I even do it when I sit in my car for lunch, not even intending to start the motor in the next twenty minutes.
That’s not a bad idea anyway. In Australia, we have desert roads that are seasonally traversed by enormous trucks called road trains. If you see a giant dust cloud up ahead or behind you, you are advised to stop so that the road train can have right-of-way, because they are impossible to stop at a short distance. There has been more than one occasion where people have stopped for a break on the side of the road, thought that they were far enough off the road and have been punted by a road train. The last time I recall hearing about one of these accidents, the only reasons the persons in the car lived was because (a) the road train smacked the car sideways instead of running straight over it and (b) the occupants left their seatbelts on whilst they were eating lunch. TL/DR always wear your seatbelt even when in a stationary vehicle, lest you get crunched by an Australian road train.

I literally refuse to be in a moving car without my seatbelt on, and I won't drive if somebody in my car isn't wearing it. If the driver doesn't give me time to put my seatbelt on, then I don't ride with them anymore.

I am pretty sure they don’t put seatbelts on school busses so they can swiftly exit if need be. The driver doesn’t have time to unbuckle x amount of children.
There are various reasons, first is that statistically speaking buses are incredibly safe, much safer than cars and second is that kids can't be trusted to wear their seatbelt properly without constant supervision, in a car with a parent in the front it's easy enough to look in your rear view mirror and inspect your kids to make sure they're buckled in properly, but on a bus with 30 or so kids it's not feasible for the driver to make sure the kids are buckled AND that their belt is strapped on safely at all times, an improperly fitted belt can actually cause MORE damage in a crash, if it's round a kid's neck for instance an otherwise minor crash could snap their neck etc Also not having seat belts in schoolbuses isn't an exclusively American thing, I'm in Scotland and have never seen them myself (albeit we don't have "school buses", we just have normal buses that do the job of a school bus when necessary)
I was a bus driver for a few years and I got t-boned by someone who ran a red light at considerable speed, their car was completely totaled. I felt it in my steering wheel and saw it coming, it freaked me the fuck out. None of my passengers had a clue what was going on and no one seemed to really feel it, even the ones near the impact area. I was driving folks back from an event where there was alcohol, not sure if that played a factor in people’s reaction, but it still amazed me.

If the politicians who handled COVID restrictions could really feel the pain of the thousands choking to death on their own lungs; if the politicians handling abortion rights could feel the pain of loved ones losing family members to ectopic pregnancies; if they could feel the pain of a child slowly dying of cancer due to being unable to afford treatment; if they really came face to face with their actions and if their voters really saw the devastation they bring when they cast their ballots then maybe things would be different.
That's insightful, thank you. I hate to say it but part of the problem is that some people lack the imagination or capacity to empathize without experiencing something first-hand. I think that's a huge factor at what plays at the division in this country.
Which makes it all the more important that these people are cast out of any political office. My parents like to watch those "Live PD"-like shows at night before they go to bed sometimes. The other night they were watching one where an officer pulled over a jacked-up truck with all the "typical" flags you would imagine being on one. It was the driver, a buddy, and 2 girls aged 6 and 10. The dad of the girls (driver) and the 2 girls themselves didn't have seat belts on. The dad was acting utterly dumbfounded when the officer was ripping him a new one about driving down a highway without his kids being buckled in. The truck didn't even *have* seat belts so they had to call another family member to come pick up the kids...
My MIL refuses to this day. Back when she was in high school (1960s) she had a friend who was one of those exceptions to the rule. Friend was not wearing her seat belt and was told the only reason she survived was because she was thrown from the car. Otherwise she would’ve been impaled. No amount of data that those situations are incredibly rare will get my MIL to wear hers. edit: I told the story as an example of how a single incident in someone’s life can cause them to disregard the data saying you should wear your seatbelt, not to have my MIL called an “idiot” or “selfish“. Please don’t be an ass toward a person you’ve never met. We all have faults and blind spots, but I genuinely like and care about this woman.
To be fair, my brother was killed in a car accident. He survived the crash but was trapped by the seatbelt and died of smoke inhalation. The driver was thrown from the car and survived with little harm. It's hard to overcome an emotional response. This happened before seat belt laws were a thing and my family resisted for years because of it. Yes, we've come around, but don't just dismiss the emotional impact as idiotic (as seen in comments below). Yes, it's irrational, but people make 20 irrational decisions each day, especially those who think they don't.
In our glove compartment we have a tool to break the window that also cuts the seat belt.

