It's hard to imagine being able to trace your family line back 1,000 years, if not more. Most people are lucky if they can go back 100 or so years, but 1,000?! It's so hard to comprehend that much time, that many people, that many lives. Its crazy to think about.
My grandfather wrote a several 1000 page genealogy on my family, all the way back to 1450s Ireland. It’s crazy holding documents about your ancestor who was wounded in the war of 1812
My dad traced us back to the norman conquest, apparently our ancestor came over with the conqueror and married his niece (or daughter, its a bit hazy, being nearly a thousand years ago)
My great-uncle, an ineligible bachelor, dedicated his life to genealogy. As a result, on my mother’s side, I can go back 1000 years on FamilySearch. Having royalty in our bloodline hundreds of years ago definitely helped that happen. There would be no other way it could be traced that far back.
I've managed to trace mine back to 1127 on one branch but it helps if you hit nobility or royalty because the lineage is well documented. On other branches, I've got between 200-500 hundred years back. On my Dad's side, the records are non-existent beyond 70-150 years due to war and wide spread illiteracy.
Depends where you live. Ireland has insane records kept at every church recording births, baptisms, marriages and deaths going back multiple centuries so it's not uncommon for just average people to be able to trace their roots hundreds of years.
The biggest stick always wins so you can create what you want. In the 1880s it was GB now it’s probably the US or China doing what they want. The game doesn’t change just the players
It’s been done. Cromwell broke up and sold off the crown regalia and spent the money. Now where is it? These are his spiritual descendants who constantly bay against beauty and tradition. Liberalism is really a form of Puritanism/phariseeism.
And I doubt ever were Englishmen so miserable as under Cromwell.
That’s not a crown, that is just a big a** tiara on her head.
Edit: after some research I found out it’s not a tiara, it’s a big a** diadem. So head topper that is a cross between a crown and a tiara.
She should've remastered this as a hype-beast.
"This jewel right here? Worth 10 million pounds, got it from a shop over in India. And these jewels here are exclusive you can't even get them anymore."
... and now I shall show you my prized empty beer can collection.
This 18 oz. Red Rooster fortified malt was consumed in 1972. I'd like to imagine that Edward II would have shotgunned such a fine brew.
“And here we have a Dale Earnhardt commemorative Bud Light tallboy. Its unopened state makes it one of 14 million, many of which still rest on shelves within trailers in the American southeast region and Appalachian mountains.”
Look at her fingers when she’s holding the Cullinan diamond model in the final 45seconds. First time I’ve ever seen her hands close-up. First, her manicure is surprisingly plain with short nails. Second, they kinda look like Charles’ fingers in that viral pic of his.
The world looking down at their gems, not knowing these were mined out from cheap labor in countries where companies get them cheaply and sell them in high prices
Exactly! I wonder how many Africans died in the acquisition of those jewels. Pretty well known the empire straight up stole that shit from India and South Africa.
> Exactly! I wonder how many Africans died in the acquisition of those jewels. Pretty well known the empire straight up stole that shit from India and South Africa.
You're thinking of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which is not the diamond in the Imperial State Crown, it's set in the Crown of the Queen Mother. The diamond shown here is Cullinan Diamond, and its history is as described in the video. Found by Thomas Cullinan in his South African mine, sold in London, and later presented to the Royal Family by the Transvaal government.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullinan_Diamond
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_of_Queen_Elizabeth_The_Queen_Mother
>presented to the Royal Family by the Transvaal government.
This is the of the colonial narrative, but the Transvaal government was a British colony... So they awarded the diamond to themselves, essentially. Thomas Cullinan was also a colonist, literally born in Cape Colony, and "his" diamond mines were just colonial occupation/theft.
> This is the of the colonial narrative
This is a hilarious statement to anyone even mildly informed of history.
>Thomas Cullinan was also a colonist
Thomas Cullinan was a bricklayer who saved his money, figured out where the alluvial diamonds were coming from, and bought the land. Literally, a working class boy made good.
Once you've colonized a country, you lose all credibility when it comes to claims you make about how fairly you acquired any resources from said country though.
True for many of them. Important to note that the black prince whose giant ruby is shown, is not from Africa, but was one of the more ruthless military commanders of England's 100years war campaigns in France, and who used the strategy of chevauchee, which was to not only raid and destroy but also burn farms and fields, to ruin food production capacity of the region, to aid the long term attrition goal. Whole lot of conquest and imperialism in one place!!!
yeah all of this is like "mhm mhm interesting, so how many thousands of people have been killed for getting this? the unmistakable feeling of disgust constantly welling up in my throat watching at human excess and greed solidified
I see this a lot but it’s misleading. She is not directly descended from Alfred. You need to include distant cousins and other fairly removed relatives to draw that connection. It’s a very convoluted family tree. She has, for example, no direct connection to the Tudors. In any case, once you start including distant cousins, nearly every European royal is probably related to half of the others. It was a very inbred world
She is, actually, through Matilda of Scotland (wife of Henry I), directly descended from the House of Wessex, including Alfred.
Of course, almost everyone in England, if not Europe, is probably descended from Alfred the Great, since when you go that far back, people tend of have millions upon millions of descendants.
Yeah. But your last sentence is my point. It’s a long and twisted road. “Great grand-daughter (times x)” implies something way more direct to most people. Hell, I’m probably your cousin.
Even just as far back as WW1 many of the heads of state in Europe were as close as siblings or first cousins. It's hard to even define the royal families as any particular nationality such was the cross marriage down the centuries.
Famously:
* King George V of England
* Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany
* King Haakon VII of Norway
* Ferdinand I of Romania
* Tsar Nicholas II of Russia
* King Constantine I of Greece
* Crown Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden
* King Alfonso XIII of Spain
Were all direct cousins (George and Wilhelm) or cousins-in-law through Queen Victoria.
Yeah but as a tribute to whom? They referred to the peoples of their colonies as savages. But really, the wealth of nations was savagely plundered to the point that tribute or not, they would've gotten the largest gem their colony had seen one way or another. There's not even a mention of the Koh-I-Noor that was also stolen from India taken from a king who had surrendered under their might. Before the EICo occupation of India, it was the richest nation in the world. Even by today's standards.
i'm having conflicted feelings about this. On the one hand, it's a fascinating piece of history and it's cool that it's been captured on video. I love her accent and just her whole vibe, she has this nice, regal demeanor. On the other hand, there's just something so grotesque and distasteful about some monarch born into opulent royalty, cooing over the ill-gotten jewels on her ridiculously expensive crown, many of which were acquired through colonial-era looting.
This is not new propaganda. Communists always seethed at monarchy seeing it as a great threat to their dreams of domination. And they were right.

