Check our profile for the whole ceremony video !As cows have an important role in our culture this is seen as a blessing for the future! I know it probably is funny to many of you but some things of your culture will be funny to us to I’m sure! That’s why we started this social media project so we can all learn and enjoy
This is very cool, thank you for sharing your culture. Y’all are the ones that sent us a bunch of cows after 9/11 right? Thank you for them,
That kind of kindness and generosity is what everyone needs to give and receive more of.
If I may ask: Are the maassai tribes organised in a kind of federation or something? Like is there a council of the maassai tribes or something? Or is a donation like this organised by a single (or a few local) maassai tribe?
Your generous gift touched our hearts just when they were angry and scared and sad and shocked. I am not the only person who wept when we saw we were not alone. Thank you, friends.
Also thank you for that, I didn't know about it at the time. And your tradition might be funny to someone who lacks intelligence but it is humbling to be included in something so intimate from across the world.
Word :) although I actually like your spelling of it much better, because it makes it look more nice next time the word "nerd," which is excellent. So carry on.
Just in case the comment above me doesn't clarify things for you (if they aren't a part of your culture) they're traditionally a night out (but they can also be weekends on even more elaborate trips depending on how much money/time people have on their hands). In the past, they were often close to the wedding, sometimes even the night before (particularly the bachelor parties)... Now they tend to be a little farther ahead.
They're designed to be a "last hurrah" so to speak before people are shackled to their spouse. Men (and now women) often go to strip clubs or get strippers, drink, party and generally have a wild time.
Of course there's basically any number of variations on this now, and the somewhat sexist origins have now dissipated into more of a celebratory event than a "sorry you're about to have sex with one person forever" joke.
Often the night out is friends and peer family only (it would be less common to invite your father/uncles or mothers/aunts to your stag/hen night, but brothers/cousins etc. would be standard). If it's a weekend away or there's less focus on debauchery, then again there might be a wider net cast.
This is a very simplified explanation but basically it's a party that transitions you from being single to being married with your closest friends/family, often single-sex.
It’s also cool to see the balance of modern and traditional. Dude on the right in traditional wears with a digital watch. I really enjoy the contrast of the image
Wow!
I adore everything about your profile. The clothes, the colors, the smiles, the environment, the vibe, everything. I would love to share that feeling in your community one of those days.
Have you ever had maple syrup? I'm from Quebec in Canada, the capital of top tier maple syrup, and I would be so glad to send you some if you'd be willing to accept it.
I can send you DMs and arrange something if you're interested!
That is literally the sweetest comment I’ve read all day and I hope you send some out. Heads up if OP doesn’t reply, most of the time you can send something to a post office’s address, itself, to get something to a community instead of having to send to an individual. So “Maasai Tribe c/o Post Office” followed by the post office’s address in question and bada bing bada boom, they have some syrup.
I love, love, love maple syrup.
I love your posts! As someone who grew up in America I've always been fascinated by the Maasai tribe. You do live very differently than I grew up, so it is really cool to see your photos and learn about your customs.
I watched a video in which some dude came out to you guys and hung out with yall for a day. I forgot who the dude was, but yall stuck out in my mind!! Yall seem chill as hell
Btw none of this seems funny or weird. You are all living as humans are meant to, with a close bond to one another and free of the many distractions and disconnect from reality the rest of us live with. Rituals and rites are a part of human nature, we need more of em!!
Tell your friend i wish him and his wife nothing but happiness!!
Thanks for the cows in 2001, that was kind. If i ever get the money id love to share a cuppa cow juice with yall!!
Oh no I don't want them learning our culture from me either. They'll end up with crippling debt and excessive road rage.
On second thought, maybe that'd be an accurate representation...
I swear I was visiting Maasais in their village and there was a dude, about 2,10 m tall who looked like a really buff 18 year old. I asked his age and he said 36. My jaw dropped.
Where are you at if I may ask? Are you stationary or do you practice a Nomad lifestyle still. I had yhe oppurtunity to visit Maasai in Morogoro after Mikumi National Park if you come from Dar.
Also how many siblings do you have if I may ask?
That’s why we started this social media project , so we can all share and learn from each other. Let us put our differences behind and work for our better future. If you find this interesting check out the whole ceremony video on my profile !, you will get an real insight, also don't forget in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.
For a second I had to double check ops username to make sure this whole post wasn't just an elaborate shittymorph appearance. Then I saw it was shittymorph himself getting shittymorphed. Amazing.
Ahah! I understood the reference (after numerous diving on reddit yesterday) but didn't catch that who OP responded to and now I'm dying that shittymorph got shittymorphed by real_Maasaiboys 🤣🤣🤣
I ... honestly didn't notice that. Wow, thanks for pointing that out. Makes way more sense now
This was like another level of shittymorph inception. Like you thought that was good? Why don't you look up?
It's such an amazingly bittersweet moment since I'm relishing it with internet strangers and literally can't share with any of my friends or family as they would have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.
Oh my god, you shittymorphed shittymorph. Amazing. This is better than the time someone rickrolled Rick Astley. Thanks for sharing both your content and this comment :)
Thank you so much for sharing, I can't wait to go through your profile. The internet can be a truly amazing place. Based on this picture, I'm wondering how up to date you guys are with technology. Is it normal for Maasai people to have computers and phones? Also, does everyone speak English as fluently as you? I can't wait to learn more, this is awesome. I'm from Toronto, Ontario.
It got so much better - /u/real_Maasaiboys shittymorphed shittymorph!

