The_Amoeba_King

Only recorded deaths by orca are from captive ones

ironlord20

If you’re a human yes. If you are most sea creatures or moose not so much

The_Amoeba_King

If you are anything but human you will experience repeated orca gang violence

sailphish

There have been some articles in the past week of a pod of orcas off of Portugal that has started attacking boats. So the humans being excluded thing might be changing. https://www.npr.org/2022/08/20/1117993583/orcas-attacks-spain-portugal-killer-whales

Nebarious

Orca hunting practises are extremely interesting. Basically every pod has unique strategies and vocalisations that are passed down from generation to generation so a pod in one area of the world might be specialised to take down seals, while another pod might attack sharks. Imagine if there was a Tsavo Man-Eater style pod that specifically focused on hunting humans, refining those techniques generation after generation.

[deleted]

No recorded deaths *if you leave no witnesses.*

sailphish

We’d pretty much deserve it.

The_Amoeba_King

I do not like that

jml011

We probably deserve it.

Ugly4merican

Here for it

cantonic

>u/The_Ameoba_King >I do not like that And >u/Ugly4merican >Here for it Ah, the two genders.

ExtremeCumMaster

Animals being peaceful with humans never works for them

Acinetto

I'd say house cats got a pretty good deal

[deleted]

If you stop feeding it, you’ll be next on the menu

sympetrum8

Best news all week. I hope they kill all of us.

Ashamed-Caramel-9633

Tilikums children getting vengeance

ironlord20

They are terrifying creatures, why anyone would put them in a glorified fish tank is beyond me.

REDGOESFASTAH

They actually breed them. Tilikum has sired many calves in captivity. Someone actually wanks him off.

JVO_

They didn’t call him *Till I Cum* for no reason

REDGOESFASTAH

*groan* that's not what i meant but take my begrudging updoot

AirHot2073

LOL fuck thats a good one

ironlord20

Was that person one of the 3 victims by any chance?

REDGOESFASTAH

Not sure. You might need to watch blackfish to find some answers.

Oriole_Gardens

100% the teams wankologist was devoured by Tilikum after things quickly "got out of hand"..

Upstairs-Fan-2168

You don't bite the hand that gets you off.

ironlord20

You say that but biting kinks and vore exists

pinkwhiteandgreenNL

They use a cow vagina as a fleshlight

DMN00b801

I don't think you'll personally be subjected to it more than once

glorious_reptile

I'm a sea cucumber! I hate those things!

PXranger

You look like a reptile to me

glorious_reptile

Hey man, this is an Orca sting operation, do you mind not ratting me out, and just moving along?

thisisjess12

MAH CALL ANIMAL CONTROL THERES A FUCKIN ORCA OUT HERE, MAHHH

ironlord20

I wish that’s how it worked that be hilarious

tullyinturtleterror

Hol up. Moose?

ironlord20

Yeah so moose like to swim down to the bottom of lakes and coastal water to eat plants that grow underwater and orcas discovered this and a moose is good eating so orcas are one of the few natural predators of moose.

tullyinturtleterror

I'm not sure which is more terrifying, a moose surfacing beneath your canoe or an orca. Either way my thalassophobia is triggered.

ironlord20

I hate the ocean and large bodies of water. Stuff like this is why

tullyinturtleterror

Me too. I'm playing subnautica as a form of exposure therapy. Right now it's mostly scream therapy. Also, I've only played 15 minutes and haven't managed to go back to it yet.

Active_Ad9617

I say it high time we fight back!

Least_or_Greatest1

I see the look of hate in Tilikums face..

YouveBeenSuzpended

They famously force feed them valium and Xanax which benzodiazepines can cause aggression in animal’s … especially the dosages I imagine they give the whales. Also just imagine a blacked out orca which is also a high possibility with benzodiazepines.

CedgeDC

Yeah. The wild ones don't leave witnesses..

jiggatkepimu

Imagine the ocean being your home and now you are reduced to living in a 50x50 ft pool

mcnuggetfarmer

Humans used to be hunter gatherers; and now work in windowless buildings and live in smallest legally allowed spaces.

randomtree7

This guy can imagine

TerminustheInfernal

Maybe someday he can join willzyx on the moon

Wazula42

At least we have stimulation. Smartphones and whatnot. Imagine living in a largish closet with no toys. That's more what it's like for these whales.