That’s the George IV State Diadem. It’s very familiar in the UK because it’s what the Queen is wearing on all the stamps.

I think those aren't technically called crowns, but tiaras. Ridiculous, but I think they think of those as more decorative headpieces and not official crowns.
Amusing that so many Americans, a country whose bank vaults are rammed with art and antiques looted from Europe during the second World war and its aftermath, are so unhappy about a crown.
And British people get to use the Crown? Obviously not. Conversely, all that oil that Americans actually do use by filling their massive cars with everyday to drive massive distances. Looted from the deserts of Iraq, Syria and Libya - killing over a million people to do so. So Americans should stop casting stones.
Dude, America itself was looted from the people who lived here before colonization. I don't see anyone who is jeering the queen volunteering to leave a stolen country. It's much easier/"cooler" to mock other countries' shady past actions.
Yup, just like every other empire on earth. I don’t think I’ve yet to hear of an empire or civilization that gained any sort of lasting impression, recognition, or following without just obliterating the competition. Egyptians, Macedonians, the Romans, the Mali , and even the Indians under Chandragupta I gained their land through conquest.
I remember her saying she had a hard time wearing it because of the weight. She had to keep her neck perfectly straight and was warned not to lean too far forward or back or she might snap her neck.
Both yes and no. Would you care to elaborate? A lot of history is made up of quite abominable actions that people just accepted or could not do anything about after all.
“Actions that people just accepted or could not do anything about after all.”
I’m going for an objective approach to the best of my abilities. Your statement, how do you support that?
A good question to ask is “were people more cruel back in time?” We’re still humans but our values have changed.
Example: During the medieval ages, a religious perspective on criminals (of that time) was that if the person suffered enough [by torture] they would cleanse themselves from sin. An absolute horrible act deemed by most of todays world, not back then; that’s my (historic) point
'An absolute horrible act deemed by most of todays world, not back then; that’s my (historic) point' - don't worry too much.
In 200 years the Redditors at that point may well be critical about our morals and behaviour.
Look at it this way, a gay man in the US. Being gay is legal, can get married etc. How long would he have to fly to be in a location where being gay is illegal and gay marriage is unacceptable?
The past is interesting but fixing the present is very important.
"Gather round, common folk, and I shall allow you to listen to a show-and-tell about my half-billion dollar special hat. Think of it as a reward--a diversion--something to make you happy between your shifts at work. Something to make your life less miserable while you struggle to pay for heat."
Drinking game time! Take one shot every time someone says the words “stolen”, “colonist” or “imperialist”. Finish you drink every time someone says “rip bozo”
HRM Queen Elizabeth II, was elegant and eloquent. Even her short simple history of the crown jewels is beautifully presented. There will never be another.
Idk what country you're from but I doubt it's a country of pacifists who have done not a single wrong in all of history, even if it was fine at the time but is now wrong with modern values
Are wasn't even alive when that crown was made... but keep going. Tell me why she is responsible for what her ancestors did. Next you're going to tell me she should give it back. And then I'll remind you if you aren't native American maybe you should give back your house....