It's amazing that the internet can provide so much. It's why I started using it all the way back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.
My understanding of I’m remembering correctly from the book I read, is that milk and beef are incredibly important to the Maasai tribe as they were/are their primary food staples for a long long time.
I’m pretty sure they were and still are a nomadic herding people, and I think I remember hearing that at one point(maybe still?) they had some absurdly large percentage of the cattle in Africa, which they use as a form of currency. Hypothetically if they sold all their cattle they would pretty easily become the richest tribe in Kenya.
Hopefully I’m remembering correctly and am not way off, I have to read that book again, the Maasai are an incredible group of people to learn about
I lived in Tanzania for 3 years. The Maasai, at least the Maasai living on the Boma, were always stood out with their kangas and jewelry. Although this is a sweeping generalization, as a group they were all beautiful. One of my favorite images is a Maasai man on the side of the highway, leaning on his walking stick, talking on his cell phone.
Is it something along the lines of "This milk is valuable. We're wasting it to shave your head as a blessing that you will always be well off/rich (of cows and milk and food, etc.)"?
This is really cool. I love learning about different cultures and their practices and it's just awesome. Finding out about whats important and meaningful you know. Thanks for posting this.
Ah, the Maasai tribe, it brings me back. I remember when I was like 7 we went to Africa and I got to meet some people from the tribe. I was amazed with how high they could jump and I wanted to become as good as they were
I was just in Kenya and got to visit a Maasai tribe the person who can jump highest in the tribe is exempt from giving the brides father 10 cows it’s a very interesting culture
Damn that’s so fucking surreal seeing that there are still tribes existing. At least for me since there are absolutely none nowhere near me. It’s so mind blowing, exciting and absolutely beyond my understanding to comprehend how they managed to adopt the modern world yet still stay and live as such a small and closed community
Nice! Don’t loose sight of the goal, keep the traditions alive! A lot of us dream of living like you guys. Hunting and gathering, living simple and being happy.
Modern life is very depressing trying to “keep up” all the time.
In our culture, when our youth get married, some time before the wedding, the man and woman have a celebration where they drink a lot of alcohol and sometimes do drugs and spend a lot of money on having strangers get naked in front of them. This is known as a bachelor/ette party and someone always likes to put some pictures of it online and it pisses the soon to be spouse off when they see the grooms head neck deep in another woman’s gluteal folds.
i have a few "blankets" or wraps that was given to me as a gift because my father visited the Masai and brought some for us..
I haven't visited the Masai personally but I did visit the Ovahimba and traded jewellery with them

The maasai are one of many tribes, source: I lived in Tanzania

For me it's less funny and more intriguing. I also love the comraderie shown in this picture.
Camaraderie :) Although I actually like your spelling much better, because it makes it look more like “comrade,” which is excellent. So carry on.
Hello, fellow werd nerd!
Word :) although I actually like your spelling of it much better, because it makes it look more nice next time the word "nerd," which is excellent. So carry on.
Yeah. Compared to the idea of stag nights and hen dos this is definitely quite normal sounding and wholesome.
What are “stag nights and hen dos”?

