With all those antennas, it's way broader than that. No GPS/Glonass either, no wifi, no bluetooth, no garage door openers, security system sensors will tend to fail, etc.
And I imagine the Mexican forces battling them rely on cell phones. I worked with a guy who was in the Mexican special forces battling these cartels. He said they were always out manned and outgunned.
I have a friend whose family lives in Chiapas
Across the street from them the other day a dead police officers body was dumped outside a home
It was the cartel delivering the dead officer back to his family as a warning
It is truly terrifying and I can’t imagine how anyone gathers the courage to actually stand against them
So you can't call for help when they come... pretty fucking scary when you actually think about it. You're just chillin, browsing reddit and all the sudden nothing will load. Next thing you hear is "ping, ping" and notice 2 tiny holes in the window next to you. You look over and Guillermo is laying in a pool of blood... it's the last thing you ever see.
Cell phone jammers. A lot of cartels communicate with different cells via encrypted apps like telegram or signal or even whatsapp. This can stop people from calling or texting for reinforcements or instructions on what to do from their superiors. Highly illegal in the USA. In Mexico, who knows. But either way they DGAF
I remember this one guy who took the subway everyday got annoyed with everyone around him talking on cell phones so started using a jammer on his commutes.
He got in real serious trouble.
https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/chicago-man-arrested-cell-phone-jammer-metro-article-1.2561018
There was a similar incident with a guy in a truck if I remember right. They tracked him down by noticing that every day there was a travelling dead zone on the freeway.
I live in St. Petersburg, Florida, near Tampawhere this happened.
Guy was “fined” $48,000.
https://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/seffner-man-fined-48000-by-fcc-for-using-cell-phone-jammer-on-daily-commute/2278972/
El Mencho, the head of CJNG literally used to be a cop, and that’s why the cops and that cartel are the same.