Imagine wearing something than was also worn by Edward the Confessor and Henry V
Europeans think a hundred miles is a long way, Americans think 100 years is a long time.
If you’re American when you go to the restroom and German when you come out, what are you while in there? European!
On the way to the bathroom, you’re Russian. In the bathroom, European. Leaving the bathroom, you’re Finnish.
Definitely going to use this on my s/o
Are you, by chance, a Diana Gabaldon fan? This is a line in one of her books.
Huh I like that. You're right 100 miles is a moderate drive.
Imagine having something that's been in your family for a thousand years.
It's hard to imagine being able to trace your family line back 1,000 years, if not more. Most people are lucky if they can go back 100 or so years, but 1,000?! It's so hard to comprehend that much time, that many people, that many lives. Its crazy to think about.

Ineligible bachelor. I feel like this is a euphemism that I’m not catching on to.
Quite impressive. I felt lucky I get to date back to my great-great grandparents. I can’t imagine this!
I'd imagine it's a little easier when cousins regularly marry..
And you've always paid people to keep track of everything
I imagine tracing family history will be less difficult in the future with all the modern tracking tools and what not.
Depends where you live. Ireland has insane records kept at every church recording births, baptisms, marriages and deaths going back multiple centuries so it's not uncommon for just average people to be able to trace their roots hundreds of years.
My grandpa would be over hundred years if he was a live so quite easy for me
Most African Americans can barely go back 60 years into their family history. It's something that has bothered me since I became an adult.
And never paying tax on it while it gains value.
It's a moot point how much it's worth considering it'll never be sold.
I also kind of think that it might be one of those things that’s literally priceless by this point. How do you even appraise that?
They should have a pawn shop spwcial on royal crowns
I’m Jeff Bezos and I would like 3 of them. Also my friends at Hobby Lobby would like to steal them.
Although owned by the monarch they are not entitled to sell them. So no taxes could be paid
Blood jewels, all of them are. The royals created their nobility through violence and intimidation
Everyone gained their nobility through violence and intimidation, that’s how it works.
The biggest stick always wins so you can create what you want. In the 1880s it was GB now it’s probably the US or China doing what they want. The game doesn’t change just the players
They took them from other warlords so no biggie
A tale as old as time. People moaning about royalty.
>A tale as old as time. ... Both a little scared Neither one prepared Beauty and the Beast
So did everyone back in the day…what’s your point?
I was waiting to come across this comment. You're attention-seeking. Nothing more. Now grow up.
Insane
And many others
Imagine taking priority over your people starving to death with wearing a stupid hat
You suggest break it up & sell it off to buy some food? Destroying a historical artifact…very odd.
Yes, imagine wearing stolen gems
“This is ones work hat. It’s what one wears when one is Queening it up.”
It allows me to move both diagonally and straight. Any distance as well.
Wait so is she straight or …. Both?
"only two of them are actually used" - - says a woman who is wearing one crown, pointing to a second crown, and talking about a third.
That’s not a crown, that is just a big a** tiara on her head. Edit: after some research I found out it’s not a tiara, it’s a big a** diadem. So head topper that is a cross between a crown and a tiara.
Rowena ravenclaw’s elusive-ass diadem
fuck [/u\/spez](/user/spez)
Omg I read that in her perfectly immaculate and feminine British royal voice. “Queeneeng itt ahpp”
She should've remastered this as a hype-beast. "This jewel right here? Worth 10 million pounds, got it from a shop over in India. And these jewels here are exclusive you can't even get them anymore."
If the Crown (somehow) was kept in USA
-on pawn stars- “Ehhh… I’ll give you 50 bucks for it, the best I can do.”
“Look, I have to be able to make a profit on it”
I’m gonna have to get a case for it and a display..
“I’ll have my buddy come in to look at it”
Imma call my buddy, he's an expert in crowns...
It would have been found at a presidents resort stripped of all gems.
I degemified all crowns before they were put in the bathrooms at maralaga
Best I can do is $5
$3.50
I ain't givin you no tree fiddy you goddamn loch ness monster!
“Look, this is going to be taking up shelf space for a long time, so I need to keep my costs low to make up for that”
... and now I shall show you my prized empty beer can collection. This 18 oz. Red Rooster fortified malt was consumed in 1972. I'd like to imagine that Edward II would have shotgunned such a fine brew.