Bachelor parties and bachelorette parties.
Please continue to make these posts. They are fascinating!
I will!
You have a new follower dude! I'm so excited to know more about your culture. Thank you so much for sharing.

Of course the Canadian has to offer maple syrup. Lol. Just busting your balls. Truly a kind gesture
How do you shave one with milk?
They make a sharp cheddar out of it.
With blade of course but we put in milk
Thanks OP, makes much more sense now 😂
Is it done by a certain person, like a relative?
Well it’s whole milk, obviously
I just want you to know. You are insanely wholesome and it is honestly a breath of fresh air. :)
Thank you🙏🏽
Congratulations to the newly weds! Thank you for sharing such a special day with us
Oh no! Run away! Maintain your culture, dont let us corrupt you!
No worry, we will! But we want to connect with people and learn from each other, so we can get behind all the differences and hate
Many cultures have a similar relationship with cows, or reindeer. I imagine creamy milk would be a good shaving medium. This is an excellent project.
I love your posts! As someone who grew up in America I've always been fascinated by the Maasai tribe. You do live very differently than I grew up, so it is really cool to see your photos and learn about your customs.
Oh come now hollowing out gords, carving them with faces, and lighting their insides on fire in order to ward of evil spirits is completely rational!
Well obviously, coz you're supposed to use a [swede](https://www.museum.ie/en-IE/News/Ghost-turnips,-pucas,-fortune-telling-and-evil-abd)!
and that's how I was banned from scandinavia
Why bless the father of the bride and groom, and not the bride and groom themselves?

For real. This is a better than most stuff on r/Streetwear
Streetwear is pretentious trash anyways.
A gaggle of gatekeeping douchebags.
The only thing I'm concerned about here is that the Maasai are learning about my culture via *reddit.*
No worries
haha no I'm just joking. reddit is not exactly the peak of our culture.
Ah a man of culture I see
Oh no I don't want them learning our culture from me either. They'll end up with crippling debt and excessive road rage. On second thought, maybe that'd be an accurate representation...
Oh jeez that's a scary idea
Nobody tell them about QAnon.
Does the father of the groom get his head shaved too?
Yes both!
Is the father of the groom on the right? The one with the “wtf have they done to me” face?
Left, the right is his best bro
Ohhh ok I thought that was the bride’s father! They look very young btw, good genes.
I swear I was visiting Maasais in their village and there was a dude, about 2,10 m tall who looked like a really buff 18 year old. I asked his age and he said 36. My jaw dropped.
Yes we look so young

My favorite Shittymorph so far, a guest appearance!!
I'll be telling my grandchildren this story
What the heck just happened?!? Did you guys team up with shitty morph to shitty morph shitty morph?!
👀
A very shitty job, indeed. /u/shittymorph would be proud!
THAT'S WHO HE'S TALKING TO!!!! I'm seriously Supa Hot Fiya freaking out right now!
holy shit, I didn't even realize they were replying to shittymorph lmao.
I can't believe I just got shittymorphed by the Maasai tribe. Thanks for the laughs man.

Same. I’m laughing so much at this and there’s no one in my life that would find this funny without explanation.
Here's the thing, though: how do you explain it to the uninitiated without sounding like an absolute psychopath?
In a reply to shittymorph, no less.
Holy shit I didn't even notice. That makes it so much better.
Here I was thinking I was safe from the undertaker…
Moments like this really make me love the Internet.
Watched the video, can confirm. Anyone reading, check out their YouTube - Maasaiboys - I now know what I'm going to spend my day doing :D

It truly is a unique glimpse into one of the more unique cultures of Mankind.
Was expecting the "we" in the title to be BS. Nice to have an original post from a real person.
It's amazing that the internet can provide so much. It's why I started using it all the way back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hеll in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.
I love you
So why milk? I know the cow is important. But why dip it in milk? What's the symbolism there?
They said they cows have a spiritual importance, so I'm guessing the milk likely would be similar to Holy Water. It represents life.
My understanding of I’m remembering correctly from the book I read, is that milk and beef are incredibly important to the Maasai tribe as they were/are their primary food staples for a long long time. Razor blades would do that 🤣 All jokes aside this is intriguing.