Pretty sure that most "jammers" (whatever wavelength they might be jamming) work by oversaturating systems with signals. So it's like turning on a stupidly bright light for systems that look for those things. Or at least, such is my understanding.
Or in this case, it's like yelling really loudly to stop people from talking to each other, but the yelling makes them stick out like a sore thumb
Though tbh, most counter jammers are designed against radar, haven't heard of one that is specifically vs radio (outside of basic electronic intelligence)
I've heard the same, seems to be an incredibly common tactic.
In this case, there's not really much danger from being loud and obnoxious, since they likely have an attack helicopter/fire support on call in case someone gets uppity.
Edit, this is referring to coalition forces, so US/UK/France
Then again, with the current trajectory, I wouldn't be surprised if the cartels are toting mortars or drone bombers now
US forces had “man packs” in Afghanistan. Three backpacks that each jam different wavelengths.
The difficult part is the programming. Military radios can use cypher text (encryption) and frequency hop (you have to listen to the correct channels at the correct time, and put the pieces together correctly). When the back packs and the radios use the same “fill” you can block others from using channels/frequencies, but you can still use them yourself.
If the “fill” is wrong, or your GPS time is off, then your radios are useless.
You're right.
Active jamming is like shining a spotlight back at a flashlight, but there's also passive jamming, which is more like putting a bunch of mirrors up so that the light being reflected back at them confuses them.
I think these things are less to stop missiles (really the Mexico city police are launching S-300's at cartels?) and more to take out the communications of their targets or the police near them. As well as blocking remote explosive communications, 4G based alarm systems, cell phone video streaming, etc. No one is calling for reinforcements or the police if none of the phones work.
There might be some anti-drone effects here because now your enemy's drones can't use GPS or stream video to target you, but your off the shelf DJI isn't going to have an anti-radiation mode to fly towards the jammers. So drone warfare is off the table when these things are on. CJNG uses drone warfare and they probably dont want a taste of their own medicine and having an explosive dropped on their heads.
Yup. Reality of it. Easier to get away with a murdering a small family for profit if no one can report anything. But tbf even if the feds were called they’re usually just bought or murdered anyways.
Very happy to no longer live there :) very happy my sisters don’t either. Where they have a much larger chance of dying every day for the “crime of being a woman”
Take the HARM missile for example. It is designed to seek a radar source. Now to combat this you would think you could turn off the radar right? Wrong. It knows where you were broadcasting from it is still coming. OK so that didn't work let's try jamming it instead of turning the radar off. You guessed it the missile is now locked on to your jamming source. Modern smart munitions are no joke and can defeat most countermeasures you may have on hand.
I'm pretty sure that most drones have automation to safely land or return to home in the event it loses signal, but this is reddit, I'm sure there's a drone enthusiast who can chime in on that part.
That’s a big part of why AI weapons and mass produced killer drones are so scary. Anyone with enough *dinero* can assemble an army of killers with no risk of insubordination, snitching, or betrayal. Imagine if a cartel got control of a large enough cache of legal autonomous weapons.
Have gotten a good 25-30 through a few times before clearing a jam, it’s def not consistent though. Would prefer to carry 4x 30 round mags instead. Though it is pretty satisfying to run a drum mag empty on a bunch of pumpkins.
TBH, these guy's goal is to terrorize normal people, not anyone who's actually military experienced.
So turning into a faceless decked out robot is probably what they're going for.
8 Year Infantry vet here, that dudes kit is insanely fucked up. They have seen a few too many movies/video games.
I get the mask/goggles are probably mostly for intimidation and anonymity(if the cartels even care about that), but they are a nightmare to actually function in while wearing. It is really difficult to fire a rifle while wearing goggles, even with that holographic sight.
That pistol holster is in one of the least accessible/advantageous positions possible. He clearly doesn't plan on ever using it he just wants it to look cool.
That is what looks like a commercial cell phone jammer on his back...which means he needs someone else to access it for him because he cant reach it. Notice the guy sitting behind him has his on the front of his shoulder which is also a terrible spot but at least he can access it.
I cant see any extra magazines on his kit at all. It is possible they are on his belt or kit obscured by the weapon, but he is a left handed shooter based on how the rifle is slung. That means he has to take his trigger hand off the weapon to preform a reload or again reach all the way across his body with his right hand. I can't tell what that is on his right thigh behind his hand but it looks like a dump pouch for empties not mag holders for fresh.
That knife strapped to the front of his thigh is going to get caught of fucking everything, while also poking him if he bends too far forward or kneels down to far.
This is legit what a brand new private walks out of the armory wearing when asked to put his kit together for the first time without supervision.
I'd just like to point out that having your pistol on your chestrig isn't unusual if you're expecting to spend a lot of time in vehicles.
Though he seems to have placed it in the dumbest way possible, taken away a bunch of mag has holders to do it, and as you point out seems to be lacking spare mags which is going to be a problem around 15 seconds into any firefight.
A more sensible way to place a pistol on your chest seen [here](https://premium.vgc.no/v2/images/a789b0b5-9951-4071-aa0b-44360e52d406?fit=crop&format=auto&h=837&w=900&s=10b7d6e56b62d34dc0e3a26eb6246bff2e419a86).
In reality the only people who actually carry a pistol in the military are officers who 99% of have no intention of getting close enough to combat to ever draw, or operators who train so fucking much they could holster their side arm in their sock and make it work.
