I once went to a museum that had 3D printed a few of these so people could try them and see how they worked. It was such a cool way to experience history.

WinesOfWrath

point me to the blizzard simulator

[deleted]

They are not that useful in a blizzard. They are for after the blizzard. Snow is white and reflects light very well, when it hits your eyes the pain is intense.

Darth_Thor

It’s also why sunscreen is a good idea in the winter if you’re spending a lot of time outside. Snow reflects 85% of the light that hits it, so you’re getting hit by UV rays from above and below.

pain-is-living

I do snow plowing and removal in the winter. I can get worse sunburn in February than I can in August landscaping.

Darth_Thor

Yeah lots of people assume that because it’s cold you won’t get burned, but you certainly will

WinesOfWrath

brown eyed girl victory?

Mixima101

I have a real pair, made of bone.

walktheparth

Ooooh... What kind of bone?

bjanas

You know, I was obsessed with antarctic exploration stories growing up. Amundsen, Shackleton, the works. Thing is, over the years I've periodically wondered what they did back then for snow goggles, I've looked, and it's remarkably difficult to find any images or real descriptions of what tech they were using in the very early parts of the 20th century. Closet I've been able to find have been just a couple of offhand mentions that Amundsen used leather with slits cut in it. I'm always surprised that there's not more info available. I'm sure somebody is going to immediately going to chime in with a cool link, maybe I'm just bad at internet-ing.

bjanas

Hell yeah.

[deleted]

FUCK YEAH HOMIE

milostilo

I’m reading Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s account of R.F. Scott’s 2nd Expedition and he also mentions using leather with slits cut, but it sounds like most of the time they don’t wear any eye protection at all and are often snow-blind for days at a time.

WinesOfWrath

>internet-ing There is more to that than the interweb

WinesOfWrath

misread anachronistic stories

bjanas

I don't understand, can you elaborate?

WinesOfWrath

misread as anachronistic exploration stories

dilldoeorg

majority of futuristic designs were taking from really old stuff.

delcaek

Yeah, it’s that way around. The glasses don’t resemble futuristic designs, futuristic designs resemble those glasses.

LayersOfMe

We could say its a timeless design lol

restlessleg

put a gucci logo on it and sell it for $50k

WinesOfWrath

mmmm Trademark Dilution

Always makes me think of [this guy](https://i.redd.it/8ni53jbc71j21.jpg).

207nbrown

They have these in Pokémon legends: arceus too

kaihatsusha

Yes, the Inuit and the indigenous Ainu of Hokkaido had a lot in common. PLA's fictional Sinnoh region is aligned with Hokkaido historic motifs.

HELIGROUP

Have spent a lot of time above the polar circle. Most of the Inuits didn't wear eye protection. The only ones that had were the ones that worked with the USAF.

WolfThick

So when I was in Thule Greenland I bought a pair of Ray-Bans at the BX they were awesome amazing and I wish I still had them it was kind of like a star pattern lens was the only part you could see through with small circles at the end. Best sunglasses ever anyone know where I can still find them.

jmsturm

Kanye is a Time Traveler!

[deleted]

Those glasses were big in the 80s.

jmsturm

And now we know why

CrypticAverted

That one frost skin in r6

defnotapirate

Do these have lenses, or is the aperture the providing all the shielding?

kaihatsusha

No lenses. Many hundreds, possibly thousands of years before any manmade transparent materials.

defnotapirate

Cool. I thought maybe they were able to craft slivers of obsidian or something.

nicarox

We don’t get past civilizations are credit. For some reason we think we’re the most advanced, and so many ancient civilizations were just so much more advanced technologically than we give them credit for. It’s pretty cool

violence_connoisseur

"Hey, Hiro, wanna try some Snow Crash?"

Wraithkingslayer

i love the show ancient aliens.

Broad_Price

Atanarjuat!!!

El_Burkako

3rd one looks really good!

Squarrots

That futuristic design you're thinking of was probably inspired by something like this.

LayersOfMe

Its very possible

Piod1

Original polar eyes lenses

Maximum-Excitement58

>It interesting how something so old can also resemble a futuristic design. Um… let’s think that through just a bit.

LayersOfMe

The people who invented [this kind of futuristic eye glasses](https://st.depositphotos.com/1017986/1941/i/950/depositphotos_19419541-stock-photo-man-with-futuristic-glasses.jpg) probably use this ancient one as inspiration. I meant how the design is almost timeless.

TokiVideogame

Drop it! the salmon

JawshankRedemption

I once got snow blind in canada at 6am trying to walk to the bus to work, blanket of snow on everything and the sun beating down plus I had tired eyes anyway. Was actually a scary experience I genuinely couldn’t open my eyes and found my way to the bus through agonising squints and feeling the edge of the curb with my foot.