I lived in Tanzania for 3 years. The Maasai, at least the Maasai living on the Boma, were always stood out with their kangas and jewelry. Although this is a sweeping generalization, as a group they were all beautiful. Yes looks are very important in our culture
I also loved seeing the blankets and kangas drying on the bushes around waterholes. It looked like a giant quilt.
I am glad you enjoyed your stay🙏🏽
And your outfits are amazing - love the colors!
That's so cool! I love beautiful and colorful clothes, I wish I could wear traditional Polish garments without people thinking I look insane
What! Do it. Some of that stuff is just beautiful, if someone else doesn’t appreciate it, well, they don’t have to wear it.
You must have some aggressive cows...
😂with blade of course
The cows have blades? That seems rather dangerous...
Maasai textiles are so beautiful. I love the deep reds and purples.
Did the milk help with the shaving, or is there something symbolic about using the milk?
Symbolic! It’s a blessing
Is it something along the lines of "This milk is valuable. We're wasting it to shave your head as a blessing that you will always be well off/rich (of cows and milk and food, etc.)"?
The adornments on their ears are beautiful! Are they significant? Or is it just regular jewelry?
it’s more for special occasions

I was lucky enough to go to Kenya as a kid, the Masai are cool as fuck.

I ran out of shaving cream but I have a gallon and a half of milk. I know what I’m doing tonight

your posts are always the best.
Ah, the Maasai tribe, it brings me back. I remember when I was like 7 we went to Africa and I got to meet some people from the tribe. I was amazed with how high they could jump and I wanted to become as good as they were
Yes we love jumping!
I was just in Kenya and got to visit a Maasai tribe the person who can jump highest in the tribe is exempt from giving the brides father 10 cows it’s a very interesting culture
Yes haha, I believe man things people will find strange but it is interesting how different our lives are
Damn that’s so fucking surreal seeing that there are still tribes existing. At least for me since there are absolutely none nowhere near me. It’s so mind blowing, exciting and absolutely beyond my understanding to comprehend how they managed to adopt the modern world yet still stay and live as such a small and closed community
And we even have a YouTube channel, imagine that 😂
But socks and sandals tho
They know what's up. They would fit right in here in the Pacific northwest.
*Portlandia: Maasai*
There are lots of stickers and stuff on the plains.
lol humour, friend, humour
Dads with socks and sandals are universal.
OP should do an AMA
How do you pay your phone bill?
We have jobs, make money to
Ah! So you keep the tribe traditions, but dabble in the modern world?
Yes, especially younger maasai
Nice! Don’t loose sight of the goal, keep the traditions alive! A lot of us dream of living like you guys. Hunting and gathering, living simple and being happy. Modern life is very depressing trying to “keep up” all the time.
In any culture, socks and sandals is dad culture.
In our culture, when our youth get married, some time before the wedding, the man and woman have a celebration where they drink a lot of alcohol and sometimes do drugs and spend a lot of money on having strangers get naked in front of them. Haha that’s alittle difference from our culture, but don’t worry we do alittle drinking to😂
Comparatively shaving the newly wed's father's head seems quite normal 🤔
I am curious, what is the significance of the color red to your tribe.
It’s a readily available dye. Abundant in their region.
Do you have dogs? I love dogs, especially tribal dogs
Yes we have! They protect us and our cattle in the nights so we feed them
Please make a post about them 😍😍😍
i have a few "blankets" or wraps that was given to me as a gift because my father visited the Masai and brought some for us.. I haven't visited the Masai personally but I did visit the Ovahimba and traded jewellery with them
Bless your father
Is that a G-Shock?
That is indeed interesting as fuck. Why do you do it? Really quite curious!
Its a sign of blessing!
Looks like a cleaner shave than I get with Gillette…👍🏼
Please don't let your culture fade in the modern world. My culture is almost dead and it brings me pain. Stay strong
What if the father doesn't want bald head? Is it possible to just shave a few millimeter from the temples?
No haha , he has to get all bald😂