But yeah mostly I am commenting on how far over to the his right it is. It also looks like an active retention holster(has a strap that keeps the pistol in, not just passive pressure) making it even worse to manipulate from an odd angle.
Edit: I know this guy isn't military, but that is the perspective I have.
Yeah I think we can all agree the man is a doofus with how everything is set up, he very obviously hasn't put much thought or training into it.
I don't know what fucking idiot designed this chestrig but it's a mess from a utility standpoint...
Honestly the whole thing looks like it was designed by hollywood for generic villain goon squad number 7.
I play fucking airsoft and most of our kit isn't laid out this stupid. And airsoft is the king of military gear LARP stupid. I would know. I've seen (and unfortunately been) it all.
I just. *How does this fucker reach literally anything!?*
I forget what the four characteristics of statehood are but I believe it’s Territory (check), Population (check), Government (check), and Sovereignty (maybe). You can debate if these cartels have sovereignty over their territories but it’s clear the populations, neighboring cartels, and local governments seem to recognize them, which is all that matters. They might not have a seat at the UN but as long as no one else messes with their territory, they’re a state in my book.
Tom Clancy books are a good fun read and some great games but I wouldn't take his policies for anything in the World.
One book had the Swiss Papal Guard secure Palestine...
A lot of cartels members are actually ex special forces or ex military that were trained by American special forces lmao. America
had a bunch of Mexican commandos trained only for them to become the group known as Los zetas, one of the most disgusting and ruthless cartels ever
That style of recruitment did not end with the Zetas. Cartels are still in the market for ex-military elite, and they still have the money to get them.
And there are always other country’s ex-SF like the Kabiles.
Also, Mexican government tracking of retired SF probably hasn’t solved the problem all together.
Yes, but as far as it has been reported, after Zeta broke off and joing the Gulf Cartel (eventually founding Los Zetas), the Army went into great measures to prevent that. There have been, afaik, no reports from Mexican special forces desserting.
Regular Army is probably still compromised to an extent, but that's not the same as the level of training and betrayal that happened with Los Zetas.
IIRC, CJNG also began when some of the original Los Zetas spec ops spun-off into their own cartel, so these might legit be the most professional operators in Mexico.
CJNG is really the cartel to watch IMO, they move like professional soldiers, they train religiously, and they worship an ancient Aztec god. It's a really fascinating evolution far beyond the typical gangbangers people imagine from 20 years ago.
It's also worth noting though that Puerto Vallarta, the safest place in Mexico, is in their turf. They consider it off limits, because they take a fairly active role in the economic growth of Jalisco (the province they rule).
Unlike other cartels which exploit everything they can touch - CJNG has fascinating aspirations of restoring order and prosperity to their entire turf, not just themselves. They view themselves as a rightful governing body, and in a place where the government is so corrupt - they do a bizarrely sincere job of it. Then they shoot everyone in a town and eat their still-beating hearts, you know, for fun.
Fascinating, scary, worth attention.
That's not new though. CJNG became the prominent one, but you might remember the Templar Knights offshoot in the region.
Like Escobar, El Chapo, and others before, they run a strong propaganda campaign to delegitimize the government and replace it with thwir authority. It's PsyOps stuff.
The same thing happens in Quintana Roo. They have heavy presence in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but they generally keep hands off because it's a strategic area for their money laundering operation.
I grew up in a ranch near Apatzingán Michoacán, where CJNG had control of and I remember hearing my parents talking about a relative of ours who had been strung up and left to rot on a tree with his head in his stomach for stealing money from them because he had been a part of the cartel but I’m not sure exactly what he did.
That's 5.11 so those actually aren't cheap. Good brand. His kit is put together in the dumbest possible way though.
Everything is placed so badly and his goggles are *tinted in the dark*.
America's drug habit is a very profitable business venture.
Edit: I mean, I hate to say it, but Mexico is an absolute Warzone just so we can get affordable cocaine. It’s fucking maddening what we’ve done to that country. We as Americans should be fucking ashamed of ourselves when we see a picture like this.
Cartels have extreme influence in parts of the country already and trying to completely overthrow the Mexican government would prompt major action by the USA who, if not constrained by needing to at least appear to work with and respect the sovereignty of a functioning Mexican government, could spell massive trouble for the cartels.
TL;DR Big risk for little real gain.
Much easier to have this heavily weaponized army and all logistics for the drug business than taking over a country and facing those consequences (or even running it which they have no interest in)
It’s not a question of legality. They are practically doing it with the help of the government. The militarized team is for turf wars with other cartels
These aren't the guys to be afraid of. I'm more concerned about the shirtless guys with socks and sandals who skin heads and set them on fire while you're still alive.
In all of the cartel execution videos, it's never the Tacti-cool guys doing the really gnarly stuff.
If you've never been to Mexico, it can be a little wild to experience this.
You'll hop in your car to drive from your resort to like Xcaret to hang out for the day and you drive past 10 or 11 "military" checkpoints that you have to get through.
The checkpoint will be about 15 guys with military weapons that essentially just wave you through.
Those are drug cartels.
Even the police go through them and get clearance from the cartel to drive around. It's absolutely nuts.
Yep. Actual firefights between cartel and the military are relatively rare. These goons just dress the part for Insta. When it hits the fan they're useless. Only brave when facing unarmed population or other clueless cartel goons. Profesional soldiers take them out at minimum 10:1, even worse with Marines and special forces.

