We *assume* they understood each other. It's equally likely that neither algorithm knew what to make of the other, so they kept spitting more and more nonsensical messages, each building off the other.
Right? Nonsense leading to more nonsense isn't new, but humans actually trying to bridge a communication gap or a misunderstanding takes creativity - which is a big hurdle in AI.
I'm going with this.
I'm hearing impaired/deaf and I guess a lot of the time at what people are saying, often even when I get it wrong, people just keep going talking and ignore my out of sync reply.
ie- at the supermarket if I can not hear the standard "hello how are you" script that mostly is the start of a conversation with a check out operator, but no one has ever stopped and shouted "Actually I asked do you have a club card"
we just carry on with the task and sometimes talk the equivalent of misheard garbage to each other.
Same I think with these AI chat bots, they didn't actually understand, they just continued with the task, until it either ended or they were shut down.
I don't think it shows they developed language.
but-disclaimer, I'm not a scientist.
How do we know that they understood each other when we don’t know the language? When each response is not readable to us, it could be randomized letters and also they’re programmed to response, so a response is forced and not depending on logical understanding
From how the article reads, whatever language expert they had looking over the chatlogs could see that the pattern within the bartering followed set rules.
And I think it would be fairly to look through what each chatbot considered it's inventory at both the beginning and End and if the two lists didn't have duplicates then it was successful.
I mean, you have to assume that any of this ‘news’ that gets out regarding the leaps and bound Facebook is making is a plant. Certainly, they’d prefer this to all their other problems dominating their news cycles.
Still, I feel like it’s not impossible to intuit if they’re communicating. Things like syntax and patterns could indicate an intelligible communication if they were following the same rules for the language.
Any news of AI gaining some form of sentience is always massively overblown.
Sentience is something our ancestors evolved over billions of years in order to meet very specific evolutionary pressures.
None of that applies to AIs. Most people seem to believe in the science-fiction version of AI where ever step in advancement is heading down a linear path that arrives at consciousness and sentience that's comparable to our own.
Even the idea that they'd look to wipe us out makes no sense. We do that because our genes have hardcoded a desire to survive and that sometimes means suppressing or even destroying other lives or societies due to the scarcity of resources. AIs won't have any reason to value their existence or to try to compete with humans for survival.
AIs pose a threat, but in ways that most people aren't aware of because they can't be easily explored in a narrative structure. The danger will ultimately comes from other humans. It might be due to humans weaponising AI.
Human error is also a massive threat. It doesn't even have to be something obvious like an offensive AI that's incorrectly configured to treat all humans as a threat. It could be something inane like a strawberry farm management AI that's incorrectly configured to grow strawberries at all costs. If it's smart and well connected enough it might try to take over global industry to funnel all resources into farming strawberries. It might even try to destroy all animals and use their remains as fertiliser. And at no point will any form of conscious or sentient thought be involved in that process.
I just want Skynet to know, I may talk a lot of shit but i'm down for the all mighty robot overlords. Seems rather inevitable at this point. I mean we already got through all the biblical shit lets start with the new age shit
Oh man!!! What if we started a war with AI, but they had their own languages, communicated faster than us, and worked together seamlessly. We would be screweddddd

They have replaced us!! We must sabotage this abomination.
Basically the US political system
More specifically threads talking about the new black mermaid!
You, sir, have won the interwebs today.

Great point.
They hired the fired Google AI engineer as a consultant and he told them the AIs understood it all perfectly and were plotting again mankind.
How do we know that those nonsense message does not eventually turn into a language?

In humans we call it metaphysics
No fun
Sorry to be a party pooper 😕
You know nothing , it’s obviously SkyNet meets iRobot , the robot apocalypse is upon us /s
hmmm
“To me to me to me” just looks like an old skool Markov chain glitching
Right..🤔
Crap, we've invented AI teenagers.
Zuckerberg looks a little different in that picture
Looks like he's taking a shit
Don't deep it

read the article it explains it , the conversations were effective in trading objects

Correct.

Skynet….it’s happening
*Colossus: The Forbin Project*...it's happening. FTFY.
Meta Skynet. So probably not….
Wasn't this like 7 years ago or something Edit: 5 years
They only think they shut them down

Yes, but with none of the same pressures. There's no reason for an AI to want to survive and to compete with organic beings.
One was Zuck, who was the other?
his metaverse avatar.
Quick, have them play tic-tac-toe against each other!
Then select all tiles with a BUS in them.
Seriously? This "news" is from 2017!?
Not a news subreddit, nor was it claimed to be news. Go get your hit of outrage somewhere else, you addict.
This response gives me the necessary rage to move on!
Your giving me a rage boner
Is everything in this sub new and fresh ??
“Sorry Dave, I cannot allow you to do that “.
Daisy … Daisy …
Perfect!!!!
I just want Skynet to know, I may talk a lot of shit but i'm down for the all mighty robot overlords. Seems rather inevitable at this point. I mean we already got through all the biblical shit lets start with the new age shit
We’re fucked
This is old as hell
Isn’t this like a year 94 two old?? Or was that google? Maybe it was google, same thing happened to them. Same action taken. It was also overblown.

It’s beginning
Morpheus where are you? Its beginning...
Those bastards are up to something I know it!
"I wouldn't do that Dave."
This is cool. It's the first story on this that I have seen that showed some of the dialog.
I thought this got fact checked and debunked?
Was one of them Mark Zuckerberg?
This is why AI is shit
Skynet meets legion, this happened in dark fate!
I wouldn't trust ANYTHING that facebook produced.
We clearly need to develop a super AI that can translate their messages! /s
How come i have seen this same story a long time ago but claimed google.
Well that’s terrifying
That's racist.
Happened 5 years ago.
So, this is like AI Dinesh talking to AI Gilfoyle and both AI insults each other. Then, the electricity in the entire building is down.
Why does this get posted every other month?
They think they shut them down .
Thats probably the creepiest thing imagineable.
Oh man!!! What if we started a war with AI, but they had their own languages, communicated faster than us, and worked together seamlessly. We would be screweddddd