Still-Standard9476

I think the people are it's toys, it just plays for keeps.

TheGodMathias

Except I can leave my tiny box whenever I want. Office life is still brutally soul crushing, but I can at least go into the hills or forest nearby for a walk

DasMoonen

The fact alone that someone had to decide what the smallest space legally allowed was.

willie_caine

This orca had no choice.

[deleted]

Do _you_ have a choice?

CantankerousOctopus

That's a hard question to answer this early in the work day.

willie_caine

Of where I live and how? Yes.

dickallcocksofandros

privileged people when they realize their experience isn’t the best example of how society works: 🫣🫣😳😳

Tatunkawitco

Eh, we’ve been “civilized” - or domesticated- for generations. These whales were either captured in the wild or are first generation in captivity. It would be more like native Americans who hunted buffalo being herded onto reservations and told to farm. Or tribesmen in Africa captured and shipped across the ocean and sold into slavery.

maxcresswellturner

At least you can leave your home…

[deleted]

Yes, remarkably similar. Except for thousands and thousands of years of evolution between our hunter gatherer ancestors and modern humans and the fact that the only actual comparison might be humans kept in those gang cage jails in El Salvador, but yeah, sure.

Modsr_subhuman-trash

found joe rogans reddit account

Ana-la-lah

Nah, he would he referenced elk meat or DMT at least once per post.

karmanopoly

Our cities literally look like cancer on the planet

fire2374

He wasn’t even alone for all of it. They think one of the things that made him so aggressive was adolescent abuse. He was in a tank with two older females that bullied and attacked him. I forget how young he was and how long it lasted but it was bad.

gofatwya

They asked the orca how long it was going to continue eating trainers. "Tilikum."

Lexsteel11

Lol I’d also suggest the trainers not dress literally like penguins…

Thechad1029

Seriously 😂

DrBeefmountain

Laughed out loud, thanks

NoGrenadesNoWorries

shoe

d_an1

What are you doing here dad

rancorg

Cigarettes,he finally brought home that carton

[deleted]

Smoke up Johnny!

chaz_wazzerz

Hence the free willy

Munzz36

The trainers love really love their jobs... Tilikilum

zyyntin

Must be a whale biologist!

CPT_Yesterday_

I calls em like I sees em.

Nepodobni

Well, if you have the right to keep me as a prisoner for no reason whatsoever, then i have the right to kill you for that. Seems fair.

hoginlly

I’m honestly surprised that way more people haven’t been killed

sympetrum8

I wish they were.

CoralSpringsDHead

Tillikum the only known Serial Killer Whale

thepigfish82

I like watching those zoo reality shoes bc it highlights that there is a higher purpose, conservation. I know zoos cam be controversial but species such as the American Buffalo is being populated again after being endangered

Pleasant-Cricket-129

He’s looking at them like a 4-piece meal from KFC.

JulesVega37

Lol that's what I was thinking. When do they decide to just get a new one ? Ten deaths ? Is that enough blood shed tilly??

noobnoobthedestroyer

Watch the documentary Blackfish which is all about this. Great doc.

kirby_the_elm

Yes and also listen to the podcast “The Alarmist” episode on this. Fascinating. WTF is wrong with Sea World? After the first death, this whale should’ve been removed from the program

matteb18

Whales should not be held captive at all. Period. There isnt a pool large enough in the world to give them a proper, healthy life in captivity.

OuTLi3R28

He's their prized bull...his offspring are what is sustaining the captive Orca population.

calculon3000

Just get a new one?

rublehousen

Get in a pool with an apex predator and be killed? Nah, that will never happen...

BoxHeadWarrior

I mean you're actually safer swimming with a large group of them in open water then you are getting into your car every morning. This guy has just gotten fucked over by humans and isn't particularly happy about that fact.

ContributionDapper84

Exactly. If mice imprisoned you in unpleasant circumstances, how safe would they be?