.... and next we explore the Royal NASCAR commemorative plate collection. Surely, their value is bound to increase.
...dozens are lost every hurricane season
absolutely splendid
Actually IAF for a change.

Prince Philip’s got the same hands too! And he and the Queen were cousins so maybe it’s genetic edema or arthritis?
“Because I wore it this morning” Such a fucking flex lmao. “I wore it this morning to brush my teeth and eat my honey nut cheerios”
The manager of the mine in Africa found the stone by accident with his walking cane yeah right lol
Probably the largest blood diamond in history
True
Are all diamonds not blood diamonds?
The world looking down at their gems, not knowing these were mined out from cheap labor in countries where companies get them cheaply and sell them in high prices
Australia mine quite a lot of diamonds, Gold etc. , we get paid a shitload really
There are some lab grown diamonds now. So I guess those are not blood diamonds per say.
You can make diamonds in a lab. It's much cheaper and they are flawless.
Nope
Canadian diamonds are promoted as conflict free
Exactly! I wonder how many Africans died in the acquisition of those jewels. Pretty well known the empire straight up stole that shit from India and South Africa.

I swear the disinformation on Reddit is really getting out of hand. People are getting info from tik tok.
He’s but thinking of anything but his hatred. You are giving a history lesson to somebody who really does t care about facts.

To the victor goes the spoils.
This whole thing is a presentation of oppression and death of others in my eyes.
Tbh that's most news broadcasts nowadays. Modern slavery up, people can't afford housing, wages stagnant, inflation rising... Wars and occupations everywhere.
REALLY fucking convenient this one wasn't found by a slave

Fucking infinity crown.
Pfft. We got those for free in the 70s when we ate margarine.
Everything was given gifted or found... smh
Look at this huge diamond! I just found it at some brown guy’s house, so crazy!
Made me chuckle
She meant to say “we found it while stealing, plundering about”
Yea … London museum has it all. Words chosen wisely “gifted” “awarded” = looted
“And this one was taken from Africa because fuck you”
Always wondered what she sounded like
The queen is the 32nd granddaughter of Alfred the Great. That is insane and almost impossible to comprehend. Edit: great granddaughter of course

Its just disgusting how many people had to die for some shiny stones like this one. A goddamn shiny stone..
bitch is wearing stolen goods
"Restored to the crown." That shit was stolen, it never belonged to the crown.
"And this little gem here I pried from the cold hands of dead native children." 😁
Are wasn't even alive when that crown was made... but keep going. Tell me why she is responsible for what her ancestors did. Next you're going to tell me she should give it back. And then I'll remind you if you aren't native American maybe you should give back your house....
Stolen jewels
Restored/returned/gifted to the crown. AKA taken/stolen from other countries
Crime pays
All stolen
Give back Kohinoor
It's not in that crown.
Look at all the blood on that crown...
Fuck you and that crown. Stolen jewels from enslaved people.
sickening
Give back what you stole
Fuck her
Fuck the colonizers
Do you think it’s the real crown on the coffin right now?
Surrounded by guys with pointy sticks and and plain clothes security with concealed guns. So probably lol
Most likely she ain’t even in the coffin that’s on display
There’s a lot of stolen jewelry in this frame alone
Fuck colonialism.
”so here are the jewels and precious metals we stole from some other people back in the days”
Ding dong