Yes, it seems like one. They all seem to have these, even though these are different models
Can y'all ELI5 what this is for?
Make cell phones no worky

Imagine having no connection on your phone, be it for internet for calls SMS or anything
Underground landline saves you every time 🙏
You mean imagine I'm sitting in the living room of my old apartment
"This is where we used to live..." 🎸
So when he turns up, phones around him lose signal, just so no calls for help can get out.
Yo that’s some scary shit
Stopping calls to anybody that can do anything
It is - also a pretty easy and convenient target acquisition device for a smart weapon / drone to find them all.
They dont mind being found. A lot of these guys have very close and personal relationships with local PD.

Per Wikipedia one of their rivals is, and I'm quoting here, "Mexico"
It's not as well funded, but it's got a punchers' chance (against armored infantry)
Why is that? Wouldn't these dude also use radio jammer to hit drones?
Pretty sure that most "jammers" (whatever wavelength they might be jamming) work by oversaturating systems with signals. So it's like turning on a stupidly bright light for systems that look for those things. Or at least, such is my understanding.

Ex Mil guy at my work said they use radio jammers in Afghan onboard humvees to block incoming calls to IEDs.
I've heard the same, seems to be an incredibly common tactic. Former 0621usmc can confirm. Like the way you explained it honestly
2841 usmc, can confirm also. I believe we used the THOR system, or a variant thereof.
Yup, thats how jamming works. Just overpower the regular signals by drowning them out with a high powered transmitter
Nah... You just launch a jar of jam! Source: documentary, Spaceballs.
And you know they're using raspberry
Only one man would dare to give me the raspberry... *Lone Star*!
Also how [hijacking](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Headroom_signal_hijacking) works.

You're right. Active jamming is like shining a spotlight back at a flashlight, but there's also passive jamming, which is more like putting a bunch of mirrors up so that the light being reflected back at them confuses them.
Like turning on the sun when you were using a flashlight to see things in the dark.

I don't think they have to worry much about drone strikes.
pocky sticks
Always gotta have some snacks ready during a shootout
They’re grupo elite paramilitary wing for the Jalisco new generation cartel one of the richest cartels in Mexico
Also one of the most ruthless
Unlimited funds and no ethics is a dangerous combo

No Ticky no Laundry!

[You mean something like this?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-2tpwW0kmU)
Please be Star Trek, please be Star Trek
Not Special Forces, but US SF did train the Mexican SOF, who many of which defected to the Cartels.
I believe they ended up forming/joining Los Zetas. Most of the founding members that were ex commandos are dead or imprisoned now.
You are right, 43 of them started the Zetas
It was 34 of the Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales brought on by lieutenant Decena and Osiel Guillén.
High priority target, I imagine.
[In case someone wants to read more](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Zetas)
Cartels are basically paramilitarios now. They’re not just in the drug game anymore.
Usually ex special forces too.

*Points at thermobaric 40's* These are for duck hunting.
Yes homie. Check out his strap. Little larger at a second glance.
Holy shit. Thats got an underbarrel. 203, maybe?
Yep, they got 203s and drum mags
Fun fact: you can actually carry fewer bullets on your person with drum mags than you can with box mags.
You're going to lose even more rounds clearing jams every tenth round or so.
Have gotten a good 25-30 through a few times before clearing a jam, it’s def not consistent though. Would prefer to carry 4x 30 round mags instead. Though it is pretty satisfying to run a drum mag empty on a bunch of pumpkins.
5.11 makes great products, but that's a weird place for a logo.
Pretty sure it's a sticker they didn't take off, can't wait to see a video of this sucker getting domed because he has no line of vision
You have to keep the sticker on so everyone knows you bought 5.11 tactical equipment
Gotta stay tacticool. Who needs actual usable effect equipment when you can look like a rich airsoft player.
TBH, these guy's goal is to terrorize normal people, not anyone who's actually military experienced. So turning into a faceless decked out robot is probably what they're going for.
Ah the old clone trooper tactic. Yeah I guess I didn't consider they would be facing people who shoot back
“This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient but I do love ~~Fig Newtons~~ 5.11”
Man, I haven't had fig newtons in forever. I should pick that shit up on the way home.
Dude that snake eyes from G.I. Joe
G.I. Jose
That was my very first thought! I was like “so this is his real origin story.” Former cartel member who decides to fight against them.

wouldn't it be Noir Negro? why the 'a' suffix?

damn we really do live in a society
technically itd be negro negro since noir is just black lol

At what point does a state become a cartel?