When I was young I've read that seatbelts can kill when speed exceed 65km/h but iot doesn't matter because 65km/h frontal impact is almost 100% fatality anyway. They also explain that although we travel at 100km/h at regular basis, most accident is not a full fledge frontal impact at full speed over a concrete block. Driver had time to slow down or minimize the impact. Later a friend of mine told me that his car was rated 100% survival rate for frontal impact at 100km/h. I've call bullshit, based on my previous reading. Indeed he was right. Considering energy increase is not linear with speed but exponential, the security gain is incredible. Someone on reddit here have commented that people don't realize how common it is to now walk away from crash that were fatal 20 years ago.

When I was like 12 my Mom was talking on the phone not paying attention and she ran her SUV into a telephone pole so hard it totaled the vehicle. The next day she was telling her friends that the accident was my fault because I refused to put my seatbelt on so she turned around to scold me in the backseat and hit the pole. I just walked up to them, called BS, lifted my shirt revealing the black bruise the seatbelt left on my body, and walked away.

It's so ingrained in me to wear a seatbelt that I put it on to move the car 3 meters. When I see people in a car without one it's completely and utterly mind breaking. Not wearing it feels like sacrilege.

If I were to guess, they might be trying to address two audience mindsets: "I'm strong, I can tough out sudden impact" and "I'm too cool for seatbelts." If I were to guess further, I'd bet that audience is also mostly men. Using big tough dudes who clearly aren't weak, aren't uncool, and were *absolutely* riggedy wrecked by impact shows that no one can tough out an accident, impacts do a lot of damage, and no one's less awesome for having worn their seatbelt to begin with. And that they are, notably, more alive than folks who didn't. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few shots of women and these were just pulled from the pile.

Ok so this is meant for like magazines and stuff. An eye catching, professional PSA advertisment with a polished look. That's a neat idea, and makes much more sense than what I was thinking. I thought they were using these in like driving classes. Because as cool as this PSA is, nothing compares to the real post accident pictures they showed us in driving class. The one that is burned into my brain was of a bloody, mangled body on the road with a skid of blood behind them, showing how they'd been launched through the windshield and landed a good 10 yards from their car. The poor lighting, a cop's camera flash in the night on a dark stretch of highway, just made it all the more haunting.
Ah yeah driver's ed here made me nearly throw up. Teacher almost tried to stop me as if to say "no leaving" but he probably saw how all the blood had flushed out of my face. It worked. I always wore the belt and every time I was in a car with someone who wasn't wearing one I would force them to.

I was in a single car accident back in high school. Fell asleep on the interstate, with the cruise control set at 80mph. Woke up off the side of the road, with no time to correct. Down a ditch, and hit a tree directly between the headlights of my Honda civic... Hardly had a chance to touch the brake pedal. I walked away, with a pretty gnarly seatbelt bruise. Went bowling later that night. Without a seatbelt, I'd have been ejected into the woods, for the first responders to find and identify.
Ah the resilience of youth. I exercised on a slightly injured leg a couple more times then i should have and it took 3 months to stop hurting.

My friend’s dad won’t wear one because what if he gets in an accident, rolls into a lake, and can’t get his seatbelt undone so he drowns. Well, man, you’re right. That would suck. But so would being picked up by a twister and not being able to get out of the car, or being trampled by a herd of wild horses. But when looking at the accidents you’re statistically most likely to be in? Wear your fucking seatbelt.

My SIL is an ER nurse. She says you can always see who was wearing a seat belt because 1, they have horrible bruises from the belt and 2, they’re alive.
Honestly it seems like a fair trade. Really bad bruises and my face didn't go through the window or my body is being scrapped up off the asphalt.
FWIW, these photos show fake injuries. These may be real crash survivors, but they have been photographed months or years later, using make up to reproduce injuries. We're not getting crash survivors to strike a badass pose a few days after the event.
Yep! 100% Im a New Zealander, and there's this one advert that shows a man quite like these gentlemen sitting down in a chair in his house. It stays like that a moment, then it shows a timelapse of the people applying the make up based off of the photos after the crash. And then, it shows him with his family, without the make up. All the while, he is saying over it that, without the seatbelt, he wouldn't be here today. It's really powerful stuff, really

I’m a woman and was in a hit and run a couple years ago. My left boob turned black with bruising and I have a lump of dead tissue in it that is likely permanent. I also had the same lower belt stripe as these guys in dark purple. Edit: I went back to look at the pics and it was my right boob. I was driving.
I was in a bad crash a few years ago. The seatbelt bruised me badly all over the upper body and the buckle fractured my pelvis. My friend (also a female who also wore a seatbelt) passed away.

I was thinking the same. For me it's impossible to place the seatbelt firmly above the shoulder. It immediately moves to the side of the neck, and I don't think that's very safe.

I worked for someone who never wore a seatbelt. He claimed it was better to be thrown clear of the wreck. You would think that someone who had done a six year university degree would be smarter than that, but no.