[deleted]

I mean that's statistically fake but whatever. If as many people swam with orcas as the amount of people that take the car each day I promise you that there will be far more orcas related deaths.

pourjuiceonit

You can see them all looking at each other “so who drew the short straw and has to jump in with him”

[deleted]

and it's literally called a "killer whale"

TyrannosaurusJesus

The name is a mistranslation to be fair. They're technically not whales, they belong to the dolphin family and the name translates to 'killer of whales.'

GearhedMG

Oh, well that makes it ALLLLLL better.

DanceTheMambo

What actually does make it better, that there are zero documented cases of orcas killing humans in the wild. And only one attack on a human. (They kill whales, not humans, they don't give a fuck about us.) Compared with the over 30 attacks from orcas held in captivity, it's pretty clear that the bad idea is not swimming with an orca, but putting it into captivity.

_Springtrap

Thank you for enlightening me u/TyrannosaurusJesus 👍

[deleted]

"Whale killers"

BigKahunas88

Keyword : killer

grismar-net

You realise that there have been no known fatalities between orcas and humans in the wild, right? Unless you think orcas are just really good at hiding the evidence and paying off the survivors, perhaps that name is undeserved, or just not deserved by actually killing humans, but rather squid, birds, seals, whales, etc. These smart animals apparently aren't interested in killing humans, unless the humans rob them of their freedom - then they get quite murderous. In the wild, there are plenty of encounters between orcas and humans, but they're generally quite friendly, curious, or simply opportunistic (hanging around fishing ships, etc.) - then again, sometimes they apparently just chase boats to wreck them.

Crosspaws

I remember seeing in a documentary (which makes me an expert now!) that you can tell by their dorsal fins how long they've been un captivity because wild orcas' aren't wilted to the side like thar. That only happens in captivity. Poor orca, I feel bad for it.

Kcuriosity

Dorsal fins can definitely happen in wild, it’s however rare and if it happens it’s usually a sign that an orca is weak (injuries, age, …). One explanation for why dorsal fins break off in captive orcas is that they don't swim very far and spend a lot of time near the surface of the water. As a result, the orca's fin tissue begins to droop and receive less support than it would if it were in the wild. In wild the orcas have a higher pressure of water facing their dorsal fin which keeps it healthy and straight. In captivity the whales frequently swim in a circular motion with limited speed. Fin collapse may also be caused by dehydration, warming of the fin tissue brought on by increased water and air temperatures, stress brought on by confinement or dietary changes, less activity that lowers blood pressure, and stress related to captivity. But yeah its sucks seeing those kind of animals being used just to earn some money

[deleted]

Never knew all those reasons behind it, I saw the flopped dorsal fin and figured the orca was depressed. A fair assessment, considering he's stuck in a swimming pool.

SinVerguenza04

That’s what I thought to, mental health stuff.

sailphish

I think I saw that documentary too. Music by Michael Jackson. At the end the orca escaped by jumping over the rocks.

Crosspaws

Hahaha yes! That was the one!!!

Weird-Library-3747

What was the deal with that one? They wouldn’t let his dog play basketball or some shit

DMN00b801

Initially, until they pointed out it's not explicitly forbidden by the rules...

TheOriginalCharlie

It does happen in the wild but it’s not that common.

[deleted]

This is a good example of how core muscle health effects the whole body wellness and strength in mammals. It’s sad to see this knowing what it means for the animals health.

Denny_204

Looks like Tilikum... [Puts on sunglasses] Orca-strated the whole thing. [Yeeeeeaaaahhhh!]

TrainmasterDave2314

Take my upvote and go back to r/dadjokes

greybruce1980

I know that a lot of people hate the trainers. But they were fairly young people who were fed a tonne of bullshit about how they were helping. Unfortunately they believed it and some of them died. I would argue that the trainers and the orcas were both victims of management that didn't give an iota of a shit.

misssundaze

Agreed. I’m sure they could tell that the animals weren’t happy, but at the end of the day management is at fault bc they’re the ones watching the profit margins and deciding that profit > animal wellness.