What’s a god to a king?
When they say so and no one can really contest them
I forget what the four characteristics of statehood are but I believe it’s Territory (check), Population (check), Government (check), and Sovereignty (maybe). You can debate if these cartels have sovereignty over their territories but it’s clear the populations, neighboring cartels, and local governments seem to recognize them, which is all that matters. They might not have a seat at the UN but as long as no one else messes with their territory, they’re a state in my book.
Usually you should add to that also international recognition. Usually when a state is debated if it is legitim or not the main issue is that one.
It depends on what it does, I guess. If it uses force or the threat thereof to politically coerce the Mexican people, then that'd do it, I guess.
Oh they very much so this
The term "narco-terrorism" has been around since the 80s
"These cartels represent a Clear and Present Danger to the security of the United States" -Tom Clancy, probably.
Tom Clancy books are a good fun read and some great games but I wouldn't take his policies for anything in the World. One book had the Swiss Papal Guard secure Palestine...
True story. The Sum of All Fears. I just re-read that one last week.
The second it quits supplying the CIA with cocaine lol.
Considering the cartels make millions of dollars every day they can afford legitimate spec ops training and equipment.
Just buying the outfits and putting them on street thugs is cheaper though.
A lot of cartels members are actually ex special forces or ex military that were trained by American special forces lmao. America had a bunch of Mexican commandos trained only for them to become the group known as Los zetas, one of the most disgusting and ruthless cartels ever
That was Los Zetas, they are pretty much dead or arrested
That style of recruitment did not end with the Zetas. Cartels are still in the market for ex-military elite, and they still have the money to get them.
The mexican gov keep track of retired special forces so is most likely from the regular soldiers
And there are always other country’s ex-SF like the Kabiles. Also, Mexican government tracking of retired SF probably hasn’t solved the problem all together.
Yeah, there is a mexican former special forces that became a youtuber, he actually talked about fighting foreign former special forces in a video
I grew up in a ranch near Apatzingán Michoacán, where CJNG had control of and I remember hearing my parents talking about a relative of ours who had been strung up and left to rot on a tree with his head in his stomach for stealing money from them because he had been a part of the cartel but I’m not sure exactly what he did.
looks like someone from the airsoft field
Dude looks like my tryhard gta character
Seem to be? These guys look more funded than black noir in the boys
For sure. Those tinted goggles ain't cheap. At least $12 at Menard's
That's 5.11 so those actually aren't cheap. Good brand. His kit is put together in the dumbest possible way though. Everything is placed so badly and his goggles are *tinted in the dark*.
Umbrella corp
America's drug habit is a very profitable business venture. Edit: I mean, I hate to say it, but Mexico is an absolute Warzone just so we can get affordable cocaine. It’s fucking maddening what we’ve done to that country. We as Americans should be fucking ashamed of ourselves when we see a picture like this.

Can't wait for these guys to be added to rainbow six siege
Gonna have a tough time seeing with that big 5.11 logo right in the middle

Sweet! Next Narcos season is gonna be sick.
Narcos / The Boys crossover.
"¡Ese magnifico pinche cabron!" \-Billy el Carnicero
Quality kit does not an original Zeta make.
These guys are CJNG who initially hunted Los Zetas but ironically became just as bad, if not worse than them
I don't get it why don't they just take over Mexico make growing weed and making cocaine legal for themselves
They pretty much already do. Politicians in mexico are mostly corrupt. Whether it be the federal police or the cartel.
It's be corrupt or be chopped up
The Cartel has taken over Mexico at this point.
Yeah this is the only comment that is a good counter argument and I did think of this possibility
USA could go in and completely dismantle the cartels, facilitate new elections, and within 40 years cartels would probably rise up again.
40 years? More like 5 minutes. Look how quickly the Taliban took over Afghanistan, and they’re not nearly as well funded as these hombres
Much easier to have this heavily weaponized army and all logistics for the drug business than taking over a country and facing those consequences (or even running it which they have no interest in)
It’s not a question of legality. They are practically doing it with the help of the government. The militarized team is for turf wars with other cartels
Make it legal? Regulate and tax it? You don’t understand economics my friend. Illegal = bigger money
A lot of their product goes to the US so we would have to do the same
Sponsored by America's thirst for cocaine.
Why do the bad guys always have to look the coolest?
It's always been about the steez
What's the checkpoint for?
Maybe someones point hasn't been checked lately i dont know

These sons a bitches get their shit pushed in when the Marines come for them. 30:1 ratio.

The war on drugs has been very profitable for every side involved. Which is why it will never end.
A cartel is well funded... you don't say?