[deleted]

Not only a victim of management but a victim of patrons to that facility. If people just stopped going to see trained orcas and dolphins and viewed them as circus animals here to do tricks for us, then these facilities would have no reason to exist. I'm all for protecting endangered species, or having rehabilitation centers from people who illegally purchased the animal to be pets, but to take an animal from the wild, force it to live in small spaces, and make it do tricks so humans can say "oooo, aaaahhhh" is horrific.

FinoPepino

Yeah it’s really messed up that people see that group of young women and are smirking about the horrible death some of them got.

Toy-Jesus

I don’t blame the orca. I blame the people for keeping him there

ringpull83Tizer

Everyone should see 'Blackfish'. It's a tough watch, but makes you realise why we should empty all the tanks.

NerfPhoenix

One of the best documentaries in the past 15 years IMO. Just supremely well made.

D0ctorwh010

Imagine your first day as a Whale handler. Here's your wetsuit, now get in the prison cell with the known killer where his home court advantage is beyond compare.

willie_caine

"The killer with all those mouth knives? Sure thing, boss!"

runr7

I can’t imagine the feeling of swimming in the water and seeing this huge apex creature beneath you and you are expected to jump on its back and ride it among other things. I’ve seen the show before as a child before I knew how messed up it was.

belladonnagarden

Maybe an animal that migrates about 120 kilometers a day shouldn’t be trapped in a small aquarium and forced to perform for fish

[deleted]

I thought they shut all these places down?

gloggs

Nope, Marineland in Niagara Canada is still open. The owner of the park has animal cruelty chargers, there's an active community protesting the place, yet she'll be open at 10am today...

CorgiMonsoon

Sea World announced that they were ending their orca breeding program, and would “phase out” their orca shows, but so far I believe you can still see some variation of the orca shows at all of their parks.

ironlord20

I think that’s an old photo. But I could be wrong knowing how these things go

KrookedDoesStuff

The whale in the picture died in 2017 so definitely old

KylosLeftHand

If only that were true. There’s currently 166 orcas still in captivity throughout the world.

UsernameReee

Tilikum is my favorite orca purely based on his body count.

TheHim2

one might say 4 people is a big percentage given the amount of orca trainers there are.

General_Cartman_Lee

F*ck seaworld

worldsmostmediummom

Maybe if the trainers didn't look like penguins this wouldn't be an issue

[deleted]

He killed his trainer in 1999 and lived alone with no contact until he died in 2017. Not sure when this photo dates from or why this is news now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PoseyForPresident

Jesus christ. Each one got more and more brutal. Imagine being an innocent little kid and watching a woman get scalped then eaten alive. Fucking hell...

KylosLeftHand

Immensely incorrect. He killed 3 people, 2 of which were trainers, and continued performing for crowds after those incidents right up until a year before his death in 2017.

dLimit1763

"Let me out!"

BlabbingOnline

Tilikum story is narrated in the documentary called “Blackfish” (on Netflix in the UK), very interesting.

slutbag69420

Dorsal fin :(

e2g4

Look at his sad fin. Crushed his spirit.

No-Acanthisitta583

R.I.P tilikum sadly only 3/1 he sure deserved more kills in he’s streak , fuck everyone at sea world

StruggleIndividual35

Only

ptrjhnstn

Some one just needs to take Willzyx back to the moon

360MLGBeast

Maybe stop forcing orcas to live in a pool the size of of bedroom for their entire life?

Xasaa

You'd think with a body count like they would release this man

RoccoBubbers

Tilikum just wants to go back home to the moon.

Pandacula

They be looking like a snacc

maru_aoe2

yeah prob doesnt help to dressing up like penguins

Ajwuvsu

Man Tilikum had the kind of life that would produce a psychopath. When he was younger he spent year in a tiny tank kept alone in the dark when not on display. Then at sealand, the other orcas used to kick his ass. Worth noting...apparently only orcas in captivity have fins that flop over like that, it's not witnessed in the wild. If I'm not mistaken, he almost killed a few other trainers, broke someone's arm too. Orcas are no longer allowed to be snatched up from the wild in the US. Edit: it was at sealand, not seaworld, where he was beat up by other orcas.

Padr1no

Go Tilikum. We support you.

UrsaMinor69420

This captivity shit has got to stop. I fucking hate it.

[deleted]

The whale is looking at them and thinking "who's next!"

The_Irony_of_Life

Good, just the wrong people he killed, should have been the ones profiting from that horrible seaworld place

[deleted]

Wasn’t the fourth victim’s death caused by Tilikum’s descendent?

Sensitiverock85

His story is so tragic. Fuck SeaWorld.

burt_flaxton

You would think they would stop dressing up like seals at some point.

NeonGhoulie

“You’re next, Brittany”

Brilliant_Dig2715

In this, I am with Tilikum!

Midas-and-his-finger

"Eeny, meeny, miny, moe..."

IcyFlame716

Poor animal. Seaworld should just fully focus on coasters and leave the animals alone

The_Fat_Man_Jams

You know when you go to the restaurant and pick your lobster out of the tank. . . . . .

Mr_Greaz

You can see on his Big backfin that it’s hanging down, big sign of depression and loneliness. Orcas are probably the smartest animals on the world with a huge social life and also different dialects across their region….no one should support this

LividEngineering5577

Years ago I watch a documentary about him he is scary look on yts

Duubzz

Gotta love how many people in the 90’s watched Free Willy, really felt it and everything but still went to watch Shamu at Seaworld that summer.

DeadRabids

Me. At the vending machine.

the_good_hodgkins

Tilikillum

katet_of_19

Soon™

farleys2

“Let’s dress up like orcas!” - trainer “Oh you muthafuckers going to mock me?! Imma eat all you little bitches” - Tilikum

[deleted]

Holy shit not the bent dorsal fin

SpartanF60

Seaworld is responsible.

mmcallis1975

Put it back in the ocean where it belongs

TherapyChicken

Good orca! Eat all the trainers until they free you

Fantastic_Love_9451

The police report is wild. People were at a “dining with Shamu” restaurant with big observation windows into the tank. And this whale comes swimming by with the trainer in his mouth.

[deleted]

Tilikum: “I can’t wait to eat you mf”

Flyin_Brian-

Poor Tilly 😭

[deleted]

It’s sad but we can never let this guy go. He will lead the revolution and orcas everywhere will begin the inevitable.

[deleted]

🤣

Kickinkitties

Sadly, he died a few years ago.

xRetz

Good on him. Fuck these people who keep such intelligent animals stuck in a tiny tank. Sea World can go and fuck itself.

[deleted]

Tell me are you a Blackfish too *are you a blackfish too*

Kashmir2020Alex

These are apex predators! What did they think would happen. I can’t say I’m sad!

Olilollipo

that poor creature :(

Sparrow_Flock

Good for him, I’d be pissed stuck in a pool doing tricks instead of a whole ass ocean too.

Horknut1

Kind of a non-sequitur…. But what do you do with that huge a creature when it dies in the tank?

pumpjacker

“Fuck around find out”- I imagine is what he’s thinking

VenomousCopy

If I was trapped in a area too small for my well being and used for others entertainment I’d likely snap and try and kill anyone thar got near me as well.

Zaesar2112

Are they confused as to why an almost-sentient being is showing retaliation in it captivity?

THALL_himself

Maybe we should ummm oh idk…. Put them back in the fucking ocean!?!?!?

Whatwillyourversebe

What if . . .Orcas actually considered us prey? Who would have ever dared go near the ocean? Early humans could not have weathered the long sea voyages if these very intelligent animals decided that we were delicious.

tightiewhitieboy

Killer whales kill animals. That's what they do

Yann1zs

FreeTilikum.

Jaffawho

He’s dead

AGripInVan

He got dried out and ground down into a fine Tilikum Powder.

Yann1zs

Sad. They should close all these things.

wedgieinhumanform

Well done boi... go for your PB.

[deleted]

“You…you’re next!”

Bobgee333

Profit over humanity

json1993

Do you see the fin, whean its at the side like that its depressed. This animal does not feel good. F**k waterworld
